Summary

Elder Ephraim expounds the Jesus Prayer as the quintessence of all prayer, five words spoken not with the lips but within the heart, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Baptism cleanses ancestral sin, so the believer must gather mind and attention into the heart; following St Symeon the New Theologian, he describes the technique of noetic prayer, sitting quietly, bowing the head, and setting the interior word to the prayer. Grace lies buried in the heart like a spark smothered by passions, rising through repentance until its radiance illumines the mind; prayer begins as human effort but is taken up by grace to become the energy of the Holy Spirit. Success requires a virtuous, watchful life, and for monks obedience and rejection of self-will; the prayer becomes a shield at the hour of death against encircling demons.

This talk on prayer was given at the Holy Monastery of Philotheou.

I watch over, I observe the enemy as he prepares for war.

I lay my plans, I take counsel within my mind. Nepsis, this

watchfulness, shows us the way to God. What is this way to God? According

to the fathers, and according to the writings of the fathers,

the way is the Jesus Prayer. Thank you. Nepsis is interpreted to mean: I am watchful, I pay attention,

I keep vigil, I watch over, I observe the enemy as he prepares for war. I lay my plans, I take counsel within my mind. This watchfulness shows us the

way to God.

What is this way to God? According to the fathers, the way is the Jesus Prayer. Father. Why is this prayer unlike the other prayers of the Church, unlike the hymns of glory, unlike the supplicatory and hymnographic texts of the Church?

Because this prayer is the very quintessence of all prayers, set in an utterly simple form, in five words.

This prayer holds within itself a power that exists of itself, a power that renews and sanctifies. And it holds this grace because it is not pronounced with the lips, but is spoken in spirit and in truth.

It is confessed within the heart of man, where the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit is.

Our effort in this prayer must be as great as it can possibly be. For it is not so easy for the nous, the spiritual intellect of man, to be drawn away from earthly things, from its wandering, from the things that pass. For the nous had grown

accustomed to dwelling outside itself, feeding on harmful food, and so various sicknesses of the soul are bred within us. This prayer of Jesus stands in five words: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy. When we come to understand that,

by our Baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity, we were not only cleansed from the stain of ancestral sin, but at the same time also received the gift of the Holy Spirit, and when we sincerely believe that God himself dwells within us,

the infinite One who is beyond all understanding, this faith will help us to grasp clearly the meaning and the power of the prayer of the heart, and the reason it requires the gathering of our attention and of the nous within the heart. ...

into the pot. The nous, the spiritual intellect. When it enters, when it finds the place of the heart, and in this striving of the nous to find the place and the natural heart, it must not stay idle and inactive, but, according to the fathers, it must be given work: it must set the interior word,

the endiathetos logos, in motion to utter the five words of this simple and unadorned prayer. A passage in the Gospel says, “But you, when you pray, enter into your inner chamber. ” This does not refer to any physical chamber or material place, but to a spiritual one; and that spiritual place within

the human person is the heart. Certainly. This is why this prayer, according to the fathers, is called God-taught, God-established, and evangelical, for the Holy Apostles pondered it, and even the Most Holy Theotokos herself; and according to the corresponding teaching of Saint Gregory Palamas,

this prayer is also called the prayer of Paradise, because through this prayer man stands before God as the first-created did before they were exiled from Paradise. Music Saint Symeon the New Theologian speaks to us about the method of

the prayer of the heart, a prayer that he himself practiced throughout his life.

“Sit,” says the Saint, “in a quiet place. Close your door and bow your head. Rest your chin against your chest, so that with your mind and your eyes you may look toward the place where the heart is. Then search with your mind, and it will certainly find the heart—without, of course, imagining it to be something else. But you will be perfected.

And during the ascesis of prayer, hold your breath—that is, do not breathe normally—so that the nous, the spiritual intellect, may be more readily gathered in from distraction and led into your heart. The nous, within your heart. Thank you. Let it not remain idle,

but give it the prayer through the interior word, the endiathetos logos. The word. At the beginning of this effort the nous will meet difficulty; it will meet a kind of hardness, a darkness. But after a little striving all of this steps aside,

it gives way, and the heart begins to work spiritually, naturally, by the grace of the Holy Spirit that we received at the very hour and moment of Holy Baptism. The grace of the Holy Spirit lies within the heart like a spark, and this spark is buried, pressed down and smothered by the

passions and the sins of a person. And the more a person, through repentance, through metanoia, and through a virtuous life, casts off, removes, and throws out of himself, out of his heart, this weight, this material and passion-laden burden, the more the spark of

the Holy Spirit rises up, and the radiances of the Holy Spirit illumine the nous and change the heart in the best, most spiritual way. At the beginning of the effort, in the practice of the prayer, it is done by the strength, the will, and the energy of the person himself. But afterward the matter changes:

grace takes up this energy of the person and it becomes the energy of grace. The prayer is no longer counted as a human effort, but becomes the energy of the Holy Spirit. And the prayer gives grace, gives blessing; it becomes exultation, it becomes illumination,

it becomes inexpressible joy. The heart rests from its passionate movements, it feels light, and the nous is now led, and itself begins to lead the way. In the beginning, the labor of prayer is considerable. It takes time, labor, patient endurance, and persistence.

The nous must be unhooked from the things of the world and led whole and entire into its own dwelling place, into itself; and there, within, it must begin to produce the honey—the spiritual honey of our noetic prayer. Only through nepsis—watchfulness—and prayer can a person be

freed from the shameful passions and from every work of the devil. Other prayers do not have the power to free a person from enslavement to the passions.

Only this prayer of Jesus has the power, because the name of Christ is not a simple name, empty of any power and grace. It is full, it is laden, it is complete with divine grace, and when it is remembered it fills the person with grace.

That is why we often feel ourselves within to be empty, hollow, without grace, and this happens when the prayer fails to be said within us. The enemy of our soul takes advantage of these empty places; he sets his spiritual dynamite and blows into the

air everything we had gained and built up before. On this All-Holy Name of Christ, as on a foundation stone, let us build the spiritual house of the soul.

Here let all of us give our attention. To go forward in this building, let us call it the divine building, we must attend to the preconditions;

we must see to it that our life matches this purpose. We must be careful in what we think, in what we say, and in what we do. Let us not think wickedly; let us not chatter idly with our thoughts, let us not condemn,

let us not grow angry. Let us give no consent to evil logismoi, and likewise in our words, because whatever a person thinks, once he yields and consents to it, he expresses it, he brings it out, he makes it something real when he puts it into words. And when the word becomes a deed,

then the thing is complete.

When on the one hand we struggle, or set out to win the prayer, the monastic aim, since without the prayer we will not win it, and on the other hand we pay no attention to the preconditions, then we labor in vain in our effort. Thank you. That is why we must first

struggle to make our life virtuous and in keeping with this purpose toward prayer. It is not possible for anyone to go forward in this divine grace of the Holy Spirit, so as to reach the point of praying within himself in the Holy Spirit, while being careless about whatever he thinks wrongly and sinfully.

It is not possible to win the prayer of the heart before one has won the victory over sin in the mind. Of course, prayer holds back, hinders, and fights against sin, against the thoughts, against the inner ponderings. But this is still an effort, an energy of the person against sin.

It is not yet called prayer in the Holy Spirit. Prayer in the Holy Spirit is called an energy; it is called another work that happens on its own. It begins with the power of the Holy Spirit, and it becomes like another person within the person, and this is the spiritual man, the one who prays in the heart. To reach this grace, our life must first be virtuous and in keeping with it. Our life must be watchful and attentive.

“No one who puts his hand to the plow and turns back is fit for the Kingdom of Heaven. ” It is impossible for anyone to move forward, to come directly to God, and to attain this great goal while looking back—watching what one person is doing and what another is making. In other words, if a person is forever preoccupied with others in thought, in word, and in deed, he can never come to God directly.

He must become blind, sightless, without any light toward others and toward the deeds of others, and only with the two eyes of the soul look straight toward God, toward the light, so that he too may become light, and his soul may shine, and he may come to know the mysteries that take place within the heart of the baptized person.

All who have been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity have received this grace, this divine spark. Yet we are unaware of the fullness of this grace, because it lies buried beneath our passions and sins.

In proportion to the lightening the heart receives, as our life is changed, the grace rises up, it comes to the surface, and the person comes to know and to understand the words of the Gospel, that the Kingdom of God is within us. Music May everything the struggling ascetics teach us about prayer draw us on, may it awaken in us the hunger and the

desire to come to know this ourselves, to taste this grace; and then we will enter into the meaning of what the neptic Fathers have left us as a spiritual inheritance in their sacred writings.

This is why we became monks, so that we might reach this state.

People come from abroad, from other lands, Christians indeed, they believe in Christ but wrongly, heretics that is; yet because they have read the neptic writings of the Fathers of the Eastern Church, because they have read about the work of watchfulness and especially about noetic prayer, They come here to be taught by fathers who themselves practice the Jesus Prayer,

and to hear them speak from their own experience. They come with such effort and hardship, from so far away. And how humbling this is for us monks, the spiritual descendants of those Fathers of nepsis and watchfulness. The children of these Holy Fathers come to us to be taught this inheritance that the Holy Fathers left us, and here we are so poor in this very thing,

unable to speak to them from praxis, from the experience of this prayer; we hold the inheritance in our hands, and yet we ourselves have taken absolutely nothing of it within us. Hey. We must strive to preserve and faithfully follow the monastic path of obedience. so that the preconditions may be in place for

us to be able to receive the grace of prayer. Let us watch over our obedience, let us take care not to do our own will, not to hold to our own private beliefs, but to follow faithfully the guidance of our spiritual father. We must follow the guidance given to us by our spiritual father and not conceal anything within ourselves, but bring everything into

the light of Holy Confession. When a monk acts on his own, doing something in secret and trying to escape the attention of his elder, this is a fundamental error. For self-will is a serious obstacle in the struggle to attain this heavenly grace. Saint Symeon the New

Theologian received this gift of the Holy Spirit in measureless measure, because he had absolute trust in and reverence for his spiritual guide.

He won the grace of the Holy Spirit with the winning ticket of absolute obedience—both to his spiritual father and in the obedience assigned to him as his ministry.

If, as we said at the beginning of this talk, we want to reach the divine grace of noetic prayer, yet we do not tend to our life and to our duty as monks, as obedient sons, then we will be laboring in vain.

Even the slightest attentiveness to the way we live will enable us to advance along the divine path that leads us into the light of prayer.

What the heart of a monk who prays in spirit and in truth receives cannot be put into words.

Our Holy Fathers have spoken very clearly about this grace. Of course, we are poor in this knowledge of grace, and I first of all. But if we watch over our life, the grace of God, which is invisible and spiritual, is near us, close at hand, within our very heart, and it watches over and attends to the change of our life. We must not hold within us any thoughts, any beliefs,

any intentions without all of them being made known to our spiritual guide. Very good! A man who is his own counselor is his own adversary. That person who takes counsel from himself alone becomes an enemy to himself. Whatever the logismos, the intrusive thought, tells him, when he puts it into practice, he becomes his own enemy and destroys himself.

This is why perfect obedience leads a person safely, surely, directly, and without obstacles to God. So let us attend to the preconditions of prayer, that we may attain it, that we may win it by the grace of God, with the help of God, with the mercy of God.

May it become a miracle within us, our treasure, our hope, our light, illuminating the path of our life. May it become our guide to God, our consolation, our deliverance, and an antidote to spiritual death. May this grace carry us unhindered through the aerial tollhouses.

Before the throne of God may it be a good defense for us.

A father of the Church said that the person of prayer, at the hour of death, at the very hour and moment when the demons will encircle him with their threats, will find that this prayer becomes for him a shield, becomes a weapon, becomes a power that drives the demons away, so that they cannot approach him,

cannot touch him, cannot harm him. What a great thing this prayer is, and yet the devil takes every measure, gathering all his forces, with the aim of preventing a person from making this prayer his own. For he knows beforehand that if a person wins something like this, the devil must take his ticket and depart from that person.

With these few words of the Holy Fathers we have seen a picture, we have seen something of the picture of prayer. As for all that concerns prayer, in our own prayer, with this simple prayer, let us pray in this way with pain, with longing, to our Christ, that he would grant us

his name within the heart. And once we win this grace, we will feel ourselves rich, strong, and fortified. Then our life, our spiritual and monastic life, will take on meaning. Otherwise, if we are careless, the time of our life will simply pass us by, And so our life will pass without any gain, without our receiving any spiritual benefit. Thank you. We will naturally come to death and be led

into the next world utterly impoverished, with a terrible remorse: we will realize that we have lost the contest, the eternal contest, and that now nothing can be put right. Before we come to face this eternal threat, let us be watchful now and strive to live the monastic life and gain the grace of the Holy Spirit.
