Summary
Elder Ephraim announces a Church-blessed mission throughout the United States and Canada for the renewal of the faithful. The rapid growth of the first women's monastery shows the desire for monastic life; monasticism is the spiritual strength of the Church, since ascetic purification prepared many monks to become bishops and teachers. Orthodox faith is inseparable from ascetic practice, and true Orthodoxy requires Orthopraxy, as when a monk's loving hospitality moved a heretical visitor to embrace the faith. Monasteries guide the young, console the suffering, and offer refuge from addiction, exploitation, and heresy; the Pittsburgh monastery exemplifies this ministry. Despite opposition, the mission will continue across Montreal, Toronto, and the United States, confident that work originating from God cannot be defeated.

Talk: “Monasticism and Orthodoxy.” Given abroad.
With great joy and great love, we have come among you once again to continue the work that God has entrusted to us,
for the ultimate spiritual renewal of the people of God, especially those living abroad.
And I humbly believe, and I pray it has God's approval, that a very great and saving Pentecost will take place in this new world, which has every right to be reborn and to draw near to God in purity and through the Orthodox faith. With the help of our good God, and because all good works
These are good works, the works of God, for the only truly good works are those blessed by God Himself.
And because this work needed a firm foundation—and because all the good works of God are shaken and tossed by storms—
in the end they do not suffer shipwreck; rather, they continue onward toward completion. What I mean is that my personal matter with the Church here abroad, the Church of North and South America, has been settled and officially confirmed. Now that we have your blessing, we shall proceed steadily.
What I mean is that I will be a humble and insignificant clergyman, and nothing more than a missionary in America and Canada.
I approached the Archbishop of America
the Bishop, who of course has always been affectionate toward me, and I told him, I begged him, I asked him, I made a request that he give me his blessing to use me as an instrument of God for the rebirth of the people here, solely through the Mystery of Holy Confession.
and asked to serve without any parish duties at all: wherever he needs me, wherever he wishes—in the north, in the south, among white people, among black people—wherever he wishes to send me.
I have no demands. I told him that I need absolutely nothing—only my cassock, my priestly stole, and a piece of bread, which my Christian people will give me. That is all I want, nothing else. And may the benefit brought to souls through this blessing that you grant me be for the benefit and salvation of your own soul.
The Archbishop, of course, accepted wholeheartedly and said to me, “Certainly, you have my blessing and my permission.”
I also asked that, whenever I need to go to Greece to visit my monasteries, I may have his blessing and receive the necessary permission. “You will have it,” he said. And so, now that everything has been established on a proper and canonical foundation, we are beginning this work by the grace of God. I ask you to pray that we may have the health we so greatly need as a weapon, so that we may carry out this work, which will be extremely demanding.
It was rushed, and as you can see, we came from America; I stayed a few days, in two short visits, at the monastery in Pittsburgh that we have prepared by the grace of God, and we were counted worthy to see it become the first monastery.
The monastery of our Most Holy Theotokos filled up within a single year. We also have other young women who wish to become nuns, but we have no more cells in which to receive and house them.
And so we can see how abundantly monasticism will flourish in this part of the world. That is why all these difficulties arose over the years—difficulties well known to you—which we endured, and through which we remained standing by the grace of God.
And we know that humility leads to exaltation. Christ our God “humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even death on the Cross. Therefore God also highly exalted Him and bestowed upon Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in Heaven, on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue should confess,” and so forth.
Everything that happened in the past served to lay the foundation for this mission, to the glory of the name of God. Monasticism is the sinew and strength of the Church. Where there are sinews, there is life. And the monastic life is the chosen part of God’s army.
Monastics are regarded as spiritual commandos: they enter the battle first and undertake extremely dangerous missions to save their country. The monks who attained holiness number in the thousands. And from their ranks also came the clergy, including the senior clergy and those holding the highest offices of the priesthood—the bishops, the Patriarchs, and others.
If we look at the calendar of Saints of the Church, we shall see that ninety-five percent of the holy hierarchs and Patriarchs came from the monastic ranks. They were monks who first became light themselves; then, by the will of God, they were placed upon the lampstand of the Church, and they gave light to the world.
First they purified themselves through ascetic struggle, and they received the gift of being able to purify their flock as well, the Christians. If they themselves were not pure, how could they purify anyone else? If they did not know the art, how could they teach it — how could they teach the art of purification?
If they themselves had not become light, how could they have given light to others?
If someone is darkened and sets out to guide others while still darkened, then, as it says, both will fall into a pit, into a cesspit. We have the Three Great Hierarchs, the great luminaries of the whole world. What were the Three Hierarchs? They were monks.
Yet Saint Nicholas, Saint Spyridon, and still other great hierarchs who did not become monks lived the ascetic life in the world. They lived as monks, even though they had never entered a monastery. This shows that the Orthodox faith is ascetic.
It is not a broad road; it is not the wide way followed by most heretics, who have no ascesis—no ascetic discipline—at all in the life of the faith they profess.
Even if we Christians do not undertake ascesis as we ought, or as much as we need to, our faith and our Church teach the ascetic life. The Gospel itself teaches us ascesis. The heretics read it, but they do not understand it—and they do not want to understand it.
Here is the proof: Christ says that if we look upon a person or anything else with an evil desire, we commit sin within ourselves. He teaches us that we must struggle against the thought, the gaze, and the feeling itself.
For there is an ever-watchful Eye that searches hearts and innermost thoughts. It judges our every deed, every logismos—every intrusive thought—every thought and every motive. The acts committed within the heart are known to God.
What other faith, what other church—or rather, what other sect, for let us not call them churches? There is only one Church in the world, and that is the Orthodox Church. All the others are assemblies and sectarian gatherings. What other Church has fasting, prayer, prostrations, purity, and order within married life?
What other Church has this kind of monasticism? Not Catholic monasticism, which in essence has nothing to offer. Where are the saints of the Catholic Church? Where is their monasticism, and where are the great figures it has produced through the ascetic life?
We have thousands of monks who, through ascesis, attained holiness, poured forth myrrh, received divine gifts, and so greatly glorified God. Therefore, in this world of ours, there is an urgent need for God to hear the prayers of the Holy Fathers, to send His divine illumination and His grace where they are needed, so that we may become fellow workers with the will of God and of the Holy Fathers.
God and the Holy Fathers desire monasticism to take root in this land and in this part of the world, so that it may give spiritual strength to the Church, establish her firmly, make her mighty, and make her a strong tower, ready for the battle over all that is to come in the years ahead.
years. The monasteries are refuges for every soul in need of protection and salvation. They are strongholds of Orthodoxy. They are outposts that guard the land. Wherever there is a monastery, Lord, that whole place is blessed, it is sanctified by the prayers, by the very presence of the monks and the nuns.
This will come as the faithful draw near to the monastery, to the services, and to the blessed cassock, whose very presence works miracles.
Miracles.
We see the praxis—the active ascetic life—before our eyes. We have this small beginning, these first fruits of monasticism in this part of the world. Here we have this first little monastery. It is small, but that does not matter.
A great fire can be kindled by one small match.
As for this monastery, all who have drawn near to it and all who have come into contact with it—
all who have visited it, stayed there, and seen it—have regarded it as a miracle. For the experienced nuns truly serve like spiritual mothers: they know so much that they can counsel every suffering person and give sound guidance to the young.
For example, while I was there recently, despite the winter and the difficult circumstances, people kept coming.
So many young men and women came through. And this is apart from the older people. They came simply to see the gerontissa, the spiritual mother, and to hear a few words from her. She has become their spiritual mother. Everyone respects her; even the priests bow before her, and her spiritual authority is evident.
Her word carries the weight of a spiritual father's counsel.
Simply to see these young women dressed in black and dedicated to God is a blessing; their faces shine with chastity and purity. When they chant and when they go about their duties, everything they do brings spiritual benefit. They come and consult me, and I see with what obedience they carry it out.
And if the good God is pleased that several monasteries should be founded and spread this planting throughout this part of the world, the spiritual benefit will be beyond measure. Fortunately, from the outset we have received considerable blessing and support from those in high positions, who wish to help this work. We have already begun, and we are moving forward toward a second monastery and then a third.
And so we ask for your prayers to help us, that God may grant this blessing: that the people here may live not only in Orthodoxy, but also in Orthopraxy—in the Orthodox way of life.
Orthodoxy cannot be conceived without Orthopraxy.
It is not enough simply to be called Orthodox without also living an Orthodox life.
It is not enough to confess the faith with our lips; we must also proclaim it loudly through the witness of our deeds. Deeds often speak more powerfully than words.
It is written in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers that there was once a monk, an elder, who was traveling somewhere. He was a heretic.
Night fell, however, and he was compelled to seek refuge and lodging at an Orthodox hermitage. He knew that the elder there was Orthodox, and the Orthodox elder knew that he was a heretic—and a fierce one at that. But since the heretical monk had no other choice, he asked for shelter.
He said to himself, “I will make the sign of the Cross, accept his hospitality, and that will be the end of it.” The Orthodox monk received him. And because he truly was an Orthodox monk, with the genuine love of God within him, he looked upon this heretical monk and welcomed him with great love.
He brought water and washed his feet, served him the little food he had, and prepared the best place he could for him to sleep. When morning came, the heretical monk had nothing more to say except, “Thank you, Father, for your loving hospitality. From this moment on, I am Orthodox.”
Love spoke; the deed itself spoke. If the Orthodox monk had begun with theory first, with doctrine and all the rest, the two of them might never have seen eye to eye, and the hospitality that followed would have had no such result at all. But the Orthodox monk, enlightened by the Spirit of truth, made love the first work of salvation.
And it is love that accomplishes all things, because God is love, as we know very well; and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. Our Greece is filled with monasteries. But if the monasteries did not exist—especially Mount Athos and women’s monasticism, which flourishes throughout Greece—where could you turn your eyes without seeing a monastery, a shrine, an Orthodox church, a cassock, and so many other things that edify the human person?
But sometimes abundance brings a kind of satiety.
A person becomes overfilled, and then begins to treat these things lightly.
Wonderful things.
But the Christian people here have a great thirst and hunger. They are seeking this spiritual nourishment and the fulfillment of their needs—especially the young people, who are in such great danger. How can I put it? They are prey, the spoils of both the devil and the heretics, as well as of so many other evil forces: drugs and the like, which entangle them in so many satanic systems, and we lose them.
The presence of monasticism, however, will give them great strength, great courage, fresh confidence, great hope, and great help. While I was at the monastery in Pittsburgh, there was a young woman who had been terribly persecuted and afflicted.
She found refuge there. She fell down before the Panagia, the All-Holy Theotokos, and she wept and wept and wept. And right away she felt such assurance, such relief, that she took off her three rings and hung them there before the Panagia.
This young woman had come from Greece, persecuted and afflicted, and at the monastery she experienced both fatherly and motherly love. By the grace of God, she was also helped to put her life in order. Everywhere she had gone, she had found desolation; everywhere she had gone, destruction and exploitation.
She found refuge and was saved, like a little bird—a dove grievously wounded by the hawk of sin and the devil. Among those dear little nuns she found a warm nest. The abbess embraced her, gave her life, and gave her warmth.
She went to confession; she was washed and cleansed, and she became a living person of God, filled with hope and courage.
We see the young men and women, even though many of them are already third-generation immigrants, especially among the great numbers living in the large cities and particularly in Canada. Let us bless this work with our prayers; let us pray for it and ask God to help us also—humble and unworthy as we are—to support it with all our heart. God gives us everything; we have nothing of our own.
God gives us this love, this concern, and this desire to labor, despite the difficulties, some of which you know from the past. Now we have entered into the main work itself. Pray also that we may have illumination and that, as I said, those in positions of authority may help us, so that we can work together in this great mission.
For it will determine the future of the people here. It is a unique opportunity given by God.
Satan, of course, sensed this opportunity years ago and tried by every possible means to prevent it, setting so many things in motion against it. But the things of God cannot be stopped; they can only be delayed for a time. In the end, when all is said and done, Christ triumphs.
So it was when the scribes and the Pharisees arrested the Apostles after Christ’s Resurrection. The Apostles were preaching the Lord Jesus Christ, and they arrested them and said, “Do not preach this name here again. We cannot bear to hear it; we hate it.”
Then the Apostle Peter, who had once been fearful, rose to his full stature like a lion and said:
“We will obey God, not you men. Do whatever you think best.”
Then the providence of God steps in and enlightens the teacher Gamaliel, and he takes the council aside privately and says to them: “What are you doing? What is it you are trying to stop? Think about what you are about to do. Why are you beating these men? Why are you trying to stop them? Why are you threatening them?
"Because," he says, "if their work is not according to God, it will pass, it will pass away, it will run aground. But if it is from God, you will find yourselves fighting against God, and you will not stop the work. That is why I advise you: leave these men alone and have nothing more to do with these matters." And after they had beaten the Apostles, they let them go.
The work, of course, began in Jerusalem. Through so much toil and hardship, through martyrdoms, persecutions, confessions of faith, ascesis, storms, heresies, and so much more, the Church continues courageously toward the consummation of all things, never lowering her banner.
The work of God is recognized by this: despite every difficulty, it continues sailing onward along the path to victory.
These are the few words I wished to say to you this evening, at our first meeting and as my first greeting to you. As you know, our program will continue for about fifteen to seventeen days here in Montreal and then in other regions. God willing, we will reach Toronto and the surrounding area toward the end of February and the beginning of March.
Then, by the grace of God, we will travel on to the United States, where the work will continue as well.
It continues.

Αν αυτοί δεν γίνονταν φως, πώς θα μπορούσαν να φωτίσουν;
Ποια πίστη, ποια εκκλησία, μάλλον παρασυναγωγή — ας μην τους πούμε εκκλησίες. Γιατί μία είναι η Εκκλησία στον κόσμο και αυτή είναι μόνο η Ορθόδοξη. Όλες είναι συναγωγές και παρασυναγωγές. Ποια Εκκλησία έχει τη νηστεία, έχει την προσευχή, έχει τις γονυκλισίες, έχει την καθαρότητα, έχει την τάξη μέσα στους εγγάμους;
Ποια Εκκλησία έχει αυτό το είδος του μοναχισμού; Όχι καθολικός μοναχισμός, που δεν λέει τίποτε στην ουσία. Πού είναι οι Άγιοι της Καθολικής Εκκλησίας; Πού είναι ο μοναχισμός τους να παρουσιάσει τα αναστήματα του ασκητισμού;
Τότε έρχεται η πρόνοια του Θεού και φωτίζει τον διδάσκαλο Γαμαλιήλ και τους παίρνει ιδιαιτέρως και τους λέει: «Τι κάνετε; Τι πάτε να εμποδίσετε; Σκεφτείτε τι πάτε να κάνετε. Γιατί χτυπάτε τους ανθρώπους, γιατί τους εμποδίζετε, γιατί τους απειλείτε;
