Talk: Avoiding Hell. Delivered abroad.
There will be signs in the moon and the stars, and on the earth distress among the nations, bewildered by the roaring and surging of the sea. People will faint with fear and with foreboding over what is coming upon the inhabited world.
For the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.
But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the cares of this life, and that Day come upon you suddenly. For it will come like a snare upon all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.
So stay awake and keep watch, praying at every moment, that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that are about to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.
These are the words of Christ our Master, who came into the world to save mankind. Christ foretold all of this to us, and here He says: "Heaven and earth shall pass away" — heaven and earth will be gone. "But my words shall not pass away" — they will remain; my words will come to pass. That is, they will be worked out in people's lives in exactly the way He describes here.
Here Christ says: «For many will come in my name, saying, I am the Christ.» Many will come and they will say, «I am the Christ.»
As we expect—and as we firmly believe—the Antichrist will say precisely this: “I am Christ. I am God. Come to me, and I will give you everything.” All you need to do is believe in me and accept the seal of your obedience to me.
‥
Therefore, do not follow after them. Do not believe them or follow them. Put no trust in what they tell you: “You see, Christ is here! This is the Messiah! Follow him, and we shall be saved.”
“We will be saved.” I am not saying that wars will follow. You will hear of wars and upheavals. There will be great turmoil. Do not be terrified; do not lose heart. Do not let your faith in Me grow weak. Remain steadfast and firmly grounded in the faith. For such great signs will occur that, just think, as the Scripture says, people will faint with fear and with foreboding of what is coming. These are the things you will hear are about to happen.
The things that will happen will be so terrifying that people will lose heart and courage. They will be under tremendous pressure and driven into a dreadful plight, because they will not only begin to see these events taking place, but will also see them continuing to unfold.
After all these great events have taken place, the people of that time will be utterly terrified, frightened, and deeply troubled. Then, at the height of that terrible state, the Second Coming will take place. Christ will come, the trumpets will sound, the dead will rise, and so forth.
And here Christ tells us, “Take heed to yourselves. See that this Day, these great events and this immense calamity, do not find you in a state of sin.” Do not become weighed down by drunkenness, excess, or the cares of a life burdened with all kinds of worldly concerns. Keep your confession in order and your sins confessed.
Be in good order—clean and ready for the great Day when Christ comes to judge the world. That Day, He says, will come like a snare. It will come so suddenly that people will, in a sense, be caught without warning.
“Watch,” He says. Do not sleep. Be watchful in prayer and watchful in your thoughts, in your work, in your family, and everywhere. “Watch, therefore, at all times”—at every hour and every moment—“praying,” that is, offering prayer.
In a manner of speaking, we must keep four hundred eyes open. We must let nothing escape us and be negligent nowhere, lest we be caught in that dreadful snare. Afterward we will not be saved, because there will no longer be any way of salvation.
And He says: «Pray that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that are about to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.» And to stand, He means, at the right hand of Christ, the Great Judge.
And when the Son of Man comes in His glory, with all the holy angels with Him,
and then He will sit upon the throne of His glory.
And all the nations will be gathered before him — the billions upon billions of human beings. And our Christ, as the Judge seated in glory, will separate this whole great flock, this whole vast assembly of people raised from the dead.
He will separate them into two groups. The righteous—those who sinned but were cleansed through metanoia, through good works, through martyrdom, and through the blood of the Lamb—He will place at His right hand and draw near to Himself. He will fill them with glory and honor. His face will shine like ten thousand suns, and all that glory will be reflected upon the faces of the righteous, so that they too will become like suns.
Each one will shine just as Christ shines. Think of the glory, think of the honor, think of the beauty—things our minds cannot comprehend.
Sadly, those on the other side, those at His left hand—for that is where they will be led—will be utterly wretched and shrouded in darkness,
because their works will have been works of the devil. The faces of the righteous will certainly be radiant, because they performed the works of light and metanoia. But the sinners at His left hand performed the works of the devil, and therefore they will bear the darkness and deformity of the demons.
Sometimes we see a person who is steeped in sin, and even his outward features reveal exactly what kind of life he leads.
How much more will this be so when they stand condemned, especially when they are seized at that moment by dreadful, terrifying, inconceivable anguish. Everything will speak, everything will cry out, everything will become a voice proclaiming that, within a few moments, this great calamity will come upon them: they will be led into eternal Hell with the demons. They will dwell and live together with the demons—a terrifying thing.
You may have seen a demon-possessed person—how the demon convulses him, throws him to the ground, and inflicts so many things upon him that those who witness it are filled with sorrow.
Now imagine that there is not only one demon, but countless thousands and millions, with all those people mixed among them. May God stretch out His hand and keep every human being from descending there. It is inconceivable; we cannot describe it.
And so He will separate the two groups. God will take the one that belongs to Him, while the other will follow the evil demons who guided them into evil and sin. This is how the devil rewards those who obey him.
And Christ the Master, after separating the people—the whole flock, that entire multitude—will turn to those at His right hand and say to His own: “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”
“For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed Me; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.” This is what He will say to those at His right hand. They, in turn, will answer, “When did we see You hungry or thirsty, in prison or naked, and so forth?”
Then Christ will honor them and explain that these things they did—these many acts of mercy through which love is expressed—they did for the poor, the naked, the imprisoned, and the rest.
“But behind the faces of the poor, the weak, the imprisoned, and the sick, it was I who was present.”
Therefore, because you showed Me all this love in action, it is as though He says to them: “I thank you, and now I will give you your reward. Everything you sent ahead to Heaven through your many acts of mercy and love, I kept safe.
I held it all in My treasury, and now I am honoring every claim.” When we performed an act of mercy, perhaps we never thought of it this way: that God makes Himself a debtor to man. No, we did not think of that.
And yet God is just, and He fulfills everything He has promised.
After blessing them, He will answer them: “You did all these things for Me, and I freely give you My Kingdom.”
Sadly, He will then turn toward those at His left hand.
Christ would never have wished to say what He said, for He is the God of love, compassion, and mercy toward mankind. Yet although He is love, mercy toward mankind, forgiveness, and compassion, He is also justice.
All His other graces have found their place and been put into effect in our life. God shows us mercy, He pours out His tender compassions upon us, He forgives us again and again, without ceasing. But His justice—that He has not given permission to take effect, so that in this way the work of His love and His compassion might have room to save us.
But after death—at the Second Coming, of course—all these virtues that were at work in this life will step aside. They will have completed their work, and justice will now take precedence.
Then He will turn and say to those on His left: “Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire, which has been prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry, and you gave me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not take me in; I was naked, and you did not clothe me; I was sick and in prison, and you did not visit me.”
And they too will answer, “When did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or sick, and so forth?” And Christ will say that, since you did not do these things for the brethren who represent Me,
you did not do them for Me either. Therefore, since your deeds were without compassion and without love, you behaved toward Me, in a sense, with cruelty, despite all the good things I had given you. And if you had given anything away, it would not have been your own; I blessed it for you, and I gave it to you. Yet you were not moved even to think of the poor, the hungry, the stranger, the sick, or the prisoner.
And sadly, He pronounces the final sentence, separating the two forever and for all eternity. The one group will go to Paradise with Christ and the angels, while the sinners will go with the demons.
And there, in the prophecy of the Prophet Isaiah, the prophet speaks of the Second Coming. He says that the Ancient of Days will sit in glory upon His throne, and so forth, to judge the whole inhabited world, and from beneath His throne a river of fire will flow.
And in a vision granted to a Saint, God showed him how the Second Coming would take place. After the great judgment had been completed, a tremendous noise began to be heard, a terrifying roar. The sinners understood exactly what was about to happen, and because the roar of that river caused such great confusion, they began to tremble with terror and horror.
Then the river flowed on and swept all the sinners into Hell. The evil angels cast them into it. And this holy man saw that the righteous were deeply, deeply grieved, because they witnessed this great destruction of human beings and thought that among them might be a father or mother, children, a husband or wife, and so many relatives, from whom they had now been separated forever.
Christ, seeing that the righteous were deeply grieved, said to Himself, “Now that justice has been fulfilled, it is no longer right for My people, who suffered so much in the world, to grieve.”
They endured contempt, temptations, tribulations, pain, and so much more. That is why they were counted worthy to stand at His right hand. Now, in the place of rest, joy, and gladness, it is not fitting that they should grieve over sinners.
It was enough that they had been terribly afflicted and had suffered during their earthly lives; this is why joy is theirs now. And Christ, by His divine power, removed from the memory of the righteous, it is said, the very existence of those who were being punished, as well as the existence of Hell.
It was like what happens when something affects a person’s mind and the functioning of the nous, the spiritual intellect, so that he knows and remembers nothing. God brought them into a perfect state of forgetfulness, removing from the memory of the righteous all remembrance of the people who had been condemned and even of the existence of Hell.
When the whole matter had come to its end, all the ranks of angels, accompanying Christ, together with the Saints at His right hand, ascended into Heaven in glory, just as that holy man saw. They chanted the resurrectional troparia: “It is the day of Resurrection; let us be radiant, O people! Pascha, the Lord’s Pascha”—an eternal Pascha, a Pascha that never ends, the eternal Sabbath rest.
The eternal Sabbath rest means repose—eternal repose. And when the Saints entered Paradise, which would then be opened, and saw how many good things God had prepared with infinite perfection and wisdom, they were overwhelmed with awe and said to themselves, “But what did we offer? What did we do to receive all these good things? Was it because we went to Holy Confession? Because we wept, fasted, made some ascetic struggle, or showed patient endurance amid temptations, tribulation, illness, disability, and so many other things that it was only natural for us to encounter and endure?”
And for all this, Christ our Savior, our Lamb who was slain, will count us worthy of these good things for all eternity.
Yes, this is how richly Christ rewards us, because God is infinitely rich. No matter how much God gives, He never even begins to exhaust His gifts. As for those on the left—may God grant that no one should ever descend there—
sadly, they will live forever in the horror of being utterly stripped of light and of God. Here we may be sinners, sick, disabled—whatever you wish to call us. Yet we see the sun, we see the light, we have some companionship, we have a little bed where we can rest, and we have someone with whom we can speak.
However poor or disabled a person may be, he still has something in this life. But that other life is terrifying.
The benefit of remembering Hell is exceedingly great. As a contemporary Saint of the Holy Mountain said, “Keep your nous, your spiritual intellect, in Hell, and Hell will leave you alone.” Remember what happens down there. When a person keeps these things in mind and meditates upon them, he will surely find the path of light and salvation, because after such meditation he will never wish to descend there.
We forget Hell, and that is why we will go to Hell—because we forget it. If we remembered it, we would struggle to escape it. And everything sorrowful in this life, compared with what we contemplate there, would seem like a game.
Indeed, it is nothing by comparison. Our life is so fleeting that in a single moment, in one minute, we may depart from this life and enter eternity. However terrible our suffering here may be, whether for a minute or for many years, it is nothing compared with eternal Hell, where there is no consolation, no light, and no God.
Among the other torments of Hell is the absence of every human being. A person in that darkness will think, “There is no one else.” This too is a kind of Hell: to feel that you are entirely alone there, because there is no one else.
Saint Macarius of Egypt was a great ascetic. One day, as he was walking, he came upon a skull and tapped it with his little staff. “Who were you,” he asked, “when you were alive?”
The skull answered, “I was a priest of the idols. And you are Macarius, the Saint of God, whose prayers reach even us—
those who are in Hell and in darkness.” The Saint asked, “But what benefit can my prayer bring you idolaters? I can understand my prayers reaching Christians, the Orthodox, but I cannot understand how they could reach an idolater—especially a priest of idols, a leader of the demons.”
“And yet, Father, your prayers do reach us. A very faint light appears, and each of us can see the back of another. Then we realize that someone else is near me—near us—and this brings me some consolation,” he said.
“Oh, come now,” says the Saint, “is that supposed to be a comfort?” And he struck it again with his little staff, grieved at what he had just been told. Of course, the tempter — the devil — in order to take away the benefit that comes from the remembrance of hell,
It tries to dull the sharpness of the matter and to present this doctrine of the Church as something different from the true extent of that misery, so as to lessen the spiritual benefit it gives to Christians.
And it influences people—even people of the Church and theologians—to teach false doctrine and say that Hell will exist only in the conscience of those who are condemned, rather than being Hell in actual reality, with an objective existence of its own.
This is wrong. They say, “Do you really believe there will be cauldrons in which people boil, fires and flames that burn them, worms, and all the rest? And how could that be, since the soul is spiritual?” At the resurrection of the dead, the bodies will rise, but they will be made incorruptible and spiritual. Christ, the firstborn from the dead and the Lord of Glory, was buried with a natural body and rose in bodily incorruption.
In just this way, the dead too will be raised incorruptible. As the Apostle Paul says, “It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption.” This mortal body must put on immortality. And after the Resurrection, Christ entered and stood among the disciples even though the doors were shut.
Before Christ completed His work upon the Cross and was buried,
Before, in the natural course of things, because He possessed a human nature united with His divinity, He had to enter through the doorway, through the door, in order to come into the place where the disciples were. But now, after the Resurrection, He entered while the doors were shut.
So too will the bodies of those who rise be made incorruptible. And we believe that Hell will be in the conscience. But in that case, someone could say, “I will make my conscience brutish and unfeeling, so that I will remember nothing.”
In other words, we might say that within their conscience the condemned will remember that they grieved God, embittered Him, sinned, blasphemed Him, and forgot Him—and that this memory will gnaw at them like a worm and burn them like fire.
But a person can make himself unfeeling; he can deaden his conscience completely until he feels nothing. Then what becomes of Hell? What becomes of the doctrine?
But that's not where the issue lies. We see it here, in what the Lord told us. At the Judgment He said: 'Depart from Me.'
And to those on His left He says: “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”
Therefore, He sends those on His left into the Hell prepared for the demons. Yet demons have no bodies.
The demons do not have a conscience that reproves them for their deeds and makes them suffer. They know that, though they were angels, they are now demons; they know that they do evil against God—or rather, that they harm human beings—and they know that they will be condemned to Hell.
They know this, but they are not tormented by their conscience in such a way that their Hell consists merely of the suffering of conscience.
But they go away into the eternal fire, a reality suited to the spiritual nature of the demons. Do you understand? After the Resurrection, the incorruptible body and the soul will form one hypostasis, one person. Human beings will be spiritual.
The body will no longer possess matter in its present form or depend upon material things. This has nothing to do with Hell existing merely in the conscience. The punishment itself will be spiritual and objectively real. Paradise, likewise, does not exist merely in the conscience.
Back then I did good works, I gave rest to God, and so on. And so I have the enjoyment of God — the way a spiritual person enjoys Him now, in prayer. But there Christ spoke about Paradise. The Apostle Paul went and saw Paradise, and he said that God has prepared such great good things: «Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.»
Therefore, God has prepared these things within a spiritual order suited to the soul and to the whole human person, body and soul, as humanity will then exist. He has prepared Paradise. Correspondingly, Hell has also been prepared: Hell will be spiritual, its torments spiritual, its darkness spiritual, its fire spiritual, its worm spiritual, and its punishment spiritual, suited to the nature of the demons.
If Hell had no objective spiritual reality, the demons could not be punished. They are not punished by leaping about in material flames. They have no bodily need, and material fire cannot burn them. A spiritual nature is not burned by matter.
Therefore, the Hell of the demons is spiritual, and it is there that Christ sends those on His left. Christ makes this clear in the passages we have read. And the conclusion I wish to draw is what Christ Himself said: may the great events and the snare of the Second Coming not overtake us in drunkenness, excess, and the cares of this life.
We may be building and creating, yet burdened with needless cares—not with necessary ones, of course. As long as we live, we must attend to the necessities of life. These needs require us to take thought, go to work, earn our daily bread, and make a living. Such things are necessary, and we must do them.
But what must we avoid? The needless and excessive things with which we burden ourselves for no good reason. May the Second Coming and these events not find us so preoccupied with such cares that we have forgotten God. When the great destruction came in the days of Noah, the Old Testament says that it found people absorbed in their concerns—marrying, celebrating, carrying on with their affairs, building and making things.
And then, in an instant, the weather changed. The rain began, the floodgates of heaven opened, and the springs of the Abyss poured forth rivers of water. The whole world was flooded, and the waters rose thousands of metres, as high as the highest mountain in the world, Mount Ararat.
So how did the water rise so high through rain alone? It did not. The floodgates of heaven were opened, as were the springs of the abyss beneath the earth. The waters burst forth, the world was flooded, and every living thing drowned except Noah’s family and the animals God had summoned, so that after the destruction and the flood, human beings and animals might once again “be fruitful and multiply.”
This judgment and punishment from God overtook the people while they were occupied with their worldly cares, because they did not believe Noah. For a hundred years, they had watched him building and preparing the ark, and they would ask him, “What are you doing?” He answered, “Because of our sins, God will send rain; a flood will come, and we will drown. Repent.”
But they laughed. “What is this man talking about? Where did he find such fairy tales?” Yet when the flood came, it swept them all away and drowned them. Then they ran to save themselves—but where could they escape? Could they escape the wrath of God?
The wrath of God caught them like a snare, on a day and at an hour they did not expect. Our Christ, our Saviour, in His providence for all that is to come, foretells these things to us through His Holy Gospel so that we may take heed and prepare ourselves, but also so that we may be left without excuse.
We must have no excuse at all—no claim that He did not tell us, that we had not read or heard these things, and therefore had not prepared. No. Christ told us everything in full detail. And the Church continually—the Holy Fathers, the preachers, and all the Fathers of God—speaks of what we must labour to accomplish: the works of light and of the Gospel, so that we may escape this great destruction.
And unfortunately, everything we see—especially the prevalence of sin—tells us that the end is drawing near and that great events are approaching. We hear of wars that will come. We hear of and see earthquakes; we see sin and satanism. What do our eyes not see? Technology will advance so far that it will deprive us of both sound reason and faith.
What more are we waiting for? In one sense, each person’s death is his own Second Coming. Yet we also await and discern something that will affect everyone. Therefore, let us prepare ourselves continually. Let us be cleansed and purify ourselves. Let us perform works of light—precisely what our Christ commands—the works of love, all the many forms that love takes. Let our hearts become innocent, like the heart of a little child. For the Lord said that unless we become like children in innocence and love, we shall not be able to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
He does not mean that we should have a child’s understanding or reasoning, but that we must attain a childlike innocence of heart toward our neighbour. Others may harm us, insult us, mock us, ridicule us, and slander us.
Yet we must preserve the innocent heart of a child. In this way we shall be saved. But if our ego leads us to begin asserting our rights and demanding justice for ourselves, we shall be found guilty, because the Gospel does not tell us to repay evil for evil.
And above all else, let us keep remembering and meditating on that fearful day of judgment. And, as that holy man said, the one who lived in our own times on the Holy Mountain, let us practice the holy meditation on hell, on Hades: let us look at how they live down there, the people who have gone to that place, so that we ourselves may escape that condition.
And when this meditation becomes an abiding reality and a way of life within us, we shall immediately be benefited, without even realizing it.
We shall receive these blessings and be helped to avoid the works of darkness, and in this way we shall be delivered from that great and terrible Hell. Let us give thanks.
Let us give thanks to Christ our God, glorify Him, bow down before Him, and worship Him, for He became man so that we might become gods by grace. Let us glorify and worship Him, because He sacrificed Himself for us.
And for our sake, He opened our eyes and illumined us. He marked out for us the path of light and helps us to walk along it. To sustain us on the way, He gave us food and drink—His Body and Blood. He gave us weapons of light with which to strike the enemies on every side: the Gospel, in which everything is written. And so we may reach the end victorious, at the Golden—
On the Golden Gate there is an inscription: "The Jerusalem Above." The Jerusalem above is waiting for her children. And her children are all those who will follow the pattern, the prototype. And that prototype is our Christ. Amen.

Ο άνθρωπος μπορεί να κάνει τον αναίσθητο, να αναισθητοποιήσει τελείως τη συνείδησή του και δεν με αισθάνονται τίποτε. Και τότε η κόλασις, και τότε το δόγμα, πού πάει;
Αυτοί γελούσαν. «Τι λέει τούτος εδώ; Πού τα βρήκε τα παραμύθια αυτά;» Αλλά όταν ήρθε ο κατακλυσμός, ήρε άπαντας, τους πήρε και τους έπνιξε όλους. Τρέχανε τότε να γλιτώσουν, αλλά από πού θα γλιτώσουν; Από την οργή του Θεού;
