Summary

Elder Ephraim describes noetic and unceasing prayer as the central ascetic work of watchfulness and a vital calling of Orthodox monastic life. Elder Joseph the Hesychast received the Jesus Prayer in his heart through divine grace near the summit of Mount Athos, and with Father Arsenios cultivated the gift through years of silence, obedience, self-denial, and vigil. Silence must extend beyond restraining speech to guarding the mind from distractions, idle concerns, and memories that obstruct prayer, and monastics should invoke Jesus Christ from the moment they awaken. Pride, contradiction, self-justification, and idle talk form a wall between the soul and God, while humility, self-reproach, and remembrance of death dismantle it; noetic prayer gives experiential knowledge of God's presence and protects the soul at death.

This talk on Noetic and Unceasing Prayer was given at the Holy Monastery of Philotheou. I have spoken to you before about noetic and unceasing prayer.

Our watchful Fathers have left us a great many teachings on unceasing prayer. Unceasing prayer is part of the work of nepsis, or watchfulness.

I have spoken to you before and shared some of the teachings and counsels of my saintly elder, who was a modern-day teacher of prayer, a teacher with practical experience.

As we have said, the Holy Fathers have left us a great deal, and above all, their lives teach us how unceasing prayer is acquired by the grace of God.

What can speak most deeply to our souls is the teaching of my elder, both in word and in deed. He lived in our own times and, through the grace of God and his own many-sided spiritual struggle, was counted worthy to acquire this gift, this exceptional spiritual gift of noetic prayer.

He labored greatly, both bodily and spiritually. As you know, when he first became a monk, he searched for a teacher of noetic prayer. Despite all his efforts, he could not find one, and he reached the point of despair, wondering what would become of him without such an experienced teacher. After all, he had left the world and everything he possessed,

in order to find such a person, attach himself to him, and attain what he had read about in the books of the watchful Fathers. One day, when his despair at not finding such a man had reached its height, God guided his steps to a place below the summit of Mount Athos. There, God and the Most Holy Theotokos were pleased to help him, both in his despair and in his search for that man, so that he might attain the purpose for which he had come to the Holy Mountain.

From morning until the setting of the sun he wept and pleaded and begged God. And toward the end of the day, there where he was praying, gazing with his own eyes at the little chapel of the Panagia, the Mother of God, at the summit of Athos, there he poured out his whole soul. He offered it to God as one complete supplication, that God would help him in this great and difficult struggle that had hold of him.

And there the great miracle took place. He received something spiritual, something noetic, something divine. It seemed to come from the chapel of the Most Holy Theotokos and enter his soul, entering deep into his heart. Then he felt the Jesus Prayer being said within him by itself.

The Jesus Prayer—“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”—began to be said of its own accord, with exceedingly great grace, with an abundance of love and ardent longing for God. And he thought to himself and said, “This is noetic prayer.”

Before this, of course, he had been like a blind man searching for the way. He read and heard about the light of noetic prayer, but he did not see it. He believed that it existed, and this was why he searched for it so intensely. But when the eyes of his soul were opened after this miracle, he truly saw the light of God, the light of noetic prayer.

He was astonished, and, as I told you, he said: «This — this is the Noetic Prayer, the prayer of the mind in the heart. This is what the Fathers are talking about. So this is what it is like; this is the taste it has. This is from God.» And, filled with this whole wonder of prayer,

he was then guided into a cave. There he began to breathe in the name of Christ as he inhaled and to breathe it out as he exhaled. By ordering the prayer in this way—through guidance that had come to him inwardly—he was granted his first vision.

From that time onward, according to the elder, the prayer never ceased. And one day, shortly before his blessed repose, he told me: “My child, God has counted me worthy to know the full depth, height, and breadth of noetic prayer.

My soul feels entirely as though it were in Paradise; there is a Paradise within me. You too, my child, must strive and labor for this, so that when the years pass and you reach old age, you may have something laid up for that time. As the saying of the world puts it: work in your youth so that you may have provision in your old age.”

“Father Arsenios and I,” he said, “grew very weary and labored greatly with God’s help, and now we experience this spiritual state.” It is the fruit of the labors of youth. And what were the elder’s labors?

First and foremost, there was silence, a virtue of fundamental importance for anyone who wishes to advance in noetic prayer.

This means not only silence of the bodily mouth, but above all silence within the mouth of the soul—the nous, the spiritual intellect—so that the nous does not wander aimlessly here and there. This scattering of the nous is a serious obstacle to noetic prayer.

Of course, I believe it is a miracle and a blessing from God for a Christian, and especially a monk, to be counted worthy of this gift of noetic prayer.

Thank you. Keep me in your prayers. But a person must also do everything required on his own part. Every human effort must be made. When a person’s inner and outer voice grows silent, knowingly and with understanding—not out of ignorance or at random, but with the awareness that silence is—

Silence is the path and the aid that leads us toward noetic prayer.

When a monk keeps silence and inwardly compels himself to be united with God through noetic prayer, the initial difficulty is not small. As soon as the devil senses that a person—a Christian, and especially a monk—has made this beginning and set himself this goal, to attain noetic prayer, which is the aim, the center, the foundation, the summit, and the very calling of the monk, he will do everything in his power. He will marshal every resource he has to place barriers and obstacles in his way, so that he may make no progress and never taste it at all.

Because the devil is afraid. If the monk once tastes something of noetic prayer, the prayer of the heart, who can hold him back after that? Who can stop him? A man says to himself: "This prayer is so beautiful. It has such a sweetness to it, such light. It unites you with God so closely, it strengthens your faith so much. What happens if I go deeper still? What happens if this mystery of noetic prayer is revealed to me?"

Is the struggle worthwhile or not? The devil realizes that this young struggler may begin to think in this way and make his decision. So the devil says to himself, “I will put every obstacle in his path, lest he come to know even a little of it.”

This is why, my fathers, we experience such difficulty in noetic prayer. The devil comes and fills our minds with countless idle distractions.

He brings back memories from the past: how we lived in the world, what we experienced, whether sinful or not.

In our present life, in the place where we live and among the people around us, he brings one matter after another to mind. We become absorbed in concerns outside our duty and in things with which we ought not to occupy ourselves, so long as the most cunning enemy can hinder the holy purpose that God has placed within the human person, the Christian, and the monk.

We do not understand how the devil schemes and entangles us. We think, “This matter really does require my attention. Yes, that other matter is necessary; this one is proper; that one is complicated.”

Then he leads us astray. Time passes; precious time slips away, and the years go by. The nous—the spiritual intellect—acquires the bad habit of wandering here and there, while the mouth talks about this matter, that matter, and the next. And so time passes like a dream, like a shadow, like a little bird that flies away without leaving any trace of its flight or its path.

In this way time continually leaves us behind, and the devil robs us of the very purpose for which we entered the monastic life.

Let me tell you the deepest truth: God brought us here out of His great love and abundant mercy, so that we might realize that, as monks, we must advance in prayer.

We must come to know something of noetic prayer.

We must behold a little of its beauty and taste something of the fragrance of noetic prayer.

We must see how the soul speaks with God, what it says to Him, and how God answers; what the person of God is like, what the attributes of the divine person are, how God reveals Himself, and how God relates to the soul. Noetic prayer strengthens faith in God.

When someone who prays noetically experiences the majesty of faith, millions of philosophers may come and argue against the faith, but they will never shake him in the least.

The simple monk, through the great faith he experiences, will refute them all. For they will speak from delusion and abstract knowledge, while he will speak from what he has tasted and experienced: the truth that God exists.

I said that it is a miracle for noetic prayer to take root within a person. But for the miracle to happen, we must stir it into being; we must compel ourselves toward it.

God must see that this humble, poor, insignificant person has exerted what little and feeble effort he can in this matter. As I have told you, my holy elder prayed unceasingly through the miracle God granted him.

But first, of course, there was the wholehearted longing of his heart and his entire struggle of self-denial and ascesis—ascetic discipline. The miracle was founded upon these things.

During the vigil, the elder’s prayer reached its height. His heart and his nous—the spiritual intellect—became like the Burning Bush, and even his whole cell seemed aflame. That is why, when we entered at night to confess our logismoi—our intrusive thoughts—and to hear a few words from him, the fragrance of noetic prayer would envelop us.

And many times I would wonder and say, “What must be taking place within that soul, within that heart?” Therefore, if we are to learn through our own experience what was taking place within the heart of this man of our own times,

We too must taste something of this and come to know the prayer as it begins to say itself within us, as far as possible, whether for a long time or only briefly. Through noetic prayer, we must see and taste what God is like, what beauty He possesses, and what His divine attributes are. In a miraculous and mystical way, we must sense His presence and His existence: how He sustains creation; how He is within creation and beyond creation, yet wholly present within the heart; how He becomes theoria, divine vision, within the nous; and how He takes the nous and leads it, by divine guidance, into His mysteries, where He reveals Himself to it.

The Elder experienced all these things in their fullness.

That is why, even today, we firmly believe that he has great boldness before God.

That is why God took him: to intercede for us, to prepare a place for us, and to protect us from above on the difficult path of our salvation.

Let us invoke his prayers and ask him, from the state he possessed while he was here in this life, to grant us a share as well, so that we too may know God as he knew Him. For there is no other purpose—especially for a monk, and for us—than to know God.

We must not merely believe in Him as we do now, but see Him in another way. We must see Him through another lens, as only those who have communion with Him can see Him. For this reason, we must compel ourselves in everything, and especially in silence: to close our mouths and not concern ourselves with this matter, that matter, and every other matter.

I am a monk under obedience, and God has granted me the grace of being free from worldly cares through obedience. I have one assigned duty, while the one who governs the monastery carries responsibility for me. My duty is to go down to the Church, perform my assigned work, and obey the spiritual instruction to remain silent, not occupy myself with many things, and say the Jesus Prayer.

The Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy.” I must continually remember death and say to myself, “Perhaps today is my last day. I must die with the prayer.” If I find it difficult to say it with my nous, then my mouth should say it—whispering it quietly.

This spoken invocation will help the nous to utter the name of Christ. Temptation says to me, “Speak. Tell the brother about this. Get involved in this affair. What did that person say? Why did that other thing happen?” At that moment, I should stop and ask, “What benefit will I gain by saying that, thinking about that, or becoming entangled in that affair?” I should speak to myself and ask, “What good will it do me? What will I gain?” Then my conscience will answer.

The conscience will say, “Nothing. You will harm yourself and place an obstacle in the way of noetic prayer. Do not speak.” Then, if conscience and the will prevail, the monk under obedience will remain silent.

He will begin the prayer again. Then Satan, as he watches him continue on his way, will find some opportunity and suddenly attack once more. Again, the monk must keep his nous attentive, watching where the blow will come from. This is why, according to the Fathers, the monk must be many-eyed.

The Fathers say that the monk should be like the Cherubim. Just as they are many-eyed, beholding God from every direction and receiving the knowledge of God from every side, so the monk must keep his eyes open and watch from where evil will attack him.

As we know, Satan has no other work than continually to deceive man and trip him up until he leads him into Hell.

For us, the matter at stake is our own personal salvation. For the devil, it is not his personal salvation, but how he may trip us up. Yet although our purpose is our salvation, when we compare our zeal and effort with the devil’s, we see that we make no effort and exert no force to being saved and avoiding condemnation to Hell.

I have spoken to you many times and told you that, from the moment we open our eyes after sleep, the prayer must be in our nous or on our lips. We must not allow our minds to wander wherever they please and only later remember that we ought to say the Jesus Prayer.

As soon as we open our eyes, we must bring the Jesus Prayer to mind. If we compel ourselves in this way, God will help us. It will become a holy habit: as soon as our eyes open, prayer will take first place in the day.

When we lived with the Elder, his first counsel and the first discipline he required of us were silence and the Jesus Prayer.

That master knew that if the novice remained silent and devoted himself to the prayer, he would make a good beginning.

He would lay the foundation stone, a good sign for the future. The Elder spoke to us continually and watched over us constantly, so that we would live in silence together with prayer. As for obedience, he not only instructed us in it continually; it was also the steadfast way of life of the brotherhood.

It is a fact that every brother who compelled himself chiefly in these two things—silence and prayer—truly made a good beginning and laid the foundation stone in the building of his spiritual house.

And indeed, what followed proved this to be true. It was not merely something the Elder contemplated; we saw it borne out in the active ascetic life.

Each one of us can let his conscience tell him whether he truly made this beginning or not.

If he did make this beginning, he will have experienced some measure of the grace of noetic prayer.

If not—if he did not compel himself—then once again his conscience assures him that he did not make a good beginning, because he does not have the prayer within him. He has not experienced what the Fathers describe as the fruit and grace of prayer.

As monks, we must not lose sight of our purpose.

After all these counsels, we must understand by now that the devil is hindering us from advancing in noetic prayer. We urgently need it—not because our souls need it, nor because the neptic Fathers say so, but because noetic prayer, the spiritual work of the Fathers of nepsis and watchfulness, must continue. It must not disappear, especially from the Holy Mountain.

It is the only place of monastic life left in the world. If the monks of the Holy Mountain do not come to know prayer, if they do not live it, who else in the world will come to know this mystery of prayer? And if the monks, with the avaton, the enclosure of the Holy Mountain, if the monks, with their undistracted life, if those under obedience, with all the freedom from cares that they have, do not attain noetic prayer, the prayer of the heart, by the grace of God, then who in the world will come to know it, with so many cares and so many occupations?

This is a grave matter and lays a very great responsibility upon us—especially upon me, who knew and lived beside my elder, this man who was a contemporary master of noetic prayer. If we do not compel ourselves, and if God does not have mercy on us and grant us some knowledge of noetic prayer, even if not its fullness and perfection, what defense will we have? And what defense will I, the most wretched of all, have if we cannot give an account showing that we came to know it, that we responded to God’s mercy and to the inheritance of our Fathers of nepsis and watchfulness?

At this point I feel deeply ashamed and troubled about myself, because I lived for so many years beside this teacher and have not yet become even a disciple.

I wonder with fear what answer I will give, both to God and to the Elder. We are supposed to be his successors, the Elder’s brotherhood, preserving the continuity and the tradition. We must compel ourselves to greater effort.

With katanyxis, with compunction, let us beseech God to give us this help, this grace, this power of self-compulsion, and this illumination, so that we may resist the devil, who continually trips us up and absorbs us in so many things that lie outside our purpose.

We see how often he deceives us: we talk about so many things, discuss so many subjects, become scandalized, and busy ourselves with making and doing things, while our true purpose is pushed aside. Why did we come here and become monks? At the very least, we must confess that we have no ascesis, no ascetic discipline. That much is obvious.

That is the truth. We have not attained the ascesis of those Fathers of ours. They tell us, ‘Look, my child, if you cannot guard your nous, your spiritual intellect, then guard your mouth.’ It is as though they were saying to us, ‘You cannot attain our ascetic discipline. At the very least, restrain yourselves: close your mouths and say the prayer.’ Even this is good, and from here begins the hope of salvation.

At the very least, can we not keep our body pure? Let us guard our logismoi, our intrusive thoughts. Although everything begins with the logismoi, we still want to have some form of ascesis. Why do we say that we cannot? We say that we are weak—whether this is true or merely a delusion—yet we have strength enough to talk endlessly and let our minds wander among countless things.

These are not difficult things. This is not a bodily illness, so we cannot excuse ourselves here. Here we all stand guilty. Let us recognize our guilt, ask forgiveness, and begin to speak with God. What is troubling us? What holds us back? What prevents us? Why are we preoccupied with so many things and neglect “the one thing needful,” which is to remain in constant communion with God?

We must remain continually with God. If we pray and have communion with Him, then all the other things will also find their proper order and fall into place. But when we are not inwardly united with God through prayer, everything else becomes a complete jumble.

And especially when we spend a great deal of time together, the devil takes advantage of this and pushes us into idle talk.

We also lack the humility that brings immediate change. Instead, ego comes first in everything, and contradiction is always on our lips. At the first opportunity, at the first word, at the first correction, at the first admonition, you see contradiction coming out of our mouths.

Contradiction and self-justification—how can such a person ever make a beginning and become united with God? We have still not learned to say, ‘Bless,’ nor have we learned to ask forgiveness and remain silent when corrected. Instead, we immediately feel an inner urge, an inner pressure, to answer back.

This egoism is the wall between God and the soul. All the temptations that come upon us are meant to bring down and demolish this wall, so that the soul may enter into communion with God and its darkened part may be illumined by the spiritual Sun.

But bringing down this wall requires great strength and great self-compulsion. A person certainly cannot do it alone, but only with God’s help. Yet God asks the person to stretch out his hands and exert whatever strength he has; from that point onward, God Himself will bring the wall down.

If we want prayer to begin working within the heart and the nous, we must strive to be silent, not to occupy ourselves with many things, and to learn humility.

When we look within ourselves and see self-centeredness, contradiction, and self-justification, we must recognize that this is the obstacle, this is the wall, this is the sickness, this is the filth of the devil. This is where our practical work must begin: closing our mouths, choking off the intrusive thought of contradiction, and reproaching ourselves.

And when someone corrects us, let us say, “Indeed, I am at fault. That is how it is. The brother is right, and I am mistaken.” This is not the first time; whenever I spoke in my own defense and offered excuses, I found in the end that I was wrong.

By reproaching oneself, keeping one’s mouth closed, and meditating on death,

and by reflecting on one’s sinfulness, an atmosphere of penthos—mourning for sin—arises within, and the aim of prayer urges one to say the Jesus Prayer. If he does this every day, making it his daily purpose to compel himself in this way, he will gradually make progress.

It is perfectly natural that he should make progress.

It is like what a doctor says to patients, for example: «Take these medicines, follow this course of treatment, and you will see this result in your health. You will see this result: the illness giving way.» In the same way, the spiritual physician says that if this is done and that is put into practice, it is entirely natural that the monk will make progress in spiritual health.

This is the purpose: that we may be saved. And if God counts us worthy to receive prayer within ourselves, then we shall vindicate the Fathers and confirm all that is said here by the grace of God.

We must certainly come to know something of this, so that we may vindicate the Fathers and the grace of God. In our prayer, we must pray fervently and beseech God, beseech our Most Holy Theotokos, and beseech the elder to intercede, so that God may help us come to know noetic prayer and become humble successors of the Fathers—the least of them—for in our present age even this would be something very great.

We need this prayer; we need to come to know this light of God, because without light a person walks in darkness. Tomorrow death will come—fearful death. What will happen then? May God stretch forth His hand to help us. Our conscience will overwhelm us with its reproach. A great Father of nepsis, or watchfulness, says that when a monk has prayer within him, then, when the hour comes for him to die and depart this life, the prayer will continue unceasingly within him. When the demons come to surround him and inflict the evil they intend, the prayer will keep them far away.

The prayer will not allow them to approach him.

The prayer will burn them, and they will remain far away.

Guarded by this prayer, he will pass through the aerial toll-houses. Behold the culmination of noetic prayer—or rather, its great fruit, its great attainment, the crowning achievement of noetic prayer:

the safe passage of that person’s soul toward God. After death, guarded, illumined, kept secure, and sheltered, the soul will surely make its way toward its encounter with God.

Isn't this the ultimate success, the very finish line we're aiming for?

But when we have nothing of this kind, when we have not received this prayer and have not compelled ourselves, then we shall find ourselves unfortified, unprotected, unillumined, and unsheltered before that fearful apparition and that terrible ordeal with the demons. Both at the hour of death and during the passage through the toll-houses, we shall be in a very difficult state.

Fear and trembling will grip us at every moment and in every encounter with the demons. Then we shall understand what has befallen us and how great our failure was because we made no effort to acquire prayer.

Now that we hear these things—and I am the first to hear them as applying to myself—let us compel ourselves to close both the inner and the outer mouth. Let us say only what is necessary and continually say the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ.” Let us learn humility both inwardly and in our speech. Let us neither justify ourselves nor contradict others, but learn to say, “Bless,” and then remain silent. Then, truly, by the grace of God, we shall make a beginning.

From the very moment we make a beginning, we shall immediately feel relief. We shall breathe a different air. This will be the first taste. And if we hold firmly to it, we shall advance to greater things.

So now, in our prayer, let us ask God to give us the grace to compel ourselves in prayer and in silence. Let us continually beseech Him to grant us the spirit of humility and to reveal to us our utter nothingness.

May He grant us self-knowledge. May we come to feel that we are nothing—not merely as an idea, but in the very depths of our soul. May we feel that we are nothing: broken and undone. We are nothing more than a broken and fragmented nothing.

This is the truth about what we really are. Anything said beyond this is falsehood and deception.

As we offer this prayer to God every day and compel ourselves to persevere, we must hope that God will help us. He will open the way for us, and we will come to know something utterly foreign to us, yet deeply familiar in the life and experience of the Fathers.

«Εμείς», λέει, «με τον Πατέρα Αρσένιο πολύ κουραστήκαμε, πολύ δουλέψαμε με τη βοήθεια του Θεού και τώρα νιώθουμε αυτή την κατάσταση την πνευματική». Είναι καρπός των νεανικών κόπων. Και ποιοι ήταν οι κόποι του Γέροντα;

Είναι ο μοναδικός μοναστικός χώρος πλέον στον κόσμο. Αν οι αγιορείτες μοναχοί δεν γνωρίσουν, δεν βιώσουν την προσευχή, ποιος άλλος στον κόσμο θα γνωρίσει αυτό το μυστήριο της προσευχής; Ή αν οι μοναχοί με το άβατο του Αγίου Όρους, ή αν οι μοναχοί με το απερίσπαστο, αν οι υποτακτικοί με την όλη ελευθερία που έχουν από τη μέριμνα δεν κατορθώσουν, χάριτι Θεού, τη νοερά προσευχή, ποιος στον κόσμο θα τη γνωρίσει με τόσες μέριμνες και με τόσες ασχολίες;

Είναι σοβαρό και πάρα πολύ υπεύθυνο σε εμάς και ιδιαίτερα σε εμένα που γνώρισα, που έζησα τον γέροντά μου, αυτόν τον άνθρωπο, τον σύγχρονο της νοεράς προσευχής. Εάν δεν βιάσουμε τον εαυτό μας και δεν μας ελεήσει ο Θεός να γνωρίσουμε ένα μέρος, αν όχι το όλο και το απόλυτο της νοεράς προσευχής, τι απολογία θα έχουμε, και πρώτος εγώ, δυστυχής, εάν δεν δώσουμε λόγο ότι γνωρίσαμε, ότι ανταποκριθήκαμε στο έλεος του Θεού και στην κληρονομιά των νηπτικών μας Πατέρων;

Αυτή δεν είναι το τέρμα της επιτυχίας;
