Christ is risen.

Once again, by the grace of the Lord,

we find ourselves in the season of the Pentecostarion. “Christ is risen” is still being proclaimed, and the Church is striving to demonstrate both the Resurrection of Jesus and His divinity. These are the two fundamental truths that every person must know to be real and certain: that Christ truly...

If Christ is not God, then there is no other way for us to be saved. There is no salvation for us. If Christ did not rise, then neither will we rise. But He was indeed God, and Christ did indeed rise.

Consequently, right faith and right praxis—the active Christian life founded upon this truth—create the conditions for a person’s salvation.

In our previous homily we spoke about the events of the Resurrection. Through two accounts, Thomas and the Myrrh-bearing Women, who were eyewitnesses, the Church has assured us that Christ has indeed risen.

These witnesses provide a defense for those who are willing to believe and a testimony against those who are not.

After all, we believe that our father is truly our father. Who told us so? Tradition told us that this man is our father and this woman is our mother. Yes, I accept her as my mother. I accept that this property belongs to me, because that is what I understand to be mine. This is my name, though I do not remember being given it. This man is my godfather. Yes, I accept all these things. This is Europe. This is Paris, though I have never been there. This is Moscow. I believe all these things without difficulty.

Why, then, should I not also believe those who were there and who confessed, even with their own blood, that Christ truly rose?

I can believe everything else — that doesn't bother Satan. But to believe in the Resurrection of Christ — that is what bothers Satan. And that is precisely why he assails it, His Resurrection.

Satan does not mind whatever else people may say Christ is. What troubles Satan is that Christ is God. That is why many acknowledge Him as a higher power, a superior being, an intelligent man, a reformer, a moral teacher, and so on and so forth.

But as soon as the discussion turns to His being God, people stumble and refuse to listen, because this is something that harms Satan. The divinity of Jesus troubles Satan, and the Resurrection of Jesus proves Satan’s defeat.

That is why these two truths are attacked. People invent countless kinds of belief so that they will not believe the one true faith. And those who are called unbelievers should perhaps not be called unbelievers at all, but rather people who are all too ready to believe.

For they believe nine hundred and ninety-nine lies in order to reject one truth. They do this so as not to believe the one and only truth which, as I have said, harms Satan. Matthew, Thomas, then, and the Myrrh-bearing Women speak to us and say: “Lord, Christ is risen. We paid for spices, took them with us, and went to the tomb, only to bring them back again.”

We had our difficulties: who would roll away for us the great stone that was there?

And yet He sent an angel ahead of us, who rolled away that great stone. In this way He helped us, and we saw that the tomb was empty. He also sent us an angel who said, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” He told us, “You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified”—not simply Jesus, but Jesus of Nazareth, the Crucified One, because there were others named Jesus in the Old Testament. All these things give us assurance.

We who came afterward are called to believe, so that we too may be blessed: “Because you have seen Me, Thomas, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” All of us who believe share in this blessing pronounced by Christ. We did not see Him and were not there at the time, yet we believed the preaching He sent to us through Paul, from the Pnyx here in Athens, and we have preserved it to this day.

After these two Sundays, on which the Church presented the eyewitnesses to remind us of the Resurrection and strengthen our faith in it, the Church now undertakes another struggle: to demonstrate that Christ was also God.

The divinity of Jesus is demonstrated not only by the Scriptures, but above all by His works.

Christ's works were divine, just as His death was divine, as I told you the day before yesterday. It was not a human death; He died in the opposite way. He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. With us it is the reverse: we give up our spirit first, and only then does our head fall.

That is a divine death. He died at the hour He chose, so that He might be clearly identified. His legs were not broken, and His body remained whole, like the lamb of the Hebrews in ancient times, so that people might recognize who He is.

That He is the One. After these efforts, then, He proceeds to speak about His divinity. As I said, His divinity is proclaimed again and is demonstrated both by the Scriptures and by the works of Christ.

As we have said before, when we were speaking at Christmas, Proclus, the disciple of John Chrysostom, describes it beautifully: “I behold the miracles and proclaim His divinity; I see His sufferings and do not deny His humanity.”

When He opens graves; when, by a word alone, He casts six thousand demons out of the man possessed by the Legion; when, with a little spittle and earth, He forms eyes; when He sets paralytics in motion; when He walks upon the sea; when He disappears; when He appears; when He prophesies, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man…” and so forth—

all these belong to His divine nature. These are not human deeds. But His weeping, His eating, His anguish, His sweating, and His sleeping belong to His human nature. If the Jehovah’s Witnesses wished, they could recognize Him as God, truly God. But they do not wish to; they deliberately close their eyes.

If they take up the Gospel, they will find the human nature of Jesus clearly distinguished from His divine nature. He was also man; He was not only God. And just as He was not only man, He was also God. He was “without father, without mother, without genealogy”: as man, He had a mother but no father; as God, He had the Father but no mother.

Melchizedek in the Old Testament was also a type of this. And since they claim to be students of the Scriptures, they ought to discover these things and bring them together, so that they do not stumble over the person of Jesus. For Christ says, “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” No one can reach Him without crossing this bridge called Christ.

The divinity of Jesus, then, is rejected by many. Therefore, throughout this series of Sundays, the Church, His spiritual Mother, presents the events that also demonstrate the divinity of Christ.

Not only the Resurrection, but the Divinity of Christ as well. This coming Sunday, as you know, is called the Sunday of the Paralytic. It speaks of a paralytic — not the one they uncovered the roof and lowered down, the man the Second Sunday of Great Lent sets before us, but a different paralytic, one who for thirty-eight years had been waiting for a miracle beside a pool, the one called in Hebrew Bethesda. There, in a certain way, at an hour no one expected, an angel would come down and stir the water, and whoever went in first was made well, no matter what illness had hold of him.

In this event, Christ comes once again to demonstrate His divine nature, His divinity. The event is recorded by the Evangelist John, who recounts it in the fifth chapter of his Gospel. I do not know whether you have ever given this matter any thought.

Allow me to speak about it this evening, as far as God grants me the grace to do so.

In the fifth chapter, verse 1, he says: «After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem, by the Sheep Gate, a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches.»

It says that there was a certain feast of the Jews. I do not know whether you have ever considered the subject of the Jewish feasts. The Jews had what we might call first-class feasts and second-class feasts—that is, principal feasts and lesser feasts.

The major feasts were Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. The minor ones were the Feast of the Lot, that is, Purim, the feasts of the new moons, and the Feast of the Dedication — that is, the cleansing of the temple, which was considered to have been defiled by Herod, as John writes for us in the tenth chapter of his Gospel.

Here opinions are divided. Some say that it was the lesser feast of Purim, the so-called Feast of Lots, which we read about in the third chapter of the Book of Esther. Others—for example, John Chrysostom and Cyril of Jerusalem—say that it was Pentecost.

In any case, it is not essential whether it was one feast or the other. What matters is that Christ truly went up there. That is the point. The passage also speaks of a pool called the Sheep Pool. Today, according to the tradition that has been preserved, it is called the Pool of the Virgin.

This pool was associated with the mysterious event I mentioned earlier: at intervals, and at an unexpected time, the angel would descend and stir the water.

According to the interpreters, this gate, this entrance, was called the Sheep Gate.

Perhaps because, as he says, it was through that gate that the sheep destined for sacrifice entered the city. The sheep destined for sacrifice entered the city through there. That is what the commentators tell us. There were also five porticoes, five arches, as we were saying. And one ancient commentator, Euthymios, speaks of five vaulted chambers—five vaulted arches—and there, at the same time, he saw this water...

“In these lay a great multitude of sick people—blind, lame, and paralyzed—waiting for the movement of the water.” They waited for the water to be stirred, “for an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water.”

“Then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease afflicted him.”

This was not some healing property arising from the water itself, like the therapeutic springs we have today, for example, where people go to be healed of arthritis, asthma, or whatever else.

It was not a property of the water. The water in itself had no healing property at all. It was the angel, the spirit, who brought healing to the first person who entered it.

As our Holy Fathers explain, this was a type of the baptismal font, a type and foreshadowing of Baptism.

What happens in Baptism? What is present there? There is a font, there is water, and there is the person who is sick in soul and is about to be baptized. And what else is needed? The Holy Spirit must bless this water.

If the Holy Spirit does not bless the water, if He does not bless the oil, nothing happens. If the water is not exorcised, so that the invisible satanic spirits may depart from it, nothing happens. That pool was a type of the baptismal font: a pool there, and a font here.

There, a spirit—the angel—and here, the Spirit. Water there, and water here. A sick person there, and a sick person here. There, whatever bodily disease he suffered from; here, whatever sin a person bears. For I think you know that Baptism cleanses a person not only from the burden of ancestral sin, but also from every deliberate sin he may have committed.

For this reason, some of the great Christians of the early Church who came to Christ—and who, of course, did not come from Christian families—understood this grace and power of Baptism and postponed being baptized for as long as they could.

For their baptism at that point would be a general cleansing of everything, so that they might be found somewhat cleaner as they came to the end of their lives. You surely know that baptism cleanses a person — assuming they are an adult — of more than the ancestral sin, and reconciles them with God. It also cleanses the sins they have committed by their own will. Of course, in an infant, who has no sins committed by his or her own will, it cleanses only the ancestral sin.

But if a person sins again and stains, so to speak, that white, God-woven garment of his soul, then there is what is called the second Baptism. Saint Gregory of Nyssa speaks of this Baptism when he says, “Even a single tear that falls is equal in power to the baptismal washing.”

This is metanoia—repentance—and confession, which are called the “second Baptism.” Repentance and confession cleanse the sins committed after Baptism, because Baptism itself is not performed a second time. There is “one faith, one Baptism,” says the Apostle Paul, because when a person is baptized, his Baptism corresponds to the burial of Christ.

“We have been united with Him in the likeness of the death of Jesus,” he says in the passage from the Apostle that is read at our Baptism. Thus, what took place there was a type and foreshadowing of the Baptism that takes place here, and the two have many parallels, so to speak.

There is, however, this difference: there, the spirit descended only from time to time, at an unexpected moment that no one knew beforehand. A person therefore had to keep watch and wait there, ready to run and seize grace, so to speak.

That is why, as the account goes on to tell us, this poor man—the paralytic who had suffered for thirty-eight years—was unable to run to the water. Others had less severe bodily ailments, or were helped by other people, and so they reached it first and took the blessing before him.

So, as I was saying, that baptism—the type—differs from this Baptism, which is the reality itself. That baptism took place only from time to time, whereas this Baptism is available whenever we desire it. If, for example, we wish to celebrate the Mystery here now, whether it is morning or evening, night or noon, summer or winter or spring, the moment the priest begins with “Blessed is God” and baptizes the person, the Holy Spirit cleanses those who come at any hour and, through Baptism, adds them to His Church.

This, then, is one difference between the working of that baptism—which was the type in those days—and the grace given now in Baptism, of which that earlier event was the type. All of this has served as a kind of prologue or introduction, so that the Evangelist may now tell us about another serious event.

This event had been unfolding there for many years. The passage continues: “Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.” This man had come there, we might say, before Christ was even born.

For if we accept that Christ passed by there before His Passion, when He was about thirty-three years old, this man had already been ill for thirty-eight years. He had therefore been there five years before Christ was born.

“When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been in that condition a long time, He said to him, ‘Do you want to be made well?’ The sick man answered Him, ‘Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up.’”

“While I am still trying to reach it, another man—someone stronger, we might say—goes down before me. And so I have been waiting here for thirty-eight whole years.”

Jesus knew that he had been suffering for a long time. What does this mean? Many people say, “God has forgotten me. God has abandoned me.” But God knows how long you have been suffering, what you are suffering from, and who is responsible for your suffering.

He always knows. Why, then, does He not come to heal you, or to heal me? There is a particular reason for this.

It lies within the wisdom and judgments of God. Do not try to force God’s hand, because if we are not careful, something worse may often result when God gives us a gift—our health, for example—or delivers us from some personal or family temptation, or whatever it may be.

We may suffer something worse; and in His all-wise providence, He does not free us from the bond around our foot, whether we became bound by it or He bound us with it, because He wishes to keep us safe.

This is the wisdom of God, and we must never try to force God’s hand. Let us become accustomed to saying to Him—until it becomes our faith and our own firm conviction—“Thy will be done in me.” Not my will. For many times we say to Him, “Make me well.” Nor should we try to bind Him by our vows, for many of us do not fulfill the vows we make.

How forgetful people are once they've been healed! It is affliction that keeps a person close to God. The Holy Spirit says clearly through David, as you yourselves know, 'In my affliction I remembered You' — in my affliction. And when things are going well, God is far up above us, as far as we're concerned.

But when circumstances change and clouds begin to gather—over our health, our family, our finances, and so forth—then we begin to bring God nearer, to bring Him down closer to us. And when things are restored and the cloud has passed, we send Him far above us again.

“We shall speak to You again whenever we need You.” Yes, we are ungrateful and thankless. If I had been able—or rather, if I had had the foresight—to keep a record of the ingratitude of the faithful who received miracles from the Theotokos and from Saint Nektarios of Aegina, I would tell you that sixty percent prove ungrateful. And they suffer the consequences of their ingratitude, because the Saints—and the divine in general—are not mocked. Yet God also has compassion on souls, and He allows the illness to return in order to remind us not to be forgetful and false.

Sixty percent—read the June issue of Saint Marina, which will be published in a few days, and you will see that, out of fifty miracles, forty are met with ingratitude. He healed them, yet those who had promised did not make the miracle known. No one asked them to do so; they made the promise themselves, and yet they proved false.

That is what we are, in truth. This is why Christ, in the case of the ten lepers, said, as you will remember, “Were not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?” Only one returned to give thanks. Yes, then, God often has good reason for not answering.

If one carefully considered the answer given by this man, who had spent thirty-eight years there in the damp, lying beneath the portico,

and had been formed so profoundly by it, one would understand why God often does not answer our requests and supplications. You saw how simply he replied to Him.

Imagine a man who sinned and, because of his sins, fell into the wretched state of paralysis and remained there for thirty-eight years. We must now reckon him to have been over sixty years old.

Thirty-eight years in that bed. And before that, didn't he need his twenty, twenty-two, twenty-five, thirty years to run wild and do all his foolishness, until he ended up paralysed? Oh, he needed them all right. So let's say twenty-five years, plus the thirty-eight: that brings us to sixty-three years old. And at sixty-three, if you're living out in the open country, you look like a man of sixty-three.

But if you live in dampness and sickness, surrounded by the cruelty and indifference of the world, you will look a hundred. That is only natural. So he must have aged far beyond his years. And now a young man comes before him and says, “Do you want to be made well?” What? Could there be anything more mocking, more strange, more incongruous? And yet he was not offended. He did not look at Him sideways with suspicion.

He spoke to Him in the most natural way, as though a tap had been opened and nothing but water could flow from it: “My dear man, my brother, my lord, I have no one to put me into the water. Whenever the water is stirred, someone else gets there before me, and so I have gone on doing this—waiting here for thirty-eight whole years.”

He spoke with complete naturalness. Only people who have been formed in great depth have the strength to respond in this way; no one else can. And it was his illness, together with the cruelty and indifference of the world, that formed him so deeply.

For because he was paralyzed, he naturally could not help himself reach the pool. Another man might have had a withered hand, but he still had the use of his legs. With two quick strides he could reach the water sooner.

Another might have had trouble with his eye, but he had the use of his legs. Another had one ailment or another. And so this man was always left behind, because he was paralyzed. What was needed, then, was what we might call organized charity.

It would have required, perhaps, four hands and four feet—or even more—but above all patient endurance and steadfastness: “We shall stay here; we shall remain beside you and help you.” But we are hardhearted.

What he said certainly has a doctrinal meaning, but it also has a moral meaning. The paralytic is a type of paralyzed humanity; and if the Man had not come—the one unique Man of whom the Evangelists say, “Behold the Man,” the Son of Man, Christ—humanity would have remained forever in its paralysis.

That is the doctrinal meaning symbolized here. But there is also a moral meaning. Many people have no one to help them, and so they remain paralyzed or end up becoming paralyzed. Do not think only of paralytics on crutches or in wheelchairs. That is not the only kind of paralysis meant here.

The Gospel is not concerned merely with the body; it is concerned even more with the spirit. There are young men and women who are paralyzed in soul, even though they have health and strength, jobs, possessions, and all kinds of advantages. They can strike a wall with their fist and punch a hole through it.

But their souls are paralyzed. And why is the soul paralyzed? Because they have no one—no true human being to help them. They have no mother, no father, no teacher, no example to follow.

Such people are absent from society. For if they were doing their work, others would not be paralyzed in soul. They are missing today, and people end up paralyzed even though they are physically healthy. They expect the social services to provide everything.

When someone falls ill, the lady of the house does not want to care for him, stay awake with him, or soil her hands. What is he to her? Someone of no importance. Yet if something happens to the dog, says Saint Justin the Philosopher, you run to it at once.

But when something happens to your rational creature, your fellow human being, you are indifferent. You say, “Call someone. That is not our responsibility.” The paralytic says, “I have no one; that is why I have suffered here all these years.” Someone could speak at great length about the depth of this matter.

You young people can go by yourselves tomorrow. Let us remain here beside his bed for a day or two and help this man to be healed. You can manage on your own; tomorrow you will still be able to go.

You still have the use of your hand, do you not? Yet for thirty-eight years no one ever gave up his place for this man, and so he remained there. They were indifferent. But he was cultivated in the depths of his soul, because all the malice, hardness, and indifference of the world helped him grow inwardly. It made him gentle and humble, like a carpet beneath the feet. For humility, they say, is related to the image of a carpet: just as a carpet is trodden underfoot without complaint, so it is with a person who is trampled upon by the malice of others.

If a person endures the malice and hardness of the world without complaint, he is cultivated in the depths of his soul, because, as you understand, no one can harm us unless we harm ourselves. These thoughts I have shared with you, as you know, are not always my own, but come from those whom I too study and read. Listen to how the Saints speak about such cases. There are many people...

There are people, as I told you, who have nothing, and for that reason they do not go, because they think they must bring something when they visit someone. But the divine Chrysostom says: “Even if you have nothing to bring to the sick person because of your poverty, bring yourself.” Offer yourself, he says; take yourself there. “And offer him the comfort of your words.” Say a few words to him and console him.

This is why the people have the saying, “Your words have filled me; take your bread away.” Of course, that saying can be understood in two ways, but I am using it in the good sense. You may not even have money to give.

You may not have money, but you have feet, a mouth, and words. Go, then; comfort him and help dispel the despondency of the person who has fallen into despair, for whom everything has become closed and bitter. I read in the newspaper the other day that a patient threw himself from the third floor and took his own life. Do you think the responsibility was entirely his—that the thought suddenly came to him in a single moment, and he fell? No. He had been abandoned.

He must have had relatives or acquaintances—people who kept their distance from the whole matter and left him in the hands of the professor and the medication, while shutting Christ out. Then the other one, the devil, drew near to him, and he fell to his death and took his own life.

The others, the ones who paid no attention to this case, will have a dreadful account to give. If they had comforted him, if they had helped him, if they had stood beside him, how would it have turned out? Would things have gone this way? And this is not the only case, as you know; there are many.

“Go in, then,” he says. “Comfort him, dispel his despondency, make him more cheerful and strengthen him in patient endurance.” Tell him, “Christ suffered; Christ was crucified. Are you sinless? Why do you not show patient endurance?”

Everything comes to an end. And even if you die—death is not the end. Take care of your immortal soul. You have a few words to say to him, something with which to comfort him and strengthen him. And we will signal you to come again if he cannot tell you.

Yes, he will receive that much comfort. But we do not do this. We prefer to play games at the café; we prefer to go to the cinema, the racetrack, or wherever else. We do everything except go where we may save another and ourselves be saved.

In Proverbs it says the following about those who close their ears to another person’s pain, illness, and need in general:

“Whoever closes his ears so as not to hear the sick will himself call out, and there will be no one to hear him.” He too will suffer one day, it says, but no one will be found to listen to him, because he closed his ears to the pain and need of another.

And concerning the other point I was making: when someone whom we regard as beneath us is healthy, we expect him to attend upon us;

When he is healthy, he must be attentive to us; but when he falls ill, we are indifferent and treat him like our cat or dog. Saint Justin the Philosopher says the following: “Many of the rich seek an abundance of service from their servants and demand it without any sense of shame.”

That is, the strong shamelessly demand to be served by the weak. Yet when those poor people who had served and assisted them fall ill, the rich show them no care at all.

They offer no attentive service to those who had served them.

He therefore gives Christ as an example. At first, Christ was not born as a man; He was not man, but became man. By nature He is God, the Only-Begotten Son. Yet for our sake, for the sake of mankind, He condescended to become man. He humbled Himself, he says, and became man, becoming like us, though of course without sin, as Paul says in the Epistle to the Hebrews.

See, then: although you are a man, you neglect those of your own kind, your fellow human beings. He was God and became man in order to help you. So you, who are a man, what ought you to do for one of your own kind—for another human being, your equal? You neglect to show compassion toward someone who shares your own human nature. Yet when an irrational animal is in distress, you attend to its needs. If something happens to your dog, you care for it because you need it to serve you and guard you.

But when a rational creature—a human being, your own servant, one of your fellow men—falls ill, you overlook him and do not care for him, even though he is a rational being. And these things are true. They arise from the lament of that man who said, “I have no man.”

And He who came for the paralyzed man—and for paralyzed humanity—to offer His service, immediately placed Himself at the man’s service and said to him, as you know, “Take up your bed and walk.”

It is also significant that He went specifically to this man. There was a great multitude there, yet He went to him. It took thirty-eight whole years for the man to reach the proper spiritual state, so that he could receive the miracle without falling away after it.

For Christ does nothing thoughtlessly. He neither compromises Himself nor allows anyone to pressure Him into doing harm. He always provides for what is truly beneficial to the human person. Why did He not go to someone else? Because this man had matured.

He had become a fitting vessel for receiving the miracle. The proper preparation is also necessary: humility and faith, which form the vessel into which the miracle enters. And if many do not receive a miracle, it is because they have not prepared the fitting and proper vessel in which to receive it.

In any event, as the Evangelist goes on to tell us about this man: “And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.”

Christ did not heal him little by little, so that he first began to feel something, then the numbness gradually left his hands, then he moved one leg a little today and the other a little tomorrow. He was healed instantly, with enough strength to lift the bed that had carried him for thirty-eight whole years.

I confess that I do not know—perhaps you are stronger than I am. But I admit that if I were told to lift a bed, certainly not some lightweight camp bed, I would not be able to lift it. Yet this man suddenly found the strength to lift his bed before everyone and depart.

How was this possible? This is God; this is the omnipotence of God. And I would like certain theologians to hear or learn this, because when they read in Genesis that God spoke and it came to pass—that in one day He divided, and in one day He made—they say the following.

“Oh, impossible, impossible! These must be periods of time, vast periods of time. It could not have happened in one day. A north wind would have to blow, and the waters would have to dry up. How could God do these things?” That is their attitude. They are the ones who say, “God willing and weather permitting.” Very well, God may will it, but the weather must blow as well! And if the weather does not blow, what can God do about it? That is their thinking.

That is how it is. So did He have to heal this man in two stages as well? He gets him started today, and tomorrow he comes back to get his arms moving, while the man languishes? No—the paralytic, after thirty-eight years, immediately takes up his bed and walks.

The Annunciation, the Annunciation,

the Annunciation. The eyes that supposedly see best are the envious ones.

Envious eyes follow a curved path. They can see what is happening in America right now. Someone goes over there and says, “No, what are we supposed to say now?” What I am telling him is what we are saying now. He can see all the way over there. And what conclusions they draw! It is a serious matter.

Envy presents the day as night and the night as day. It presents the honorable deeds of honorable people as dishonorable, and the dishonorable deeds of dishonorable people as honorable. Envy is a terrible thing. It was especially strong among the scribes and Pharisees in their opposition to Christ. So great was their envy that these people were blinded. Instead of seeing and marveling—“What is this that we are witnessing today?”—they seize the man as though he were guilty. “Why are you carrying your bed today, on the Sabbath?” “It was not my doing. The One who made me well commanded me, and in obeying His command, I pay no heed to what you may say.”

And we, for our part, keep confessing the One we said at our baptism that we would obey, and we keep saying what the man healed in today's Gospel said: «The One who made me well, He is the one who gave me this command, to pick it up.»

I took it up myself.” He who made us well through Baptism and enrolled us in the Kingdom of Heaven has also given us certain commandments. Do we keep them, or are we afraid of the world? Do we make the sign of the Cross beneath our jackets, where no one can see it, or do we not make it at all?

On this point too we are caught out as inconsistent. That man had the courage. He had never read anything, he had never heard any sermons — lying there, that was simply not possible for him. For thirty-eight years he lived the life of his sickness. He lay there paralysed in the middle of the malice and the indifference and the hardness of the world; he had heard nothing.

Nevertheless, he now senses within himself that something supernatural has happened here. This cannot be an ordinary man. So he obeys Him, paying no attention to the Jews, the scribes, or the Pharisees.

Then the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” He answered them, “The One who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’” What do you think? These men followed Christ step by step. Did they really fail to understand what this mystery was and who had performed it?

They knew. It was malice—

Very well. So they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” In other words, who is this man who dared to tell you today to take up your bed and walk? Who is he? Who is he? But the man who had been healed did not know who He was. He could not say whether it was this man or that man. He did not know. Why? For one reason—one that we have not yet discussed.

something, of course, that we ourselves have never shown! And listen: “For Jesus had withdrawn, since there was a crowd in that place.” Christ did the good deed and departed without anyone seeing Him, without leaving His name, and without saying anything about Himself. The man did not know who He was; he had lost sight of Him. So when we do good, even our other hand should not know about it.

But as for us, if no one is going to hear about it, we do not do it.

Mr. Panagopoulos, here you are. I have a suit, but I want it to be put to good use. You will not give it away unless it is put to good use? Then leave it; its owner can keep it in the space it is already taking up.

Do you understand? That is not the point. The Lord does not look merely at what a person does; He looks at how he does it.

Have we ever read in the lives of the Saints how they conducted themselves? Read the Sayings of the Desert Fathers. Many times Christ Himself appeared as a beggar, to test us and expose our wickedness, our lack of mercy, and that of others as well.

Read about Saint John the Almsgiver — there are great lessons there on this very subject. So Christ went away. But us — whatever we do, we'd want... He never even wrote us a letter, never even said one thank you. And if he eats a mouthful of bread, I'm the one who gave it to him; and the coat on his back, I'm the one who put it there.

“Do you know what we have done for this man? Do you know what we have done for this child?” Someone will naturally ask, “Should we not receive some thanks?” If you ask me, I will answer: no, you should not. You should hear nothing—not even a thank-you—because then you will understand that you did not do it merely for that individual, but for Christ in the person of that individual, and that you were duty-bound to do it.

We do not applaud an orange tree for producing oranges. If it produces none, we shall put it in the fireplace. Its task is to produce oranges. And yet those who have not been deeply cultivated spiritually expect to be thanked.

Those who have been deeply cultivated neither expect thanks nor give thanks.

I have spoken to you about this before. Thankfulness! I have in mind a man whom I knew for many years at the sanatorium. Several of us brethren used to take up a small collection and support him. If I tell you that for ten years we never received a single thank-you, I mean not once. Yet we did not stop giving him what we gave, as brethren fulfilling our duty, though we never received a word of thanks.

Only recently, when we went once again to offer our small contribution on the feast of the Ascension, he said, “Thank you very much. From now on, I do not want anything, because my pension has increased from 300 to 800, and I am no longer in need.”

Where can you find such a soul? You bring Heaven down to earth—truly, you bring Heaven down to earth. But when a person says, “May my hand be cut off if I ever give again,” that reveals what is really happening: he is not acting for Christ and for His glory, but for his own account.

How many times did Saint John the Merciful sell at the marketplace the things people sent him? Others would find them there, buy them back, and send them to him again; and once again he would sell them. He would say, “Let us see who grows tired first. You keep sending them, and I will keep selling them.”

He would take them and give them to others.

This is what the saying means: “Do good and cast it into the sea.” And when God casts His nets to separate the good from the bad, He will find the good that you have done as well. For when we want others to flatter our ego and make much of our gestures and such things, we have fallen on the right-hand side—through what appears to be good—and we cannot stand firm.

In any case, the man had lost sight of Christ. He had not seen Him clearly and did not know who He was.

That is how people act when they want to guard themselves from recognition. Something now comes to mind, and I will tell you about it. The person involved may even be here among us; I do not know. Right down here, in front of me, someone once asked me for money to travel abroad.

It was a very serious family matter. She kept speaking to me about it, but I did not have a penny. Still, I thought, “I will call some friends and acquaintances, and speak to some ladies as well. I will tell them what is happening and ask each one to contribute a hundred euros or whatever she can gather—five hundred, a thousand, whatever you wish.”

And while I was speaking, a gentleman came up and placed a piece of paper in my hand.

"Hold on to this, Mr. Panagopoulos," he says to me. I didn't even turn around to look at him. He didn't tell me who he was or what he was, and I didn't know the man at all. And since I had arranged with this soul to come and meet me the next day, so that I could see what I might have been able to do on my part within an hour — when I got home, I open the paper up and find ten thousand drachmas inside.

The people involved were asking for 6,000 drachmas to travel as far as the border.

So I told him, “Come by and take the six thousand drachmas.” “Thank you,” and so on. “Go now; I want nothing from you. Will He not send more? He will send more.” I do not know the man who gave the money. He may even be among us tonight, but I do not know him.

He never asked me, “What did you do with it?” or “How did you use it?” Nothing at all. At that very moment, right here in front of me where I am pointing, he placed ten thousand drachmas in my hand, wrapped in a piece of paper.

These are God's anonymous people. He slipped away, it says; no one saw him.

But afterwards, he says, they did meet. He goes on to tell us — and you will have read this — that the two of them met somewhere. Where do you suppose? At the tavern? No. At the stadium? At the cinema? Sitting in front of a neighbor's television? No. Listen to where they met: «After this, Jesus found him in the temple.»

The temple. What was Christ doing in the temple? “That is my house.” The first one I meet when I come to church is not the priest, and not the chanter, and not the lady from the parish charity group who last year made a loud scene at the collection plate so that everyone there would notice her. No! It is the Lord of the temple, it is Christ; He is the first one there in the temple, and it is with Him that you have to settle accounts, and with Him in mind that you must weigh how you will enter the church. Because you came to the church; you declared yourself worthy. The one you are going to meet there is Him. It is not your relatives, and it is not the company at a wedding, where you go to show off your clothes. It is not. It is Christ first. After these things, it says, Jesus finds him in the temple, and said to him: “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you.”

“Lest something worse happen to you.” You know, doctors say the same thing: “Be careful not to relapse.” If you relapse, the condition may become far worse and nothing may be able to stop it. “Lest something worse happen to you.”

And that is where this man came to know Christ, and once again he had the boldness to act: «The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.» Let us not be ashamed to confess Christ today. This man did it knowing full well what it would mean for him — you understand: excommunication, being cut off, being put out of the synagogue. No work, no wife, no home, nothing at all.

And yet, today we are the ones who have buried Christ. We don't even have the courage to speak about Christ. Not to deliver some little speech, of course, but to speak with faith. “Sir, today is such and such a day. Sir, what you're doing isn't right.”

“My dear girl, what you are wearing is not proper.” “My dear sir, this refusal to have children is not right.” “Sir, this other thing you are failing to do is not right.” We must confess what we are called to confess. If we do not confess it, what will we confess? If those who first received Christianity had not confessed it to others, would we now be worshiping the true God? Or would we have invented another five hundred gods and sent them all up to Olympus for their summer holiday? They would have turned the twelve gods into five hundred.

But because they confessed the faith, we possess what we have today. And we too are called to make that same confession. From all this, then, you see that both moral teaching and dogmatic teaching are revealed. Christ is shown to be God, and the duties we human beings have toward our fellow human beings are also made clear.

He came down and became man; can I then remain indifferent to another human being? So we too, for His sake, for our own salvation, and in service of our neighbor and his salvation, must conduct ourselves accordingly.

May our risen Lord have mercy on us and bless us for this purpose. Amen.

Γιατί, λοιπόν, να μην πιστέψω και αυτούς οι οποίοι ήσαν εκεί και οι οποίοι ομολογούν και με το αίμα τους ακόμη ότι πράγματι ο Χριστός ανέστη;

Είχαμε τις δυσκολίες μας, ποιος θα μας μεταφέρει τον ογκόλιθον που είναι εκεί πέρα;

Είσελθε λοιπόν, λέγει, παρακάλεσον, διόρθωσον την αθυμίαν, ευθυμότερον ποίησε και καρτερικότερον. Ποιήσε Χριστός ποιήσε που λέει θέλει να υποφέρει ο Χριστός εσταυρός. Αναμάρτητος είσαι; Γιατί δεν κάνεις υπομονή;

Το πήρα μόνος μου». Αυτός που μας έκαμε καλά, λοιπόν, διά του βαπτίσματος εμάς και μας έγραψε στη Βασιλεία των Ουρανών, μας έχει δώσει και ορισμένες εντολές. Εμείς τις πράττουμε ή φοβούμεθα τον κόσμο και το σταυρό μας θα σηκώσουμε και τον κάνουμε κάτω από το σακάκι μας ή δεν τον κάνουμε καθόλου;

Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι τῷ τεθεραπευμένῳ· Σάββατόν ἐστιν· οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἆραι τὸν κράβαττον. Απεκρίφη αυτός Ὁ ποιήσας με ὑγιῆ, ἐκεῖνός μοι εἶπεν· ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει. Έχετε γνώμη τώρα; Αυτοί οι οποίοι παρακολουθούσαν βήμα προς βήμα τον Χριστό, δεν αντελήφθησαν ποιο το μυστήριο είναι αυτό και ποιος το έκανε;
