To this line of thoughts around the theme of the Divine Liturgy, and more specifically the Holy Eucharist, I would like to add something more, so that it may be considered somewhat complete.
People very often do not have good relations with one another. Sometimes, as they say, they have good reason not to; other times without good reason; though in truth it is always without good reason in the eyes of God. God does not accept that anyone should, with seeming justification, be at enmity with another and have no relationship with him. And if not family relations, friendly or personal relations, then at least what we call a good morning of God whenever one happens to encounter the other. Yet there are people who for years now have had no good morning to give,
and these enmities arise even within families, and these are the longest-lasting of all. With a friend you have quarreled with, you can restore your relationship more easily than with your own brother, born from the same womb. You can patch things up more easily with a neighbor, with a business partner, with someone on the outside, with whoever, than with a close relative of your own. The fiercest devils are found among beloved members of one's own family. And these feuds last a long time, and many times they are sealed even by the grave. I once heard of a grandmother who said:
I do not want him to come to my grave. Do you understand what this is meant to say? Some of you here do understand. And yet these same people go to church, these people pray in their homes, these people offer incense in their homes, they light a candle, they go on the feast days, at Pascha, at Christmas, or on other days to the Church, they receive Holy Communion, but a good morning, no. How they reconcile these things, I do not know. They have been led astray, of course. And even if they keep up a false, surface peace,
at the root there is bitterness. And if outwardly he gives a good morning, behind it there is the power to gnaw away at the other. Not merely to accuse him, but truly to gnaw at him. It is a fundamental matter, this matter of peace and of forgiveness, and most of all for Christians, but generally for society and for people as a whole. Peace is what gives a person the opportunity to live in some smooth and quiet way, and even to bring these wars themselves to rest. But unfortunately it is not taken into account. If out in society, in public life, in our dealings,
it is needed, how much more is it needed in the church. That is why, if a person pays attention, he will be convicted, and he must withdraw from the church, either set things in order or withdraw. Because when the Church opens her lips, and there is, let us say, a deacon in the Church, and he lifts up his wing, lifts up that orarion on high, the first exclamation will be: In peace let us pray to the Lord.
In peace. If there is no peace, the Litany stops. The second exclamation, For the peace from above let us pray to the Lord; that is to say, the very foundation of the liturgy, of this greatest manifestation in the Church, is Peace, which of course then goes on further still: For the peace of the whole world; Peace be unto all; Peace be unto you; My peace I give unto you; and a couple of other instances besides.
All this is set forth so that this service may take place, and yet this peace is not there. Further down: Let us love one another, that with one mind we may confess Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And before Holy Communion: forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. If one wished to glean through it, he would see that every five words it speaks again of peace. Because if this prerequisite is not there, the person's prayer does not go up,
nor does it draw the divine Grace back down. Thine own of Thine own we offer unto Thee. Why do you offer them to me? So that You may bless them and send them back to us, that we may receive grace to offer. So this peace is lacking, I say many times, even on the very day we are going to receive Holy Communion. And many times our spiritual father in a way presses us: you will speak with this one, with that one, you will say good morning, and only then will you receive Communion.
Yet again many pass over this and do their own thing; they assure themselves that they are right and that right is on their side, and therefore the other one must come to ask forgiveness, and not he himself. So I would like us to shed light on this matter as much as we can, because without peace, without love, nothing can be done. When Christ rose, that very evening, the moment He stood before His disciples, He said peace twice: peace be unto you, peace be unto you, twice over. Everything begins there.
If there is no peace, for one reason or another—whether, as we say, with justification or without—nothing is accepted. Bitterness poisons peace; it poisons prayer; it poisons our supplication. No answer is given by God. God desires peace; He desires calm waters and serenity. Of course, a person often finds this difficult and does not strive for it. He will not sacrifice his ego; he will not humble himself, and so people remain estranged from one another. Satan has seized them by the collar,
pulling one this way and holding the other over there. He tells the first, ‘He must ask your forgiveness, ’ and tells the other, ‘He must ask your forgiveness. ’ If one is older, he says, ‘Respect is called for here—but you are in the right. ’ And so he keeps them there. Neither one will put pen to paper, because of his pride. And both remain satisfied with themselves, each waiting for the other to humble himself first; and so they remain enemies for years, often over the most trivial things, over things that amount to nothing.
We behave as though something terrible had happened—as though they had killed our child, or we had killed theirs—when it was all over some worthless matter, over a single word that once slipped out. A word never slips out of your mouth, does it? Only out of the other person’s! How, then, will you be able to appear before God? And what if God takes hold of this and says, “If You, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? ” If Christ were to make a detailed accounting of our own sins,
rather than overlooking them in general—and there are so many of them—who could receive forgiveness? We do not take this seriously enough. Everything, my dear one, stands or falls on two commandments: to love God and to love your neighbor. Here is the secret. Once our Christ received a question from a cunning lawyer of that time. He put the question to Him: which is the greatest commandment of the law? And our Christ, like the little pupil the man supposed Him to be, at once becomes the teacher and says to him:
what is written in the law, how do you read it? He sat him down on the stool with that turn of the question, and the lawyer was forced to say: I find, he says, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy soul, with all thy strength, with all thy heart, with all thy mind. Good, He says to him, that is it. And there is a second commandment as well. And thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the prophets and the law. On these two commandments.
On loving your God and loving your neighbor. He does not separate them and say that, since you love your God, there is no need to love your neighbor, because he harmed you, because he wronged you, because he insulted you. However much harm he did you, it is both together; a person cannot separate which is greater and which is lesser, because in another place another Evangelist writes and tells how Christ answers here. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, this is the first and great commandment, and He goes on of His own accord and says,
and the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself; like unto it, that is, it is reckoned the same: as much as you will be punished if you do not love God, so much also if you do not love your neighbor. Does this exist in Christianity? The people who step into the church to light a candle, as they say, to make the sign of the cross, to ask something of Christ, of the Most Holy Theotokos, of the Saints, do they have this peace and this love and this forgiveness? For, my beloved, man stands at the meeting point of two directions.
Here is man; above him is God, and before him is his fellow human being. He is called to love God, who is above him, and the person who stands before him. He cannot say, “I love God, but I do not love my neighbor. ” For John comes, seizes him by the hair, and says: “Come here. You say that you love God, whom you do not see. How, then, can you fail to love the person here, whom you do see? You are lying. For if you do not love your neighbor, neither do you love God, because God commanded you to love your enemy. ” Therefore…
If someone wants to see whether, and how far, he has progressed in the Christian life—whether he has become, as we might say, a spiritually mature Christian—let him see whether he has the strength to forgive. Everything depends on that, not on whether he can give a few coins. People give easily, especially if their name is going to be written on some plaque. Out of vainglory, they will give even more.
To have the strength to forgive, a person needs an immeasurable memory and an immeasurable forgetfulness: to remember every kindness others have shown him and to forget every wrong they have done him. If a person does not cultivate himself in this way, he will one day find himself facing the justice of God. And I ask: do we love our enemies? We do not. In fact, we hardly even love our friends unless there is something to gain. For we are always saying—and you hear it too,
even if you do not say it yourselves—“I had nothing to gain by doing that. ” In other words, there must always be some benefit. If there is no material, fleshly, worldly, selfish gain, we would not give even water to our guardian angel. That is what we are like. We always expect something in return: “What will I gain by doing this? What will come of it? ” But how differently the deeply cultivated Christian feels! He feels wretched, he cannot sleep; I would even say he is afraid the day may not dawn
and he might depart with enmity toward the other. 'But I am in the right!' Woe to you if you were in the wrong. Now that you are in the right, I want you to take the lesser place and show your humility, so that peace may come. For the divine John Chrysostom says that when two people are embittered for whatever reason, Satan seizes them, as I told you, and holds them there. And he keeps whispering these words: to the one he says the other must come first, to the other he says the same, and they both stay there,
deceived by the devil and by their own ego. Christ, he says, steps into the middle and lays down a beautiful bouquet, and on it he writes: the bouquet of the peacemaker. Bow down, he says, whether you are in the right or in the wrong, and say, 'I am at fault, forgive me.' And snatch up this bouquet, he tells you. Are you going to wait, seated high on the chariot of your ego, for the other to come and ask your forgiveness? You take the lower place—whether you are the lady of the house, the boss, or whoever else you may be, however distinguished you think you are.
Take the lower place. Remove this obstacle that Satan has placed between you, and seize the bouquet, he says. If you have studied the Beatitudes, you will have found there that Christ calls the peacemaker blessed and a son of God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Nowhere else does he say it. The merciful are good too, and those who fast,
and the virgins; all of them are good, beautiful. But he did not call them children of God. Why? He tells you: the peacemakers, those who bridge what is divided and bring it together, in families, in workplaces, in society, in the Church. Why? Because they do the very work that Christ did, the Son of God, who made peace, who bridged the chasm between man and God.
And who were the two at war? Man with God. And he came and was crucified between heaven and earth, to unite these things that were divided. He sacrificed himself to reconcile man with God, not God with man; for God never bears enmity. It was man who became the rebel. Man declared the war against God, so says the divine John Chrysostom. And we, for years now, sleep peacefully even though bitterness remains,
while unforgiveness does very great harm and spoils even the rest of the good that exists within a household, within a person. For some of us do a little and some do much; we do something. Somewhere we find ourselves helping someone in need: a sick person, an orphan, in a hospital. In some situation, like the one we had recently with Cyprus, or with other earthquake victims, a person rushes to help, to show the depth of his compassion toward his fellow man.
Yet it accomplishes nothing, because within this beautiful, good work there is this bitterness that spoils the whole lump of dough. I think it was from this very place that I once told you what Saint Kosmas of Aetolia recounts. Saint Kosmas says that two men once went to confession. One was religiously observant, while the other was a beginner and, as we were saying, a hardened sinner. The first man had guided him and taken him by the hand, leading him to confession. He had him confess first,
lest Satan deceive him and keep him from confessing at all. The newcomer came out joyful and sat down to wait while the other man went in to confess. But when the religious man came out, he was sullen, and they set off down the road. Then the more experienced Christian put a question to the newly illumined man. 'What happened,' he says, 'what penance did he give you?' 'He gave me no penance at all.' 'He gave you no penance?' 'No.'
'Are you serious?' 'Serious.' 'Wait here,' he says, and he turns back to call the priest to account, because he gave no penance to that man, you understand this kind of piety. So he goes in seething, the same way: 'Did you leave anything out?' 'No,' he says, 'I was scandalized by you.' 'Why,' he says, 'were you scandalized?' 'Because that man who confessed before me, I brought him here.' 'Christ brought him, my child, through you. You are being used as an instrument of God's providence.'
'I brought him.' 'Yes, yes, yes, you brought him. But Christ brought him through you. So he belongs to Christ.' 'Anyway,' he says, 'anyway, I brought him.' Again his own refrain: 'I brought him, Christ did nothing.' 'Anyway. What is it you want?' And he says, 'He did not confess.
He wronged me. Because I heard, from a couple of words I said to him, that he is going to receive Communion, and me,' he says, 'you did not let me receive Communion. I want you to tell me,' he says, 'how could you weigh this, and let that man receive Communion, who has committed so many sins, and not let me?' 'So this is what scandalized you. Sit on that rock there and I will tell you. That man, my child, it is true, told me many things; from childhood he had done many, many shameful things.
All of these,' he says, 'I gathered up like logs, you know what logs are, timber, stumps, and I stacked them in a pile on top; he confessed small things, he confessed big things, he confessed whole trunks, crimes and the rest. I laid them all there in a pile. But at the end I put the question to him: do you have enemies, my child? He says, I do. What do you do with them? Ah, we do not treat them as enemies, Father, I bear them no malice.' “And if I bear a grudge against them,
and God bears one against me,” he said, “I am lost. As often as I am able to ask God’s forgiveness, at every moment, I forgive others. I forgive them; may they be blessed. ” “That, my child,” the priest said, “I regarded as a box of matches. He placed it in my hand, and I set fire to the pile of wood, and it all burned up. How quickly all that wood disappeared! So I told him to go and receive Holy Communion. But you came in, sat down, and I listened to you, and you did not tell me a single one of your sins. You came here and told me, ‘I do this, I do that, I belong to an association,
we give alms, we build things, we do this and that,’ and so on. 'I, though I had no wish to hear all this, because here people bring their sins, they do not bring their good works, for in confessions, for the most part, the women go and recount the good works they do, as a pretext.' “If I happen to commit some sin, let me cover it with a good deed. ” I will not say who said it; I heard it myself.
'At the end,' he says, 'I asked you whether you have enemies, and you told me you do. I asked you whether you forgive them, and you said, Father, even you, if you were in my place, you would not forgive them. He said, as if from the back of his throat, that one ought to forgive them, but he did not swallow it. And this,' he says, 'I took as a leaven, a starter that was bitter, and I set it to knead into the flour, and it ruined,' he says, 'all the flour. That is why,' he tells him, 'I did not let you receive Communion.' That is to say, forgiveness has the power to dissolve a person's sins,
and unforgiveness to bind sins. We alone are the ones who bind ourselves, and we alone are the ones who loose ourselves. For there are three phrases: a hearing for a hearing. You will listen, so that I listen to you; you will forgive, so that I forgive you; you will release, so that I release you. I cannot release you while you refuse to release. I cannot forgive you while you refuse to forgive. And yet this is the policy some people follow:
without forgiving themselves, they ask to be forgiven. And without having forgiven, they come to the great Peacemaker and receive Communion. How can you receive Communion? You do not receive forgiveness of sins; you receive condemnation, and you bring upon yourself the opposite results. But we pay no attention, we do not grasp it. If I told you there is no household today, of course I am being absolute, I should not say it, but if I told you there is no household today without a quarrel,
whether with those on one side or with others on the other, whether at work or among friends, but, but, but, but. There is so much bitterness in the world; this is not a right thing. Often we seek revenge, often we seek satisfaction. No, do not seek that. In the world there are two classes of people, victims and victimizers. Choose to be among the victims, to be the one who takes the kick and the slap, and never to be among the victimizers. If you want to find mercy in the eyes of God. If a person knew the price of sin—what it
costs when he sins against his fellow human beings, and what it costs when he sins against God—he would be terrified. If someone does something against you, that person incurs a debt, and you are the one to whom it is owed. Christ our Lord gave us a parable about these things: He reckons the transgression of His law at ten thousand talents, but an offense between fellow human beings at one hundred denarii—seventy drachmas.
Whatever sin you commit, I commit, he commits, gets charged at six million prewar drachmas before God, and off you go to pay it. And whatever they do to us, if they insult us, wrong us, kill us, dishonor us, that is charged at seventy drachmas, a hundred denarii. So if God should demand satisfaction, can you settle the account? Do you remember the parable of the ten thousand talents that He told? For whom did He tell it? For Himself? No, He told it for us.
The master ordered that his family be sold, everything, his money too. Be patient, the servant begged, and I will pay you back everything. And because he pleaded with him not to be sold, to show mercy, the master said, go, I forgive you the whole debt. It was never possible to pay back such a sum, because behind every transgression there is the blood of Christ, behind blasphemy, behind theft, behind refusing to bear children, behind refusing to fast, behind everything, it is the blood of Christ. In such a case he tramples on the blood of Christ; how will he pay it? You are paying with the blood of Christ.
Go, the master said, I forgive you. And when that servant went out, he found a fellow servant who owed him, he says, a hundred denarii, his own money. And the other man said to him, “Be patient with me, and I will repay you everything. ” He spoke exactly the same words that this man himself had spoken only moments before, when his own master had forgiven him a debt of six million. “Be patient with me,” he said, “and I will repay you everything. ” The amount was nothing by comparison, yet he seized the man and had him thrown into prison.
This is what we are like: we demand vengeance from others. But if God were to demand vengeance from you, what would become of you? And he gave the order: “Seize this wicked man and bind him. Should you not have shown mercy to your fellow servant, just as I showed mercy to you when you pleaded with me? Cast him into prison until he pays the very last farthing, the last penny. ” As if anyone could pay off debts while in prison! Can you settle a debt from prison? Of course not—so you never get out. “Thus will My heavenly Father do to you,” He says,
“if you do not forgive the trespasses of others.
Hold nothing against anyone. Go with God’s blessing, keep peace within your heart, and let that peace be seen. Bitterness between people is never acceptable. Of course, sometimes we are caught off guard; when we are tense or tired, words slip out. And those words, as you know, may be regarded, in the words of the wise Sirach,
as burning coals: many times they start a fire. So people must be careful—mothers-in-law must be careful, and so must daughters-in-law. Many things could have been covered over and handled with discernment, as we say. After all, we are human beings; we are not saints. We have blood in our veins, not water.
Satan will try to get the upper hand over us, but we can still avoid it. Paul says, let not the sun go down upon your wrath; do not let the evening come and the sun set while you still have anger against someone. Do you know whether you will live to see the morning? , and if you find yourselves all tangled up, who will untangle you after that? Here is where matters must be settled. And yet, some people do not pay attention. They do not pay attention as much as they should.
And you see people who are indifferent even toward this life of theirs, and even toward Paradise. And they butt heads like rams. You have had lawsuits for years on end; they wore away to nothing. The lawsuits devoured them. Bear this in mind, especially those of you who come from villages. When rams clash, they draw back. And often, in order to gain more force to strike the other ram, they tumble over the cliff behind them and are lost. Many people are like that.
The comparison may sound amusing, but what I am telling you is true. You can understand it; you are very intelligent. And yet he does not give up. You separate him from the other man and pull him away, but he comes back, looking for some way to go at him and fight again. Such malice! Others seek satisfaction like roosters. Have you seen roosters? In the end, when one has won, he still wants to defeat the other completely, so that he can climb on top of the ruins and crow, “I defeated him—woe to him!
” Christ does not want such things. Christ wants you to accept defeat rather than defeat another person. There are many people like that. “I put him in his place,” they say. Really? Do you realize that you stepped out of your own place? “I have my dignity,” someone says. Yes, but you lost your Christian dignity in order to protect your personal dignity. And when you sacrifice your Christian dignity to preserve a false dignity, you have failed; you have gained nothing.
Take these things I am telling you briefly, examine them calmly and dispassionately, and you will see how true they are. People who are at enmity suffer, whatever the cause may be—whatever the cause. And consider how even those who are not at fault still suffer. Take this example: your brother back in the village stops speaking to you because he wants you to send him money. You came here to work and provide for your family, yet he will not speak to you because you did not bring him gifts or send him money. Are you to blame?
No; it is his own wrongful attitude that is to blame. Yet it still grieves you to think that he feels this way. And even so, you send him money, help him, and look after him. But he had counted on receiving more. And since you did not send everything he had imagined—everything he needed, or whatever extra money he wanted to spend on amusements there, and so on—he becomes your enemy. And once again, you are grieved, if you are a person of conscience. Look at the way he thinks. Look at how Satan comes between you here, and how this man conducts himself.
All the more so when you are in the wrong, because many times we are. With just a little sacrifice of our ego, we could have avoided all this and spared both ourselves and others. But we are like the rooster, we want to climb up and crow that we won. Yet for the most part the roosters climb up onto ruins and crow that they have won. And this, I repeat, is what God does not want. Besides, at this point I want to tell you something else that Christ says in the law of the Gospel. In the sixth chapter of Matthew
you too should find these words. For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Plain and simple: if you do not forgive, you are not going to be forgiven. Christ will not forgive, it does not put it that way here. It does not say, if the Father forgives, then you forgive too; no, it says, if you do not forgive others their trespasses, the Father will not forgive you. And in the Our Father He has put us out in front: forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
Indeed, that is how I will do it, my child, he is afraid; we are pointing out to him God's own way, and we are saying, just as we have forgiven, so also forgive us. Indeed, exactly the same. He will forgive, but I see whether he has forgiven; He puts us out in front. It does not depend on the love, the condescension, and the mercy of God, but it depends on us. If we are willing, He puts us first; and the more God sees that we humble ourselves like this for love's sake, so that this enmity may be cleared away and the joy
of God and the blessing of God may come into our home, the more God becomes mercy. He is moved when He sees forgiveness between people, because He Himself became the cause for people to be forgiven before God. And there is another fearful thing: if this were applied, no offering should come to the Church, not a plate of kollyva nor a tray of kollyva in church, not a candle in church, nothing in church, nor would many people even be allowed to enter the church. If this were applied.
Listen to what He says. 'If therefore you bring your gift to the altar' — you take your gift, your candle, your prosphora, your kollyva, your coin, your candle, and you come to church — 'and there you remember that your brother has something against you, ' there, outside at the door, before you go in, you remember that with someone, and you really must remember it, you are not on good terms, and he holds bitterness toward you, then 'leave your gift there.'
Do not go and hand it to the priest; leave it there, before the altar, in front of the door, and 'first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.' Go and find your brother first, settle things, ask his forgiveness, perhaps make right the wrong, if you have done him one, and so on. and so forth, and then come and offer your gift. He does not say here that if the one you hold bitterness against is far away and you cannot find him. He does not say that if he, I don't know, you cannot get in touch with him. It poses a difficulty for you at that moment.
God does not accept it. You will settle this matter of yours, and afterward you will go and offer your gift. That is, you will resolve it for your offering to be accepted. Many would want peace with some fellow person, but they keep putting it off. With 'today' and 'tomorrow' they never make contact. It is true that often it is hard, because he is far away, where am I to find him. You will write a letter, you will make a phone call, you will find some way to get in touch with him. Let the other person know that, as far as you are concerned,
the window of reconciliation has been opened. “I have nothing against you. I ask your forgiveness for whatever happened. Perhaps I was at fault; perhaps you were. But I ask your forgiveness. As far as I am concerned, you are released from any debt toward me. If you wish, forgive me”—if he wishes. For even if the other person does not forgive you, so long as you ask forgiveness, you are in good standing before God. We often hear people say, “But I say good morning to him,
and he does not say it back. So how can I say it to him again? ” Do you have only one “good morning,” so that once you have given it, you must wait for him to send it back before you can give it to him again? Inside you there are many good mornings. You will say God's good morning to him, even if he never says it back to you. If he ever crosses your path again, you will say God's good morning again, even if he never says it back to you. From your side you are settled. Go on your way.
Paul writes plainly: 'as far as it depends on us' — this is in your hands; it is not in your hands to make him open his mouth and say good morning to you — 'as far as it depends on us, be at peace with all people.' This is in your hands: to say God's good morning, so that he may learn, so that he may come to know that you are not condemning him; and let certain others also take note, those who can play a reconciling role in such cases, so that people may learn that the other one, the opposite camp, speaks well of them.
“My child, who has been telling you such things? I heard him speaking very highly of you. ” And when he falls into your hands again, you will not take advantage of him or seek revenge. He will expect you to harm him, because he has wronged you and now you have the opportunity to repay him in kind; but instead, you are to do him good. Then it says, 'you heap coals of fire upon his head' — it is as if you set a pan of burning coals on his head.
For the harm he had done you, you should, since he fell into your hands, have done him great harm; but you, not only do you not harm him, you actually do him good, and then he is ashamed, he turns red, just as if you set a pan of coals on his head — that is exactly how he will feel, when instead of the harm he expects, because of the harm he had done you, he finds good. He will be ashamed; again it bears fruit. At the same time it is a science.
'But where am I to go and find him?' Go and find him. Your offering is not accepted, your memorial is not accepted; you cannot pray for your father, your mother is left waiting, they do not reach up there, as long as there is bitterness in the way, there is a cut-off. Sometimes we pick up the phone and what do they say? 'It's busy,' it says, the line is occupied, it's delayed, or other times, the fuse, poor thing, this is what happens.
The person who holds bitterness toward another has burned out the fuse of his telephone line with God; it is his shout to God, and God does not hear. Go, make right what you can — here, where He gives you every right — you will see to it; perhaps you will even suffer loss materially. Many times, for the sake of love and for peace, you may, if you are a good Christian, put money out of your own pocket to make peace with another. We do not pay attention to these things;
there are people embittered over five hundred, over a thousand, I don't know, let's say, drachmas — for you here it's the dollar — and yet we could, not over five hundred or a thousand, but I don't know how many times that amount, and we do not say, 'Look, what is your difference, what is it over, perhaps you don't have it' and so on, 'take this money, bring the bill, take it, and carry on' — we do not do it. This very thing once happened to me on the bus; I got on at Psychiko to go to Rafina, and I got on with...
The Ascension,
The Ascension, childish, when that accursed Satan came over there. I tell you, I deliberately smashed it to pieces; I am not lying to you. What does it cost you to offer peace and the life you were seeking? You should be ashamed, I tell you, for behaving like that. The Ascension,
The Ascension. And we multiply it, instead of limiting it. In the Wisdom of Sirach it says that from your own mouth comes the saliva that can put out the coal, and from the same mouth comes the air, and you can blow on it to start a fire. But it is up to you alone, it says, how you will use it. Do you understand? Still, before I finish, I want to tell you:
let us not forget that we are travelers, and the one beside us is a fellow-servant, a servant, and so am I. Before Jesus, I do not know who I am — put whatever great person you like — he is a servant, and the one beside you is a servant, he is your fellow-servant, and you have a dispute, yet you are going toward the judge. Be careful: before you reach the judge, come to terms along the way, it says. You will know this, if you ever had any dealings with the courts, that a bad settlement, it says,
is better than a good lawsuit — a bad settlement — because you may win the case but you will not win the soul of your fellow man; he will be your enemy over the right of it. It is better to suffer the loss and still have his love, and for him to feel ashamed before you because he truly wronged you once. Our Christ then expresses this thought in what I have been telling you about, the Sermon on the Mount, in the sixth chapter of Matthew, verses 23–26: “Come to terms quickly with your
adversary while you are still on the way with him. ” Take care, He says: settle matters with your adversary now, while you are both on your way to the judge. The Judge awaits us as we journey toward death; there, ahead of us, stands the Judge. So long as we remain on the road of this present life, while we still can, settle matters with your adversary. “Lest your adversary deliver you to the judge”—lest the one you have wronged hand you over to the judge—“and the judge deliver you to the officer,
” saying, “Bind this man, ” “and you be cast into prison,” and shut up there. “Amen, I say to you, you will by no means come out from there until you have paid the very last penny. ” But as I told you earlier, this means that you will never come out from there, because no one in prison has ever been able to earn money to repay a debt outside. The prisoner is shut away; he cannot earn money to repay it. He cannot do any deed worthy of metanoia, of repentance—something he can and must do now, while he is free.
No one knows what tomorrow will bring—or whether today may be the day. And if a person is wise, then just as he takes care to put his material affairs in order—his property, his will, and so on—so too, and above all, he should put his spiritual affairs in order. It is true that he will often meet with difficulty, but if a prayer is made, let him know that Christ goes ahead as the peacemaker, and a way is found by which what is needed is achieved. There is no case in which people should not make peace; there is only one case.
Never in your life should you form a friendship with someone with whom you have committed a sexual sin. Only in this case are you justified in not even saying good morning to the person with whom you sinned sexually, because Satan may ensnare you again and draw you back into his trap. Here is another detail: you will say good morning, but you will keep him a little at arm's length, because some people are like certain wild little dogs that bite. In other words, good morning, yes, but not into your home, no constant coming and going again,
because if you rebuild close relations, in and out of the house, back and forth, we will only grow bitter again. God's good morning, but keep it outside your home. That is the second prescription. And the third is for all people, without exception. So there is one exception and one half-exception. The first exception is this: you will not say so much as good morning to the person with whom you sinned carnally. This follows what Peter himself did: 'and he went out,
and wept bitterly' (Matthew 26:75); he withdrew far from the place of his sin and his fall, and in this way one will be able to escape.. These are the things I had to share with you tonight as well, in addition to all the rest.
