This talk on obedience was given at the Holy Monastery of Philotheou. Perhaps they heard the things the Lord said while He was among them. But at that moment He opened their nous—their spiritual understanding—and sent them the Holy Spirit, who proceeds
from the Father. Then they began to understand all that the Lord had said and all the wonders He had worked; they began to feel it, to live it, to receive illumination, and to recognize the very path of their Teacher.
When Christ grants us His grace and His blessing, sends us too His Holy Spirit, and opens our nous and our heart, then we will understand, then we will feel, and then our soul will melt within us.
He has counted us worthy to know the great mercy He has shown us in His compassion and love. He has counted us worthy to follow the holy path of the monastic life, and to live in purity and virginity,
with self-denial and complete dedication. We have entered upon the radiant path, the path of the Fathers, a life in keeping with our true nature. Glory to God. Let us pray and entreat Him to open our nous,
our spiritual intellect, so that we may thank Him worthily and fittingly. May He open our nous so that we may understand and grasp the greatness hidden within monastic life: prayer and temperance, perfect obedience and self-denial, stillness and freedom from distraction.
There are realities there which the world has never seen. They are known only within the treasury of monastic life. Thank you. In the writings of the Holy Fathers of the Desert, in this great
treasury of wisdom, we read and reflect on how intensely the venerable Desert Fathers struggled through ascetic discipline and tears, and how a monk’s tears cleanse both soul and body.
More particularly, the whole of ascesis, the ascetic discipline, aims at the purity that leads the monk’s soul to touch divine beauty and heavenly loveliness. When the monk’s nous is closed and sealed, it flies very low;
and when it flies low, it is caught and ensnared in the devil’s traps and dragged away captive by various passions. When the passions persist for a long time, it becomes impossible to move beyond them. They form a barrier. When God opens our mind, we see how enslaved we are to the passions.
We see the man of dust—how earthly and downtrodden he is—and then begins the concern and the struggle to put the old man to death, together with the sowing of the seed and the travail of spiritual pregnancy. As Abba Isaac the Syrian says, when the soul is about to give birth to Christ—to the new man in
Christ—it experiences strange and wondrous things within its life. Just as the pains of a pregnant woman announce the approaching birth, so do these strange and wondrous holy pains. The monk’s pains announce the coming of the spiritual life in Christ,
within the nous and the heart.
But to reach that point, and to go beyond it, one must labor. One must begin with the simple things before moving on to the greater ones. The monk must begin by cutting off his own will with exactness. The foundation is dug, the first stone is laid, and then the building rises. When a monk first arrives as a novice,
the foundation he must lay is a true and excellent understanding of obedience. This means cutting off his own will and practicing self-denial. If he does not lay the sound foundation of obedience, he will accomplish nothing, however much the enemy of truth may prompt him to study lofty teachings,
pursue hesychia, or undertake ascetic struggles. Without obedience and reverence, nothing can even begin. This is your great task. Cutting off your own will is the mark and expression of humility. Unless a person humbles himself, he cannot be saved; it is through humility that he is saved. Look upon my humility and my toil, and forgive all my sins.
Through this very obedience, the monk sets out on his great journey. And where is he going? To the threshold at the right hand of God.
And He became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross. Therefore God also highly exalted Him and bestowed upon Him the name which is above every name.
The highest degree is His obedience to His heavenly Father unto death—even death on the Cross. To be crucified, in the spiritual sense, means putting one’s own will to death. Unless a person dies to himself, he cannot rise. After the Crucifixion comes the Resurrection. Christ died upon the Cross, and afterward came the glorious Ascension. In the same way, unless the monk cuts off his own will and does the will of his elder,
his spiritual father, he will never taste the Resurrection—that beautiful, many-splendored, wondrous, sublime, angelic, and heavenly taste. The devil works upon us in many ways concerning obedience, urging us to do our own will, and in this way he causes us the greatest harm. He poisons us by pouring into us that demonic poison of self-will. From this arise the many delusions
that operate throughout a person’s life. The Life of a Monk. If you bring rest to your Elder, you bring rest to God; if you do not bring rest to your Elder, neither do you bring rest to God. See what brings rest to the spiritual Elder: when the obedient disciple completely renounces his own will, he begins to bring rest to the Elder and to God. Father Palamon says,
“He who has perfect obedience need not concern himself with observing the commandments of God, because through perfect obedience he has fulfilled all the commandments of God.
We have read the lives of monks under obedience, and we marvel at them. And we ask, “What exactly did this obedient monk do? ” He cuts off his own will, and by that alone he becomes holy. I will tell you of a miracle. A Christian had a daughter who was possessed by a demon. He took her to many doctors, psychiatrists, and others, but no treatment helped her.
A friend of his, a good Christian devoted to monasticism, advised the girl’s father: “Do not keep running around; do not waste your efforts on doctors. There is only one remedy. ” “And what is it? ” “Obedient monks come down here to the marketplace to sell their handicrafts. Go down there, and when you find a young disciple,
pretend that you want to buy something. Tell him that you have no money with you and say, ‘Come to my house and I will pay you. ’ When he comes to the house,” “ask him to pray for your daughter, and she will be healed.
By divine providence, when the father went down to the marketplace, he saw an obedient disciple who came from that very city and was the son of a prominent man. His elder had told him, “Take these baskets, my child, and sell them one by one; you must not sell them all together. In this way, the elder wanted to train him in humility. All the people of the city would see that this was the son of their prominent neighbor,
and he would be humbled in their eyes by the poverty of his monastic state. The father approached the young monk and said, “How much are you selling them for, Father? ” “Such and such a price. ” “Come to my house so that I can pay you, because I have no money with me. ” “May it be blessed.
The disciple set out, and the two of them went to the house. The demon in the girl heard that the young monk was coming, perceived the one who would overthrow it, and rebelled. As the disciple entered through the door, the girl rushed out in a demonic frenzy and struck him across the face. The disciple, putting the Gospel into practice,
turned the other cheek—the other side of his face—and she struck him once again. He turned back again to offer it to him from the other side. But the possessed girl fell to the ground, and the demon cried out, “The commandment of Christ is driving me out! ” That is, his putting Christ’s commandment into practice drove out the demon, and the girl was delivered.
Behold the miracle of obedience; behold the miracle of a good obedient disciple. He raised no objection to going down to the city—to his own city, his own homeland—to sell his wares in the marketplace, poorly dressed, carrying baskets, haggling and crying out, “Handiwork for sale!
Yet the spiritual progress born of obedience was with him, because his obedience was exact—and exact obedience is the mark of perfection.
Through obedience, the novice begins the road that leads to Golgotha and the Crucifixion.
From his elder he learns prayer, keeping vigil, nepsis—watchfulness—and the wisdom of ascesis, the ascetic discipline. Through these he is brought to perfection. When a disciple has obedience, he has humility; he keeps vigil and prays,
he loves and keeps silence, and he attains a great spiritual measure. A spiritual beauty fills his whole being, because he does not care whether others understand him. That is not his concern; his only concern is how to put into practice, in every possible way,
whatever leads to salvation. Others see his beauty and spiritual fragrance—those, of course, whose spiritual eyes are open—and so they are edified. And the more he lives without seeking glory, the more God makes him known and praises him.
I pray that, through our prayer, God may open our nous, our spiritual intellect, so that we may see how we shall depart from this world and, at our departure, enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Contemplate the Passion of Christ: why Christ was crucified, how He made atonement for
mankind and granted the Resurrection, and what will take place at His Second Coming. Hell awaits those on His left, while those on His right—the saved and the saints—will receive such glory, shining with the reflected glory of Christ.
To reach that place and know all these things inwardly, Christ must open our nous, our spiritual intellect. But for Him to open it, we must give Him the key. The key He requires is our very self. We must give Him ourselves and surrender our own wills, so that He may work upon them in His own way. Yet we do not place this key—our self-will—into the hands of Christ.
And so, with our nous closed and darkened, we will accomplish nothing of spiritual worth. Time passes—the years, the months, the days, the minutes—and we draw nearer to death. The only certainty we have in this life is death. Everything else is uncertain. Let us pray, and especially during our vigil let us pray fervently,
with nepsis—watchfulness—and with full awareness. And when we see the fruit of prayer, we will apply ourselves even more. Prayer is the light that illumines and opens the mind. Let us continually contemplate that fearful hour. People like to busy themselves,
worrying about many things and becoming distracted by them. And you sit and reflect, saying, “Where is this world going? How completely their minds—their spiritual understanding—are shut up within these things. And many people, when illness places them in danger of death, wish for their sufferings to come to an end as quickly as possible.
They have reached the point where they think everything ends. Then, lacking illumination, they do not know that from that very moment... The Ascension of the Theotokos, the Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Gospel, the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple, the Annunciation, the Annunciation, the Annunciation.
“I would not be a servant of Christ. ” There is also the Apostle Paul. This is why God removed us from the world. That is why He brought us out of the stench of the world and brought each one of us here. And He will lead us into the light of the life to come. Let us pray that we may
understand what prayer truly is, so that we may pray in truth and with full awareness. We should know that our angel also prays with us, joining his own prayers to ours on our behalf. He rejoices because we are communing with God, and he carries our prayers to the divine throne. Our prayers are attentive when they are offered with nepsis—watchfulness—and awareness; and when they are also bathed in tears,
they become a sweet fragrance.
The monk offers himself as a sacrifice for the love of Christ through his elder; and through obedience to Christ and to the elder, we are led into the rest of Christ. And when we have brought Him rest,
then rest in the Kingdom of God awaits us. Let us cast our own will out of our lives and transform it into obedience and pure confession. A confession filled with insinuations, with things withheld and kept apart, seals those things up and drives them into the subconscious. That is not the way.
Pure and sincere confession brings about an inward transformation in the person who confesses. Whoever keeps things hidden within does not experience the beauty and loveliness of a soul relieved of its burden through pure confession. I kept everything open and clear. No one can deceive God.
We may deceive the elder, but never God. When the devil is
exposed and comes out into the open, he tries to hide as
quickly as possible, fearing that he will be seen and struck
down. So it is with the devil: when the sin, the fault, the snare, and the deception come out of a person’s mouth, that person is set free. Pure and sincere confession, genuine obedience, the cutting off of one’s most deeply rooted self-will, and ascesis—ascetic discipline—undertaken in obedience lead the obedient monk to spiritual progress and to the fulfillment of the purpose of his monastic life.
If the foundation of pure confession, obedience, and ascesis is not laid from the beginning, if the monk and obedient disciple does not place it within his heart from the outset so as to preserve it to the end, he will not reach his goal. May our understanding be opened, so that with the nous, the spiritual intellect, we may continually keep our purpose before us. And when we have brought rest to the soul of the elder and have his
blessing—the prayer he offers for us, as we say—we will make spiritual progress throughout the rest of our lives, and Christ will praise us before the Angels. This is the great and all-perfect One whose footsteps we follow;
this is the matter of our salvation. In view, of course, of my departure, I ask you to be as watchful as you can. Guard as a treasure all the fatherly counsels I have given you, and you will become rich. Christ left us His Apostles,
because the words of Christ remain alive within us; and whoever has obedience carries his elder within him.
May the blessing of an elder who prays for his obedient disciples also be granted to us. I beseech you, my children—and you,
for your part. The world needs words filled with the grace of God, words that will enter deeply into people, so that they may be born anew and
prepare themselves for the great encounter. The spirit of the age is deeply opposed to Christ... What is needed is even a little labor according to the Gospel.
The harvest is plentiful; may Christ grant laborers. I am the least and unworthy, and unless the Lord builds, we labor in vain. If God does not illumine us, we cannot illumine others; and if God does not sanctify us, we cannot sanctify anyone. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.” Everything begins with God alone.
Through the people of God, His gifts are conveyed to the fullness of the Church. I would like you to pray for me, that Christ may bring His work to completion, and pray that I may return in good health. Humbly, according to my duty as your father, I will pray for you; and I ask you, in your love, to pray for me.
Pray for me, wretched, unworthy, and miserable as I am. I have never made a true beginning—neither in repentance nor in renewal. Through your prayers, may I too make a beginning.
Hold fast to these counsels and to what the Holy Spirit enlightened us to say, and take heed to yourselves.
During my absence, as always, I have left the spiritual fathers here for confession, instruction, and obedience.
