Summary
Speaking as Great Lent opens, Dimitrios Panagopoulos calls his hearers to inward reflection and to peace with God and neighbour before prayer or almsgiving can bear fruit. Because every person sins in word, deed, and thought, the Church holds out the merciful mystery of repentance and confession as the way back into communion. Faith is shown in life rather than in words, and each fall is to be followed by rising again. Both the Forerunner and Christ proclaim repentance as the answer to the nearness of the Kingdom (Matthew 3:2; 4:17). Repentance is the inward decision to change; confession lays that decision before God through the priest, to whom the risen Lord entrusted the authority to forgive or retain sins (John 20:19-23). Fasting, almsgiving, and seasonal attendance cannot replace conversion, so each believer needs a discerning spiritual father and complete honesty.
