Summary

Elder Ephraim expounds Saint Paul's command to pray without ceasing and give thanks in every circumstance as continual communion with God. Christ's warning in Gethsemane and the offerings of Cain and Abel show that vigilant prayer requires faith, attentiveness, and reconciliation with the neighbor, while Moses' raised hands in the battle with Amalek prove that sustained prayer strengthens against temptation. The Neptic Fathers cultivated continual prayer through the Jesus Prayer, 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me'; Abba Arsenios, Saint Irene Chrysovalantou, and Saint Gregory Palamas show that prolonged prayer is possible for monastics and laypeople alike. Job and Saint Syncletica demonstrate that trials accepted without murmuring purify the soul, so continual prayer and thanksgiving should become lifelong practice.

This talk on prayer and thanksgiving to God was given abroad. The Apostle Paul, the mouth of Christ, left us a commandment—a spiritual commandment.

“Pray without ceasing; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” The Apostle Paul means that we must remain in continual communion with God and thank Him for all the different things that happen to us in life.

We must thank God not only for the pleasant and good things we receive from Him, but also amid temptations and tribulations, and when we lack things and are troubled by them.

Abba Isaac the Syrian says that the gratitude of the one who receives moves the giver to bestow even greater gifts.

When we thank God for whatever He gives us, we move Him—we call upon Him—to give us even more.

God does not give rest to a person who murmurs until He has chastened him.

There were ten lepers whom the Lord healed, yet only one returned and gave thanks. Christ drew attention to this. He said to the man who had been healed—or rather, to the man who returned to give thanks—“Were not ten healed? Where are the nine?” By this He offered a gentle rebuke, showing that all ten should have thanked God.

Now let us consider the first part: unceasing prayer, which the Apostle Paul commands us to maintain in our communion with God. When our Christ came to the Garden of Gethsemane and was about to proceed toward His voluntary Passion,

before He was arrested, before His sufferings began, before He ascended Golgotha and was crucified, the disciples grew drowsy. He said to the Apostle Peter, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation.

The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

“Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation.” Here it is perfectly clear that Satan throws us into temptation when we are not living in prayer. In other words, the devil first takes our prayer away, and then he finds us without a foundation, he finds us without a weapon, he finds us without any safety — and so he pushes us and brings us crashing down.

Therefore, if we diligently attend to prayer, we shall always remain as safe as possible. We shall have a weapon in our hands: the name of Christ. With this weapon we shall pursue and drive away our enemy, the devil.

The tempter fears nothing as much as prayer. Prayer is the communion of the human person with God. It is our communion with the source of life. God is the source of life and of every blessing.

The person who communes with Him through prayer

continually draws this blessedness into himself.

Of course, we do not always draw this blessedness into ourselves; that is, we do not always feel the grace of God when we pray. This is because the enemy assails us, and our attention wanders during prayer. He seizes our nous, our spiritual intellect, and sends it roaming throughout the whole world.

The world asks only that we not draw near to God at all. But we must persevere and remain steadfast in prayer; we must struggle and strive to drive away the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts, and call upon God to help our nous, our spiritual intellect, remain attentive to the words we utter in prayer, so that our prayer may take the place

of Abel's, because Cain's offering was not accepted by God. The reason it was not accepted is that Cain did not offer the choicest of what he had gained; instead he took from the heap, without looking carefully at what was in it, and made that his sacrifice.

Abel, however, chose the best and finest things and offered them, and so his offering was accepted.

If we are to receive an answer like the acceptance of Abel’s sacrifice, our prayer must be pure. Our prayer will not be pure if we harbor anything against our neighbor. We must have neither coldness, nor hatred, nor malice, nor anything against another person.

We must also believe completely that God is present everywhere. God is within the human person, and the human person is within God.

of God; that we breathe God in and breathe God out; that no one is closer to man than God; and therefore, however alone we may be, we shall always be in the presence of God’s invisible nature. We must therefore believe, when we pray by ourselves, that we are alone with God and with no one else. In this way, we must shut out distraction, which carries away the nous, the spiritual intellect, and sets it wandering.

and proclaims Him everywhere.

Prayer—pure prayer—is all-powerful; it possesses tremendous strength. We see proof of this when the Israelites departed from Egypt and journeyed through the wilderness. God went before them: by day He covered them with a cloud, and by night He gave them light with a pillar of fire, showing them the way to the Promised Land.

They encountered various enemies, foreign nations that had no faith.

At one point, the army of Israel entered into battle with Amalek—the king of that nation was called Amalek—and Moses went up the mountain to watch the battle, raising his hands in the form of a cross.

As long as he held them in the form of the Cross, the Israelites prevailed. But when he grew tired and lowered his hands, the foreign army prevailed.

That is why Aaron and another man held up Moses' hands while he prayed, and the more he prayed, the more he prevailed, and the battle turned in the Israelites' favor.

When we hold fast to prayer, we shall always be victorious. We shall overcome temptations; we shall overcome the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts; and our life will be watchful. If prayer grows weak, the effects on our soul are immediate. Negligence and spiritual sloth take hold of us, along with logismoi, wandering thoughts, and surrender to temptations.

And so we come to understand that it was prayer that strengthened us to stand firm.

We see this in the Neptic Fathers of our Church, especially, as we know, those of the desert. The chief concern of their lives was to remain in continual and unbroken communion with God.

They never ceased praying. They taught us a very short prayer that is like an atomic bomb against the devil: the name of Christ.

The name of Christ is what utterly defeats the devil. There is no Mystery that is celebrated except in the name of Christ.

The prayer began with the Holy Apostles. The Fathers received it and formed it into the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.”

This prayer is filled with the grace of God. The name of Christ is not like our own names, which are ordinary, empty, and powerless. The name of Christ contains the fullness of divine grace. Whoever calls upon the name of Christ becomes a partaker of the gifts of Christ.

In those days the ascetics did not have books as we do today. How, then, could they spend night and day alone in the desert? Their book and their university were the whole creation, prayer, and theoria—divine contemplation.

At one moment prayer, and at another theoria, was their spiritual delight.

Prayer strengthened theoria, and theoria strengthened prayer.

They prayed for hours upon hours without growing tired at all. Indeed, they remained in continual communion with the source of life. And as they received life within themselves—the life of Christ, the life of the Angels, the life of the world to come—they lived as though they were in Paradise.

We see Abba Arsenios, who would shut himself in his cell at sunset and raise his hands in prayer. He would lower them only the next day, when the sun was already burning upon his face.

Where was the nous—the spiritual intellect—of Abba Arsenios throughout the whole night? Why did his hands not grow weary and fall, but remain raised in the form of a cross? Surely the grace of God sustained him.

Abba Arsenios knew scarcely anyone, and yet he himself was known—renowned and venerated as a holy man in the hearts of the entire Orthodox world.

Why, then, did all this become known—his name, his memory, and everything about him? It was from God. Because he loved God so deeply, God spread his name throughout the whole world.

Among the women, too, we have our great venerable Saint Irene Chrysovalantou. She imitated Abba Arsenios and followed closely in his footsteps. Though she had a monastery and was its abbess, she still found time to keep vigil throughout the night, raising her hands on high and not lowering them until God brought the dawn.

Then some power would lower them for her, and when her arms came down and her joints struck together, the sound could be heard throughout the monastery.

Proof that the Saint’s sacrifice and willing offering were so pleasing to God is that the devil once became so enraged with her that he set her on fire in an attempt to burn her—and he attempted this just as an angel was about to crown her with a heavenly crown.

A woman’s nature may be weak, yet when it is grafted into the power of Christ, it becomes strong.

We have countless ascetics who, through prayer, attained very great spiritual heights. We also have one from more recent times, Saint Gregory Palamas. He is the great teacher of noetic prayer.

There was once an elderly monk named Arsenios.

One day he said to Gregory, his teacher, that the command “pray without ceasing” was very difficult to fulfill. “As for us monks, priests, and the rest, let us suppose that we can train ourselves in the praxis, the active ascetic life, of noetic prayer.

But how can laypeople, with so many responsibilities, with families, children, and all the rest, put this command of the Apostle Paul into practice?” Saint Gregory told him, “It is impossible for something that God inspires and commands through the Apostle not to be attainable.”

“It simply requires effort.” But the elderly monk continued to argue and would not be persuaded. Saint Gregory, wishing to avoid contention, withdrew, and the discussion ended. When Arsenios returned to his cell, an angel of God appeared to him and said, “Why do you contradict Saint Gregory? Everything Saint Gregory says is entirely correct.”

He immediately went and asked forgiveness. Saint Gregory Palamas would remain enclosed in his cell from Sunday evening until Saturday morning, praying night and day without going outside at all. When he came out on Saturday to spend Saturday and Sunday with his disciples, his face shone like the sun. This means that through prayer he received the Holy Spirit and entered into spiritual theoria, into divine vision and contemplation, and into theological contemplation.

In this way he was initiated into the highest mysteries of theology, and this is why he shone so brightly. This proves how great and beautiful prayer is, beyond every other virtue. If we have afflictions, sorrows, or temptations, and we kneel and pray fervently, God will give us an answer.

When we are troubled by logismoi, by intrusive thoughts, or when the devil presses upon us, let us give ourselves to prayer—to the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” When we repeat this prayer day and night, wherever we may be, God’s help will be the answer.

We may be going to work, walking along the road, riding on the bus, driving in the car—wherever we are, we can pray with our nous, our spiritual intellect.

From home to work, we can say the Jesus Prayer hundreds of times. If we do not pray, think how much harm we will have done to ourselves.

When we rise from sleep to go to work or wherever we are needed, we must immediately begin saying the Jesus Prayer with our nous. And we should know that God’s blessing will remain with us throughout the day. A person who does not pray is dead. A person who prays has life within him, and that life is the life of God.

In the same way, when we receive Holy Communion and partake of the Body and Blood of Christ, we receive life within ourselves; we receive the Lord Himself. He comes to dwell within us.

We become one with Christ. The same thing happens through prayer. The human heart is a temple of the Holy Spirit, because we received the grace of the Holy Spirit at our Baptism. Therefore, when we pray, we revive and renew that grace within us.

It is like blowing on coals to make them burn. When only a spark remains and the coals are about to go out, we blow and keep blowing until they kindle and all the coals become fire again. In the same way, through our sins, the fire of the Holy Spirit within us gradually fades, and only a spark remains. That spark never abandons a person, except through exceedingly grave sins.

When we continually fan that ray, that spark, through prayer and metanoia—through repentance—the fullness of the grace of the Holy Spirit is kindled once again. Then the person is renewed and becomes a new person once more.

This is the first part of the Apostle Paul’s command. The second, as we have said, is thanksgiving.

We know the story of Job and all that happened to him. The much-suffering Job was the most righteous man of his time, as well as the wealthiest and the most God-fearing.

As long as he had not been tested by God, his name had not become so widely known.

From the moment temptations began to assail him, in accordance with God’s will and by His permission, Job was raised to a position of distinction.

The devil saw that God intended good for Job, and he was filled with envy; and one day he came and stood before God. When God saw him standing there, He says to him: “Where have you been?” “I have gone to and fro about the earth, and walked up and down under heaven, and here I am,” he says — “I have roamed the whole world, and now I am here.”

God said to the devil, “Have you seen that there is no one else in the world like My child Job?” “I have,” he replied. “Of course he is like that, since You have given him so many blessings. But take them away from him, and then we shall see whether he remains steadfast in his fear of God.”

He says to him: “Behold, I leave him in your hands — put him to the test.” And the very next day his whole estate is destroyed. Word came to him that robbers had carried off his livestock and everything else, that the servants who worked for him had been killed — and that was that.

When he heard this, he said, “God gave, and God has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

The devil appeared before God again, and God said to him, “Did you see that Job glorified Me? Did you see that he did not murmur? Did you see that he did not blaspheme Me?” “Of course,” the devil replied. “You have still left him his children and his wife. How could he not bless You?”

“Then strike his children as well,” God said. So the devil caused an earthquake at the house, and Job’s five children were killed.

When Job learned that an earthquake had struck and that his children had been killed while they were feasting together,

he said once again, “God gave, and God has taken away. Blessed be the name of God.”

The devil appeared once more, and God said to him, “What now? Did Job, My child, murmur?” “No,” he answered, “he did not murmur, because he still has his health. Strike his health as well—only do not touch his mind, his nous.”

The very next day Job is covered with leprosy, and his whole body becomes one single open sore.

He arose and went outside the city. There he sat, covered with sores, scraping his wounds with a shard of pottery.

His wife came to him and said, “Where are your good works now? Where is your righteousness? Where is your God?”

“Curse God,” she says, “so that He may strike you dead and you may be delivered from your sufferings.” Job answers her, “You have spoken like a foolish woman, like a senseless woman with no understanding. When God gave us all these things, was He good, but now that He is testing us, is He evil? Blessed be the name of God.” Then his friends, the kings, come to him, and instead of comforting him, they begin to say, “If you were not a sinner, if you had not done evil deeds, God would not be punishing you.” And that became yet another wound.

He tried to answer them and withstand their accusations. He did withstand them, but, as we have said, he was human.

When our Christ was ascending Golgotha, He fell to His knees.

He wished to show us that a human being may fall to his knees, but must not remain there. He must rise, ask for God’s help, and continue on his way. Job began to buckle under the burden, because nothing in his life had been left standing.

Job did not have the light that we have. He did not have the light of Christ; he did not have God crucified before his eyes; he had no examples—he had nothing. With simple faith in the One who fashioned and created him, he faced all these things, while we, with all that has been given to us, cannot face even a single temptation.

As soon as God saw that Job was beginning to waver, He appeared to him and reproved him. In the end, He told him, “This is why I tested you and I afflicted you: to reveal you as a Saint and to make you a shining example for all generations.”

Then He restored his health, gave him children again, added years to his life, and gave him three times as much as before. Let us be obedient, humble our souls, and give thanks to Him, because God never desires harm for anyone.

Through the hardship He permits, through tribulation and toil, He desires to bestow His blessings upon us.

“For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and He scourges every son whom He receives.” And this brief affliction prepares for us an eternal weight of glory. He chastens us a little so that He may bestow infinite blessings upon us. Saint Syncletica was the abbess of a large monastery. She was a teacher and a wise woman, yet the Lord also tested her greatly.

He gave her tuberculosis of the larynx.. Her mouth—the very mouth that had continually proclaimed the Word of God—had rotted away.

Her wound gave off a terrible stench. The sisters could not attend to her. They burned large quantities of incense so that they could approach her for a few minutes and offer her a little help. At first she preached with words; in the midst of her suffering, she preached a silent but very powerful sermon of patient endurance.

Pombounis

Therefore, when we understand that it is God’s will to work out our eternal salvation through tribulations,

When things are going well for us, if we believe this completely and make it part of our deepest conviction, then naturally we are granted great patient endurance. We go to the hospital and endure so much medical treatment—operations and many other things that we all know about. We endure patiently and do not become indignant with the doctor because he is causing us pain.

we give thanks to the Lord when He confines us indoors, when He binds us to a bed, and when He deprives us of food, freedom, and so many other things. We give thanks to Him inwardly—and especially once we have recovered.

So too we must always give thanks to the Lord, the Physician of our souls and bodies. When we undergo trials, they always aim at the healing of the soul, if only we understand this. When we become physically ill and later recover, having first endured whatever we had to pass through, we certainly feel relief in our souls and, very often, an abundance of God’s grace. This means that God also responds to us through bodily trials.

Many souls are tested very severely before they die. They pass through a grave and painful illness. God does not desire anyone to suffer, but this lies within His justice.

According to the measure of a person’s toil, so will be the measure of the reward he receives.

In the Mystery.

Therefore, we must never condemn anyone when we see that person undergoing a trial before death.

Chastening, pain, and perhaps even many years spent bedridden bring about the refining of the soul.

A person is refined and cleansed, passing through that process from which he emerges completely purified.

Many Saints passed through this trial despite their holiness. If holy people passed through this furnace,

how much more do we, who are sinners, need it?

It is better to pay our debt here, in this world, than in the next.

Here, however much we may suffer, it is temporary, while the benefit will be eternal.

We must avoid murmuring at all costs. Murmuring is a very great evil. God is greatly pleased when He puts a person to the test and sees a person accept it as the will of God and give thanks to Him.

There is no more beautiful offering than this.

On the one hand, let us pray continually; on the other, let us offer unending thanksgiving to God from our hearts. Whatever we do—even when we receive something to eat—let thanksgiving rise continually from within us to God.

And the more we thank Him, the more richly He will give us all that we need. Let us make it the concern of our lives always to remain in prayer. As we said at the beginning of this homily, prayer will protect us from every temptation.

Let us pray continually and without ceasing, and in the same way let us continually thank Him. Then we shall be pleasing to God and be counted worthy of His Kingdom.

When He distributed the tongues of fire, He called all to unity; and with one accord we glorify the All-Holy Spirit. Amen. Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Έρχεται η γυναίκα του και του λέει: «Πού είναι τα καλά σου έργα; Πού είναι οι δικαιοσύνες σου; Πού είναι ο Θεός σου;
