Tonight, our Church celebrates the two chief Apostles, Peter and Paul. And I think that, in their honor, we should speak this evening about these two holy figures. Now, we have spoken of these two persons on other occasions as well, at length and above all of Paul, to whom we owe so much, because it was him that our Lord Jesus
Christ used to make himself known to us. But we have also spoken of Peter before, of their conversion, their fall, and generally their whole way of life. Even so, something must again be said tonight, and so I thought, with the help of God and by their grace, to take something from their teaching. In this way we will draw near, in a certain sense, to their persons and to their work. Wherever you open the fourteen epistles of Paul and the two catholic epistles of Peter,
you will indeed find yourself standing before the things that, painstakingly, they want to remind us of. There is one thing above all that man fails to heed, and the two of them, as though by common agreement, have insisted on it and brought it to light. What people fail above all to heed is their own end. The end, for a man, has two faces. His end may have to do with the end of the world, or his end may be his own death.
In one or other of these two ways, man will one day find himself face to face with his Creator, whether he believes it or not, whether he wills it or not. Satan, as the men of the Spirit relate, up until the third century used to strike the Church of Christ head-on; but he was being defeated, and so he changed his tactics. He hid his presence. This is an art of Satan's,
to conceal his presence and to corrupt man's attention concerning his departure from this world, with those words that many a time we will have heard whispered in our ear, telling us: we still have time. You will draw near to many people who are at the very end of old age, and you will see that, although they have not just both feet in the grave but two and a half feet in the grave, you will of course hear them say: once we grow old,
we ought to attend to these things. And the person is ninety-five years old. I was speaking with a lady of ninety-five, and she says to me: of course, Mr. Panagopoulos, as soon as I understand these things and come into my years, I will of course attend to all these things. Now, when she will come into her years, I do not know, for I do not know when this 'age' is supposed to begin. So this is a trick of Satan, and it does happen; and this trick of Satan, this method, we Christians carry on ourselves as well, something we have never confessed: that we have deceived people,
even though we have proof that people do not have days, do not even have hours. Instead of calling their attention to it and saying to them: if even the young depart, at the age you are, at the age we are, with the health we have lost, and so on, ought we not perhaps to be ready, to have our ticket in hand at any moment? We do not say it, because we lead people astray, and we have never confessed that, in certain cases, we failed to tell them the truth. And the result was the very opposite: the people departed this life, their book was closed, and we wrapped them up, sealed them, and sent them to Satan.
Then afterward we hold memorial services for them, with a bishop presiding—the very people whom we ourselves sealed and sent away—and no one will ever open them again where we have sent them from here. For they could have gone with their accounts still open, able to receive from here whatever the love of Christ sends through people, by means of His Orthodox Church. So I say that both the Apostle Paul and the Apostle Peter did not fail to remind us of this in their epistles. Of course, I want to believe, and I would want to be proved a liar in what I believe,
that hardly anyone, if it be some small percentage, some two per cent. The rest of you will not even have read from your Gospel, from your Scripture, these things that I am going to read to you and set before you tonight, which are the views of the holy men our Church celebrates tonight. And consequently it is not God who is at fault, who left us the recipe, told us what would come to pass, told us not to be deceived and not to heed these whistlings of Satan, that we still have time; for this has been the case from then on, it is not something happening only now.
And if you read this passage that our Church has enlisted in the funeral services, which is from First Thessalonians, where Paul says: I do not want you to be ignorant, he says, that we the living who remain, says Paul, and this 'we the living who remain' he writes with an eta, not with an ypsilon, that is, await. We shall be caught up in the clouds, into the air, to meet Jesus. That is to say, he was expecting the Second Coming from that time onward. Yet about two thousand unbroken years have passed,
and things remain as they were. So when one hears these things, he immediately says: you sit there and listen to these fairy tales? And what about you? Nothing? Has anything changed? Have you seen anything being prepared? Nothing is going to change, nor will anything change; rather, these things will come upon each person unexpectedly, either through death or through the Second Coming.
Both of these writers express views on this matter. Allow me to present the Apostle Peter, who writes the following: that we must take heed, for we will be punished. God is good, but He is also just. Most unfortunately, people strip away the attribute of God's justice and speak always of a God who is only good. Yes, but everyone who is good must also be just. He is not truly good who is not just.
So the justice of God, the other half, they hide, and they speak always only of God being good. So Peter writes in his Second Epistle, in his second chapter, verse 4, the following: 'For if God,' if God, he says, 'spared not the angels that sinned.' When the angels sinned, He cast them down to Tartarus. What became of the angels? They became satans, they were punished. 'For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but, having cast them down to Tartarus in chains of darkness,
delivered them to be kept unto judgment. And He spared not the ancient world, but preserved Noah, the eighth, a herald of righteousness.' Did He not bring on a flood? Are we better than those people of that time? Are we today better than Sodom or Gomorrah of that time? Or do we not have our own Sodom and Gomorrah today? He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly, and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes He condemned them to destruction,
making them an example to those who would live in ungodliness. All of this, he says, He set down as an example, so that the ungodly would know what awaits them. It is the same God: He who cast the first-created human beings out for a single transgression; He who cast the angels into Tartarus because they conceived the thought of setting their throne above the throne of God; He who rained down fire and brimstone and burned Sodom and Gomorrah; He who opened the depths and the floodgates, inundated the world, and spared only one family, the family of Noah.
He is the same God. And He delivered righteous Lot, who was tormented by the depraved conduct of the lawless. He protected Lot, it says, from the perversion of the people who had gone there at that time. For that righteous man, dwelling among them and seeing and hearing what they did, day after day tormented his righteous soul because of their lawless deeds. The Lord knows how to rescue the godly out of temptation; the godly, he says, He knows how to protect, but the unjust He keeps under punishment for the day of judgment.
And Satan has not been punished today. For many are scandalized: where is God? If there were justice, why does He not punish? Did Satan torment Job's wife? God handed her over into his hand, did He not? Did he strike her down, or did he not? So someone who lives today as a sinner, ungodly, whatever you want to call him, it is because God blesses him and God bears with him. And does God say to him: well done, my fine fellow,
I let you go on living because I like what you do? He does not like it, but you see, Satan... He left a great example; He left this man, He left this woman, for Satan to use against him tomorrow. People would say: good for Mrs. Noah. And this one, Mrs. Noah, she was a treasure and a weapon in the hands of Satan, against her, against Job, rather, forgive me. So the unjust, he says, He keeps under punishment for the day of judgment,
And chiefly those who walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise dominion. Presumptuous are they... So God always keeps His mind both on the godly and on the ungodly. If His justice does not act now, this is not because it does not exist or because it cannot. It exists and it can, but He is longsuffering. He mentions this further on, in his next chapter. I am reading this from chapter three of the same Apostle Peter’s Second Epistle:
“Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle”—for he also wrote a first catholic epistle—“in both of which I stir up your sincere mind by way of remembrance. ” I want to awaken you. That you may be mindful of the words spoken before by the holy Prophets, and of the commandment of the Lord and Saviour delivered through your Apostles. To remind you, he says, of the things Christ has spoken through the Prophets and through the Apostles.
Knowing this first, this I want you to know first of all, that in the last days there shall come scoffers. Various people will come who will mock. Walking after their own lusts, they will do their own thing, they will live their own life. At the same time they will say, to justify why they are indifferent to everything. Saying, where is the promise of His Second Coming? Where is it, 2,000 years have passed and nothing, they say, has appeared. For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.
Where the sun used to rise it still rises, where it used to set it still sets; we have winter, harvest-time, summer, spring, the seasons alternate one with another; nothing, he says, has changed. Where do these things come from that they tell us? Leave it, then, these are fairy tales, the words of people who have an interest in frightening others with a life beyond the grave, with Hell and so on, in order to exploit them. For since the fathers fell asleep, then,
all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation. For this is hidden from them, it escapes them, he says, people forget, he says, and this is what they want, because they like it to escape them. That the heavens were of old, the heavens existed long ago, he says, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water, and waters existed both before and after. Held together by the word of God; God spoke, and the waters were divided, and the sea came forth on its own and the dry land on its own. The world of that time, being flooded with water, perished; they forgot, he says. Did not those people too say in those days: where is God?
And yet God helped them so that they might repent; they did not repent, and in a single moment He flooded them. Placing Noah inside the Ark, with the provisions he needed to be kept alive for the six months that the flood was going to last. And all the rest, outside, were drowned. When Noah received the command to build this ship on dry land, which was sheer madness in the eyes of the people,
he took a hundred whole years to complete it. He was 500 years old, and he finished it at 600. Can you imagine how many people, over those 100 years, saw this great ocean liner sitting on dry land. Can you imagine how many laborers worked on this ship? How many ate their bread from it, how many were paid wages, how many perhaps even took advantage of old Noah, saying he was mad, building a ship on dry land. Surely, if you asked the old man, 'What are you doing here, grandfather?
What are you doing here, old man?' he would have said, 'Children, God is going to destroy the world, God is going to send a flood.' The old man is crazy. Take the money and let's go to the tavern and eat. The old man built it, and they saw him loading provisions into it. He did not carry them all by himself—after all, he was a five-hundred-year-old man. So many animals, birds, and wild beasts were to go inside, along with eight people,
and they had to survive for six months—at least half a year. A complete store of food was needed. People certainly helped; they were paid their wages, animals were put to work, and they carried the provisions and loaded them into the ark. These things did not happen somewhere out of the way; they happened in the open. Yet not one of those men consented to go inside, because I want to believe Noah would not have put him out. He would rather have left a buffalo outside, left a crocodile, left I don't know what else, and put the man in instead.
Not even these craftsmen went inside, and they all perished. He struck the wooden semantron, and surely those people saw this wonder: the animals arriving, the wild beasts arriving, the birds arriving, coming of their own accord and going inside. And surely this did not happen at night, nor in a fraction of a second. They must have passed through villages, passed through cities, and gone on and entered the ark. This happened; that whole region saw it, millions of eyes saw it, and not one consented to go inside.
'Noah is a fool.' Finally, his family also entered: Shem, Ham, and Japheth, his three sons, together with their wives, Mrs. Noah, and Mr. Noah. And God Himself shut the door, shutting out those who remained outside. Then, once they were inside the ark, while it was still on dry land, the fountains of the great deep began to burst open. For it did not only rain; the depths also opened, from below and from above, and the Flood came.
There the Ark remained upon the surface of the waters for six whole months. Wild beasts survived, ravens survived, animals survived—they survived and survived—but the craftsmen who built the Ark did not survive. The same thing happens today. God has not changed. God’s justice is the same, and so is His love. God’s love is the same, and God’s mind is the same. God does not evolve.
Once God has spoken, His word stands. Some people forget this, he says. They do not want to look to the past and learn from it for the present and the future. Why are they trying today to erase our history? So that these people may enslave us and plunge us into ruin. For if we are to stand firm, our history will show us how. History is always the well from which a person draws guidance for the present and the future. When this has taken place in its history, it cannot be otherwise.
Some people forget this—it escapes their notice, he says—but it did happen. And now, in recent times, science comes and digs; it speaks of Ararat and of the Ark, and it finds remains of the Flood. Thus science confirms what Holy Scripture says—things written fifteen hundred years before Christ.
Indeed, he says, so it will be. You forget, then, he says, that “the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the Word of God”—the One who divided the waters and brought forth life, dry land, and all the rest. He brought them into being. “But the heavens and the earth that now exist,” my friends, he says, “have been stored up by the same Word”—the very Word of Christ—“and are being kept for fire until the day of judgment and the destruction of ungodly people. The heaven and the earth, he says,
those who claim that for two thousand years everything stays the same, therefore nothing exists, they lie and so on. I want you to know, he says, that the moment that same word speaks, the One who gave the command back then, they will be burned, they will vanish in an instant. What we call civilization is laughable, and what we call progress and technology is nonsense, if you will allow me the expression, to give it some life. When God says 'Fire, ' may He not give the command ‘Fire’—but once the command ‘Fire’ is given,
nothing remains, because I don't think it is anything more than a little lime, a few stones and a little iron, that's all it is, isn't that so? It is nothing else. Only that it is galvanized, manufactured, and we called it civilization; we use these things and so on. And again it is by the laws this God has, the laws we ourselves discovered only recently. And we play the clever one, when, if we were truly clever, we should have discovered them from the very time God made them.
For these laws did not come into being now; they already existed. The discoveries happen now, and man struts because he discovers the things that were already made for him from the time the world began. Man has made no progress at all; he is very backward. He merely discovers laws that already existed, and how much more he still has left to discover. And these things ought not to draw him away from God, from the Master Builder, from the Architect who made them. Rather, they should bring him closer,
and he should ask His forgiveness and say, 'Creator, ' if he did not want to call Him God, 'Creator, I could not have made these things, nor could my mother-in-law.' 'Forgive me, that for so many years You have had these made, and I knew nothing. So You have still more that I have not discovered; enlighten me, open my eyes, teach me.' But egoism does not allow it: 'We discovered them, we went to the moon,' and what did we do there? We banished God from the moon.
Go live on the moon, then; take and load the sack of oxygen on your back to survive, when God tells you, here, this earth. But this little speck, why? You must be more, why? It is as if I were to give you a pearl, a tiny one, and to give you, I don't know, five tons of glass. Which would you take? You would take that pearl. Because you know that in it is the worth, the value.
Does God not know where the value is? What is the earth compared to the other constellations and so on? Let Thomas now go and ask what it is; it does not interest me what it is. I tell you that the worth of its weight lies in the life that you neither made nor will ever make, O man. Now, if you take existing life and put it into tubes so that it may be preserved and multiplied, you are doing nothing new. Can you create life for me without using life?
That is what I want to hear about. If you can create life without life—without a living sperm cell and without a living egg—I will kiss your feet. Until then, however, stay in your place. But man is prideful and does not want to admit these things. This world, then, is being kept in reserve, Scripture says, so that when Christ punishes the ungodly, He will destroy it all; He will burn up heaven and earth, and they will pass away. Isaiah wrote about this eight hundred and fifty years before Christ.
we look for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness shall dwell. And John was counted worthy to see that new heaven and that new earth. In a heaven and an earth we shall live, sirs. Open the twenty-first chapter of John, that is, of Revelation, to see what it says. And I saw a new heaven—with alpha-iota—and a new earth—with alpha-iota; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away,
and the sea was no more. Who are you to correct these things? You cannot comprehend them; each is entirely different from the other. How could we understand anything beyond this? It did not exist. And the same holy Apostle goes on to say, "But of this one thing be not ignorant, my beloved" — that is, he says, do not let this slip past you, do not go on talking about thousands of years and so forth — "that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years,
and a thousand years as one day." What does it mean to speak of a thousand years to God, when of His Kingdom there shall be no end? So what is a billion years, let us grant it, before eternity? A drop in the ocean—even that is saying too much. What do two thousand years mean, or five thousand years, or a hundred thousand years? “The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness.
” Some think and say that He is delaying, that these things will never happen, and as proof they point out that they have not happened to this day. But He is long-suffering toward us—that is the word: He is long-suffering toward us. It is a compound word: He keeps His anger far off. The anger is there, but He postpones it. What happened to the trial? It was adjourned; it was not canceled.
It was adjourned. The facts of the case remain the same; they simply have not yet been heard. When will the anger break forth? When will the wrath break forth? “As a thief in the night,” they both say with one voice. Just as death comes like a thief in the night, so the Lord’s coming will come in exactly the same way, like a thief in the night. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise,
as some men count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us" — He is longsuffering, he says, for our sake — "not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." He is longsuffering, he says, for the sake of some among us, whom He sees will repent, who will say within themselves, so that they too may come and be saved. You know how it is: it is like those good bus drivers who know poverty and need from the inside, who take the last run at night.
With a few rowdy youngsters and so on, midnight — "close up, let's go." Outside, someone is dragging himself along, another comes running with his shopping basket — "close up, let's go" — and he leaves him out there to take a taxi. Where is he to find the money for that? Up to now he has been working just to afford a taxi — his week's wages would be gone. He did not stop, because midnight came, twelve o'clock. He saw the man, the conductor shouts at him, the others shout at him, "close up, twelve, we're leaving."
But Christ looks in the mirror at those who are coming, even those still coming round the corner; He sees them and waits for them and gathers them in, and gathers them in. This is what He does, and He does not do it only now — He always does it. He does not take us when He ought to, exactly when we deserve to be punished, but He adds time. He sees that tomorrow I will turn back; He sees that Paul must be apprehended in Damascus; He sees that this other one must be over there. And for everyone God makes provision, yet we take it and ask, where is God?
You ask where God is regarding Him — why do you not ask about yourself, where is God? You, so holy, you have lived holy lives up to now? Do you see that God has cut off a hundred pairs of your ears and a hundred noses by now, for all you have done? You look at the next man who did wrong, who erred, who killed, who acted unjustly, and so on. You and I — we are the saints. These words we must hold within us.
By them the goodness and the kindness of our Christ is made known. That our Christ does not always act toward us as we deserve. He is not unbending in these cases. And He does many things on our behalf that scandalize certain saints — "how can all this belong to His kindness?" Allow me — it is about these very things that Peter writes. Poor Peter; Peter has heard words from our Christ that pierce his heart day and night: "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you,
that he may sift you as wheat" — tonight the devil will sift you — "but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not, and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren." The good I do you tonight, praying that you will not take your own life, that you will not be lost, and giving you room to repent — and with this cock that crows to remind you, and I make it a prophecy to you: "before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice." This is what I want you also to do tomorrow with those close to you: always be long-suffering.
Do not go to extremes; do not be inflexible. For if God were to execute strict justice, then the words of David would be fulfilled: “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? ” Yet we are always looking outward and never inward. We see the faults of others, but not our own. Do you not remember—or rather, do we not remember—what we used to read in the Chrestomathy: that a man carries two sacks? He has placed his own behind him, where others can see it,
while he carries the sack of other people’s faults before his eyes. That is what it says here. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness" — as certain witless men say who play with their worry beads in the coffee-house — no, he says, "but is longsuffering toward us" — He is longsuffering, he says, for our sake — "not willing" — because He does not will — "that any" — certain ones He sees — "should perish" — He sees them coming, close to being saved — "but that all should come to repentance."
For everyone, throughout their lives, Christ has labored with longsuffering, and has added to their time. I must confess from this pulpit that repeatedly Christ has shown me scandalous mercy; otherwise I would have been cast into Tartarus many years ago. In the years of the Occupation and in Albania I ought to have died seven times, and miraculously I died not once. And this not from my own righteousness — for righteousness there was none, I did not even know what it was — but from the mercy of God,
who knew I would turn back, and He found a way to cover me until I returned to wage this little struggle, that I might be able to be saved, and that the portion of blood Christ has shed for my own soul as well might not go to waste. For every human being has a sure claim before God: a deposit of the blood of Jesus in the bank of God, in the justice of God. This truth should be written here, before our eyes, just as the Jews had certain sayings written on their phylacteries and on the fringes of their garments.
We should read it every day: “My God, if back then—my God, if back then—my Christ, if back then You had allowed this or that to happen, I should not be alive today. ” This is what we must remember. And yet, “the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. ” It will come, Scripture says; it will indeed come. My beloved, God’s longsuffering is like this—let me give you an image. Imagine a dropper releasing one drop every hundred years, with a glass beneath it receiving each drop:
tap, tap, tap, and so on. How do you know, O man, when this patient endurance of God will overflow? How do you know whether today is the last day, whether today is the final drop of God’s patient endurance? How do you know? How can you say, “God will wait for me”? Why should He wait for you, and why should He give you more time? What would be the point, when you have lived so badly for so many years and have done nothing all these years?
Last year, the year before, and this year too, you remain the same. And every day, when others ask you—or when you ask yourself—you say that you are still the same. In that case, what use is life to you? “The day of the Lord will come,” he says, “like a thief in the night, on which the heavens will pass away with a great noise. ” The heavens will vanish from before your eyes. “Where will they go? ” someone asks me. “Back to where they were before they came,” I tell him.
“They will return to the same storehouse. Do you know that storehouse? ” He says, “No, I do not. Go and ask the heavens, “Where were you before you came here? ” Then go in, and you will find it in the storehouse.
With a great roar, the elements will be consumed by fire and dissolved; they will burn and melt away. Just as a candle burns and melts, and iron too melts, so they will be dissolved. The moon, the sun—everything, absolutely everything—the earth and all the works within it, our skyscrapers and all the rest, will be utterly consumed by fire. These are the things Peter writes. Allow me to go back a little, to find what Paul has to say on the very same subject.
I read from the First Epistle to the Thessalonians, chapter five, verse one and following. 'But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that anything be written to you.' There is no need, he says, for me to write these things to you. Meaning, you ought to know them already; they should be on your mind at all times. 'For you yourselves know perfectly well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.' You never know how they will rob you; if you knew how they meant to rob you, they would never manage it.
But they catch you asleep, and they rob you. “For when they say…” Just the other day I heard someone saying, “Do you know what I said the EEC means? ‘Peace and safety. ’ Put that in your trousers! ” I replied, “For when they say, ‘Peace and safety, ’ then sudden destruction comes upon them. ” That is when destruction comes, precisely when you think, “Now I am safe and secure. ” And then, suddenly, destruction comes—like,
to use this beautiful example, the labor pains of a woman. We may be talking now, and shortly afterward the birth begins and the pains start. She does not know when they will begin; they come unexpectedly. “As labor pains come upon a woman with child, so they shall not escape. ” These birth pangs cannot be avoided, he says; there is no escaping this birth. And neither shall we escape the terrors, the calamities, and all that we are going to suffer because of that other affair. But you, brethren, are not in darkness. If we wish to believe that we are Christians,
we must not be asleep in darkness, so that the day should overtake us like a thief—so that the light should not come upon us and the day catch us like a thief in the darkness, catching us asleep. You are all sons of light and sons of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. He says this to the Thessalonians. But are we Thessalonians? That is the question. May we be so.
Yet I fear that we are not. It will catch us asleep—and it does catch many of us asleep. I have simply borrowed the view of his brother Paul as well, for Paul calls Peter his brother, though I do not know whether you are aware of that. Although they differ in knowledge, the two of them uphold the Church equally. And when a lady—she is not here with us tonight—painted an icon of the Apostle Paul in his honor, intending to take it to the Church, The Holy Apostle Paul came to her home that night and said,
“Do not dare take the icon to the Church without my brother. That is why I said I borrowed from his brother, and now I return to the thought of the fisherman, Peter. 'Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved' - after these things, my brethren, he says, when all things will perish and be dissolved - 'what manner of persons ought you to be in all holy conduct and godliness?' How ought we to be, after the things we are awaiting and the things that are to come, 'looking for and hastening unto the coming of the day of God,
in which the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat.' And they come to an end. 'Nevertheless we, according to His promise' - the promise the prophet Isaiah spoke in the Old Testament - 'according to His promise look for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.' 'Therefore, beloved,
seeing that you look for such things' - awaiting these things - 'be diligent that you may be found of Him in peace, without spot and blameless.' For a person's soul to be without spot and undefiled, it must have a close relationship with the Orthodox Church of Christ. There, in the Church, the soul is healed of its wounds. There the one who fell among the robbers is healed, in this inn,
with the help of the innkeepers—the clergy. Nowhere else is the soul cared for. Woe to those who have fallen into heresies and have remained far from the light, in darkness. Around this time Father Ephraim, abbot of the Holy Monastery of Philotheou on the Holy Mountain, an illumined man, had gone abroad, both to America and to Canada. Among the many strange things that happened to them there, this strange thing also took place: a Protestant couple,
belonging to the Baptist heresy - we have such people here too - was watching one evening as people went to a certain house where they were making confession. Their own minister, the one who received them, tried to keep them away from there and not even allow them to head in that direction. But the wife, who had a certain special inclination, kept insisting to her husband that, once the people had left, they go to meet this elder and hear him,
even though they knew no Greek, nor did our elder know any English. But people were found who helped them speak. The wife above all was left astonished, and she declared that she would no longer follow this group of Baptists, that heresy of theirs. The husband told it to their priest, and a whole assault was launched against this family; they even bound the lady not to approach this elder again for as long as she remained there.
But something within her kept telling her that they were not standing on solid ground where they were, and that what this elder said was the truth. The result was that one night the elder appeared to her full of light, called her, and said this: my child, flee from the darkness and come to the light of Christ. She saw him so alive; she asked him many things and spoke with him in the dream, and in the morning she said to her husband:
I am leaving you, I am going there. This and this and this Christ showed me tonight. For I prayed and said to Him: I want light, Christ; where is the light? And He showed me where the light is: that they have the light and we do not. Now, these are events of ten or twelve days ago. Not back in those days, but right now. Miracles still happen. So let me go on. Let us then be diligent, he says, to be found spotless and blameless in peace,
and to count the longsuffering of our Lord as salvation. Let us not regard this longsuffering of the Lord as if it were nothing, or as weakness, but as salvation; this longsuffering of God is a saving thing. “My God, be longsuffering toward me, and I will repay You everything. ” And Peter also appeals to our beloved brother Paul: “According to the wisdom given to him, he wrote to you, as he does in all his epistles, speaking in them about these things. ” That is,
in all his epistles he writes about God’s longsuffering and about the way of man’s salvation. “In these epistles there are some things hard to understand”—some passages, he says, that a person cannot easily comprehend. Ah, and the unlearned, who interpret them in their own way, and the unstable, twist them, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. Here he shows that not everyone understands the Scriptures, which is why each Protestant takes a Gospel for himself, and every year sets up a polity of his own. Truth is here, truth is there, truth is in this one,
truth is in that one, and not one of them actually holds the truth. So I would like, after what these two men have written, to remind myself, and to remind us all. I do not know how many days, how many years, how many months, how many hours, how many minutes He has appointed for each one. Every person, coming into the world, holds in his hand a lit vigil lamp. God has poured into it the measure of oil needed to keep him alive. Some do not take care to keep this lamp burning. For to keep a lamp lit, as happens with many, for example, who carry the Holy Fire and want to keep it,
to have the Light of the Resurrection for as much of the year as they can, they tend a second lamp as well and pass the flame back and forth between them; they make sure it never goes out, that it is kept ever-burning. They are careful that no draft from a window puts it out; they handle it with care, and so they keep the lamp burning for a long time. This is exactly what a person must do for himself: to look after the matter of his health, not to do foolish things, not to take his own life, not to break the natural laws and be scraped off some iron post one early morning, drunk.
In someone's arms, in someone's embrace, or falling off some cliff, and the rest; then he himself snuffs out the lamp that God gave him to live eighty years, and at twenty or twenty-two he throws it away and goes up there, and God says to him: take yourself back down from here, because I did not call you. That counts as suicide. So I do not know how much time each person has. What I do know—from what I have read, and what I think you too understand—is this: we must make good use of what God has entrusted to us. The wisdom of our Holy Fathers is this: “Grant us more time,
that I may make a beginning of repentance. ” Never believe that you are already living in repentance. Never allow yourself to believe that. For you may have gone to Confession yesterday, yet as soon as you left the Church, you may have sinned with your eyes. You may have sinned with your mouth; you may have sinned with your hand that evening. Every fall calls for a rising again. You fell, you slipped; will you not get up? And if you fell again on the step, will you not get up again?
And if you fell again in the garden, will you not get up again? And however many times you fall in your life, will you not get up? That is what it is: falls and rising again. To fall is human; to persist in it is satanic. Struggle on. And when Christ sees that a person fears death, not death when they lay you in the ground, but the death that is the separation of the soul from God, not the death that is the separation of the soul from the body. The separation of the soul from the body is liberation; it calls for applause.
But fear that other separation—the second death—the separation of the soul from God. That is the death you must fear. If, then, a person keeps in mind at every moment that he may depart on his journey, he will always take care to be ready, so that when he sees Christ coming, he may say to Him, “Behold, here I am, Lord. ” And I pray that, through the intercessions of these holy chief Apostles, as well as those of the Twelve and of the Three Holy Hierarchs, under whose blessing we remain, we may attain this Kingdom—not only we, but the whole world. Amen.
