Summary
Forgiveness offered to an offender does not abolish the offender’s obligation to repent, seek pardon, and restore peace, Panagopoulos maintains. Christ prayed for His crucifiers in Luke 23:34, yet reconciliation must be received through repentance; Christians should overcome pride and take the first step before death closes the ordinary opportunity. Occult practitioners cannot expel demons: Satan may briefly withdraw to direct trust away from Christ, whereas liberation comes through the Cross, prayer, fasting, confession, and a changed life. The failings of rulers also call the people to personal repentance rather than accusation alone. In marriage, travel, and business, believers should distrust self-interest, ask for God’s will, and accept that a refusal may conceal providential protection.

This evening, our subject will be answers to several fundamental questions that concern many people. As you know, I have told you before that I gathered them from questions raised by brothers and sisters about matters that trouble them in their lives.
I found that other people, too, are enlightened by these answers, and that is precisely why I clarified them. Such matters are useful; they carry a certain weight and can benefit people more broadly. So this evening we have our fourth lesson in the same style, so to speak.
What you are about to hear is a serious matter. It applies not only to the particular situation in which the question was asked, but to many other situations as well.
Listen to the question in summary: “Some time ago, I said something about someone. I accused him, but to this day I have not gone to ask his forgiveness.”
“I have learned, incidentally, that he has forgiven me. Am I now in good standing?” This is certainly not something that concerns only this particular person—I do not know whether it is a sister or a brother. In any case, it is a serious matter, and many people will find themselves entangled in it on that Day because they failed to take care to put Christ’s words properly into practice.
Forgiveness is good; this remission of the offense is good, so that Satan may not gain the advantage.
Yet the two parties remain at enmity. The other person has not made peace. The one who was wronged did his duty and, especially as a priest, refused to hold the offense against you. He even sent word to you, as you wrote: “I forgive him; I forgive you.”
But the offender may say, “Since he has forgiven me, what more will God require? Have I not been forgiven? What else is there?” Yet if that is your attitude, what compels you, what binds you, what holds you back from going to make metanoia—to bow before him and ask forgiveness? This is especially so when the other person holds a position of some standing, whether people regard him well or badly—I do not know. In any case, he has other qualities, he has a gift, and he is ordained.
This matter must be resolved. A similar case came before me years ago while I was speaking about salvation. I argued the point for nearly two hours, trying to explain it clearly enough for the person to understand that something is also required from the other side.
For I have a duty and an obligation to forgive you. I am obliged not to hold against you what you said to me. If what you said was true, I must take care to correct myself. If it was false, I should tell you, “Thank you very much for insulting and slandering me.” As I have said before, we could never fashion for ourselves the crown that is fashioned for us by our enemy’s slander, malice, and evil speech. All our good works are credited to our account in the other world.
The matter becomes clear in this way: The Jews crucified Christ. Did Christ bear them any malice? No, He forgave them. He even said to His Father, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” He further showed that He bore no malice that very afternoon, when He walked toward Emmaus with the two disciples. They rebuked Him, saying, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened there?” And He answered, “What things?” as though He did not know.
And He comes to them still bearing the wound in His side, the marks of the blows and everything else on His face, and there He says to them: "What things? I know nothing about it; I have forgotten it all."
Thus, upon the Cross, Christ declared that He had forgiven the Jews. But were they thereby forgiven? No, they were not. It is not enough for me to forgive you; you, too, must receive that forgiveness. When would they have been forgiven? If they themselves had asked forgiveness.
Don't you know what they suffered? Don't you know what came of it? Titus crucified them, and when there weren't enough crosses left, they pinned them up against the wall and nailed them there the way people nail up goatskins. You've seen it in the tanneries — that's how they nailed them up.
And why should I be the one to forgive you? You're the one who's obliged to come and ask me for forgiveness. And all the more so at a moment like this, when you're the one responsible: you brought me into temptation, you put me in a dilemma, you pushed me to the point of falling, because you wronged me, and I would have had every right to pay you back, to defend myself, and to do all sorts of other things.
I was wrong! I did not do it. So what good is it if I forgave you, but you showed no remorse? Therefore, if you are with us tonight, you ought to—and must—make amends. Go and find the person. Humble yourself before him, and before him alone, and say, “Forgive me. I thank you very much for not repaying me in kind. I do not know what came over me or how, in that moment, I was carried away.”
The saints showed us how it is done: they were the ones who had been wronged, and yet they went and found the person who wronged them and asked his forgiveness. Because whatever is loosed here is loosed there as well. Right now this bond has been loosed from one side only. From the other side it has not been loosed. And if you read what the Fathers say about people who departed from this world unreconciled, it is terrifying.
A person may then have to go to the other’s grave, make metanoia, weep, and ask forgiveness. He may have to offer memorial services, make offerings and vows, and undertake a great deal of labor—and even then we do not know whether he will be forgiven or whether this Gordian knot will be untied.
This is why the matter inspires fear and trembling. What the Apostle Paul said about it is not merely a proverb: “Do not let the sun go down on your anger.” Do not let the sun begin to set while you are still not at peace with your fellow human being.
You refuse even to say good morning—the greeting God gives us—or good evening, or to offer any sort of greeting at all. Yet the time of each person’s departure is uncertain. If we remain bound here, we shall also find ourselves bound there.
More generally, I would say that when a person sins, he sins in two directions. You do not sin only against your fellow human being; sin against another person may be committed through words, through physical violence, or even through the courts.
At the same time you are also sinning upward; you are sinning against God as well — the God who said, "Do not do this," who said to love your enemy, who told you to do this and this and this. You are not only breaking the commandment of love toward your neighbor; you are also breaking righteousness, the justice you owe to God.
There are two kinds of peace: peace with God and peace with our neighbor. That is why the Church, when she opens her heart, speaks of two kinds of peace: “For the peace from above,” “In peace let us pray to the Lord,” “Let us love one another,” and so on.
And in this way we confess the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Perhaps your situation is not exactly the same, but something similar happens to many people. They torment themselves, saying, “They offended me; they harmed me; they are to blame. He is younger; he is beneath me; he must come to me.” No, do not do that. You must tear down this malice that Satan has built up.
John Chrysostom—I have said this before, but since it is especially relevant here, let me repeat it—says the following: when two people exchange angry words and become upset, Satan holds each of them by the collar, so to speak—one with one hand and the other with the other—and will not let them come together, draw near to one another, ask forgiveness, and be reconciled in love.
Satan goes to one and says, “The other one must come first.” Then he goes to the other and says, “You are in the right; the other one must come first.” With this thought he keeps them both apart. But Christ comes between them and sets before them the bond of peace. He says that whoever runs forward first—whether he is in the right or not—to ask forgiveness and tear down that enmity should seize hold of this bond of peace.
Snatch it up, He says; take hold of this double bond that ties both sides together. And in fact He reminds us — and you know this yourselves — there is no finer beatitude than the beatitude of the peacemaker. Whether they step in directly themselves and bring peace to a situation, even at a cost to themselves, or whether they play the part of making peace between two people or more, even if they end up paying the price for it on top of everything else.
There is no greater or more beautiful blessing. Those of you who know the Beatitudes will remember that no other beatitude is expressed in such beautiful words as the one concerning the peacemakers: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” They resemble Christ, who sacrificed Himself and shed His blood to reconcile man with God. He calls them sons of God. And yet many of us not only fail personally to put an end to enmity, but also make no effort to intervene and bring peace between two people, three people, or within a...
...a family, or a married couple; instead, many times we even add fuel to the fire. Woe to us on the Day of Judgment! Such a person did no good, but only made the evil worse. There are many malicious people. Yet, as you know, many people have come to their senses because others became bridges, so to speak. They stepped into the middle and even resorted to a harmless falsehood—which is blessed in such a case—in order to bring about peace.
...of peace. And so, brother, I don't know where you stand in all this. Pay attention to it; see to it that you settle the matter while they are still alive, and don't fool yourself by saying, 'It was their duty to make it right.' But that was your duty too. And then the matter will be settled, this bond will be loosed, and it will not weigh on you in eternity. Because where will you find them, to ask their forgiveness? The stones, their grave, answer nothing. Show some contrition, and it will win you some mitigation. But not that it will acquit you. And how easily you could settle the whole thing right now, with a small bow, with an 'Evlogison' — a 'Bless me,' as the monks say. With one word only: 'Evlogison.' Yes, humble yourself.
Only one word. And see how Satan holds people captive through this false ego: “I am somebody; I will lose something,” and so forth. This is especially true when a person is in the right and asks forgiveness from the one who is in the wrong.
Satan comes along and says to you: “What are you doing? You’re only going to make him worse. If you ask forgiveness, he’ll think you’re a pushover,” so to speak. And this is satanic, the Fathers say. But you go ahead and ask forgiveness, and “you will heap coals of fire on his head.”
It is as though you placed a tray of burning coals upon his head. The devil may whisper one thing to him, but the Holy Spirit will say, “This man could have put out your eye, yet instead of putting out your eye, instead of doing you harm, instead of punishing you, he is even asking your forgiveness. Do you not think it is time to come to your senses?” This is the tray of burning coals upon his head of which Paul speaks in the twelfth chapter of Romans.
In any case, concerning this matter, I have said only a little — but from that little, understand a great deal.
Now we often hear about sorcerers, witches, spells—in other words, Satan’s evil designs and the snares of the devil.
We also hear that many people remove the evil eye by reciting certain prayers and supposedly deliver children, or even adults, from what is called the evil eye.
That is, by what power do they cast out demons? Does what I have said make sense? Because here we have two different cases. The Christian—the Orthodox Christian—and the Church say: “If you are under a spell or afflicted by the evil eye, go to the Church and do what the Church tells you.”
The Church has prayers, it has ways and methods and so on, to set free those who are afflicted by Satan's sorcery in general, and by the evil eye and by spells. But then we also see that someone went to the sorceress, and she undid the spell on the girl. And sure enough, she undid the spell on this gentleman, she undid the spell on that other man, and he came back to himself, he went back to his home, he went back to his wife. Someone else was sunk in drugs, or whatever it was; and another woman came back around the same way.
Or a little child suffers from an affliction that is clearly satanic, and as soon as a certain woman who does this work makes the sign of the Cross over the child and recites something over him...
The job, well, got taken care of. And the question comes to you: «By whose power?» They serve Satan an eviction notice. How is it, let's say, that Satan is put to death — deadened, drained of life — so that he no longer has any power? So is it not the Church alone, then? Can we go somewhere else as well and be rid of him there, and do those people have the power? And many times the Church doesn't have the power? This is my own thought; I'm putting it out there now.
Prayers, exorcisms, all sorts of things, miracles — and no result. Then they go to the sorcerer or the witch, and all at once everything is settled. All right, so what is going on here? Are there people who have the power to subdue Satan? Yes? No, there are no such people. Then how does it happen? Here is the secret: Satan is not driven out; he withdraws on his own, so as to deceive the person into thinking that here is the truth, here is the power.
He wants to draw you away from God and bring you into bondage there. He himself withdraws; no one casts him out.
In the course of my reading, I found an example of this in Saint Athanasius the Great.
You heard how Saint Athanasius the Great proves this from Holy Scripture and settles the matter. Christ says in the Gospel that if Satan casts out Satan, his kingdom cannot stand. If Satan were truly driving out Satan, his kingdom would collapse. But that is not what happens. As it is written in Mark 3:26, the sorcerer does not cast out the demon by some power of his own, nor does he command it to depart. Rather, the demon dwelling in the possessed person withdraws willingly and of its own accord, so that people may be deceived and run to sorcerers instead of turning to God.
So off you go to the witch. Never mind the one close by — the local one is no good, she can't do a thing. "This woman went to her and got better; that man went to the one nearby and got no better at all."
Whenever someone happens to be healed outside the Church, know that Satan’s deceit has been at work.
Notice one detail. I do not know whether you are aware of it, but black magic today is commonplace. If you go out into Attica, or up around Loutraki and other places, you will find professionals practicing black magic. I do not know what is happening today; everything seems bound by it.
So what is the difference between a sorcerer breaking such spells and the Church breaking them? Through this deception, the sorcerer may release the body, but he binds the soul. The Church releases both body and soul. Yet the Church requires you to fast, to pray, to repent, to confess, and to change your life, so that Satan may no longer have any claim upon you.
But when you go to the sorcerer, you do not have to do any of these things. You may remain just as you are; it does not matter. There is no need to begin living a Christian life, nor even to confess. The sorcerer will tell you whatever you want to hear.
But the Church will ask something of you: that the works of darkness have to stop, that you be cleansed, so that you can receive Holy Communion, which is the radical healing of both body and soul. Listen, when you hear about people who go running off to the witch or the sorcerer to have a spell undone, when you hear about people who run to the card-reader, or whoever else she may be, to the coffee-cup reader, so she can lift the evil eye off them and all the rest of it — you should be afraid of that sort of thing.
The Church has prayers against the evil eye, prayers against sorcery, and prayers for every kind of demonic affliction. If you take up the Great Book of Needs and read it, you will see how many different cases it addresses. It covers every concern that can trouble a person, every place where Satan may gain a foothold and turn things upside down.
Of course, as you know, sorcery and such things have power over people who are spiritually unarmed, not over Christians. Sorcery cannot seize a Christian. And when I say “Christian,” I do not mean someone who is a Christian only on an identity card; I mean a true Christian. Did the sorcery of Saint Cyprian have any power over Saint Justina?
And what happened? Did the spells get her? She was a young Christian girl, pure and a virgin, and she kept up the spiritual struggle — and in fact she was the one who made Saint Cyprian burn his books and become a saint, when before he had been a professor of sorcery. He saw his own weakness, and he saw that Christ is stronger than all the regiments of the demons.
All those, then, who suffer such things—whether at their weddings, at their children’s Baptisms, or on other occasions—are spiritually unarmed. They are what we might call lukewarm, insipid Christians, who offer no resistance through the grace of the Holy Spirit. And so Satan does whatever he wishes through human malice and human cooperation.
It is not human power that casts out a demon. As Saint Anthony the Great said so beautifully, it is not we who cast out demons—even though the saints do cast them out—but the Cross and the Crucified One. Are we the ones who do it? No: the Cross and the Crucified One. In the name of the crucified Jesus Christ, we put the demons to flight. But do we accomplish this by our own human power?
How, then, could those people do it by human power? They cannot. The deception is what I have already explained, and what Saint Athanasius the Great teaches: the demon deliberately withdraws and makes it appear that the other person possesses power, so that the sufferer will not go to the Church or have a relationship with God, but will run to human beings and remain spiritually bound. Does the sorcerer free him spiritually? No. Bodily, perhaps—yes.
Remember, because some people ask: "Will the person suffer?" This person suffers terribly from demonic possession, they say. Yes, they suffer. You've heard Katapinis on a recording, talking about this Maria he's had in his grip for years now.
He says, “All these torments I inflict upon her are like precious stones of gold; they will lead her into Paradise.”
This is the demon’s own admission. We consider such a condition horrifying—and it truly is horrifying for a human being to become the dwelling place of an unclean spirit. Yet the demon himself admits, “The things I do to her are like little stones of gold, which will carry her into Paradise.”
If, in any case, something similar is troubling you, keep this in mind. I will say one more thing on another subject.
Mr. Panagiotis, I truly did not want to say this, I confess, but I will dwell on one aspect: the anguish of the person who wrote this question.
Because I wanted to put an end to this discussion, since some people don't have two ears, they only have one. Even though God gave us two ears. You listen to one side, then you listen to the other, and then you're the boss — you're the one who makes the decision.
“Mr. Panagiotis, your recent answers concerning unworthy clergy have troubled me, because until now I had heard only one side. Please allow me to return to the subject. I do not raise this as a barb”—he adds in parentheses—“or to provoke you. I ask it simply as a sincere question.”
“Since the Lord is Master of His Church, why does He permit corrupt men to rise to positions of authority within the Church? I would be very grateful if you would help me understand.”
I told you beforehand that I do not want to open up a discussion, but I will take a passage from a holy man that resolves the matter. We tend to narrow the issue at this point, regardless of what has been said and what has been said in reply, back and forth.
Regardless of all that, I want to emphasize this: we forget that the young girl has an uncle, if you will allow me the expression—that this dear little soul who is in danger has an uncle; she has God. Many people forget this, and we think that we are the ones who must fight the battle, that we are the ones who must help her.
So there is another side to this, my dear friends, which I have mentioned many times, but which has not yet been taken to heart.
Is it because they are worthy of authority that God appoints them to rule His people? No, we say. They gain power because they are schemers, because they have connections and influence, because of wickedness, and so on.
God permits them; He appoints them to rule over the people. But it is because the peoples themselves are wicked that He gives them such high priests and such rulers. And he brings in a verse from Jeremiah, chapter 3, verse 15: "For I will give you, says God, rulers according to your own hearts." Now let's move on and be taught.
Would you like me to read it again? Anyone who wants to can look it up, because this isn't my own idea. You'll find it in Saint Athanasius the Great, in the one hundred twenty-first question, in the dialogue with Antiochus the Duke. That's where you'll find it; that's where you'll find this answer. Others have wrestled with this situation too. It isn't something new; it has always been so.
In the third century, Saint Athanasius the Great answers: “Does God appoint these men to govern the people because they are worthy of authority? No. Because the people are wicked, He gives them such high priests and rulers. For God says through Jeremiah, ‘I will give you rulers according to your hearts.’” Jeremiah 3:15.
Do you pray? Add prayer upon prayer. Do you fast? Add fasting upon fasting. Do you practice self-restraint? Add still greater self-restraint. Do you live chastely? Whatever good you are doing—praying or anything else—add to it, add to it, add to it. See to the correction of every detail of your life. Be as watchful as you can, because otherwise Satan will make fools of us.
We are the ones at fault. If we change, our country will change, and our Church will change. If we do not change, neither the rulers of the state nor the rulers of the Church will change.
That is my answer in this case. God knows; He does not discover afterward who is going to rise to power. He knows beforehand, yet He takes no action to prevent it. Why? Because, the saint says, the people do not deserve better rulers.
And this is true not only in the Church, but also in the state. For, as you know, we all turn to one another instead of turning together toward Him. We all lay the blame on the politicians or the clergy, but not on ourselves.
Things will be corrected and put in order if each of us turns to Christ and says: “I am unworthy, my Lord, for You to give me either a better ruler in the state or a better ruler in the Church. Forgive me. I repent; do whatever You deem best.”
If we believe what these holy men say, then everything will be explained. But when we do not believe it and simply carry on with our affairs, our way of life, and all the rest, we do not deserve rulers any better than these.
That is what the holy men say. I will not enlarge upon it. I am simply giving the established answer to this matter, so that no one may think I am trying to stir things up because of what happened in the past few days.
I have another question here. It reads: “Mr. Panagopoulos, I have a request.” Pay attention to the details. “There is something I want, and I like it, and it is to my advantage.” Did you hear that? “I have a request that concerns me. I want something, and I like it, and it is to my advantage. Should I pray to God,” the person asks, “and how should I pray, if this concerns someone I am considering for Holy Matrimony?” Notice how the matter is framed, because this way of thinking has ruined many people.
“This thing that concerns me is something I like, and it is to my advantage.” Therefore, since I have already measured it, weighed it, examined it, and decided that it benefits me and that I like it, what further need do I have? Whom should I ask?
I will simply call God in tomorrow, when I am to marry this person, so that He may sign His name and place the wedding crowns upon us. So I ask in return: “Since you like this person, and since you have examined the matter and decided that it is to your advantage, why are you asking me?”
A little voice deep down is crying out, “What if I am mistaken?” I do not know whether you noticed how the question is phrased: “Should I pray, since I have already made certain of everything? Should I pray to God at all? What am I supposed to say to Him, and how should I pray?” In other words, I am being asked to supply the very words of the prayer.
So, the matter concerns someone being considered for Holy Matrimony. If the questioner is a man, he is evidently saying: “I have met a woman. I like her. The match is advantageous, we have discussed everything thoroughly, and that settles it.” Or, if the questioner is a woman: “There is a man who is courting me honorably. I like him,” and so on.
If you told me that we had come to ask God, I would be glad for us to put it that way.
You know, this subject has many branches. It does not concern only Holy Matrimony. It also includes questions such as: Should I make this journey? Should I leave and go abroad? Should I start a business? Should I enter into this partnership? Should I buy this thing?
A person faces countless questions in life, and should never judge them simply by whether they are pleasing or advantageous.
For man is limited, my dear friends. He is often deceived, and beneath a sweet coating there may be poison. How do we administer a bitter pill such as quinine? We give it a sweet coating, though inside it contains poison. So it is with many things. Blessed are those who have humility.
Even when they see that it is daylight, they are willing to ask Christ: “Lord, is it day or night? Could it be that I am not seeing clearly?”
For many people, guided by the flesh, the ego, self-interest, pleasure, and so forth, see white as black and black as white. Before I say anything more, I would like to share with you the teaching of a Holy Father on this subject.
And let me point this out to you, since I am being asked — and I must answer within the limits of what I know — on this subject of marriage. A Holy Father says: «Just as Christ taught us to pray and to say to God, "Thy will be done" — for in this the Lord was training us — so He Himself also prayed, saying to the Father, "Let not my will be done, but Thine."»
Thus, in His prayer to God His Father, which we read in Luke, chapter 22, verse 42, Christ said: “Not My will, but Yours be done.” And this holy man says that Christ left us an example, instructing and training us so that we too may learn to say, “Thy will be done.”
I like the way you have set out your situation here, and it seems good for me. What I mean is, I want my own will to be done, because I have considered it carefully and weighed everything. Yes—but you can see only so far. You cannot see around the corner. Marriage is a road unknown to you. You can see the first day, but you cannot see the second day of marriage, nor the third, nor any of its twists and turns.
He sees all these things. Therefore, if you are prudent, fear God, take Him into account, and reverence Him, you must ask Him in return and say, as it says here, “Thy will be done.” Yet we human beings often ask God for things that we think are beneficial to us, though they are not.
This is what we want to say to him: Lord, we want this position, we want to go there, we want this one, we want that one.
We think these things are good for us and are distressed when our request is not granted. But when God does grant the request, the Father says, we discover that its outcome has greatly harmed us. The very thing we asked for proved to be our ruin.
But we discover this only afterward. God, in His foreknowledge—the Lord who knows beforehand how all things will end—often, in His goodness, does not heed our prayer, because He is working for what is truly beneficial to us.
Many times we throw ourselves on the ground like children and cry, "Give me this!" and we carry on and make a scene and so forth; and He doesn't give it, he says, because He loves us and is heading off a disaster before it reaches us. "Which is not good — to force God in our requests." So don't try to force God's hand.
We once discussed a case, while speaking about good logismoi—good inner thoughts—in which Eulogios tried to force God to give money to someone. We saw the consequences, did we not? So do not do this. The Father says: “It is not good to force God concerning what we think is best. Rather, we have been taught to pray and ask that not our will, but God’s will, be done.”
For He desires all to be saved and grants us whatever contributes to our salvation, whatever helps us toward salvation. Drawing courage from these words of this Holy Father, I too say: Pray, whatever the circumstances may be. No matter how promising everything looks, and no matter how many favorable terms you have secured for yourself, do not put your trust in them.
Those conditions exist today; you do not know what tomorrow will bring. Ask Him as well—the One who has compassion, who cares for you, and who loves your soul—to prevent you if that is best, for He has the means to do so, or to make the way easier if that is best, for He has the means to do that as well.
For many marriages have failed disastrously, even though they began with the best of prospects. Later, people became disillusioned, and, as you know, there have been suicides and other such tragedies. Or else what happens is just as people say: “I was completely taken aback. I never expected it from him; I never expected it from her; I never expected it from that family,” and so on.
Or perhaps I myself have been deceived, because my ego stood in the way and we present ourselves as though we know everything.
Since the question here concerns a prospective spouse, I would also like to add this: Marriage should not be brought about merely by human effort, but with God’s approval. Do not say, “I became involved with this woman or this man; I gave my whole soul to it, overturned this and that, and created happiness for myself.” Do not be deceived.
Because you can see how many unhappy, twisted situations come about when one person builds on the ruins of another. What are you going to build on top of ruins? What will you build — happiness? You've divorced your wife, and now you're going to take another one. And how are you going to look at this other woman you take? Won't she have the same fears the first one had? Don't those fears bring you unhappiness? And however much we may want to say today, 'I've made my own happiness, I've found it, I'm holding on to it, and it isn't going to slip away from me' — these things are laughable.
But we avoid hardship. We fear that God may burden us with a wife who does not serve our outward interests, or with a husband who does not satisfy us outwardly, because most of us marry for the sake of appearances before the world.
“How much does he earn? What work does he do?” Not, “What kind of person is he?” but, “How much does he earn? What work does he do? Is he handsome? Is she beautiful?” We look at the outward person, not the inward. A man, therefore, should bear in mind that there is an Eve intended for him, and he is her Adam. Likewise, a woman should bear in mind that there is an Adam intended for her, and that she, as Eve, is the rib of that Adam.
Adam—yes, that particular Adam: that is the point. Only God knows who that Adam is, and only God knows who that Eve is. In Proverbs, chapter 19, verse 14, it says: “Fathers divide house and property among their children, but from God a wife is joined to her husband.”
Property, houses, and fields, it says, are ultimately inherited from our parents. But it is God, it says, who will give a man his wife. Yet who allows God to find him a wife, if he does not believe that there are Adams meant for his daughters?
And what man believes that there is an Eve out there meant for him? Who really believes such a thing? Some of them say they want to go about it by God's own hand, and then they're left on the shelf. Go and weigh the carats of the pride these people are carrying — that's why they're left on the shelf, because they've sent God a list up there: I want him six foot tall, he has to comb his hair this way, he has to dress that way, and so on.
And God will not be blackmailed.
I do not have with me tonight a letter I received from the provinces, so that I could read it to you. It is from an elderly man whom I know. He has children, including two unmarried daughters who are Christian, honorable, and respectable.
The man writes to me in tears, as is evident from the end of his letter.
A father is writing to me right now, and he's hurt. It broke my heart. "Look," he says, "see if there might be some Christian young man among the people around you. I have my two girls, the ones you know, and they're lovely girls," he says, "and so on."
“But they have not married yet, and I will tell you why: they want an office worker, or they want a businessman, and so on. That is why they have remained unmarried until now; otherwise they could have married many times over.” Very well, then. When you present God with a model describing exactly what sort of man—or woman—you want, He does not accept such prescriptions.
You will remain unmarried altogether, until you are climbing the rooftops in desperation. The real question, then, is this: what will God arrange in His providence?
But today's generation doesn't believe this either. They'd rather marry their own sister, they'd rather marry their own aunt — that's what today's society is like.
He wants to marry his niece, he wants to marry a divorced woman—he wants this, that, and the other. And I am to say nothing, to stand aside, and in the end give them wedding crowns for their corruption and crown them in marriage. I am only there to arrange the civil documents, the inheritance, the salaries, and who receives the pension. But on no other matter am I allowed to have an opinion. That is precisely why you see what you see, hear what you hear, and live through what we are all living through.
Now then, this is not the only testimony we have. There is another beautiful testimony, one that puts even greater emphasis on this. Those of you who read Scripture should have come across the book of Tobit in your Bibles.
When the Archangel Raphael was guiding Tobias to recover the money his father had lent to someone, so that his father could live out the rest of his life, the father had already become blind. The poor man could not go and collect the money himself, so he prayed to God. God then sent the Archangel Raphael—you may know this Archangel—who took Tobias with him. They traveled to that foreign land and recovered the money. There the Archangel also arranged a marriage for the young man, to a girl who, if I remember correctly, had already been married five or six times. On every wedding night, the bridegroom had been carried dead from the bridal chamber.
And this same fate was surely waiting for Tobias too. Even so, the Archangel says to him — to Tobias, once he found out about this, that he was in danger of dying on that first night — he says this to him, to give him courage: "Do not be afraid," he tells him, "because she has been prepared for you from all eternity, before the boy was born, before the girl was born."
It is there. I will read it again: “Do not be afraid, for she has been prepared for you from all eternity.” Tobit 6:18; those of you who study the Scriptures will find it. Have a good break. So that is not the issue. My heartfelt wish is that you discuss everything properly and present your proposal properly as well. But ask the Lord, because there is a possibility that you may be mistaken. And if He tells you no—and He knows how to tell you no, because some people ask, “How will I know that the answer is negative?”—does God not know how to find a way to give you a negative answer? You may be waiting for him at the church for the wedding crowning, and he may not come at all. Could that not happen? Does God not know of any way? God knows a thousand ways. Let us not fall into the delusion of saying that God will not find some way.
Therefore, however carefully you arrange and stitch everything together, however delicate and golden the fabric may appear, you must still turn to Him. For tomorrow, once you are married and bound up in it, you will also drink the little cup of marriage’s bitterness—because marriage contains not only honey, but bitterness as well.
And bitterness as well. Some people do not understand these things; they gather only the honey and fail to notice the bitterness that is there. What does the cup given during Holy Matrimony symbolize? It symbolizes the bitterness of married life—its hardships, tribulations, persecutions, tears, everything. This is not something merely to play with or form opinions about; many things are discussed concerning it. So pay close attention to it. I wish you a blessed reunion, and many blessed reunions to come.
May you arrange everything well, and may it turn out as you hope, bringing satisfaction to your soul. But if the Lord says no, then if you would have thanked Him once for saying yes, thank Him a billion times for saying no, because He is guarding you and protecting you from disaster.
A person ought to thank God far more for God's no than for His yes. But instead we say, "My prayer isn't being heard." Are you praying seriously? Is your telephone out of order? Your prayer is heard — but it may be that what you're asking for shouldn't happen right now, or perhaps shouldn't happen at all.
Congratulations, Mr. Kallousenis, and thank you. And just as we have our own requests, so regarding these matters as well, I pray that God will give the best answer—for what is beneficial, both temporal and eternal. Amen.

Βέβαια, όπως ξέρετε, τα μάγια και τα λοιπά έχουν δύναμη επί των αόπλων ανθρώπων, όχι επί των Χριστιανών. Χριστιανό δεν τον πιάνουν μάγια. Όταν λέω εγώ «είμαι χριστιανός» στην ταυτότητα, λέω τον χριστιανό τον πραγματικό. Την έπιασαν την Αγία Ιουστίνη τα μάγια του Αγίου Κυπριανού;
Δεν είναι δύναμις ανθρώπου που εκβάλλει το δαιμόνιο. Άλλωστε, να ξέρετε, όπως ωραιότατα έχει πει και ο Μέγας Αντώνιος, δεν είμαστε εμείς που εκβάλλουμε τα δαιμόνια, διότι οι Άγιοι εκβάλλουν δαιμόνια, αλλά είναι, λέει αυτός, ο Σταυρός και ο Εσταυρωμένος που εκβάλλουν τα δαιμόνια. Το κάνουμε εμείς, λέει; Ο Σταυρός και ο Εσταυρωμένος. Εν ονόματι Ιησού Χριστού Εσταυρωμένου, λέει, φυγαδεύουμε τα δαιμόνια εμείς; Το κάνουμε εμείς σαν άνθρωποι;
Αυτό το κάτι που με απασχολεί και μου αρέσει και μου είναι συμφέρον. Κατά συνέπεια, εφόσον εγώ το μέτρησα, το ζύγισα, το εξέτασα και το βρήκα συμφέρον και μου αρέσει, τι ανάγκη έχω από εδώ και κάτω; Ποιον να ρωτήσω;
Απλώς θα καλέσω τον Θεό αύριο για την πρώτη προσώπου για γάμο να υπογράψει, να βάλει τα στέφανα. Το ρωτάω παρακάτω: «Εφόσον εμένα μ' αρέσει και εφόσον εγώ εξέτασα και μου είναι συμφέρον», τότε, για αυτή την περίπτωση, γιατί με ρωτάτε εμένα;
Αυτό το θέμα, ξέρετε, έχει πολλά παρακλάδια. Δεν είναι μόνο το θέμα του γάμου, είναι και στο θέμα: να κάνω το ταξίδι αυτό; Να φύγω, να πάω στο εξωτερικό, να κάνω μια επιχείρηση; Να κάνω αυτόν τον συνεταιρισμό, να αγοράσω αυτό το πράγμα;
Τις περιουσίες, λέγει, τα σπίτια, τα χωράφια, τα κληρονομούμε, λέει, από τους γονείς μας, από τους γονείς μας τελικά. Η γυναίκα όμως θα τη δώσει, λέει, ο Θεός. Αλλά ποιος επιτρέπει στον Θεό να του βρει γυναίκα, άμα δεν πιστεύει ότι για τις κόρες του υπάρχουνε Αδάμ;
