Summary
Elder Ephraim explains why God permits temptations in the monastic life: God sends bitter remedies to heal the soul and make it worthy to pass the toll-houses. As the Protomartyr Stephen beheld the Son of God only while being stoned, glory comes through the furnace of trial. God permits even the demon of fornication so the monk is proven and crowned; according to Isaac the Syrian, God wants not mindless, untested oxen but souls made wise through war against the demon, the world, and the self. Yielding a single thought lets a passion grow from an ant into a lion, so pride, envy, judgment, and anger must be resisted at once. When one humbles himself the delusion departs, as the deacon and the monk show; he recounts conquering anger, lust, and envy through prayer and tears, until a spiritual fragrance of purity arose.

A homily on temptations, given at the Holy Monastery of Philotheou.
And God, who examines hearts and reins, knows very well what each of us hides in the depths of his heart. In terms of his passion, in terms of his gifts and his intentions, He intervenes accordingly, usually with bitter remedies, and many times with a real crucifixion,
in order to raise us up in soul, to make us healthy in soul and worthy to pass the toll-houses and to reach the throne of Grace.
Among the other Saints and Martyrs we have the Protomartyr Stephen, the Archdeacon. He was one of the seven, chosen and elected by the Holy Apostles to serve the Church, to serve the Church. He was the good Archdeacon. When did this Deacon of Christ see the Son of
God standing at the right hand of the Father? When did he see Him? When was he counted worthy of this great grace? Only then, when the heavy stones, the stoning by the evil men, by those who hate our Christ, when these stones were breaking his ribs, his face,
all of him, when the blood was flowing down over him, then he began to ascend into the heavens.
the Christian. From the furnace to comfort; comfort he does not accept. This is why the good God, who as a good Father, in order to give true adoption as sons and to make a man a co-heir with Christ and an heir of God, will pass him through the furnace of trial.
One man in one way, another in another. All of them arrive through trial, according to how God will judge to send that trial.
God stirs up a war, chiefly against us monks. Youth begins. He brings the monk into the war of the flesh. He permits the demon of fornication to wage war, even though outside his life may have seemed pure, because he had not come up against sin and it was a calm, ordinary condition. God knew that outside, if He permitted this demon,
the man would not manage to come through it. So He enlightens him, He gives him the prevenient grace, He gives him strength, He gives him the will, He draws him, and the man renounces the world. So he comes here, he enters the field of battle, and there God unleashes the demon. It happens again and again, and the monk comes complaining and says, 'I did not have this war before, and how is it that I have it here, this other war, ' and he says, 'I have become worse here than I was.'
'In the world I did not have so much warfare, I did not have so many temptations; here I get entangled, here I have many, so I am not going the right way. That life was better than this one, let us admit it.' No, it is not so. Here God unleashed it, here He let the demon loose to war against you. Why? To bring you forth, to bring you forth as a martyr, a struggler, with the right to receive the crown. This is why it is said that if people knew the monk has many temptations,
they would not become monks. But also, on the other hand, if they knew the glory of monks in the other world, they would all become monks. And He sets the war upon us. But when He permits the demon and puts us into the battle, He does not leave us without grace. He comes and stands beside us invisibly and strengthens the soul, He enlightens the monk, the monk is taught the war,
and so he gives battle. And there he is judged: either he will be crowned or he will be defeated. According to Isaac the Syrian, God does not want oxen for the other life, he says; He does not want oxen, mindless, untested, unwise men, not wise according to worldly wisdom, but wise in the war against the demon, against the world, and against oneself. Man must become a struggler,
and in this threefold war he becomes wise and learns the art of arts and the science of sciences, and, now a graduate of the wisdom that is according to God, he ascends and becomes heir of a kingdom, not an earthly one, not a corruptible one, but an incorruptible kingdom, and he becomes an heir, he becomes a noble and wise man. You see simple men, and in the years of the fathers, men who never finished a single school, Saint Anthony the Great, who did not know how to read,
and yet Saint Anthony the Great was gifted, a spiritual man of many degrees, and he took first place among the ascetics because he became wise. But in order to become graduates of God, we must fight various battles, many subjects, just as children at school have many subjects, this one and that one and the other, mathematics and chemistry, so that in all of them they give the battle of the examinations. and then they will pass them all.
In the same way we too take examinations, each of us in how he will earn the degree and the good grade. The logismoi, the intrusive thoughts, come. We monks do not want worldly philosophies, we do not want many teachings. What do we monks want? We want to know the war we have to wage, how we will fight the logismoi, the fantasy, the images, and how to keep the Holy Gospel as best we can.
In the war of the flesh we have learned that we have the natural condition. There is the natural war; it is sown within our nature, in blood and flesh, the passion. It's a natural need, just as there's the need for food, the need for sleep, the need to be clothed. The flesh has these needs. And alongside this it also has the natural provision for the increase of the human race, the way all the animals go about it. 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth,
' and so on, says the Scripture. So here too we have this warfare, the natural one: nature rises up and demands what belongs to it, its own satisfaction; and the demon comes in from the other side and hardens the whole thing, and he steps in and takes the helm and steers the situation. Steers what? He steers the thoughts and the imagination; he brings us images, brings us one thing after another, pushes the situation to its limit, and agitates us. What must we do here?
Christ teaches us. The fathers teach us, it says: out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, the logismoi, the Gospel says this. Out of the heart, it says, all these things spring up. And what has to happen now? The heart must be cleansed. How is it cleansed? It is full of roots, thorny roots. Thorny roots,
and whoever wants to break these thorny roots bleeds and suffers pain. So unless he bleeds and suffers, the thorny roots remain; but by human effort, with the help of grace, with the teaching of the fathers and so on, a person will break them one by one. Like a surgeon, he comes with the forceps and pulls them out one by one, and when he uproots them, the heart turns to blood and pain. And the one who shows patient endurance under
God's operation will one day become healthy. His heart will no longer desire these things, the disordered and ugly things. But at that moment he will react against the pain, against the uprooting of these roots, and he will not show the patient endurance needed to hold still there. Under the surgeon's operation he will remain subject to the passions. For who can boast, according to the fathers, that he has kept his heart undefiled?
No one. Even Saint Basil the Great, as he puts it: 'I have not known a woman, and yet I am not a virgin.' I do indeed have the warfare of the imagination, the nocturnal warfare, the dreams, and so on. And I tell you, all of this is a false sensation in the heart. So the heart is not virginal, even if I myself never knew what the other sex is.
And struggling manfully against the evil imaginations, against the filthy fantasies that bring us a thousand and one things, we must fight against them, to snuff out the fantasies that give birth to the filthy logismoi; and on the other hand, with fasting and self-control as far as we are able, with our rule of prayer, and with toil and labor at our work and toward our brother. For one thing, we show our resolve before God that we want to be cleansed, to be purified, and to become holy. Not because these efforts will by themselves bring about holiness, but because we are contributing to the work of our cleansing together with God.
We are fellow workers with God. We work together with God in the cleansing of our heart.
So then, we have the dreams. So the devil comes in from there to do his work on us. He brings us fantasies while we sleep, so that when we wake, what he stirred up in our sleep will come back to our memory, to set off our day of warfare. What must we do here? We must dismiss the case of the dream as nothing, taking care not to keep remembering them.
Otherwise they influence us and conquer us, and afterward they gain strength, and each time they come as the victor from the previous time, and the time before that, and the one before that. And it says to us: here I am; now don't even speak about this, I'll put you down. Like a little child who wrestles once, twice, three, five times, and the moment he sees his opponent he goes weak. He can't stand up to him, because the defeats he suffered before have crushed his morale. And so he can't face it. As the Abba says,
when something like this happens the soul is immediately paralyzed by the re-imaging of the evil fantasy. It surrenders, he tells us. And then it thinks up still other things. That is why we need to be fully armed, to be shrewd and clever, to be watchmen, to be lookouts, so that at the very first image of them we strike them down. One, two, three, five, ten times,
and the enemy will begin to suffer defeat whenever he comes again to mount his opposition and his warfare. A certain elder used to cast out many demons, even chief demons, high-ranking officer-demons, from people, and with great ease. His disciple asks him, in bewilderment: 'Elder, why is it that the demons fear you and flee?' 'My child, I have done nothing noteworthy; this happens by the grace of God. But what I can say is this: all these years we have been fighting in the imagination, against evil logismoi,
against evil fantasies, yet by the grace of God the imagination never once defeated me. Never did the imagination conquer me; I gave neither my assent nor even entertained the coupling of the thought. And because I was never defeated, that is why the demons now depart at once and are driven out of people.' So then, he came out first in everything; he was top of his class in all of it, and this now bears on the matter before us.
And it is the same with the next thing. Envy will war against us, jealousy will war against us, pride will war against us, egoism, judging others, idle talk, and the rest. Look, what is needed here is watchfulness, nepsis. The thought tells me to take up this grievance, to say something to him, to blow off steam. I'd like to blow off steam, but I'll be the one who bursts, because once I start and speak I'll say something to him that I shouldn't, and I'll hear from him something I shouldn't hear, and so I'll take the harm inside. And that is not blowing off steam, it is bursting;
that is, I'm the one who ends up suffering for it,
The Jesus Prayer. Whereas if he had gone and spoken to him and so on, what would have happened? It would have been a defeat. Today this defeat, tomorrow another, and another, and the person becomes enslaved to the passions on that side. And you suffer the other thing as well, just as the proud arrive at the thought, "I am something." I have this grace, that I know what such a thought is; and if I do not react, I will say, "What am I?
Dust and clay." That is my worth, that is my honor. And what becomes of the clay, of the dust that everyone treads on, both animals and men? That is what you are, so be quiet. What do you have that you did not receive? And if you received it, why do you boast as though you did not? Whatever you have, you have it from God. And now you boast that you have it from your God and that you are something, when you are nothing.
Has experience not proved it, then and there, and there, and there, that you stumbled? And you suffered so many things, and now you rise up because once, by God's grace, you thought of something good and spoke a word or two, or you took up some charitable work, some ministry, and gave the tired a little rest, and you reckon this to be something. But what did Christ do for you? God came down from the heavens to the earth and became man. He emptied himself and came down and was born of a woman and became man,
and he humbled himself, and he endured the reproach of men, the mockery of men. He asks the little child, he says, who crucified Christ, was it the Jews? And the little one answers. No, not the Jews. Then who did it, elder? Envy, he says, and malice. Envy and malice crucified Christ. For Christ the Lord worked miracles, and all the world ran to him, and the Jews, the Scribes and the Pharisees said, what is happening here with this man?
This man is drawing everyone to himself; we will get rid of him from our midst. And we too were amazed to see the other side, that one of the disciples, one of the twelve disciples, should come to this. He became the betrayer of his teacher; it was not that he did not hear his teacher's teaching, he did hear it. He had the spirit of the love of money, and he did not fight it, or he fought it badly, until he became the betrayer. The love of money took hold of him, and God knew his passion. If it had been us, we would have said, we have now fed his love of money, and that is why it turned out this way.
That is human judgment; but what did God do? He gave him the wallet, the purse, the treasury, the money-box, which he kept from the offerings of the pious women and the rest, who helped in the work of feeding the Apostles. The women ministered and supported the cause, and God gave him the treasury and said, you keep watch over it, and so on. So that he might not say, I was forced into stealing because my teacher did not provide for me, I was penniless and so on, and that is why I fell into this sickness. Here, take it and have it,
so that you cannot say you did not have it and that this is why you became a thief. Yet behold, this one is evil too, my child; he does not come to see what he has, but at once he says, what will you give me to hand him over to you? And he took the pieces of silver from them and made the arrangement. So the yielding took place and he completed the betrayal. And we too hand our soul over to the devil when we do not resist evil. We monks here have nothing else to do but to fight against the deep passion, and this is why the monks who make progress are crowned and become great, and we have millions of ascetics and monks and the rest. And the Fathers.
As we said from the beginning, three times over you must reflect on this; but they were trained at the feet of the elders in how to fight one passion at a time. Father, he says, what shall I do, how shall I fight? Many passions unfold here and there and everywhere, and I have lost my bearings. No, my child, not like that. You do not take on all the passions at once. Take one at a time. Today this one is warring against you, so strike it. And if this one is not warring against you, strike the other.
And little by little, striking and striking and striking, slowly the passions are subdued, and you yourself will be raised up spiritually. We people of today face the very same warfare, because they are the very same demons, and they have not changed. So they war against us too. They warred against the Fathers of old as well. But those were the valiant ones. Were they born great? We are the ones who fall, when the thought comes against our brother and we cannot resist it,
but we sit and accept it, because he spoke a word to me, because he looked at me askance, because he did not do me a favor. We weave and weave the thoughts, and then what happens? We go from bad to worse, and we lose our love, and we lose God. The devil says, you will find your chances. He plays the fool with you now, and time passes and every ugly thing settles inside. It will grow and grow and grow, and now, look, nothing came of saying that and thinking that and so on.
And from a little ant it will become a little lion. Then it will become a full-grown lion, and when he finally realizes that it has taken him over, led him around and wrapped him up completely, and he rises up to strike back at it, he will run straight into the strength of the lion. And I say to him, you have taken on a lion to fight; be careful it does not crush your bones. So it is now as well. What is it, as Saint Basil says, for me to speak one word, or to entertain one thought?
Yes, yes, but the one thought will bring the next, and one thought leads to another, and one yielding leads to another, and little by little the person becomes enslaved to the passions. This is why we too fight against the same demons. But the difference is that we yield, and I am the first among them. We yield. A suspicion comes to us about our brother and we believe it. And so they plant it in us. But where did so-and-so say it, where did he say it, and so on, yes. From mouth to mouth and from thought to thought it travels far.
I forgot that there is also a spirit of suspicion, and I gladly received it, when things are not so at all. We examined this here, as we see also in the case of the deacon and the senior monk. I have told it before and it has been read aloud in the Gerontikon. There were two of them in a monastery, and perhaps they even served the Liturgy together; one was a deacon, and one was a senior monk. And one day the monk saw the deacon looking gloomy, not himself as he had been the day before and the day before that, cheerful, speaking kindly and so on.
He says, deacon, why are you like this, did I do something to you? Yes, he says, you did such a thing and you scandalized me. "I didn't do it," says the deacon, "whatever it was you think I did." He stops and reflects. Where did the deacon come up with this, when he hadn't done it at all? His conscience bore witness in his struggle that he had never done such a thing. So the deacon goes to the spiritual father. "Please," he says, "have mercy."
And the father tells him: look at yourself. I haven't done it, and I would never lie to you, but you cannot take the whole thing on the deacon alone. Conquer evil with good, the other man's pride with your own humility, and begin by putting the question to yourself. And the deacon says within himself, stung by what he had seen: "Wait now. You have committed your faults out in the world and you want to forget them. Perhaps you did this too and simply don't remember, just as you have done so many other things and forgotten them. You forgot this one as well, you received forgiveness, you did it."
The matter is settled, he tells himself, so why speak in circles? "You received forgiveness from the deacon; yes, you did it." And that thought pressed down hard: you did it. So he bows himself down, goes and falls before the holy father, and says: "My deacon, you know, I must have done it. I have forgotten, I have forgotten it. You yourself saw as much. Forgive me, deacon; let us forgive one another." "No, no, no," says the other, "I was illumined from above and given to understand that you did not do it.
My brother, you did not do it. I, I, I was the one deceived." There it is: the moment one humbled himself, the delusion left the other as well. Until that moment both were holding onto their own position. This is the whole art of it, and it deserves real study; we should sit down and read how it is done. But we, the men of today, because our egoism is untouched, because we have never once let it be broken even a little, the moment something merely shows itself we take offense at our brother: why did he say that to me, and who is he anyway, and I am the greater one.
Even when I know full well I am the lesser, still I think he had no right to insult me. Our own mind puts a thousand and two such things into us. And after that we cannot manage. We grow touchy and vulnerable, and at the very first sign we all begin to fret and lament, saying, oh, we are not doing well, oh, we have no love, oh, we have no brotherly love, we are barely two souls together and where will we end up. And with everything that lies before us,
we need medicines, and we have a whole pharmacy of them. Eat, my poor ones, take them, and you will be made well. But because one medicine is bitter, and another sour, and another is a scalpel that cuts, and another one hurts, we hold back. You will not get well that way, my child. Consider what the fathers say. Look at our elders, our grandfathers in the faith; look at my own elder, and what the poor man endured for my sake. When he was living in the cave, a certain monk lost his patience and threw the plate of food straight in his face,
because, who knows, perhaps it had not agreed with him and left his head aching, and he could not bear it there in the solitude of the cave. But the elder kept his patience; he simply took it, plate and all. He bowed his head down low, said, "Bless, Father, " and set it aside; and it is this man who is the victor. Another day, over in Katounakia, something else happened. He was with Elder Joseph the Hesychast there, and nearby lived a sick monk,
very hot-tempered and quick to take offense. I don't know just what had occurred over some small matter, but the man began screaming at Elder Ephraim, the poor soul, and the Lord helped Elder Ephraim through it: "You wretched old man, you are this, you are that." And the Elder, once again, in his usual way, seeing his own elder Joseph tormented by this man, felt the egoism and the anger flare up inside him, and thought, this time it will not spare me; it is rising from within. So great was the anger swelling up in him that he had to get out at once.
What did he do? He said, that is enough, and to keep the matter from breaking out he went off. "I go and throw myself down," he says, "inside the church, and I begin to cry out from under the weight of the anger. I have anger in me now, he told me, and I had gone out with it, and the thought would not leave me." He fell to the ground and cried aloud: "Help me, my Christ, help me now. Help me, Lord Jesus Christ, save me, save me, help me." And he began to weep: "Help me, my God, help me, change my thought and my heart." And he wept, and the tears fell until he was wetting the floor beneath him.
And once he had watered the floor beneath him with his tears, there, the anger was calmed within him. He came out and spoke in a sweet and gentle way: "Grandfather, " he said, "why do you torment the Elder like this?" For here is the heart of it: we did not come here to inherit fields and olive trees and rocks. We came for the sake of our soul; we came for love. If we lose love, we have lost God. All these other things we will leave behind, but love we will carry with us.
Once I would have struck at the man himself, and the demons of my anger would have come circling back again. But this time I found myself thrown down on the ground, and I stood my ground and prayed and choked the anger within me, and its stirrings went out of me. See how it goes: the same with this passion and with that one. What does the passion want? It wants to be confronted; then it will retreat. One way or another, it will give way. It wants you to come to the tight place,
to the point of hard pressure, and not to yield. Stand firm there, and your passion will retreat. And why will it retreat? Because the one who fights it has, as it were, second place; he has a certain power and a certain commission from God to fight alongside him. The moment that limit which God has set is used up, the passion retreats before God himself. And then what happens? You are crowned. You have won the victory.
I too was fighting: in one passion the war, and in another, and another, and another. And so the war truly began, and I struggled for several days. It seemed to me that I had no spiritual ascent at all. As far as those battles reached, they reached, and there I came to a stop. Then I began to be like the shore when the sea grows calm and starts to cast up its refuse onto the sand. One thing washing up here, another there,
I was left in a kind of ascetic barrenness; I had nothing at all. It showed itself there, and it shows itself now. Ah, that's how it is! For everything, what shall I do? My child, what can you do? Strike the fantasy, strike that thing, and when it comes, at times give it a blow. Take up a stick, even. Ah, that's it! This is the warfare. And I began.
Warfare, warfare, it grew hard. Take this one, take the other one too. And when I went to lie down, or when it came at me in my sleep and I saw it under the pillow and struck it down, then a fragrance would rise up out of the bedcovers. A spiritual fragrance. And what was it? It was the purity that came from the warfare I had resisted. The fragrance would come and fill my soul.
And I say, look how beautiful the warfare is. Fighting even in my sleep. Real sleep, true sleep.
So it is, just as sometimes it comes from much prayer, sitting at the prayer, breathing in and breathing out, in and out, for one hour, two, three, four hours, in and out; and out of that breathing a fragrance was born, and the whole place was filled with fragrance. I would go in to the elder, warmed by the prayer in my thought, and everything gave off fragrance, even my laughter and my clothes; all of it was made fragrant by the elder's prayer, as he used to say. The fragrance of Christ, he says, is the name of Christ, and the name of God perfumes us.
But this taskmaster, the demon, comes and takes our prayer away and leaves us dry. When he tells you, I know you have no obstacle in you: something rotten and soft and decayed has nothing to give; but as long as a thing is fresh, it gives off fragrance. So sleep was fought, and lust was fought, and anger; and then came envy and jealousy: why should my brother go further than I, why should he say the prayer better than I?
Why don't you rejoice? Why are you embittered? Because your heart is not pure, and so love is missing. So you turn to prayer: My Christ, give me love, give me love for my brother. Lord Jesus Christ, help my brother. Lord Jesus Christ, give him greater progress. Lord Jesus Christ, give him
greater progress. No, grant to my brother a love, and lay it upon my heart, a love for my brother who is going forward. At that moment I do not know what to say; I said everything, and the words I would have said were of no use, all of it, the whole of it.
That is why God had given me penthos, mourning for sin. Out of all that grace and out of the prayer, God gave a penthos, and there was not a day or a night when my eyes did not run with tears. And I remember, ungrateful as I was, a letter would come, the elder would give it to me, and the passions would flare up. I saw the tears of the elder, you see; again he would say, and you too, read it. He says, write two words. And I would say them. Afterward, I say, we do not wash ourselves. Here we wash ourselves with our tears.
We weep and wash our own face. Why did all this happen? Because there was forcing, the holy violence we do to ourselves. That is the whole discipline. But when there is no such forcing, none of this ever comes about. And I want to say that we monks, our task is to learn this discipline of the strugglers, the passions and the demons. But we will never acquire it, whatever else we learn; we may study the earth, we may come to know the demons, we may become great, but it is worth nothing unless we become so within ourselves,
standing against the passions.
And little by little I see improvements in myself, and our elders tell us: work your youth so that you may rest in your old age. What does this mean? My child, he says, now that you are young, fight the passions, fight the thought, fight the imagination, labor in your obedience, toil, sweat, keep vigil; and all these labors, this whole struggle, is work. These are the years the hand must work. When the years pass and you tell the body to fight and it no
longer has the strength to struggle with this thing and that, you will already have worked through the years God appointed you to labor, and at once he will grant you a pension. And according to your craft, according to your position, so will be the pension you receive. And what is this pension? It is the grace of God, he says. Look, ask me now, and I will answer you. Within myself, my child, I feel Paradise. The prayer runs like a clock.
As for passion, I see none. Nothing stirs. The warfare does not press me, I have no logismoi, no uprisings within. None of this is some achievement of today; it is the fruit of that youth, he says. Then everything was brought to birth. Now comes the reward. A younger monk saw much warfare and begged God. My God, lighten me from this warfare that burns me, that burns and burns. God heard his prayer, and he felt the freedom.
And once he went to a great, experienced elder, a man still young who had passed through a sea of warfare, and he says to him: Elder, I have been lifted above the passions. What did he mean by this? Look, he says, I have found rest; that no longer fights me, this no longer fights me. The elder looked at him, fixing him with a sharp, piercing eye, and says to him: from now on, is it? From now, a pension, a reduced one; wrong, he tells him, you are mistaken.
Come now, he says, first you begged God on your own to be shown this need. Now go and gather the fathers too. Tell them to pray for me. Ask God to bring the warfare back, the passions God took away, so that you may keep fighting and rise up spiritually, and receive a great pension the day after tomorrow. Not a pension now. Do you see what this dear little father is telling us? No, rest does us no good yet.
While we still have our youth, we need the wars, the wrestlings, so that we may strike these passions down; strike them, or else they will stay and it is they who will keep striking us. And God permits, he says, that the prayer we make against the unspeakable warfare not be heard. Why? Because as you fight and call upon the name of God, the name of God sanctifies the nous, the spiritual intellect, and the mouth and the heart through the invocation of that name.
For, having the warfare, you are forced to pray: help me, my Christ; help me, my All-Holy Theotokos; give me strength against this thing that assaults you. That is what brings holiness, yes. So this monk had a great warfare upon him, a whole army of it, and the poor man, from the warfare he bore and from the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts, his own wars, kept cutting the assault off with the Jesus Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, Lord Jesus Christ, while the logismoi and the fantasies came at him one after another. His elder, who was a seasoned and courageous veteran, says to him:
My child, I see you are under warfare, and you keep much fasting. Do you want me to make a prayer for you, so the warfare will leave you? No, no, elder, I beg you, do not pray; leave me be, for I am being edified by it. God bless you, my little child, he tells him; you have found your road. This is the road of God, he says. That is what I wanted to hear from you. For if he had said to me, Yes, yes, let me pray for the warfare to depart, it would have been as though I said to you: Stop, stop, do not spoil your crown. You have set in it only a few little flowers and nothing more. Ah, but that is no crown.
The crown must be made whole, made with all its flowers, every color and kind, this one and that one. A finished, complete thing, that is what it must be. With only a little flower at the edge, only a few struggles, you show what sort of man you are.
It was toil, toil to the full, sweat and hard labor. There we had great labor. Every day we carried loads on our backs, not like now, when we have animals and cars and the rest. Our cars and our animals were these shoulders and these two feet. So, every day there. And the elder, Yiannis, would sprinkle rebukes down on me from above, scolding and more, and at night hardship and hard treatment. And there was I, do not touch me, a broken, useless man; I too, poor wretch, thought I might just barely manage to live.
The elder said, so as to test me, the little one: Come here, my child; you know, this warfare you have, you will not get through it.
Unless I fight it through, I will not turn back, at least. The moment I said that, it was settled. A little later he says to me: My child, get ready, we are going to make you a monk. He had set a little test inside there to try me out. And as soon as he heard that answer and that resolve of the soul that was in my heart, he says to me: You have chosen the strong things, the narrow, the lowly, the unpaid; for God is against the powerful and the wise of this world, and, and, and.
Keep silence, keep silence, he would say, and one single prayer, one prayer only, the Jesus Prayer. The elder above me censing me continually, continually supporting me. And he says to me: I will keep watch, and you will melt away little by little; look, he says, what warfare you have. And to give me a little courage, he says: it seems God is foretelling this for you. What, elder, for me? I cannot even lift my feet; I go about on my knees. Either He will soon send you His great grace, he says, or, as sure as I send you now,
you will one day speak in the midst of the church, and our elder will see it. Elder, I was thinking of death continually, and I would say, let me leave this hut for heaven above. I was in a wretched bodily state, a heaviness in my chest and in my lungs and all that. Well, I say, I too am finished. The elder says to me: Come, my child, let me make you a monk and send you to the other world; you are not Jesus. You can lift your feet, he says. And he began to prepare me for the other world.
And he started to tell me about Ioannikios, who died as a young monk, and who took up the prayer again with fervor, and as soon as he gained the Jesus Prayer, the prayer of the Lord Jesus, he fell ill with consumption, and God took him and carried him to Paradise. And about another young monk, twenty-two years old, who held up the old man who was falling, with one hand caught him and kept him from going down. And there was I, ready to be blown over by a breath and to tumble down the slope.
And those of you who came here with letters and studies and positions, all of you, as soon as the elder set God's warfare loose in you, in the end you left; you were not for anything. And at the last he said, if you too will stay, we will have a continuation. And we stayed, the three or four of us, close beside him. And I want to tell you: just as you have to fight for this, so we too had our own battles in our day, because the warfare and the lessons are the same. The lessons never change, and the demons don't change either. They're seasoned; they play you like a puppet.
If you don't have an elder to guide you and pull you out of the traps, you're finished in this work. But what does the devil do? He says: to get the better of this man, we have to spoil the way he thinks about his elder. 'If I can pull him away from the elder,' he says, 'then easily, easily, with a single gulp I bring him down.' And so it begins: the elder did this, the elder did that, the elder did the other. Once he gets inside you against the elder,
that's it, the monk is done for, it's over. We've seen it in practice. Others came to this too: the moment a man let his tongue loose against his elder, the man was ruined. The demon knows this well. He's very clever and very experienced. He goes straight for what a man leans on, his trainer. If he can knock that down... And let me tell you, I've told you this before too; let me stay on this point a little.
When I was a boy, every now and then the devil would stir things up and they'd go off to watch the boxing. The children would gather, 'come here, this is a match, ' and so on, the way it usually goes. They'd go to watch a little. My mother would say, 'You're not going.' Sometimes the children would sit there laughing. And then I'd come out of the picture-house, and right away my conscience would strike: 'What have you done?
That little coin you wouldn't give for something worthy, you threw it away in there. And how will you face your mother now, how will you say your prayers now?'
The others he used to box against envied this man, because he was a winner, undefeated. Whatever they threw at him, nothing touched him, fearless, he'd fight and win again. 'We'll kill him,' they said, 'he has to be got rid of, ' because they couldn't beat him; so they lay in wait to kill him. He got word of it, slipped out the window of the hotel, thought it over, and went off to another district, and played the simple ordinary man so no one would find out who he was, because those people go hunting for you at once.
So, he won a match. 'Come now,' he thought, and he lived quietly and wanted nothing more. But he needed some tools at the house and went to a workshop to fetch them. And there in the workshop he looked over the workers and saw a young fellow, twenty years old or so, with muscles and all, with every measurement you'd want in a man built for this. 'Ah, this one's good,' he says. 'Let me bring him into my line.' So, quietly, he says to the foreman: 'Things stand thus and so with me; I want you to send someone over, foreman, this young fellow here.'
'Come here, lad, come. I want to give you something extra. Come and do this for me.' 'I'll come,' says the lad, and he came. And while he was working, the man says, 'Roll up your sleeve, lad, can you do the job with your sleeve up?' , just to see him up close, to see his arms, strong and capable. He sees the boy is just right. 'You know what,' he says, 'sit down in this corner. If you train like this and that, there's a lot of money in it, glory,
honors; you'll draw the crowds, and the world will praise you.' The boy swelled up, vainglory got into him, and he started training and turned into a first-rate young fighter. But the man told him plainly: there are rules in boxing, no women, no carousing, no drinking, no staying out at night, no smoking; that is how you'll live, because if you don't keep these, there's a strict law about it. He trained him well, really well, and made him fine, with a tremendous punch; he prepared him, he knew his craft.
Beautifully done; they deceived him. But then, being young, he went off to the café, went to the worse places, as those things go, and gave in. And when he came back home, where he was staying, the trainer looks at him: 'You've been off somewhere, and taken something.' 'Yes, yes.' 'But your face has a shadow on it,' he says. It gives you away. And as they traded a few words, pow,
the trainer lands him a punch and knocks him to the ground. In training there he doesn't break; but he had to give the fight the very next day. And now, without his trainer, the fighter was left cut off on his own. So the hour comes, he goes down to the locker room, and there the champion's heavies come and surround him. They'd learned he had no trainer with him, and they taunted him: 'Ha, ha! You know what you're up against? With the first blow our man takes you! He's a giant, and he has a trainer! Ha, ha, ha!'
They broke his spirit. He began to lose heart.
That's the difference the trainer makes: with his man beside him, he'd put courage into him, 'hit him, you've got him, land the punch,' over and over, right behind him, the trainer, bless him, coaching his pupil. And he stood up high and watched what was going on down below, and the moment he saw the boy losing, losing, losing, with two rounds still to go and the whole thing all but over, he couldn't bear it. The boy's down on the ground. He goes over, and just as the boy is coming to and trying to rise,
the trainer shows himself and puts heart into him, rubs him down and tells him: 'When you go down, don't get up at once; get up on the count of nine, not on three; stay down, lad, and rise on nine, rest a little longer.' So then, the moment the champion came at him like that... As soon as the boy saw him and he got in close, that was it. Rising on the count of nine: one blow, and the man was out. He turned and gave him one more and became the winner; they lifted him on their shoulders and crowned him then and there, at once. Now, this is what I saw as a child. And when I came into the monastic life, I thought: here I am,
about to fight now with a demon and all the rest. If I fall out with my trainer, what then? Who will put heart into me, who will give me his prayers, how am I going to do this? If I fall out with him and start cursing him, what am I doing? 'Take that', I've ruined it, I've spat on him, and now it's fists between us. So how are we going to move against the demons? We won't; I'm not doing that. And so that story became for me an example and an image of how I myself must give battle in this war: by holding fast to the elder.
One time, or as I've told you before in the old days, the elder came down from the villages to do his army service, a simple, God-touched man, and he made the sign of the cross with his little hands. That is what the good man did, and he did it well; I saw it, he did it right from the very start, whereas here, instead of doing it the way we ourselves do. John did these things so as not to give up his prayer rule. And when he tried to make his prostrations, he couldn't, because he was swollen with edema and simply wasn't able to. So he would prop himself up,
and even then the vehemence of his youth showed through; in old age, when he could no longer manage, he would say, 'God knows that this is as far as I can go.'
A little prayer, and self-reproach. 'No, elder, I'll hold my ground here, I'll do it myself.' Say I'm left on my own. I tell you, here I'll give everything. It's a fight. Come now, will you let the elder be taken from me, will you throw me down? We think: what will the child offer the elder, how will I hold my own in the demon's boxing match. That's how it went; I carried that image of the boxing match with me.
While all this was going on, John kept the very same rule, and the thought never once crossed my mind that I had waged war against such a thing, even though I watched it, and one of those struggling was the greater. Not even the idea would form in me that I had done the fighting. How endlessly we must uproot the evil! But if I had let it go and given in to the thought, 'look, John is holding out, John is succeeding, and I'm finished,' if I had stayed fixed on comparing myself to John, I would have gone under.
So, if I don't break out of it. And at the beginning I gave this and that, and the grace of God worked, and the prayers of my elder and of my mother covered me. God had mercy on me and gave me what I needed, and I stood on my feet, and I buried my elder. I served him, counted worthy before God to serve him, to lay him in the grave and cover him with earth and carry the burial through to the very end. And so, when it happens this way, one becomes a true heir, a successor to the grace and the wealth of the Father.
And I want to tell you, my children, that if we do not learn how these wars are waged, we can accomplish nothing at all. We may learn our letters, read, study, keep up with the news, do all sorts of things, and yet we accomplish nothing unless we learn to fight the intrusive thought and the fantasy, and to have love among ourselves, each one sacrificing himself for the other. So, we accomplish nothing. Let me put a case to you, children.
'Ah, you insulted me? You'll see, I'll pay you back.' No, no, no, that is a knife thrust. If it comes to that, it belongs to the world: 'You did this to me, so I'll do the same to you.' I said: no, you must not repay me; I will be the one to give to you. For this is the law of the Gospel. If you don't do it, you have not fulfilled the Gospel rightly. So he got the better of me, and I will hold myself back. I knew I was doing it so that you too might do the same for me.
Didn't you tell me it was the easy way? Come to it yourself, and I will do you no wrong. If that is not good, master, then how? Do not answer evil with evil. He did you wrong, he slandered you, he deprived you, he did not bless you. No, you bless him. You do the good, and whatever he does to you, if you belong to God, what will you do? The account is not yours to settle; you settle only your own. Pay it now, do the Gospel, put it into practice,
and then tomorrow Christ will honor the Gospel in you. The Gospel, that is what will be yours. What did the Lord say? That the word I have spoken, that very word will judge you on the day of judgment. You have heard the Gospel, you know it, but you give in to your desire and you do not do this thing. So, if we keep the Gospel, then you will be able to pass into the freedom of the children of God. This is what my own
elder did as well. 'It is real work,' he says. Above all there was that simple old elder of Arsenios, blessed as he was; he had one small weakness, you know, elder, he was fond of his drink, and now and then he would overdo it. 'Arsenios,' he said, look at Arsenios, and the Lord let him be; you do not know how a person will be saved. You do not know what it takes to be saved.
And here even the demons cry out about Joseph, about Joseph the Hesychast, he says, and he turns to help. 'I too am helping,' he says. And so the old man helps us. Now that he is above, do you imagine he stands idle? Here he never stood idle, and will he stand idle now that he is above, where he sees all things, where he sees what Paradise is and knows its very image, and looks down here at the battle, at what we are doing?
Thank you for coming to me. I come to you and I contemplate the other world, and the demons flee. Father Ephraim, God rest him, departed at some forty-odd years; I was preparing him, telling him, 'I will be going,' I told him, 'father, you have these habits, correct that too, don't do that, it is not permitted, mend it, for if you live in envy while another prays, how will you live?' And the father departed, and I was left behind. And now, do you think they do not help us? The father helps us, and every father who has left here helps us. That is why, children, let us strive; we do not know what is coming.
You have seen how many things happen and how many fathers have delivered us.
And if the hour has not come, how will it come for anyone? It takes the little one. If the General, God, does not send the summons to the little one, the person does not depart. We depart from nothing on our own. So then, our life is in God's hand. It is not a matter of age; it is a matter of God's decision. And because we do not know when the decision will come,
let us keep it ever before us, before our God. We will die. Where will we go? Where will we go? Thank you; I wish you much. And I say, don't let people talk so much. You cannot grasp that within minutes you will depart. He departed. Where are you going? You are going to eternal life.
Willing or not, you will go. To eternal life. Will you come back here? It is finished for good. Will you pass through the tribunal? Yes. You have weighed your deeds. Since these are the last things, why do you not realize them now, so as to prepare yourself to pass over rightly, the way we all must? Right now you take care of your health and of your bodily needs,
watching that you don't fall ill, don't waste away; everyone takes such care. This is what I take care for: the blessedness of the soul that will live as a saint, that the rewards may come tomorrow; and for that you do not care. Well, I do not fret over the body, because it is human weakness, and I am more indifferent about tending it. Our desires drag us along. Rejoice, prepare bravely and lovingly; I am departing, and I want to. Believe it, believe that you are leaving this life; I bid the world farewell. Within seconds your heart stops, and that is the end; you have set out. Ah, you have nothing to take with you when you go.
And in a few short moments, haven't you seen it, the way they carry off the dead? You have buried people; haven't you followed the funerals? What are you, of some other nature? And yet this is the truth, children. We cannot escape it; God will condemn us, and I am the first, because I speak these things and do not put them into practice. We say them, we believe them, and yet we live our foolishness as though we will remain here forever, as though death did not exist, as though what we say were not true. A theory, a philosophy, some philosopher, and so on: things up in the air, we say.
And yet it is true. These things really will happen. Look, we had Father Flevos here among us. He used to sit right here in this place. Is he here now? He is not. He never came back here; he no longer serves the Liturgy, he no longer does anything. And our imagination plays tricks on us: when I speak of him, it feels as if he is still here.
But go and look. Right now, at this very moment, in the grave his body is decaying, while the soul is somewhere else entirely. The very things we used to say, he now says too. And yet he has gone. This is the truth. Can we take this truth in and digest it? If we could, then you would see how our whole life would change. Then you would see what watchfulness we would have, and what holy force we would put into the struggle.
We do not have that holy force, plainly because we do not keep this awareness before us. If we held this thought, it would give us the force, and then we would be ready. This is what we must come to realize. We must take up the holy force, watch over ourselves, and say to ourselves: Night has fallen and I will see the dawn; the dawn has come and I will reach nightfall. At the very least, on this last day, let me do something. Let me say five little prayers! And since I am going to spill out five idle words anyway,
why can I not say five Jesus Prayers instead?
You will not see a thing. I built my little castle, ha, ha, ha, and then the laughter is gone, it is finished anyway. God has taken you, the end. The lie has run its course right here. It is like coming to sleep: you fall asleep and you dream, and in the dream I am building, I am a general, I kill, I lay waste, I build again, I glorify myself, I shout, I preach. See how the enemy carries us off in that dreaming and works a thousand things in us.
And when we wake up, what are you really? Nothing. Then off you go to be judged for the very things you imagined.
So there they were: the wife, the mobile phone, and boom, twenty meters down the slope with the car, badly hurt. They rushed all three of them to the hospital, down there by the harbor. When they set out, perhaps those people were happy, perhaps they were on their way to a wedding, perhaps they were headed to some celebration, and so on. And instead they ended up in the hospital, gravely injured. The end is real; there it is. This is the lie of our life. Man walks about as a liar.
Not that he is telling lies, but that he himself has become a lie. We pride ourselves as being good and strong, when I am nothing at all. Life comes to an end. All at once it is over, my children. This is how we ought to be thinking. Ah, but we cannot get it into our heads. We cannot, we cannot, we cannot. And later, when the hour comes to depart, we still do not grasp it in our minds. You are going to eternal life; you do not come back. It is over, the end.
And yet we never took account of it. May God have mercy on us and forgive us for all we do. May He forgive us, so that we beg God night and day: sinner that I am, forgive me. And wherever we slip and fall in something, let us lift up our eyes and say, God, I have sinned. And then let us run to tell it to our spiritual father, to sift it out finely, to bring it into the open, and not to hold it inside. And even if we should fall into it again, still we will keep clearing it away. Let us not keep saying, let it be, let it be, I have fallen into slavery, and leave it there.
Come now, do not leave these things unattended, do not leave them, because otherwise I do not know what will become of us. And if we do this, then we will pass into the Kingdom of God. And there, where there is rest, the Lord God takes away the whole burden of these impurities, and there is no tribulation, no murder, no sighing, but life unending, eternal life, rest within the light of God, an angel chanting the Thrice-Holy Hymn within the uncreated light of God. There, everything is wholly at peace. Only to know that you have passed into the Kingdom of God, and that never again,
unto the ages of ages, will you see the seizure of death or the toll-houses. So even this single thought, which lets the joy of the Kingdom of Heaven shine into you, means that you are already inside Paradise. And just as we came here in order to pass into this Paradise and this rest, so now let us strive for it. Even if we do not manage it perfectly, we will fall and we will get back up. No discouragement, no despair, none of that. Those belong to the devil. We, with hope, will fall and rise again, fall and rise again, fall and rise again.
Onward! We will run the devil in circles. What will we do to him? We will outwit him, and we will slip right through into the Kingdom.
