Summary
Resuming a verse-by-verse exposition at Psalm 50:12, Panagopoulos explains that sin, being foreign to human nature, extinguishes gladness and leaves conscience as an unrelenting accuser. David’s desired salvation is prophetically Christ, whose blood redeems where personal righteousness cannot. The plea that the Holy Spirit not depart leads to a defense of ordained ministry: personal sin does not annul sacramental office, and the faithful must not sever themselves from the clergy through scandal. A “guiding Spirit” denotes grace governing flesh and thought, aided by obedience to a spiritual father rather than confidence in private opinion. David’s promise to instruct transgressors becomes every believer’s duty, fulfilled through speech, a discreetly offered book, or an exemplary life. With the bruised reed of Matthew 12:20, Christ is shown restoring even the gravely wounded soul.

And tonight, by the grace of the Lord, we will continue the four other talks that had to do with David's fall and with Psalm 50 — the psalm this prophet left us afterwards, and which our holy Church has judged to be so weighty that she repeats it daily and in almost every service.
And I have said it repeatedly, over and over: we who know it by heart do not know what it is saying on the inside. So with the Lord's help and the intercessions of the Prophet, let us take up this subject again, going on from where we stopped the other day, those of us who were together.
From my notes here I see that we are at verse 12 of Psalm 50. Specifically, at the point where he begs God, saying to Him: Restore to me the joy of Your salvation. In other words, he had lost that joy because of sin.
Sin is something foreign to us. It is not possible for a person to sin and feel no disturbance inside. Of course, we get used to it, the way a drug addict does. Each of us ought to remember what it was like when we first began to sin: how we felt, what inner conviction, what witness and what unease came to us from our conscience.
The conscience — the one that always reminds a man, it is not lawful for you, what you are doing is not permitted to you. It makes a noise in him, it reproves him, and the man has no calm and no inner stillness. He no longer has joy.
A darkness, a black condition, a daily reproof, night and day, and he cannot shake it off. Because a companion he can leave behind, another temptation he can leave behind. But the one bound up with his own conscience, that he cannot.
A man cannot get rid of his conscience. If the world does not suit him, he shuts the door. If so-and-so does not suit him, he hangs up the phone. If, if — yes; but his conscience a man cannot throw out.
So he asks, as though saying to Him: I have repented. Restore to me, then, once more the joy of Your salvation. And this salvation, in the broadest sense, is Christ Himself. Even though the Saint is speaking a thousand years before Christ, still it is Christ Himself.
Man's salvation, and the salvation God sent into the world, is Christ Himself. It is as though he is asking for this prophetically, because David too was saved through Christ. He was not saved by himself, he was not saved by his own righteousness, because no man in the Old Testament was saved that way.
All the souls that were found in the grave and received the preaching of Christ and of John, who went down into Hades, were made alive.
And in Hades, as our Church reminds us when it says, “and upon those in the tombs bestowing life,” for He gave them life there. Here, then, amid all his other petitions, he implores Him: “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.” This refers to sin, and to the repose, inner stillness, and peace of the human soul. But concerning the gift of the Holy Spirit, he did not use the same words, “Restore to me”; he said, “the Spirit.”
Take not Your Holy Spirit from me. God had not taken it from him, even though he had sinned. You see, the divine uncreated energies of God were at work then and are at work now. Many sinful men do not lose the gift of grace, and especially when they stand within the ranks of the clergy.
It is not lost through sin; it is not taken away. So never be scandalized by this, and never keep away from clergy — and I do not mean only those who are accused unjustly, but even those whom you yourselves see sinning. Let it be as though nothing has happened, as far as you are concerned.
That priest will always have the grace to sanctify you, so long as you are willing to go to him, so long as you are willing to receive. The priesthood itself does not sin. The divine Chrysostom says: «God does not ordain all men, but He works through all of them» — that is, not every priest is of God's own choosing, yet God still acts through every one of them.
And I insist on this point, because the Christian needs to be given light on it. And especially in our days, because the days we are passing through are very evil days; they are looking to wipe out even what little is left to us.
And I told you one evening, while I was speaking on another subject, what Agathangelos said. Agathangelos writes in the year 1200, and he writes prophetically about Germany and laments over her, because she drove out the clergy. He foresaw the clergy; he foresaw Protestantism, which would strip away the clergy. And he writes prophetically and says: Woe to you, Germany, because you dismissed the clergy, you pushed them out of the way, and in doing so you stopped having communication with Heaven.
The clergy, whether we want it so or not, my beloved, are the link that joins earth to heaven. There's no use thrashing about in protest, no matter what we do. They are the bridge, whether we like it or not.
May it be a bridge of gold, may it be of pure gold, may it be of stone, of iron and so on — but even if it is only a rope ladder, even if it is rusted, let us still use it. There, concerning the prophetic gift, he said: do not take it away from me, I beg You. And God left the prophetic gift with him.
Here, though, it is the joy, the thrill of his soul, that he asks Him to give back. He had been shaken; he does not feel well, even though he had received the assurance that the Lord has put away your sin. Even so, he had no rest.
And this is what he is begging for. And this is something we too can have, and it happens to many people — especially to people who have served long prison sentences for serious crimes. We often hear them say, 'I need to go and make a clean confession.' And they know things that they have already confessed; even so, they feel a kind of insecurity. Even though they confessed, even though they heard that they are forgiven, deep inside they still feel a sorrow over something they did not do rightly.
Something similar happens in this case too. And the more a man is cleansed and draws near to God, the more he feels guilty about the things he has done, even though they have already been forgiven him.
This is how the soul is put together. This is the condition of a human being. And a person wants — how shall I put it — signatures and seals from both of God's hands before he can settle down and be at peace. And so, even though he had received that assurance from Nathan the Prophet, that "the Lord has put away your sin" — that is, "He has forgiven it" — he still went on feeling it, quite apart from the punishment he was going to undergo.
The child will die, and so on. This illegitimate child of yours will die, so that the world may not see it and blaspheme God. And yet, even after this, David himself does not feel at peace within, and he pleads with God, saying, “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.”
And with a guiding Spirit uphold me. With a guiding Spirit uphold me. That is, a guiding spirit is someone who governs, who presides, who directs. That is what he is asking for here: a special grace of the Holy Spirit to take his flesh and his own will firmly in hand.
Because it was in his weakness that he did what he did. And from this it follows, for us as well, that a person must never put his trust in his own strength. Not 'I will…', but 'by the grace of the Lord I will…'. A person must never rest confident in his own powers.
Here the Prophet is asking for a special grace from God: give me a guiding grace. Someone to take charge of me and govern me, to direct my flesh and my thoughts. And this really does exist; if you read about the gifts of the Holy Spirit you will find this very phrase, a guiding spirit.
Because man wavers back and forth. The flesh, working together with the devil, is a powerful weapon against the human soul.
We see an example of this not only in the Fall itself but also in the events of the Son. There too Satan, working together with Eve,
attacked Adam and won him over to their side. And in the case of Job, although Satan had freedom to kill Job's wife, he did not kill her; he calculated, he kept her, and through her he attacked Job afterwards.
The power of the flesh is no small thing, especially when it joins forces with Satan. The flesh in itself is neither good nor evil. It depends on how it is used, on who is leading it, and on what strength there is in the soul that the flesh carries within it.
So here the Saint saw the robber within himself, and he asks: not to me — give me, send me, grant me a strength, a spirit to take charge of me, to govern me. I want a guide. I want someone over me.
And all those who have a spiritual guide feel safe, because they are always sheltered, always guarded, always led by the judgment of their spiritual father. They take their spiritual father's will as their own — do this, do that — as though it came from God.
And they feel such a strength that if he told them, throw yourselves into the sea, they would throw themselves into the sea with their spiritual father's blessing. But many of us, in our pride or in our ignorance, do not have this grace, and so we are pushed and pulled about, giving weight to our own opinion, which ninety-nine percent of the time is the influence of Satan.
A person has no measure, no touchstone by which to discern where he stands. That is why he needs to be covered under an umbrella — what we call a spiritual father, a man of discernment — so that he can stand firm and be guided rightly.
So here the Saint asks for this special grace from God, that He give him a guiding spirit. Uphold me — why? Do you not see that I have fallen? Not simply that I have fallen, but that I have been crushed? Because David's falls are not ordinary ones. It was not I who fell, it was not any one of us who fell; a prophet fell, a king fell. David has two gifts: he has the royal anointing and the prophetic anointing.
It is not the same thing. The offence does not have the same weight in God's eyes when it is mine or yours as when it is David's. It depends on who falls. And this man who has now been crushed asks God to govern him, to take charge of him.
Because there really are special strengths, you should know, that are given by the grace of the Holy Spirit to the soul, so that the soul can stand.
You see how the enemy threatens us: you will never manage this, you will never cut that off, that bed of yours will not easily be pulled down, this cunning of yours, this easy way of making money — it is not easy for a person to get free of it.
That is exactly why we ask God for the strength to succeed where we ourselves cannot. So in this case he leaves a lesson for us too. We ask God, His mighty hand as it is called, to lead us; we ask in our prayer that He go before us; we ask that our thoughts be placed under His scrutiny — and then we get an answer we can almost touch, that it is truly He who countersigns the matter, and so we go ahead and do it.
Because many people say, that man is illumined, that woman is illumined, he has the Holy Spirit, whatever he tells you, do it — and that is a mistake.
Do not be quick to hand out certificates; do not be quick to believe this one and that one. You need an inner assurance that it is so. If you do not have that inner assurance yourself, do not rush. Keep asking. Keep entreating. Not praying — entreating. We do not frame a formal prayer to Christ. Supplication. We are in no position to present ourselves and pray. Supplication.
We should feel small before Him, and we should plead with Him. Then this humility, this crushed and broken heart, is exactly what makes us of use in the eyes of God. And God has countless ways of doing it: He can light up a red light for us and tell us no, and He can light up a green light for us and tell us go ahead, you are free. He has the power to do it.
And so from this He leaves us the lesson that we are prone to fall, and that unless we have the special grace of the Holy Spirit which He asked for, it is not easy for us to stand firm. After all, falls are so easy that even Paul was alarmed and said, “Take heed, for let him who thinks he stands beware lest he fall.”
It is easy for a man to fall in a fraction of a second. And Satan, who is a craftsman at this, a person of eight thousand years with enormous experience, as you can well understand, you can see what he is able to do to a man and how he can bring him down.
Moving on to verse thirteen, he speaks and he sets out a condition. If You give me a guiding Spirit and I am strengthened, then: I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall return unto You. Here is another obligation that a person ought to feel.
The grace given to a person—this spiritual treasure, this gift—is not given for that person alone, but also for all those who will cross their path. People do great harm to themselves, and more broadly to their fellow human beings, when they do not prepare themselves and offer themselves to God, so that He may make use of them and, through them, save others by enlightening them.
It is not enough for me to come to know God; I must give myself over to God with humility, in such a way that God can use me to help others as well. Paul, remember what he wrote to Timothy: these things I am telling you, do not keep them shut up inside you, do not hide the talent, do not lock it away within yourself.
Commit them to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Do not keep them; tell them to someone else as well. And that person will tell them to someone else. And it is in this way that the good news of the Gospel of God is spread.
So here David takes on a responsibility in exchange for what he is asking. If You strengthen me with a guiding Spirit, I will be steadied. And I will steady someone else; I promise You that. So help me to stand. This is what he is saying, and it fits together in sequence. Someone might say, can I really do that? What could I hold on to, and what could I do? Well, if you yourself take hold of the rock, of the quay, of the rock of ages, then you can also hold someone else close to you. You have seen whole ocean liners; they cannot hold their position unless they take a line ashore and tie themselves to the quay. That is how they are made fast.
And the same goes for small boats, and for other vessels of various kinds; that is how they hold on from the shore and secure themselves. Of course they also drop the anchor into the sea. The Christian, though, does not drop his anchor downward; he casts it upward.
Because that is what Paul says: we have our anchor in heaven. He does not drop it down; the ship does not drop its anchor into the depths either,
the anchor—just as we must not cast the anchor of our security into ourselves. We must hold fast to Him and draw our strength from Him. If, then, you keep even one little boat tied to the rock, another boat can be tied alongside it, and then another, and still another. In a certain sense, that is how this matter works as well. It is an obligation we have toward others, a treasure God gives us not to bury, not to keep for ourselves, nor to...
so that we may make use of it for gain, for spreading the word and for the salvation of other souls. A person ought to feel this obligation inside him: what he has, he must give outward, put it into circulation, let it multiply.
And at the same time he ought to feel guilt if the gift was given to him and he left it and let it stagnate. Here David asks: give it to me, and I will teach transgressors Your ways. Those who live outside the law, who have wandered off the right road, those transgressors are the ones I will show the way to.
But give me this Spirit, so that I can be steadied, and so that I can pass it on and hold someone else up as well. And the ungodly shall return unto You. Let me help the ungodly become godly, as we were saying.
I remember that there's a story connected with this psalm. When Saint Nectarios was a little boy, his grandmother would hold him in her arms and they would pray together, and she would say this Fiftieth Psalm. And when she reached this particular point, little Anastasios, as he was then, would raise his little hand — like this — and cover her mouth, and he would say it himself: "I will teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to Thee." It was as if he were making a prophecy — and that is exactly how it turned out. Hold on to that, if you like.
Of course, not everyone is fit to teach,
so people say. To preach is not for everyone; to teach is for everyone. It is one thing to come up here and raise your voice and fill the air with words. It is quite another to teach by your life, by the way you behave. The one is very different from the other.
It is not simply a matter of speaking, of standing up. I have no gift of speech. I cannot speak. I do not have the intellect to hold all this in my head and then mount a whole campaign, to carry it out to the world and keep two people there, if not standing then at least seated, listening to me.
But I can teach by my life. Our life ought to be an open letter, one that anyone can read at any moment. Our own life, and sadly the life of many religious people, is not like that. It cannot bear publicity; it cannot bear being exposed.
And so, when a person sees more than he hears, and has moved from a faith that comes by hearing to a faith that comes by seeing, then what happens? He stands guilty before that man. He is guilty.
The world has had its fill of words. It wants to see deeds. This life that you preach, that you profess, are you living it? And when you live it, then he will follow you. And then he will understand that what Christianity proclaims really can be achieved.
So there is a real need here. Now, when it comes to teaching someone else, or passing on to someone else truths that you cannot convey out of your own resources, there are always many ways. You can pass the truth on by preaching to another, that is, by teaching another, by reminding another, and also through something in print.
You can buy a book that suits someone exactly, and send it to them anonymously. Not, "Hey, read this!" No.
No, my dear, read this. No—send it anonymously, without even signing it; send it anonymously. Nowadays, with the means available, you can get a recording of a spiritual talk and send it anonymously to someone. Out of pride, he may not read it; he may tear it up or throw it away somewhere. But the time will come when someone else will pick it up. Nothing is ever wasted. And if someone sends the Gospels back, send them to him again.
You never know when that soul will finally yield. So you have to bombard it beautifully. And when you are about to send it, kneel down and say a prayer before you go to post it, before you put it in the mail.
Lord, take it Yourself and carry it there, I beg You. Let Your Holy Spirit go on ahead and speak good things to those souls I am sending it for. It is not mine. I have no eloquence of my own. I have five drachmas. I will go without a sweet, I will not eat it. I will not buy a bread ring today. I will not buy this or that. And I will send it, so as to teach, so as to pass on to others words that I myself do not even know.
If you heard that a single copy of the Scriptures went round to ninety-five houses in one village, because there was no other copy there, what would you say? That the village ought to have had ninety-five copies. And yet one single copy made that whole round. Because there were no others. People are thirsty, and today above all there is a real need for this to be put into practice.
There are many people living on lawless paths simply because there is no one there to take them by the hand. There is no one to be found to guide them. Today a blind man got off in front of me at the bus stop. He could not see, and he was walking straight through the water, in the gutter.
The man was walking right through the drainage channel, stepping into the water as he went. He could not see, and he kept walking through the water. So I went over and spoke to him. I said, “Excuse me, please give me your hand so I can help you up. You are walking in the water.”
"Thank you very much," he says to me. Now suppose I go to somebody else, somebody who is walking through the mire, just to have a word with him, to tell him. He will curse me out on top of it. His pride may not let him admit it.
But later on it will convict him, he will remember it, the Holy Spirit will do the work. My obligation is to sow; God will send the rain, God will bring the spring, and I will do the rest. But we hold back — who am I? That is the priests' job, that is the preachers' job. You understand?
So let us keep this in mind, what he says here: I will teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shall return to Thee. The next verse is in much the same spirit, the fourteenth verse of the same psalm.
Here he says this: Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God, the God of my salvation. If you notice, in many places he says God, God, the God of my salvation. That is, he presents himself before Him utterly crushed. He has given offence, he feels guilty, and plainly he is ashamed to lift his eyes to heaven.
Clearly, 'Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God' — he means the murders. Generally speaking, when we talk about blood that has been shed, it cries out, it shouts. Just as God said to Cain: 'Your brother's blood is crying out before me.' His blood cries out, it demands vengeance, as people put it. So he admits, then, that he shed innocent blood.
"Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God." And he is asking not to be left standing at the bare letter of it. God has put away your sin. Yes, but I want more than that: deliver me, cleanse me, cleanse me, from blood-guiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation. Here again the words are prophetic, spoken about Christ, because the only one who cleanses us from every sin is Christ, through His blood. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.
The blood of goats and calves does not cleanse us from all sin. Quite the opposite. It is the blood of Christ that saves — God's salvation for man comes through Jesus. And so once again he is speaking about this very subject.
And he speaks from the heart: O God, my God — a kind of pleading that overflows its measure. When a man is crushed, that is how he comes before God. He does not come with pride, dry and cold, the way so many of us come.
We simply do our duty; we read Compline without shedding a tear, we read Matins. Or we say a set of the Salutations, a portion of it, but with no feeling, with no real sense of our guilt.
In any case, we must know that it is the blood of Jesus that cleanses us. There David asks God, through salvation, to cleanse him from the blood he had shed—the innocent blood of that holy man—and, in cleansing him from that blood...
From the blood, granting him a governing spirit, as you heard mentioned earlier. And when God teaches him what He wills, then his tongue will be loosed: “My tongue shall rejoice in Your righteousness.” My tongue will be opened—but we also say, “his heart rejoices.” Otherwise, the tongue will not be able to speak beautifully and well.
Good feelings toward God — if they do not well up on their own from within, then they have to come from somewhere. "My tongue shall rejoice in Thy righteousness." That is to say: my tongue will be made glad at the good news of Thy righteousness, O Lord.
A man is set free and a man rejoices when he is acquitted, when the sentence is lifted, when the sin, the wrong, is taken out of the way. And he asks to be given that assurance, because whoever is not set free will not be justified; he has to be set free in order to be justified.
When a person is baptised, at one moment the priest says: You have been baptised, you have been chrismated, you have been sanctified, you have been justified.
What does it mean, you have been justified? He had been unjustly put to death because of the Fall, because of ancestral sin. He himself had not sinned, since he had not lived long enough to sin. Unjustly, in that case, he bore death upon himself. He is called the drakos or the drakoula.
Now he has been justified.
So the One who justifies the ungodly, as Paul says elsewhere, is Christ — and it is the strangest thing of all.
We human beings justify only the godly, and we condemn the ungodly. Christ justifies even the ungodly, so long as the man wants it, so long as his intention is good. Him too He justifies. He puts him to good use. He lifts him out of the dunghill, He raises up the poor man, He brings him up.
There is a passage in the Old Testament which the New Testament also quotes, and you will find it in the twelfth chapter of Matthew, if I remember rightly: a bruised reed He shall not break, and smoking flax He shall not quench — smoking flax He shall not quench — until He brings it through to victory.
And what is this, do you know? It is the soul of man. Imagine a reed lying in the road, and a car has gone over it, or a cart. Can you go and take hold of that reed and set it upright again? It will not stand. It will snap.
Suppose the soul is in such a wretched state, as crushed as that reed — a bruised reed and smoking flax — and suppose it is fouled by sins, carrying such a stench from sin that the very sight of that soul catches you in the throat. It is like what happens in the village with the oil lamps: the flame has gone out, and all that is left is that charred wick, and it gives off an acrid smoke that catches you in the throat.
Even if a man's soul is as filthy as that, He will bring it through to victory. He does not put it out. He will go and breathe on it in His own way, through the Holy Spirit, and He will bring that soul back to life, and it will be made new again, and it will be counted worthy.
That is the sort of thing God is saying to us here.
And so, I say, a person rejoices; an inner joy takes root within him, and he is set free when he understands and feels that the matter of his sins has been put in order, that his case has been settled. How would a man condemned to die feel if he learned that he had been granted a pardon?
How does he feel? Does he feel badly? Or is he ready to jump out of the window for sheer joy? Something like that. And that is merely human, merely of the flesh, not spiritual. But no joy, no sorrow, no pang of conscience can a man feel in the measure he ought to feel it, unless the grace of God shows him either his own filth or his own restoration.
The only One who can show a man exactly where he stands, the true condition of his soul's health, is Christ. That is why in the service of the Doxology we say: In Thy light shall we see light.
A man can understand nothing — neither his own guilt, nor his own position, nor whether he is standing well — on his own. So let him always pray in humility and ask Christ to arrange everything that follows.
As for himself, let him want to see only his own falls. Whatever is said to be good in him is not good as coming from him. Because it is good through the Lord, it is through the Holy Spirit. He has no claim on it.
It is only by grace that God will credit it to his wages tomorrow. These are lofty matters, and most of us have not reached them yet, because we stop at the outward form of Christianity and not at its essence, at the praxis of Christianity, the active ascetic life.
Moving on to the fifteenth verse of the same Psalm, he says to the Lord again: O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Thy praise.
Perhaps it has two aspects. Open my mouth, so that I may sing Your praises and glorify You. I do not know what to say. Should I use the words I say elsewhere? “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and let all that is within me bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” Or the words, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord”? Broadly speaking, this is how it is interpreted.
This has two sides to it.
Then comes his joy when he realizes that the Lord has now cleansed him. But there is another aspect as well: “O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Your praise.” We too can apply this to ourselves, asking the Lord to open our mouths so that we may speak the truth wherever it needs to be spoken, because we must confess that…
This is true. Many people are not equipped to hold their own in a discussion with a heretic, a dissenter, or whoever it may be. Yet circumstances sometimes unfold in such a way that they find themselves drawn into such a discussion.
They found themselves somewhere together, words were spoken, he took a position, he answered, and he completely overthrew the others, or their arguments, and everyone was amazed. But if you ask the man himself afterwards, what did you say, can you tell me? — he cannot remember what he said. What happened in that case?
He opened his mouth; the Lord spoke, the Lord gave the answer — and the man himself remembers nothing. This goes together with that other line the Psalmist says, "I will teach transgressors Your ways," and so on. If we put the two together, we see that it is the Lord who does the work through us; we are not the ones doing it.
And never be afraid, if you have humility, to beg the Lord to give the answer at the moment you need it. I remember one small incident that comes to mind just now. One of our own people — he may even be among us here tonight — found himself facing a Protestant, who sat there quite comfortably speaking against the Most Holy Theotokos, saying she is not holy, that it is impossible for the All-Holy to be holy, and certainly not All-Holy in the way we Orthodox call her; and where did we get the idea that the Most Holy Theotokos is holy and that we should receive her in that sense? She was a woman, she was a Mary, as they put it — not the woman, not the Virgin, but one virgin among many, one woman among many.
The truth is that this man of ours was untrained in such matters. But it struck him as so evil, and he felt so guilty, while the others went on talking, and in a serious and heated tone at that. He could not follow them, so he turned inward to himself and began to beg the Lord, saying within himself: Lord, I cannot say anything about my mother and about Your mother.
“How can your mother not be holy, the way these men are saying, just because Scripture doesn't mention it?” And at that very moment he hears a voice within him saying: “How is she not holy? Say it to this gentleman.”
Doesn't Scripture say about Peter that they were found on the holy mountain? Peter, James and John — the Transfiguration took place there. Ask him: which mountain does Scripture call holy? And if the mountain is holy because Christ set His foot on it, how is His mother, who carried Him nine months inside her, not holy?
And so he too opens his mouth, like Balaam's donkey, and answers him and says: which mountain does Scripture call holy? He says, Tabor. And why is it called holy? Because, he says, the Lord walked on it. And where He walked, the mountain is holy, the soil is holy, the stones are holy.
And the one in whom He stayed nine months, the one who nursed Him — she isn't holy, is that it? You ox! And our own people, bless them, took heart at that, and of course they picked it up and used it as an argument themselves — but the other man was left with nothing to say, and off he went. He didn't know how to answer, and yet he answered him; because he asked Christ to give him a word at that very moment, so that he too might have a word to say.
Not so that it would be credited to his own account, because he was not the one who said it. Think of the greatest confession of all, the confession Peter made, when our Christ asked: Who do men say that the Son of Man is? And they answered — I do not know what the others said.
And when He asked, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Christ calls him blessed—not because Peter said this on his own, but because God had counted him worthy to speak through him.
How was he able to speak this truth? “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you.” You are not blessed simply because what you said is true, but because it was not you who spoke it. You were counted worthy to become an instrument, a means by which My Father could proclaim a truth—an eternal truth—which the whole world needs in order to be saved. If, then, a person wished to...
If one were to reflect on these opinions and thoughts, one would have much to say. Of course, not everyone is a teacher, nor is everyone a prophet; but everyone can become a Christian. They too can place themselves at God’s disposal, so that a person may be used by the grace of God to give an answer, because God watches over us and desires the salvation of all people.
Here at Agia Dynami, fifteen years ago, a university professor came to attend the service, to venerate, to light a candle.
And while he was there he sat down and struck up a conversation with an elder who was there, a priest. This priest was unlettered, but he was a confessor. He had the grace of the Holy Spirit and he helped the faithful a great deal.
I do not know how the conversation came around to it, but he said to the professor, “How will you spend these holy days? Are you spiritually prepared? Have you been to confession?” Of course, he did not know that the man was a university professor of theology. The professor asked him, “Are you a confessor, Geronta?” “I am,” he replied. “Well then, I have something I would like to tell you.” “Come,” the elder said.
And they sat down there on a stool and talked.
Have you finished, the priest says to him. He says, I have finished. Is there nothing else? He says no. Nothing at your work? I do not know — is there anything there you stumble over? What sort of work do you do? He says, I am a theologian, that is my field.
He says, do you perhaps stumble over something there, some point of doctrine that you do not believe? Because most of you preach, he says, and you do not believe.
It's true, there is one thing I've left unresolved inside me. Yes, sir — but it's unresolved inside me on a point of doctrine; that is, I can't take it in, I can't bring myself to believe it. And he says, 'What is this thing? May I hear it?'
He says: "What good would it do for you to hear it? This is a matter for educated people, for scholars. These things just don't get resolved, let's be honest. You may have the grace to hear confessions, but not to resolve this for me, not to give me an answer to my question."
“My question.” “Go on,” he said to him, “tell me your question.” But the man would not tell him, because he thought he would be wasting his words. “What can I tell you? What do you know about such doctrinal matters?” “Tell me as well,” he replied. “After all, Balaam’s donkey spoke—is it not written that it spoke? And did not Saint Charalambos’s horse speak? Of course it did. Did not the deer of Saint Artemios speak—or whatever that saint’s name is?” Well, the saint I am speaking of is commemorated on the twenty-fourth of March.
Make a note of that and go look it up. This man, he says, went to the public prosecutor and reported some wrongdoing. Well, in any case, out of embarrassment, or whatever it was, he finally told him. And what was this doctrinal question that he couldn't resolve? Here it is, he says.
And the priest says: it is like this, and this, and this, and this, and this.
The professor falls at his feet. He throws his arms around his feet. He kisses his feet. He kisses his hands. And the priest says, get up.
Thank you very much. I have put this to bishops, I have put it to priests, I have discussed it with colleagues, and no one ever resolved my difficulty. It was Christ who resolved it for you just now, the priest says; I did not resolve it for you either.
I asked the priest myself, since we used to talk about these things. I said to him, what did he say to you? How would I know, he says to me, what he said to me. And what did you say to him? What do you mean? How would I know, he says to me, what I said to him.
"You don't know anything?" "I do know," he says to me. "What do you know?" "That he spoke to me and I spoke to him. It's only what he said to me and what I said to him that I don't know." That was his answer.
Do you understand? Let me tell you another one of my own, something that happened to me up at the Sotiria Hospital. It was there that I answered an educated intellectual. He held forth for ten minutes, and I said three words to him, and he took the people he was with and walked out of the hall.
What he said to me, I have no idea. I don't know. I know only one thing: the whole time he was talking, I was standing there leaning against the radiator, on the third floor of the seventh clinic at Sotiria, the Galli wing, propped up like this, and I was saying to Christ — I said to Him, now, Boss, we're in a real mess here. I was saying it all inside myself.
"What is this man saying with his theories about justice and all the rest of it? I'm completely in the dark," I told Him. "So, if You think it right, for the sake of these people who came here, that they should not lose their faith, because they take him for the educated one, and they will listen to him and they will listen to me, tell me what to say. Otherwise I resign. The shame will be Yours. I came, and that's all I could do."
He finished. "Are you done?" I say to him. "Yes," he says to me, "people never believe anyway." I said, I will answer. And I give this gentleman his answer. And he gets up and takes his companions, and they file out past us.
Right in front of us, they opened the door and went out into the corridor. We continued our conversation. What he said to me and what I said to him, I do not know. I know what he said to me and what I answered him. But what he said to the other man and what I said to him, I do not know. These, then, are things I have seen in practice—I who am telling you about them. I am sharing them with you from my own personal experience. If you give yourself to God and have even a little philotimo within you—if you feel that the person leaving at that moment is your savior, your Most Holy Theotokos, your mother, or your Saint—God will open your mouth. He will open it, and it will become a reality.
It is true, what the psalm says: "O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips." You open them for me, because I will not open them on my own.
Jeremiah was sent out too. I don't know if you have read it. God sent Jeremiah. "I'm not going," he says. "Where am I to go? I am only a child." "Do not tell Me that you are small," God says to him. "I am the One who is asking this of you." And God puts His own hand on Jeremiah's mouth.
You will go, He tells him, to tear down; you will go to demolish; you will go to dig up and to plant again. It is you I want. I Myself will put the words in your mouth. Do you understand? But we hold back out of embarrassment, because this man speaks, and that man speaks — there's the educated one. He may well have the education, and yes, we do respect education.
But he cannot make his way through In any case, the next words are these: "For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would have given it; with whole burnt offerings Thou wilt not be pleased." If You wanted sacrifice, he says, I could easily have given You that, goats and calves and the rest.
I am ready enough for that, but You were not pleased with those things; You do not want them. You wanted something else. And here he makes a prophecy about Christ, just as it is set out in the letter to the Hebrews: "Sacrifice and offering Thou hast not desired; goats and calves Thou hast not desired. Behold, I will come, I will take a body, and I will come down."
And that is exactly what God went on to do. It is enough for a man simply to offer his willing intention, and God will help him in these things. And to close, at the end David says what the true sacrifice to God is: "A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit."
That is where you must begin. Even if you bring God a sacrifice, if you do not bring it with a broken spirit, it is not accepted by God. Whatever sacrifice you may offer, the thing that moves God is whether you are humble in your inner disposition.
That is what disarms God. And this is why he says, "A heart that is broken and humbled God will not despise." He will not despise it, which means He does not turn away from it. Because when God despises someone, that is when God turns His face away from that person.
That is the serious matter here. And then he goes on to speak about Zion, about the Church and so on, and about how the Babylonians had ruined it. He offers a prayer: "Do good, O Lord, in Thy good pleasure unto Zion." That is, help Zion, do good to Zion, "and let the walls of Jerusalem be builded." He prays and pleads that the walls of Jerusalem be built up again, the walls that the Babylonians had torn to the ground.
"Then shalt Thou be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, with oblation and whole burnt offerings." Then, he says, You will accept the sacrifice and Your righteousness, O Lord. By "oblation" he means the offerings that people bring, and so these sacrifices are made.
"And then shall they offer calves upon Thine altar" — whole calves, that is, not merely portions that they will roast. Whole burnt offerings will be given entire, when, in answer to my prayer, all of Zion and Jerusalem is restored.
These, more or less, are the words David spoke after his fall, and our Church regards them as so serious and so instructive. I said it earlier in passing and I say it again: we meet this psalm at every turn.
Whatever service we begin, we begin with "Have mercy on me, O God." So He wants mercy and not sacrifice, as David himself says in another place. And therefore I pray that through his intercessions we too may receive mercy; but that will depend on us, on whether we have a heart that is broken and humbled.
And this I wish for one another and for all. Amen.

Όμως παρακάτω, έπειτα, θα τον ελέγξει, θα τον θυμηθεί, το Πνεύμα το Άγιο θα εργαστεί. Εγώ υποχρεωμένος να σπείρω, θα βρέξει ο Θεός, θα φέρει άνοιξη ο Θεός, εγώ θα τα κάνω τα υπόλοιπα. Αλλά εμείς στεκόμαστε, ή εγώ είμαι, είναι των παπάδων δουλειά αυτή, είναι των ιεροκηρύκων η δουλειά αυτή, καταλαβαίνετε;
Αγάλλεται λοιπόν, λέγω, ο άνθρωπος, συστήνεται μια χαρά εσωτερική και ελευθερώνεται όταν καταλάβει, αισθανθεί ότι ετακτοποιήθη το θέμα των αμαρτιών του, ετακτοποιήθη η υπόθεσή του. Πώς θα αισθάνεται ένας μελλοθάνατος όταν μάθει ότι του εδόθη χάρις;
Συμβρεθήκαν κάπου και είπανε λόγια, πήρανε θέση, απαντήσανε και τους κατετρόπωσαν τους άλλους ή των άλλων και οι άλλοι θαύμασαν. Ο ίδιος όμως αν ερωτηθεί εκ των υστέρων, τι είπες, μπορείς να μου πεις; Δεν θυμάται ο ίδιος τι είπε. Τι έγινε σε αυτή την περίπτωση;
Δεν λέει η Γραφή του στον Πέτρο ότι ευρέθηκαν εν τω όρει τω Αγίω; Πέτρος, Ιάκωβος και ο Ιωάννης, έγινε μεταμόρφωση. Πες του, για ποιο όρος λέει ότι είναι Άγιο; Και πώς το όρος του Αγίου που επάτησε ο Χριστός, πώς η μητέρα του που τον είχε 9 μήνες μέσα δεν είναι Αγία;
