This homily, on Fasting, Prayer, and Almsgiving for souls, was given abroad. Abroad—that is, outside the Holy Mountain. For the fathers usually put their affairs in order and return to the Holy Mountain

for this great season of fasting, so that they may commune more deeply with God, struggle more fervently, and taste His grace more fully, especially at Pascha.

For no one will find what he seeks without labor. And if a farmer does not cultivate his field, he should not expect any fruit. As she does every year when we pass through Great Lent,

our Church, like a mother caring for her children, the Christians, has set this season of Great Lent It has been appointed as a special season of spiritual struggle, set apart from the rest of the year, so that the Church may help her children to become purer and draw closer to God. Throughout the year, we commit sins. Then Great Lent comes like a

washing machine and washes us. It cleanses us and makes us worthy to celebrate the great and radiant day of the Resurrection. The demons fear fasting, because fasting brings about their downfall. “This kind goes out only through fasting and prayer, ” said the Lord—that is, the demonic kind.

Fasting is exceedingly powerful; it has great strength. as a very intense one, because the Fathers say that into a stomach that is full the Holy Spirit will not enter. That is, the Holy Spirit does not overshadow a person when he is stuffed with food. This is why the Fathers always began every work according to God with fasting. And every Christian who wants to live in a Christian way,

to live purification, must begin from the foundation, which is fasting, prayer, and nepsis, watchfulness. When fasting, prayer, and nepsis are joined together, a person comes to a great spiritual measure.

In earlier times, the Fathers had a holy custom: on the eve of Great Lent, they would leave their monasteries and journey into the deeper desert, They would go into the desert, taking a few simple foods with them—though some, of course, took nothing at all, since they would find wild plants there—and they would remain there throughout Great Lent.

Once they had reached a deserted place, they would devote themselves to a more intense ascetic struggle. Then they would return on the Saturday of Saint Lazarus, and they would all celebrate Palm Sunday together. and then, during Holy Week, they would spend all the days inside the church, sustaining themselves on a little piece of dry bread and a couple of nuts.

We had the blessing and the grace to know ascetic men who lived not only through the season of Great Lent but throughout the whole year in fasting and in ascesis, ascetic discipline.

My Elder of blessed memory, whom you know as Elder Joseph the Cave-dweller, the Hesychast, lived inside the caves. It was there that I too met him.

During Great Lent he kept the fast very, very strictly. And of course he imposed it on us as well. Consider that for the five days, from Monday to Friday, there was no food at all. Only about seventy-five grams of flour, which we made into a batter with plain water, and that was a little plateful for the whole twenty-four hours, together with a multitude of prostrations, with labor, and with all-night vigil through the entire night. With hundreds of prostrations and prayers,

hours of work during the day, and loads carried on our backs. All of this had one purpose only: that a person be purified, that he become cleaner, purer, more honorable in the eyes of God. And these men who offered these prayers and gained boldness before God, parrhesia, prayed for the whole world. The world has need of the prayers of the saints, and especially of the ascetics, for St.

Anthony the Great, by his prayers, upheld the whole world. ... the world. I bear a heavy responsibility, because my own prayers do not have that worth to be able to help the world. And I am sorry for this, because they ought to have had such power. But all Christians who pray must not forget that there are other people as well who have need of these prayers.

It is not only in this world that there are people in need; there is also the other world, the spiritual world. We have said before, in another homily, that almsgiving does not consist in material things alone, but even more in spiritual things. Have you ever thought of praying for people, for the souls that are held in God's prison? Have you ever considered that there are souls who have not yet passed into the Kingdom of God?

Do you realize how terribly they suffer, these souls? Who will pray for them?

Here is the great act of mercy: to pray for those who are held in custody and await the day of judgment. They tremble at the thought that the hour has come—the great hour of their judgment—when they will be judged once and for all, for eternity, and that their state in hell will have no end. These people are souls, just like us.

If we ourselves were in that state, what a blessing it would be to have someone, to have people with the power in their prayers to deliver us from that Hell. Think of the galleys: you may have seen films about the men of old who labored in the galleys, bound with chains on their feet and hands, forced to work in the mines, on the roads, in the mud, carrying stones,

a wretched existence down in the water, sleeping in the mud for the rest of their lives. And what is that condition compared to the condition of the people undergoing punishment? Measured against eternity, let this matter occupy us seriously. Picture yourself in that position. Your debt would be paid in full, and you would be delivered from this state of captivity,

bondage, and condemnation, and afterward enter into eternal rest. In other words, you would be taken from dreadful Hell and brought instead into the glory and rest of God. What a tremendous change, a complete reversal of conditions. And yet the prayers of holy people have accomplished this great miracle. This almsgiving is the highest almsgiving a Christian can offer. But to arrive at this point,

for a person's soul to be moved to pray in this way, a spiritual state must come first. How will a person reach this spiritual state, so that he may pray and his prayers bring this great benefit to those condemned, cut off from eternal life? He must take up ascesis, pray, fast, kneel, give alms, study, pray again, receive Holy Communion, make Holy Confession, and let his whole life be a life of prayer; and so,

his prayers gaining boldness before God, he will accomplish this great work for the souls of the imprisoned, the captives, those wretched people and souls for whom Christ died. Christ died on the Cross for every soul, and Christ seeks a cause to have mercy on these people. Divine Justice searches to find a reason to justify a person's release from condemnation.

And we human beings, darkened by sin and ignorance, do not give the love of Christ the occasion to have mercy on these souls. Have you not seen these people, these souls? Have you not seen how they suffer? If you saw them, your love would be stirred, and your conscience would urge you to act. It would move you to help them. Help them, then, with the impulse you are given. When you pray for yourselves and for your own,

remember also these wretched people who have nowhere to lay their head. [Incomplete word]. The season of fasting, of course, is most necessary, but it also requires discretion. Ascetic discipline, including fasting, cannot be imposed equally on everyone, because people differ in health, in their obligations, and in many other ways. One’s spiritual father determines what is appropriate,

and moderation in all things is best. When we go beyond the proper measure, we will cause harm. Someone who suffers from diabetes cannot fast. How, then, can a person with this illness be expected to fast? In sickness, or in any other condition that does not allow fasting, how will such a person be purified, how will he see the light of God? He will see it through patient endurance and thanksgiving to God. Thanksgiving and patient endurance make up for the fasting that, because of illness, he cannot keep. As I said earlier,

more than in any other virtue, God rests fully in the almsgiving of a person's soul. Show mercy and you will find mercy; the judgment is merciless to the one who has shown no mercy. What does this mean? When a person is judged at the tribunal of God... For the person who showed no mercy in his lifetime,

God’s judgment will be merciless—that is, without leniency and without mercy from God. Saint Andrew, the Fool for Christ, took on the way of holy foolishness so that he might suffer in this life and uproot every trace of pride from his soul. He was a great saint. And people took him for a madman, for a fool, and they cursed him, mocked him,

jeered at him, and did a thousand and one things to him in the streets. On one such occasion, a virtuous woman named Barbara happened to pass by, and she noticed the people, the children, the ruffians who were mocking him; and as she looked at Saint Andrew, God opened her eyes, her spiritual eyes, and she saw that he was a holy man and not a madman,

as people supposed him to be. She also saw the demons saying to one another: 'We are doing well with this deceiver of the people, this one who mocks the world, who fools people into thinking he is mad. And when these people who mock and jeer at him die, we will condemn them, because they mocked a saint of God.' Saint Andrew, while Barbara heard all these things the demons were saying,

answered the demons and said to them: 'Do not rejoice, do not celebrate, for I have besought God not to count as sin the things these people do to me; and therefore you are deceived to think that you will condemn them on the day of judgment for what they do to me.' So this was a great act of almsgiving by the Saint toward these people who had done him this evil. They did him harm, and it turned into good for them. A different kind of almsgiving, this.

It was to show both to the Saint and to that virtuous woman how well-pleasing Saint Andrew was, and to show how pleasing to God this kind of almsgiving is: that is, the forgiveness that Saint Andrew extended to the very people mocking him. And behold, heaven opens and a dove comes down, a dove with an olive branch in its beak, and it comes toward Saint Andrew and

speaks to him with a human voice and says: "Take, Andrew, this sprig of the olive, this olive branch, which the Father of Lights sends you; and just as He is compassionate and merciful toward men, so are you also merciful and full of mercy." Think of this great assurance from God. Behold God’s favor. Behold the beauty of his boldness and confidence in prayer. He prayed for his enemies. He did not harbor resentment as we do;

he did not become bitter as we do when people accuse us, insult us, or slander us. Let us not become bitter—and I speak first of all to myself. We become bitter because we are proud, because we are not free from the passions, because we have no love, and because our souls lack mercy. That is why we become bitter and fill ourselves with so many thoughts against those who accuse us. We cannot put up with anything; we cannot tolerate even the slightest offense. Why?

Because we are so full of pride.

So then, through prayer, through fasting, the heart of man is humbled. "Behold my humility and my toil, and forgive all my sins," says the psalmist. Toil, fasting, prayer, watchfulness, almsgiving change a person and transform him; they make the heart different, they make it compassionate toward one's neighbor.

and the pain of the other becomes his own pain.

Saint Silouan the Athonite, the new Saint of the Holy Mountain, says: you must bring your nous down into Hell, he says, for if you bring it down there, God will lift you up out of Hell.

This is the greatest compassion we can show, the one that gives rest to God, that refreshes Him, for God Himself is exactly this. We are but a single drop, or rather a mere microbe of compassion, while God dwells within the infinity of compassion. But He rests in the intention, in the fact that it resembles His own, God's own. God cares for these people whom He holds in His prison. His justice compels Him to place them there in His prison. Then compassion comes from the other side and says to man:

pray for these people. Why? So that God may find, through the prayer, a rightful cause for compassion to conquer justice, and to send His mercy to the people who suffer down there. These people are forgotten. People die, and die, and no one gives them a thought. We care for the people close to us—our own family,

our parents, our relatives, and our friends. We offer memorial services and prayers for them, and we pray the Jesus Prayer on the prayer rope for the repose of their souls. For these others we never knelt, we never lifted up our hands, we never shed a single tear. Even a single tear for those forgotten people down there. Many have brought souls out of Hell. In our Patristic Tradition and ascetic writings, we have read of many hidden saints who did this; and how many prayers, never recorded, have saved souls.

And God glorified those saints for this great act of mercy. If even a cup of water given in the name... "In the name of a disciple, in the name of a prophet, in the name of a righteous one": it has worth and it has recompense from God. The widow cast one two-lepton coin into the treasury of the Church, and she was praised by Christ, and it is written in the Holy Gospel. This was a small almsgiving, yet great in its intention. Just think of it: two lepta of a single coin compared with one prayer offered for thousands,

for millions of wretched people condemned to the galleys of Hell. Let us try to become more spiritual people, to draw nearer, to come close to God so that we may speak to Him. The more we draw near Him, the closer we come to the very ear of God. Let us speak to Him about these people who suffer. If we go into the hospitals, we will see a great deal there.

We will see one on oxygen, another just out of surgery. You go, you walk down the hospital corridor, and you hear one moaning in his room from some pain, and another giving up his soul, unable to die. The heart of man is not broken. And even though you know that what this person suffers is only temporary, still, if you have compassion within you, you too will suffer along with him.

There, where his cry is not heard at all, and in Hades there is no repentance. Repentance. For those who have departed this life, their repentance is not heard. Who, then, will save them? The Church Triumphant. And who is the Church? The Church Militant. Who is that? We are.

If we forget them... God greatly loves the merciful person. Why does He love him? Because He too is merciful. Like is drawn to like, as the saying goes. Now, as we begin the fast... Now that we will intensify our prayers a little, let us remember especially these people too, these souls that are down there in the prison. They are in great misery; if you were to see them,

you would grieve for them very deeply, but I tell you that this is how it is, and now, in this season, let us struggle all the more. And the benefits will be very great. A person’s sins are forgiven; and when fasting goes hand in hand with prayer, spiritual reading, watchfulness, self-sacrifice, confession, Holy Communion, good works, and almsgiving—when it is

strengthened and surrounded by all these—then the beauty of the soul’s preparation to receive Holy Week is made complete. Then the soul will experience the Holy Passion. Throughout this whole period, the heart will melt, the soul will become tender, and it will experience Christ’s suffering more deeply. It will come to know how infinite God’s love for mankind is.

It will also see that Christ, though He was God on earth, did not pass through this life in triumph, but in martyrdom. Christ did not take His rest the way we take ours. Christ did not have the soft comforts that we dress ourselves in and sleep in. And He was God, sinless, with every right to pass over the earth dry-shod, untouched by hardship. Yet that is not what happened.

What happened? He lived His life as a martyr, those thirty-three years upon the earth, to help us who are slothful and negligent, so that we would not sink into sloth, but would struggle too. If our guide, if our teacher suffered, will we His students choose a different road? Have you ever come to a real sense in your soul of the passion of Christ?

Have you grasped the pains He suffered? Can you conceive, through theoria, through contemplation, that a man, a servant, raised his hand and struck God with a blow? Did Christ grow angry, did He rage, did He strike back? No.

Have you seen how a man rages against us, especially in the old days? This the Lord endured for us. God upon the earth is scourged, slapped, mocked, insulted, and jeered at. The soldiers treated Him the way they sometimes take some vagrant off the street, some disreputable man, and scourge him and mock him and ridicule him and jeer at him. In that position they placed God.

Let us go there to His tribunal and be judged. Let Him show us His immaculate head, with the holes left by the crown of thorns, His side pierced by the lance, His holy hands and feet pierced by the blacksmith's terrible nails, His back, everything scourged by the whip, with the marks still upon Him. All of this for whom? For us.

We offered Him nothing. What did we do to Christ? How did we answer all of this? With a heap of sins. Behold what our repayment was. In return for the manna, gall. He gave us the manna, His whole self, and we gave Him to drink the gall of our sins. This is the gratitude we show toward His divine Crucifixion.

When the Christian realizes all of this, this whole great truth, and of course we could develop this theme of Christ's offering to us and our ingratitude and thanklessness, we will see a chasm between ourselves and Christ. But we simply have His forgiveness, because we are dust and clay,

because we are weak human beings, and without the power of God we can do nothing. The Apostle Peter, too, vowed that even if everyone denies You, I will never do this to You. He boasted; he thought that by human strength and by the zeal that marked him he could prove himself a brave man. But he saw that he was not even an autumn leaf. He denied Christ, not before a tyrant, but before a servant girl.

Before a little girl he denied Him: I do not know the man. Peter, did you not see the man? Are you not the one who boasted that you are the great Peter, who would never deny Him? And now you have the nerve to say that you do not know the man standing beside you, while they mock Him and jeer at Him and scourge Him and slap Him? You did not see this man? And the cock crowed, it says,

and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, and he went out and wept bitterly. He repented.

You see how changeable a human being is: today he seems strong, and tomorrow he is utterly powerless. And so we believe that we are powerless and yet strong at the same time. It is when the power of Christ overshadows us that we become exceedingly strong, as we see in the martyrdoms of the Saints. Now we might think we cannot endure a needle, a pin, a tiny splinter. If it gets into our hand, at once we seek relief, to pull it out, because we harbor a fear that we cannot bear it with patient endurance.

Now we run to the doctor to have it removed. And yet, when the grace of Christ comes, we see it in the Saints, we see it in holy young women. Young children enduring terrible martyrdoms. Let us hope that, in the years to come, we too will be able to face such martyrdom. The prophecies indicate that we will face this situation. And let us believe that, if we have humility, we will draw down grace—this great power of

Christ—and we will bear witness even unto martyrdom. But we must never believe that— Nor even now will we say that I have the strength to bear witness as a martyr. Let no one dare to say that. He will say only: with the power of Christ. I am weak, I am incapable, I am a sinner, I am clay, I am nothing, I am zero. The most useless of men. Humility will draw down the power of Christ, and it will conquer.

So, my children, this is the study we will undertake. We will study what we are taught, so that Christ may be formed within us. May He be formed within us through His virtues. And little by little may we become, by grace, by participation, as far as is possible for human beings, may we be born gods by grace; and man, receiving the divine grace, has the power to do what Christ Himself did. Miracles from Christ, miracles from the Saints.

Christ raised the dead, and the Saints too raised people. Wherever Christ descends with His supernatural power, He works even ordinary things in a supernatural way. Only through humility will we advance. We make distinctions. Essence is good. Love is good. Almsgiving is good. Compassion is beautiful. But what stands above them all?

We must become humble. And what stands even above humility? Discernment. If discernment is lacking and we act without it, we will go wrong even in the exercise of the virtues, as Seraphim says. May that never happen. Do not become too humble, lest you be rejected. What does it mean to say: do not be overly righteous, lest you fall into impiety?

That is, do not load on more than is needed. Even the virtues require a steady hand at the rudder. The good, if it is not done well, is no longer good. The good, if it is not done well in its manner, its method, its timing, its measure, will not bring good; it will bring harm. Fasting is good, but it is a means, not an end. The means have an end, and the end is humility, and from humility comes discretion. This is why we must regulate everything in our lives by the discretion of the spiritual father. The spiritual father will tell you how to fast, when to receive Holy Communion,

how to think, how to strike the enemy, what you must do in each situation. And so, by the greater discretion of the spiritual father who is enlightened by the Holy Spirit, regulate yourself. So then, fasting is holy, but it is a means; we will regulate it according to the spiritual father and according to our own powers of soul and body. Let us not go beyond what is proper, beyond what we are able to do.

Measure in all things, for excess cancels out the benefit. Now I pray that Christ may grant us grace, may grant us illumination and strength and health, that we may fast within and without, in body and in soul. And even more, may He grant us the grace of almsgiving. May we show mercy to those souls who are in the other world. Let us not forget them. And when we do not forget them, then Christ will not forget us either,

when we too, perhaps, come into that same need. So, let us pray in this way, and our fasting will be acceptable before God. Amen. Amen Have mercy, you too, little Virgin.
