Summary

For the sinner, Panagopoulos traces a return through repentance, sincere confession, and restored life within the Orthodox Church. Christ heals wounded humanity in the ecclesial “inn” of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10), employing clergy, Scripture, Tradition, and the mysteries; priests remit sins as servants of divine grace, not by private authority, in accordance with John 20:19–23. Neither charitable deeds nor religious ambition can secure salvation without right faith, humility, Communion, and perseverance. A vocation to priesthood therefore requires sober ecclesial discernment. Repentance also demands restitution: wealth acquired through theft or injustice cannot be sanctified by alms, but must be returned and confessed.

This evening, continuing from what I said earlier—which, of course, arose outside our planned subject as we were speaking—I would like to answer some people who have questions that appear reasonable and well-founded. These answers will also benefit the rest of you.

There are, of course, some who have understood the question of salvation correctly, and how a person should conduct himself in matters of faith. But there are others who, although they have listened for many years in these halls and elsewhere, have still not succeeded in acquiring a full understanding, so that at any moment they can give the appropriate answer both to themselves, when some difficulty arises, and to someone else.

Among the things that sometimes get put forward here, some of them set certain ones aside, and, as you know, they have no answer for them. They don't toss them my way.

And at some point I would like to answer them, wherever I could be of some wider benefit. So this evening I brought up a few of these questions from that list — the ones that look simple but are complicated for some people — and others as we were discussing them, and I did it in such a way as not to give my own opinion, because if I were to answer off the top of my head, it would just mean that this is what Panagopoulos said.

‘Panagopoulos.’ But who is Panagopoulos, that he should be able to hold the correct opinion on this matter? That is not how it is.

I therefore hastened to call upon the opinions of saintly men concerning these matters, which may also be troubling others. For many times, in the answers to such questions, other people also find solutions to their own particular problems.

So, from this series of questions, allow me to bring a few to your attention this evening.

The first question is: ‘I am a sinner. How can I be saved?’ The question is simple, of course, but it requires an answer. Many answers are given. One person recommends works of charity; another recommends metanoia, repentance. Someone else recommends sharing in another person’s suffering, visiting the sick, beginning to fast when you did not fast before, praying, and coming to faith. Various paths are proposed.

I will take one path, the one given by that holy man, who speaks of the person who does indeed believe in God but is a sinner. What must you do? There is no other way than the way of repentance and confession.

Do not go looking for some other road, and do not try in any way—by roundabout methods of your own devising, whether drawn from your reasoning or from the world—to conceal this sickness of yours. What does this holy man say? ‘Are you a sinner? Is this what troubles you? Come to the Church. Do not go down to the seashore and tell your sins to the forty waves.’

Do not go lifting stones so that you can crawl beneath them, nor merely raise your hands toward heaven. Come to the Church; fall down before God and weep in the Church. Outside the Church there is no salvation, whatever a person may do.

The Church is the treasury of grace, and through the Church Christ saves those who come to her. If you open the second chapter of the Book of Acts, you will find this: and the Lord added to the Church those who were being saved. Those who were baptised and accepted Him — these He added to the Church.

They were baptized. Why? So that their healing could continue; for, being human, they would become sick again and would need the physicians and medicines of the Church. The medicines are found in the Mysteries of the Church, and the physicians are the priests—the clergy within the Church.

However one may look at it, a person is not saved outside the Church. Many, of course, believe that the Church has gone astray because some priest does not conduct himself properly, or that the Church has been left barren of grace because some bishop does not do what he ought.

That is a grave error. The Church has not lost grace, nor has she lost her power to heal. At this point, the holy John Chrysostom says: ‘It is better to be mistaken with the Church than to be exactly right outside her.’

Why should I go here or there? ‘I listen to the radio; I am better on my own. I do not need the Church—not with the priest as he is, the bishop as he is, and the clergy as they are.’ Such a person is mistaken. The holy John Chrysostom tells you to come to the Church, to fall down before God, to seek counsel, and to weep over your sins.

Confess your sins to the priest of God, to the man God has appointed and entrusted with this, through whom God — that is, Christ — cleanses you and forgives you your sins. Because it is not the clergy who forgive sins. Who forgives them? Christ forgives sins through the clergy.

For, if you have noticed, when a sinner comes and says, ‘Father, I have sinned; I did this and that,’ the priest tells him, ‘Yes, kneel down. Do you repent? Kneel down.’ Then he immediately says, ‘You, O Lord’—at once referring the matter to Him—‘not I,’ as the Roman Catholics say.

"You, Lord, who said — when You had risen, that evening, in the upper room, to the disciples, when You gave them the Holy Spirit and granted them the grace to bind and to loose. You, then, since You said it: 'Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound, and whatever you loose shall be loosed' — loose the sins of this servant of Yours as well." It is Christ who looses sins, and forgives sins, and washes sins away.

Not the priest. Fix this firmly in your nous, your spiritual intellect: not the priest. The priest is an instrument, a tool in the hands of grace. Let no one ever be held back by contrary thoughts and thus fail to approach the priest of God, as the saint says here.

He says here: let them, then, confess their sins to the priest of God — the sins. Say them here. Here is where you are to say them; do not wait for them to be counted out over there. And then there are certain people who could have been helped in this world with Holy Unction, with repentance and Holy Confession, with Holy Communion — and it was never done, supposedly so as not to frighten them, and so they were sent off, wrapped up and sealed, for Hell. And afterwards their families begin doing things, memorial service after memorial service, hoping to help them. Now, here, in this present life: so that you may not be exposed and reproved there before myriads of angels and of men. Because some people are ashamed — how shall I put it — they are ashamed to say these things. When you were committing them you were not ashamed; why be ashamed now? The shame belongs to the moment we commit them, not to the moment we are about to be rid of them. This should not be a matter of shame. Satan is a craftsman, as I have told you before.

The devil once stood outside a place of confession, giving something to the people. When the priest came out, he asked him, ‘What are you doing there? What are you giving them?’ ‘I am giving them something,’ he replied. ‘What are you giving them?’ ‘I am giving them shame.’

“I had taken shame away from them earlier, so that they would sin. Now I give it back to them, so that they will be ashamed to tell you their sins and will remain mine once again.” Yet many people do not take this seriously. That is why the Saint says here: “Take heed. Confess your sins to the priest of God, so that you may not be put to shame there before angels and men.” Then he reasons with us: “Tell me, which is better: to reveal them here, in the Church, to your spiritual father alone?” Only one person will learn them—and spiritual fathers, as you know, have the grace of God and forget them as soon as you leave the confessional.

For if these men somehow stored up all our faults, all our perverse deeds, and all the evil things we have done, they would go mad.

But God blesses them, and they forget. Once they leave the confessional, they do not even remember, though someone may have confessed a hundred or even twelve hundred sins. What, then, is preferable? Which is better: to tell them here, in the Church, to your spiritual father alone, or to have them made public there before tens of thousands? There they will be uncovered. However much people may wish to conceal them, they will not remain hidden; they will be laid bare.

So, if you truly say that you want to be saved, there is only one way: come forward, repent, go to the Church, find someone with whom you can communicate, find a way to make a sincere and complete confession, and return to the Church. Remain within the Church—remain within the Church.

When Christ found the man who had fallen among thieves, He did not take him to a coffeehouse. He took him to the inn. He entrusted him to the innkeeper, left two denarii, and said, “Take care of him. I shall return.”

This contains the whole mystery of the Incarnation—God’s dispensation in the flesh—and the entire way of man’s salvation. The man who fell among thieves is the human person, and the thieves are the demons. They left him half dead: they killed his soul, cut him off from God, deprived his soul of its life, and left him only his body.

The Samaritan is Christ, who came and took upon His shoulders the human nature He received from mankind through the Theotokos. He bore that nature, sanctified it, and brought it to the inn. The mercy He showed, the oil, and the blood He poured out—all these are Christ Himself.

The innkeeper is His clergy. The two denarii are Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition. It is not Scripture alone, as the Protestants say, but also Tradition, which stands on equal authority with Scripture—both together. “Whatever more you spend”—whatever labor and sweat you expend—“I am going away, but I shall come again, and I shall repay you for everything you have done.”

That is where man will be saved. Whenever any one of us falls among the thieves—the demons—and they wound his soul, he must go there to find healing. This, then, is the right prescription. That is where you must begin. If you do not pass along this road, then whatever other road you take, you will never reach the destination.

Begin there, because grace will then take charge of you and help you. Grace will strengthen you so greatly that what was impossible will become possible. What you could not do before, you will now be able to do—not by your own strength, but always by grace.

That, at least, is the answer in brief, as you can see. After all, as most of you know, we have already given six complete talks on metanoia, repentance, and confession. We also have written material: a book containing a list of six hundred sins, which can help anyone who wishes to make use of it.

Another soul asks this question: When the Lord descended into Hades, did He save everyone there? Many people ask this because they are misled by certain troparia of the Church which say that all departed from below.

John Chrysostom says the following: “Christ saved no one in Hades who had not already been worthy of salvation while on earth.” Pay close attention to that qualification.

There is your answer in five words, and it is entirely certain.

Christ, who brought life to Hades and granted us eternal life, saved no one there who had not already shown himself worthy of this salvation while on earth. There is no need for philosophical speculation. If everyone there was going to be saved, and if His preaching saved them all, then He would not have gone to preach even there to the spirits in prison.

I am preaching at this very moment. Whoever wishes to listen does so, and whoever does not wish to listen does not. The very same thing happened there.

Some people take the question further and raise another objection: “How could they possibly have refused to listen to Him, when they were in Hell?”

But who told you that they were in Hell? Did Hell and Paradise exist in the time of the Old Testament? There was Hades, where the righteous and the others were together. After the Lord’s Resurrection, Paradise was opened, and the thief was the first to enter, as our Byzantine iconography depicts so beautifully and sets before us for our instruction.

Just as everyone is gathered together here, and those who wish receive Him, so it was there: they were all together in spirit, and those who wished received Him.

Therefore, people who lacked a good and receptive disposition while on earth were not benefited or edified at all. They were hard-hearted, indifferent, and unwilling. That is why it is said so beautifully here: “Christ saved no one in Hades who had not already been worthy of salvation while on earth.”

This teaching we have been sharing with you is from John Chrysostom. We must never rush to form opinions about such matters. These are God’s works, and we do not know how He accomplishes them. Christ descended and preached to the spirits in prison. He remained below for thirty-three hours. As many years as He lived here in the flesh, so many hours He remained there in spirit.

...in spirit. For as many years as He came here to the people of the flesh, that is how many hours He remained there with the spiritual ones. Because from three in the afternoon, the ninth hour on Friday, until twelve at night, at the crowing of the cock...

Thank you.

The Apostolic Constitutions say that from that moment until the Resurrection is exactly thirty-three hours. He proclaimed the message to them, and those who received Him He made new, granting them life. But as for those who truly were —

It was not difficult for Him to save philosophers or anyone else, provided that they accepted Him. Indeed, I have read in the writings of Saint Nikodemos the Hagiorite

that someone once accused Socrates of various things—unbelief and the like—and claimed that he had been condemned to Hell. Socrates then appeared to him in a dream, and the man asked him, “Brother, why are you being punished?” Socrates replied, “I lived before Christ and did not know Him. Yet even so, I wrote about Christ; I was guided by God and wrote that unless someone comes to save us, we shall remain trapped in sin.”

“And when He descended into Hades,” he said, “I believed in Him and was saved.” Therefore, let us not rush to impose our own judgments. As long as a person is of good will, there is always the possibility of salvation. It is people of ill will whom you should fear—the proud who think they know everything.

It's the whole list: "I've read all this, so I know it. I came from a good background, my grandfather was a priest, and I don't know what else — priestly stock, educated people in the family," and so on.

That is the person you should fear. When I say you should fear him, I do not mean that you should be afraid he might strike you; I mean you should fear that he will be lost. Sin does not make it difficult for Christ to save someone; pride does. And He said this plainly: “Tax collectors and harlots go into the Kingdom of Heaven before you.”

...from heaven. The women we call damned, here on Athinas Street and so on, and down in the back alleys — we may well find them ahead of us, if someone comes along to help them repent. Ahead of us, or ahead of certain others who are not in that so-called mess, but who are in another mess, a mess of egotism, together with Satan. Because the one is assailed in the flesh and the other is assailed in the spirit, and the one sin, the spiritual, differs from the fleshly as far as the earth differs from heaven, and as far as east differs from west. Yes, so that is the answer.

That answers the question in this case. Here is another question. Someone asks, “I want to become a clergyman so that I can save the world. I feel this desire within me.” The answer is this: whenever you have a good desire, take care to examine who it is that is prompting you.

Satan may help a person to perform good works, to fast, to attend many services, to keep vigils, and to do similar things, while his ultimate aim is to lead that person into pride and bring about his fall later on.

In other words, he helps you in virtue now so that he may catch you five or ten years later. He has patient endurance. Considered in itself, what you seek is good. But what you seek must be accompanied by two kinds of calling—the natural inclination within you and the divine call from above.

You must have the inclination, and He must also grant you the honor of calling you. For in connection with the Prophet Jeremiah, the question is asked: “Who appointed you? Who called you to proclaim My wonders?” You may say, “But I am going to do good; that is why I acted.” That does not make it acceptable.

If you wish, read a parallel passage at the end of the second chapter of John. It says that many believed in Him because of the miracles they saw. Yet the Lord did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew what was within them.

What does that mean? They came, but it meant nothing. They have come today, and tomorrow they will leave.

And God, who desires the salvation of man, does not accept him for this calling. What he is doing may be good, but it is not a calling from Me. Someone else is helping you and urging you on, so as to cast you into pride, and so forth.

If we examine the lives of the Saints, and generally of those who entered the clergy, together with the remarkable ways in which they entered it, we shall find that almost none of them went forward voluntarily on their own. They did not seek it. Indeed, when they learned that others intended to make them clergymen, see what happened in the lives of Basil the Great and John Chrysostom.

Those men fled into deserted places so that they would not be ordained. In the end, however, they obeyed the Church. Take Saint Nicholas as an example. The clergy there were considering whom they should appoint as bishop, but they could not find the right person.

That evening the Lord appeared to the most respected member of their company and told him, “Do not trouble yourselves or rack your brains. The first man who comes to the Church tomorrow morning to light a candle will be named Nicholas. Take him and make him bishop.”

The Saint of God truly had this good habit: he would stop at the Church, light his candle, pray, and then go to his work. And so he came. They were waiting to see who would arrive. As soon as he entered, they called him over. “What is your name, my child?” “Nicholas,” he replied. “Come here.” They took him, appointed him, and he became bishop. We have cases like this.

A person who seeks the clergy on his own, without examining whether this desire and intention come from the Holy Spirit, must be very careful. There is a danger of spiritual shipwreck. He should not pursue it. On this subject I found the following passage written by Basil the Great. It comes from the Constitutions, and those of you who have the Rudder will find it on page 275. I shall read it now.

In simple terms, it says: any ascetic or monk who loves and longs to become a clergyman and be ordained, or to become an abbot and exercise authority over others, supposedly in order to save them, suffers from a demonic disease and is guilty of lust for power.

Such a man, Basil the Great says, suffers from a demonic disease and is guilty of lust for power.

So yes, he's doing a good thing — but examine it, and see whether it really is good. Because, as the same Saint Basil says, the good is not good if it isn't done in a good way.

Many of you will remember an elder, Father Ieronymos of Aegina. Many of you may have visited him and heard much from him. I once heard something from him about this very matter. One morning I went to visit him and hear words of God, because he truly was a man of illumination.

As soon as I went in, he sat me down there, in that way of his: 'Sit down, Dimitros, and hear the strange things that go on.' And so Dimitros sat down to hear the strange things. 'Did you see a lady who was just leaving?' I hadn't seen her; she must have gone out another door.

“Well, that lady—” “I did not see her, Father,” I said. “Good. Better that you did not; then I can speak freely,” he said in his Eastern manner. “She has a son, and she wants to make him a priest. She says, ‘Father, I am going to make my son a priest.’”

A priest's child. And you — which of your own children are you making a priest? You? "Which one will I make?" she says, "Father." And what settles that? Father, that isn't yours to settle. That belongs to God. Ask God whether He wants your child to be a priest. "Well, I've made a vow — I'll make them a priest." Father, do you ever stop and ask whether they themselves want to become a priest — so that the place isn't lost, so that a soul isn't lost, so that my own soul isn't lost either.

That is the problem. If her son becomes a priest merely because she wants it, that is a grave matter. Take care and guard against it. If God calls him, then let him become a priest. But if God does not call him, he will become a priest of the devil. Do you understand? That is what happens. You want him to have a certain life in the world—and so do I—but what matters is what God wants. That is not our task, beloved. Our task is to say: “Lord, if You see that I can serve somewhere without becoming a cause for Your name to be blasphemed, for souls to be lost, or for my own soul to be lost, then You arrange it.”

I do not consider myself worthy. It is a great thing for a person to overcome his pride, save himself, and drive the demons from within himself—still more to hang the care of other souls around his neck. If priests understood the responsibility placed upon them by the stole they wear, many would not dare undertake it. They do not understand it; they have not heard, learned, or paid attention to it.

That is why the ordained man, despite all that has been prescribed... must be a man of humility. And this is indeed what happens, because no one except heretics, who are deluded, believes that he is already saved. No Orthodox Christian believes this.

Whether the Lord ultimately saves him or not, he does not allow himself even to think that he is already saved. He labors for his salvation, watches carefully over it, and does everything he can; yet he says, “If He wills, He will save me. If He wills.” Salvation is not mine to decide. It belongs to Him. If He wills, He will bring me in.

That's the spirit of it. And especially when you think of what Paul says: the righteous man, he says, is barely saved — barely — and even then as though through fire. So where does that leave the rest of us? Don't you hear people these days adding up their good works? People who are deluded, because they belong to some society or association and so on, and they've got it into their heads that this will save them — or because they serve on charitable foundations.

Or because they built a church, provided dowries for two girls and helped an orphan, or work in a home for the elderly and feed the aged, they think they will be saved. None of these things guarantees salvation. Salvation requires right faith, humility, communion with the Church, metanoia—repentance—confession, and Holy Communion.

These are what save us. Everything else we do is the fruit of a tree that has been properly grafted and planted within the Church. Such works, by themselves and apart from Christ, do not bring salvation. There is no salvation in them alone.

I once met a wealthy lady whom I wanted to help come to confession. She told me, “I have settled the matter of my soul, Mr. Panagopoulos. You know that I built the Church of Saint Nicholas, where more than three hundred people worship.”

She had built Saint Nicholas, three hundred people worshipped there, and she herself remained as she was. So I was compelled to tell her the following. I thought it might help; I do not know what God arranged afterward. I lost contact with her—it was twenty years ago.

I said, “May I ask you something, madam? What became of the craftsmen who built the Ark?”

“What are you trying to tell me?” she asked. “It is the answer to what you have just told me.”

“What became of the craftsmen who built the Ark? They built the Ark, and animals were saved: snakes, buffaloes, wolves, foxes, and the rest. But the craftsmen drowned. That is what awaits you,” I told her—I, little Panagopoulos. “Pay attention to what I am telling you.” I do not know what she did afterward. I do not even know whether she is still alive. I know nothing about where she may be.

Therefore, it is a good thing for a person to fear death. But how does he fear it, and why? There are two ways in which a person may fear death, as Saint John Climacus explains.

As I told you from the beginning, I will support everything I say with the teaching of the Saints, so that my words may have some salt and weight and not be merely Panagopoulos’s opinions. Listen, then, to what Saint John Climacus says.

"Fear of death is a characteristic of our nature, one that came upon us through disobedience." Because of that disobedience, because of sin, this fear of death is in us. What is going to happen to me? That, he says, is something natural. "But terror at death is proof of sins for which we have not repented." It is one thing to be afraid, and quite another to be terrified.

Being afraid — all right, you're afraid. But to be terrified, so that your whole expression changes when someone speaks to you about death: that is evidence that you have sins that are unrepented and unsettled. Those are what accuse you. And that is what you fear — the tribunal.

There are, then, two kinds of fear of death, brothers and sisters. One is natural and may bring tears—not wailing and tearing one’s hair. But there is also the other kind, when a person trembles, laments, and grieves. You tremble because, as John Climacus says, “terror of death is evidence of unrepented sins.” It proves that you have sins that remain unrepented, unconfessed, and unsettled—whether sins of the flesh, worldly sins, or even tax-related sins. The sins are there; the accounts remain unsettled. That is why you are terrified.

This brings to mind a story we once told. A missionary was speaking to a group of cannibals. When they heard that the Resurrection would take place and that everyone would rise again, one of them suddenly sprang to his feet.

“Impossible!” he said. “The Resurrection cannot happen.” They asked him why. “It cannot happen,” he kept saying. As the discussion continued, he insisted, “The Resurrection cannot happen.” The missionary found it strange: why did this man not want the Resurrection to take place? Was the Resurrection not something good?

“Because,” the man said, “if all the people I have eaten rise again, what will become of me?”

Exactly the same thing happens with a person who has this kind of fear. It is precisely the same situation.

So there is such a thing as fear, and we have set out what that fear is. Why are you afraid?

Because there are unsettled accounts. You have wronged someone, harmed someone, or stolen. You have unjustly accumulated deposits and other possessions. You have sins that remain unrepented and unconfessed. That is what makes you afraid.

Or perhaps yours is the natural fear. Who can claim to be fearless in the face of death? Out of humility, a person ought to have this fear. He ought to say, “I am not worthy, Lord.”

This, then, is the answer one can give to such people.

One more point, which I think is related to this. No, forgive me—there is another question: “Perhaps I am upright, as I believe, although the money I earn may not be entirely honest; but I give some of it to the poor.”

In this situation, I believe, there is a large class of Christians who acquire wealth unlawfully and imagine that by giving it to a poor person they are saving the recipient, themselves, and everyone else as well.

But you cannot give alms from stolen goods. They are not yours, and you have no right to dispose of them. You cannot use them to make chandeliers for a church, care for orphans, help widows, or build churches. These things were stolen. They are not yours. They are another person’s sweat, another household’s livelihood, another person’s field—perhaps even his blood. Whatever the case may be, they belong to someone else.

You must give them back to the person who owns them, to the one to whom they properly belong. Then he may dispose of them however he wishes. No one appointed you as a steward with the right to steal what is mine and then perform many acts of mercy with it—commissioning icons, doing charitable works, or helping an orphan.

You are deceiving yourself. Never let Satan deceive you in this way, because many people refuse to return what they have taken to those from whom they took it.

— to the people they took it from, to whom it properly belongs, to whom it rightly belongs. Instead they manage it, supposedly for charitable works. Some charitable work that is! In reality it does not save the person. And I think we should also hear, once again, what Saint John Climacus says: do not say you are gathering on account of the poor — "I'm collecting for the poor." For two mites—

“With two small coins she purchased the Kingdom.” The widow’s two mites, it is said, purchased the Kingdom. Therefore, you do not need to amass the world’s billions—whether lawfully or unjustly—in order to save others or to save yourself.

With two pennies, it says, they were saved. With two mites, they purchased the Kingdom. So if any of us is involved in such a matter, let him pay close attention and sort out what truly belongs to him.

He has no right to dispose of what belongs to others. I have often received telephone calls from people who remain anonymous and ask, “What should I do?” Return the money to the person to whom it belongs. If that person is no longer alive, return it to his relatives. If there are no relatives, give it to a charitable work in his name. But do not keep it yourself. If the person is alive, it must go directly to him. “But I am ashamed.” Then send a check anonymously. Find some way for the money to reach him, and at the same time confess the sin to your spiritual father.

If you have the strength to tell him, “Brother, I wronged you, and now I am returning what is yours,” then the work of setting that sin right is complete. If you do not have the strength to do this, you are not being compelled. Give back the fruit of his sweat and confess the sin.

Or write anonymously: “This is money I owe you because I wronged you.” There is no need to say who you are.

Thank you. Just one question. There are a thousand and one situations a person can find himself in... I know people who packed up objects that they had stolen and shipped them abroad. It has become the custom, it is the fashion, to steal from big hotels, from big restaurants, from big whatever else. They steal a serving platter, they steal teaspoons, they steal plates, they steal towels, they steal bed sheets, and so on — and important people, important people, I...

I myself have mailed stolen goods abroad with my own hands in cases like these. You know what goes on in this life. Whatever it may be—something from your home, clothing, another object, a book, money, or property—identify it and give it back.

And don't keep forcing it to hang around your neck — let it go. And don't deceive yourselves that you have any right to do as you please with someone else's sweat, someone else's blood, someone else's things, handing them out as alms to other people. God does not accept these things. "Let not the oil of the sinner anoint my head." Even if you build a sanatorium and care for people with tuberculosis there free of charge, God takes no account of it. It is an abomination in the eyes of God. And you remember one evening when…

I told you this story. Once, a prominent businessman who owned a large factory invited a friend to lunch. After they had eaten at the restaurant, he said, “Get in,” took him in his car, and drove outside the city.

And he pointed out to him, across the way, a big wing that was going up. "Do you see that?" he asked him. "Yes," the friend said. "And what do you think I'm building?" "What is it?" the friend asked. "I'm building a sanatorium," he said, "a hundred beds." "That's small," the friend told him.

“Why?” “Because even the workers in your factory whom you treat unjustly and who become ill will not all fit inside it.”

He made his money by driving them into tuberculosis, and then he built them a sanatorium. Do you know how many such strange contradictions exist in the world? And this is not the only one I could tell you about now.

Here is another question for the few minutes that remain. “Mr. Panagopoulos, one evening you said that we are responsible for our neighbor’s salvation. I cannot accept that.” It is indeed difficult to accept.

James writes plainly in his epistle: “To him who knows how to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.” That is what James says. Perhaps I should tell someone that he must repent, help an elderly woman on her way, put her in a taxi so she can go to the doctor, or do some other good deed...

Every such good thing that I fail to do is recorded as sin.

It is no accident that our lives have been woven together with the lives of others—at work, in the office, on the road, in the car, or in the building where we live. If we wish to be called Christians, we are obliged to place ourselves at the service of our fellow human beings.

So if we can help someone—with a book, with a word, or in any of the countless other ways available to us—and we do not, it is sin. I say this often. If you wish to read it for yourselves, you will find it in Ezekiel, chapter three, from verse seventeen onward.

There it lays it down clearly. When I say to the wicked man that he is going to die, that he will be condemned — and you, He says, do not warn that wicked man, so that we might save him — then, He says, that man shall die in his sin, but his blood I will require at your hand. You are the one who will have to answer to me for him.

But if you warn the lawless man—the wrongdoer, whoever he may be, who is not living rightly, seeing things rightly, or acting rightly—and he still does not turn back from his lawless way, then, God says, you shall deliver your own soul.

He will die and be condemned, but you have delivered your soul. In plain language, you have done your duty. At this point, the divine John Chrysostom says: “Each one of us who does not labor for the salvation of his neighbor is accountable.”

Each one of us who takes no interest in his neighbor’s salvation is accountable, he says. And on that Day we shall give an account. Do we understand this? We have an obligation. Many people have found the right path through a book that we sent them anonymously.

We may have helped them with a leaflet that concerned them, or with a letter reminding them of certain things. Yet we have not taken this responsibility seriously, and many of us remain indifferent. We say, “Shut the door; let us go inside.” But one day the door will open, even if you have locked it. Judgment will come down through the chimney or through the roof, seize both you and me by the ear, and take us away to give an account.

Then we shall discuss it—if I can shut the door, let us go inside.

Yes, indeed, sir, we bear responsibility. So accept it, my brother or sister—whoever you may be. Accept that we bear responsibility, and take an interest in your neighbor.

This concern is itself an act of mercy toward our fellow human beings, yet those of us who are able to offer it deprive them of it. The next question is closely connected and quite specific, if you will allow me: “You once said that almsgiving delivers us—that is, it saves us—and even delivers us from Hell.”

“But I am poor. I have nothing with which to give alms. Will I therefore be condemned? Is God so unjust?”

A fine piece of reasoning—carefully garnished and polished.

And in a certain way, this is related to the previous objection: that God will summon me and put me in the dock if I have not also devoted myself to my neighbor. For, as you may remember, the commandment is not only to love the Lord your God, but also to love your neighbor as yourself. You are to love Him with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your understanding, and with all your strength—yes, with all your strength.

Your strength: whatever influence you have, whatever ability you have, whatever money you have, whatever position you hold, and whatever power you have to influence others. That does not mean merely picking up the telephone to arrange someone’s transfer. It means making your power available—using whatever standing, authority, and influence you possess—to help the other person in this situation.

At this point, then, I would like to share a beautiful passage from one of the foremost interpreters of the Scriptures, whose name is Euthymios. He says this because many people think that almsgiving consists entirely of money.

Did poor Lazarus have any money? Did he give material alms? Yet he showed mercy through his longsuffering. He helped the rich man, even though the rich man gained no benefit from Lazarus—from his longsuffering, his life, his patient endurance, or any of these things. But that is another matter.

Almsgiving, then, is not limited to giving someone a hundred drachmas or a thousand, paying his rent or electricity bill, or settling some debt that hangs around his neck like a noose and thus bringing him relief.

There are countless ways in which a person can give alms. Listen, then, to what this holy man says, and you will be comforted concerning this matter if you have no drachmas to give. I spoke about this in that homily on when a day may be considered complete. I believe this was the final point: that it is essential for a person to perform some act of mercy each day. In this way, as it were, he puts the finishing touch on his day, so that it may be complete, holy, peaceful, and sinless.

He says: “It is possible to show mercy not only with money, but also with words; and even if you have nothing, you can do so with tears. For the ways of almsgiving are many, and this commandment is broad. Here we shall receive mercy from men, and there from God.”

You have no money, he says, but you have words with which to comfort someone. You can speak to another person on his behalf and thereby show him mercy through your intercession. Let me tell you about something animals have done that we have failed to do. Read the Life of Saint Artemon appointed for the twenty-fourth of March.

There you will see that, when this martyr was being unjustly tortured, a doe went to the governor, accused him, and said, “You must intervene, because this and that are taking place.” A doe! Of course, a doe is an irrational animal. You will tell me that it was guided by the grace of the Lord, and that this is how it happened. But if an irrational animal can be guided by the grace of the Lord, why should I, a rational human being, not possess this grace of the Lord and be guided to do something similar—to help another person?

A person does not need to be some clever operator, a lawyer, or a wheeler-dealer who knows how to pull strings and bring Pharaoh crashing down. No; this could be accomplished through grace. That is what he tells us here as well.

There are many ways, he says, in which a person may receive mercy here, and God will show mercy to you there. That is what he writes, that is what he says, and, if you will permit me to say so, that is how things truly are. Blessed are those who are willing to understand this.

I think that's it. In any case, I'll make a short stop here, and there are a few more things that may take up another evening as well — things I think are of real benefit to this subject, because many of us find answers that are cut very much to our own measure.

Βέβαια, επεκτείνεται η ερώτηση σε ορισμένους, γιατί υπάρχουν παρενθέσεις. Ήταν δυνατόν τώρα να μην τον ακούσουνε στην κόλαση που ήσαν;

Ώστε υπάρχει φόβος και εκθέσαμε τον φόβο. Γιατί φοβάσαι;

Εγώ όμως είμαι πτωχός. Δεν έχω να κάνω ελεημοσύνη. Θα κολαστώ. Ώστε τόσο άδικος είναι ο Θεός;

Και θα δείτε εκεί ότι, όταν τον μάρτυρα αυτόν τον εβασάνιζαν αδίκως, μια έλαφος, ένα ελάφι, μια έλαφος, επήγε στον εισαγγελέα και τον κατηγόρησε και του λέει: «Να επέμβεις, διότι γίνεται αυτό και αυτό». Μια έλαφος. Βέβαια, η έλαφος είναι ένα άλογο ζώο. Οδηγήθηκε διά χάριτος Κυρίου και έγινε, θα μου πείτε. Αν το άλογο ζώο οδηγείται από χάριν Κυρίου, εγώ, λογικός, γιατί να μην έχω αυτή τη χάρη του Κυρίου και να οδηγηθώ να κάνω κάτι παρεμφερές, να βοηθήσω έναν άνθρωπο;
