Homily: The Holy Mountain. Delivered abroad.

The subject of our talk today will be the Holy Mountain. The Holy Mountain is a special place, a place set apart.

There they live as monastics, as people of God wholly dedicated to Him.

They are people who, for the love of God, chose to serve Him and worship Him with all their strength, so that they might become holy. ... and at the same time to help the world through their prayers

and their good example. Becoming a monk is not so easy. First and foremost, it is a calling from God. Yet God’s callings are not compulsory. This place, the Holy Mountain, was chosen by the Most Holy Theotokos. The Most Holy Theotokos, it is said,

was also given a portion by lot when the Apostles cast lots to determine where each of them would preach Christ. And the lot of the Most Holy Theotokos fell upon Mount Athos. According to the Athonite tradition, the Most Holy Theotokos visited this mountain. It was inhabited by idolaters, and when they beheld the Mother of the Lord,

they marveled at her beauty. They said that only a goddess could possess such beauty. The Most Holy Theotokos blessed this mountain and, as her own garden, filled it with people dedicated to God, living in virginity and purity. To safeguard these children of hers in her garden, so that they could worship God without hindrance,

it was her will that it should remain under the Avaton—closed and protected from anything that might obstruct the monks’ sanctifying purpose. And so, for more than a thousand years, the Holy Mountain has remained inviolate and inaccessible to women. It has instilled in people, and especially in women, reverence, love,

and awe toward the Holy Mountain.

Furthermore, the Most Holy Theotokos preserved—or rather safeguarded—the holiness of her children, the monks, by excluding not only women but every female animal as well, so that the monks might devote themselves to their monastic duties without hindrance, distraction, or worldly care. And in this way they advance toward holiness.

Now let us look upon the Holy Mountain. Transport yourselves there through contemplation, and visit the mountain at night. Look at what happens in the world at night: sinful places of entertainment and so many other things, where the demons celebrate and run riot,

plunging human souls into Hell and debauchery. Those places blaze with lights and are filled with demonic worship. But when we travel in spirit to the Holy Mountain at night, we see little lights shining in every monastery, every hermitage, and every cave. At night, those little lights are nothing other than churches,

lit by candles and vigil lamps, where the monks celebrate the Divine Liturgy and pray not only for themselves, but for the whole world. Many monastic centers existed in the past. But because they were not protected by the rule of the Avaton—the prohibition against women entering— In that place, not one remained standing. With the passing of time and through the work of the devil, all the others gradually disappeared.

Only this Holy Mountain of Athos remained, and through the providence of the Most Holy Theotokos, who secured it for us by means of the Avaton, it still exists in the world today. As you yourselves will know from what you have read, great men have lived the ascetic life on this blessed mountain: men of learning, men skilled in the arts, and simple people as well.

But God excludes no one from His holiness when a person struggles as he should in order to attain it. Great men practiced ascesis there, and every cobbled path of the Holy Mountain has surely been trodden by holy feet—by people who labored through hardship, toil, and often many years of ascetic discipline. Indeed, all their food and necessities

had to be carried as burdens, in sacks upon their backs. Then came their duties, the all-night vigils, and all the other ascetic struggles, undertaken above all within the discipline of obedience. Many monks were counted worthy of great gifts of grace.

Alongside this living treasure, which is the monks themselves, we also have the treasure of Byzantium. Here we find holy, wonderworking icons, which came miraculously to the Holy Mountain; and the protection of the Most Holy Theotokos is manifest in every age and in the life of every monk. In the past, holy women—queens known for their piety and holiness—wished to enter Mount Athos, to walk upon it, and perhaps even to remain there.

They brought holy relics with them, as did Mara, the mother of Mehmed the Conqueror, who conquered Constantinople. She was a devout Serbian woman. When her son captured Constantinople and Turkish barbarity was laying waste everything sacred and holy in that holy city, Mara, that devout woman and queen,

strove with all her longing, love, and effort to rescue as many sacred treasures as possible from the devastation. She kept many things from the churches in her own possession and guarded them. And at one point she said to her son, “My son, I am weary of being here and seeing all this plundering and the impiety of the descendants of Hagar. I want to withdraw into stillness.

” “Yes, Mother,” he said to her. “Go. Withdraw into stillness. Take all of Macedonia, collect its revenues, and live there. Become a nun—do whatever you wish. ” She then sent a great many holy relics to Mount Athos, especially the Precious Gifts of the Magi, which were in her possession. As a holy queen, she wished to offer them to the monastery with her own hands. She wished to present them to the monks at the monastery

and also to venerate the Mother of God on the Holy Mountain. She set sail from Constantinople and arrived at Mount Athos, at the quay of the Monastery of Saint Paul, intending to go up to the monastery. She notified the monks that she had arrived and was on her way up. The monks immediately made ready—the priests and all the others. The monks came down to meet the queen in a procession of honor, carrying the liturgical fans and wearing their vestments.

When Mara and her attendants met the monks, at a place between the monastery and the landing, this holy queen heard an unseen voice saying to her: “Mara, Mara, there is another Queen here, and you must turn back. At once, with boundless reverence and love, she placed those holy and Precious Gifts into the hands of the abbot and the priests. With profound reverence, she bowed to the ground before the Most Holy Theotokos,

kissed the sanctified soil of Mount Athos, and returned with the greatest respect to her ship. She then departed for Macedonia. There she became a nun and lived in stillness until the end of her life.

Long ago, Mount Athos had a population of more than thirty thousand monks. One monastery alone had two thousand monks within it. Mount Athos was filled to overflowing. There you would have seen holiness and sanctity. Those spiritual people were filled with gifts from God. Mount Athos helped the world; it is a harbor of salvation. People kept coming to visit it, and they still come today, as we can see. In those days, this was through the holiness of those monks.

But even now, the mission of Mount Athos is most sacred. We see indifferent people who come merely out of curiosity and for similar reasons. Yet they are changed and spiritually reborn, and they return home completely transformed. And they pass on the spiritual benefit of their experience to their families and acquaintances.

These people come and marvel as they look upon the monks. They see how young they are and say, “How can these men, these young men, overcome sin? How do they preserve themselves in purity and remain clean and angelic? Why can we not exercise self-restraint even in this or that matter, while these young men—with their education, their degrees, their youth, and their good looks—live in ascesis here on Mount Athos, often within a monastery and enclosed by four walls? At night they keep vigil; by day they labor.

They renounce their own will, struggle to acquire virtue, humble themselves, and surrender their freedom for the sake of the love of Christ. Their faces shine with purity. Those visitors are deeply challenged by this and say, “Why, then, are we unable to do the same? We cannot do such a thing. When I was in the desert, a man came to me and said, “Father, how can you live here? ” I smiled at him and said, “Why? Can I not live here?

Even if I were given the finest things, I could not bear to remain among them at all. ” And I told him, “Even if you gave me the whole world, I would not give you a single footstep’s worth of the Holy Mountain. For me, this is my happiness. My prayer... “Here in the wilderness, here in exile, what happiness can you possibly feel? ” “A happiness you do not know,” I tell him. “If you knew the happiness I feel, then you would understand what I am telling you. We lived in the wilderness and had absolutely nothing.

We lived among the scrub oaks and the rocks. We had no running water and drank from cisterns. We had no bed; we had nothing. And yet we experienced the greatest happiness from God. Our hesychia, our inner stillness, was enough to bring blessed consolation to the soul. Once, a priest came to us from the world. Since we had nowhere to put him, I left my little cell and let him sleep there. When he awoke during the night, the poor man was terrified. “Where are they?

” he said. We were outside, praying with our prayer ropes. The poor man woke up and came outside, and when he saw how desolate the place was and the conditions we were living in, he nearly fainted. I said to him, “Do not be frightened; we are perfectly happy here. “Here we are,” I told him. When daylight came, he saw a boulder above my hut and said, “Father, aren’t you afraid that boulder might fall? ” I said to him, “But it won’t fall.

” “But what if it does? ” “It won’t fall,” I told him. “But why doesn’t it fall? ” “Because God is holding it. If God wills, He lets it go and it falls. If He does not will it, He does not let it go. It does not remain there by its own will; it remains because God is holding it. ” It sounded like a fairy tale to him. He must have thought, “This man is mad. ” And if you ever go to the Holy Mountain, you will see such things there.

If you could see the place called Karoulia, where in the past there were many Russian ascetics, you would see that their caves are like birds’ nests on the sheer cliffs. And people ask, “How can they live there? How do they get from one to another? All this is accomplished by the grace of God alone, and by nothing else. Who today could leave his parents, his youth, and all the many things people enjoy in the world, and go shut himself away on the Holy Mountain, amid hardship and toil,

renouncing his own will and his freedom, which is man’s kingdom, bowing his head in obedience, keeping vigil at night, fasting, and laboring throughout his whole life? Why does he do all this? For what purpose? For the sake of salvation. Because he wants to serve God, attain holiness, save his own soul, save his parents and relatives, and help save the world.

No one could accomplish this if it were not the will of God. It could only happen if it were God’s will and the grace of the Lord helped us. That is precisely why we believe absolutely and unwaveringly that it is not by our own strength—far from it—but solely by the grace of God that we stand as we do. And so, by the grace of God, the world does not concern us. We enclose ourselves within the monastery, inside our cell, and we feel supremely happy. No one can comprehend our happiness. What blessedness!

And when the grace of God visits us, when the Holy Spirit comes and descends upon us, a person is carried beyond himself. We see holy people keeping vigil alone at night in their cells—inside a dark cell, as though in a prison—and yet dwelling in a state of Paradise. They commune with God with such grace and blessing that their eyes become two fountains of tears. These are not tears of penthos, of mourning for sin. That comes first, and from it something else begins.

What is it? Tears of joy and of blessedness in God. The monk experiences blessedness and theoria, the divine vision of God. We see this in Saint Gregory Palamas, who lived as an ascetic in various places on the Holy Mountain. His whole being became Godlike; his entire countenance was filled with divine grace and shone, and everyone who approached him could see it. They understood that during the night this saint had communed with God.

And when such a holy monk speaks with God, do not imagine that he speaks only about himself. No. Because God is love, He gives His own love to that holy man, so that the saint may intercede before Him for the world. “Ask, and it will be given to you; knock, and it will be opened to you. Ask, and it will be given to you. ” God gives the holy man the power—that is, He gives him grace and deems him worthy to speak with boldness before Him.

The holy man speaks to God about the needs of the world, and God, moved by his supplication, sends His grace into the world. And we see people who had been indifferent to their salvation shaken by some momentous event; they change completely and return in repentance to the way of God.

We read in the life of Abba Barsanuphius that this holy man held converse with the Holy Trinity. That is, how can we put it? He spoke with the Holy Trinity almost as someone gives an interview on a radio station and speaks to the whole world. He spoke with God about the world’s problems, and God responded. He was a recluse and never left his cell, yet he did not feel suffocated inside it.

He did not need to go out for fresh air; he had no need of it. He had the breath of the Holy Spirit and sailed upon seas, upon oceans of blessedness in God. Monasticism—and the Holy Mountain in particular—has repeatedly stood forth and raised its voice. It confronted heretical men. You will have heard how, in the time of Bekkos, the Latin-minded Patriarch of Constantinople, he was elevated after the Synod

returned from the Council of Florence. When they returned to Constantinople, Saint Mark of Ephesus condemned the union made at Florence between the Latins and the Orthodox. Emperor John, the next-to-last emperor of Constantinople, appointed Bekkos as Patriarch, although he was a heretic and Latin-minded. Bekkos came with an army to the Holy Mountain, intending to subdue this beacon of Orthodoxy and monasticism.

He wanted the Holy Mountain to consent to the Union. If the Holy Mountain had done such a thing, Orthodoxy would have sunk and come to an end. But the Holy Mountain resisted and stood firm. And the Most Holy Theotokos, the Protectress of the Holy Mountain and of Orthodoxy, went before it. And when Bekkos, this arch-heretic, was advancing with an army and other clergy, to subject the monasteries, sketes, and caves to union with the Catholics. At that time,

an ascetic outside the Bulgarian Monastery of Zografou was chanting the Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God and saying to her, “Rejoice, O Bride unwedded. ” Then he heard a voice: “Rejoice to you as well, elder. ” She said to him, “Be aware that Bekkos, the Latin-minded Patriarch, is coming up with soldiers and others. “Go to the monastery and tell them to shut the gate and not receive him into the monastery, because he is a heretic. ” The ascetic ran and informed the abbot and the fathers.

They shut the gate and enclosed themselves in the tower. They, of course, came as a military force, broke down the door, and entered. But they could not breach the tower. From the top of the tower, the fathers rebuked the Latin-minded man and called him a traitor to Orthodoxy and the true faith. He and his army set fire to the tower and burned the fathers alive, and the fathers were revealed as hieromartyrs. Then they went up to Karyes, to the Protaton. The fathers resisted and confessed the faith.

They arrested many of them and slaughtered them outside the Protaton—even children, little ones who were on the Holy Mountain with their parents, who worked there. As proof of the truth of this tradition, just a few years ago a grave was opened outside the Protaton, right beside the wall, where a vigil lamp had been kept burning. The relics of a Saint from Vatopedi were found there. He had confessed the faith and was slaughtered by Bekkos. Relics of small children were also found, children who likewise confessed their faith in Orthodoxy. Very many were slaughtered on the Holy Mountain,

and the Holy Mountain was devastated; yet it remained an unconquered citadel and fortress. Whenever the Holy Mountain judges that it must come forward and confess the faith, it does so only after giving each matter serious consideration. The only failure that occurred at that time, under Bekkos, came when the Latin-minded Patriarch assailed the Great Lavra. It is our great monastery, and there he led three or four senior priests astray. The others, of course, confessed the faith and resisted him;

but he deceived these few and concelebrated with them. After they had served the Liturgy with him and later died, their bodies were exhumed and presented a dreadful, demon-possessed appearance. It was terrifying even to behold—a striking demonstration of what Catholicism truly means. The matter is not as simple as it is presented and commonly discussed. No, it is extremely serious. If we examine the issues one by one, you will see that, on the side of the Catholic Church in relation to our Orthodox Church,

nothing has remained sound. There was nothing they did not alter and poison with teachings opposed to Orthodoxy and its dogma. The culmination of the Catholic Church’s errors and proud rebellion, of course, is that they violated the most sacred Symbol of Faith established by the first two Ecumenical Councils. And all seven Ecumenical Councils confirmed that not even the smallest stroke was to be altered: let anyone who does so be anathema.

Whoever shifts even an accent from one syllable to another will be estranged, unforgiven, and condemned. They forbade not only changing words and their meaning, but even moving an accent. Yet the Catholics did precisely this, although they too had signed their agreement when Rome was still holy. When the Second Ecumenical Council accepted and affirmed the holiness and authenticity of the Symbol of Faith of the First Ecumenical Council, the Romans also signed it. But by doing this,

they repudiated their own signature and brought the anathema upon themselves. Here we have errors made into dogma. Then there are still more and more: the use of unleavened bread, Holy Communion, and countless other things. If we investigate, we will find nothing correct—not even in the blessing of water. Even though it is a simple service, we see the holiness of the Orthodox blessing of water and the defilement of the Catholic blessing of water. For this very reason, we Orthodox Christians must strive to preserve

our Orthodoxy with the greatest possible exactness. In this way, we can pass on to our children the value of Orthodoxy and teach them about heresy, so that they may be informed and protected from it. So that afterward they do not make mistakes. And, of course, we see these mistakes being made. But we bear responsibility. We must explain the matter to them very thoroughly. And, as you know,

we must certainly be careful about Holy Matrimony and so many other things as well. These things may, of course, take place outside the Holy Mountain by pastoral dispensation, but they have no standing whatsoever according to the Canons of the Church. And so the Holy Mountain, the citadel of Orthodoxy and monasticism, stands exactly as it received the faith from the Holy Fathers. They were the first founders of the Holy Mountain, the Mountain of the Holy Name. Nothing on the Holy Mountain has changed.

The only change is that we ourselves are wretched. Those Fathers sanctified the Holy Mountain through their lives, their holiness, and divine illumination. Sadly, instead of honoring it as I should, I, in my wretchedness, have done nothing. I grieve for myself because I have failed to live up to the holiness of the Holy Mountain and of our Holy Fathers. But God is able even from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. That is, even in our own day, when we do not possess the holiness of those Holy Fathers of ours, our spiritual forefathers,

They undertook great ascetic labors and received many gifts of the Holy Spirit—gifts that we do not possess because our ascetic life has grown weaker. Those who become monks on the Holy Mountain today are very few. But, as we have said, God is still able to act even now, just as He brought about the new flowering that we saw on the Holy Mountain a few years ago. and though we were grieved because we were declining, growing fewer both in number and through old age—

the heretics had noticed this because they came to visit us. They saw that the Holy Mountain was growing old and declining, that scarcely any young men were coming, and that most of the elders had passed away. So they said to themselves, ‘In a few years, the Holy Mountain will be finished. Then came the attack on the Orthodox Church, and they hoped for victory. But the Most Holy Theotokos thwarted them. Our Most Holy Theotokos, the blessed Mother of God, who is so deeply venerated by the monks,

did not allow this beacon and stronghold to be seized by the enemies of Orthodoxy. She brought about a new flourishing, and now we see youth, learning, and spirituality blossoming on the Holy Mountain, together with the young men’s longing for a higher spiritual life. They seek it, they long for it, and they strive to follow in the footsteps of the fathers.

We need your blessings and your prayers, so that we may live according to the spirit of the Athonite fathers of old, who were remarkable men. God counted us worthy to see such men ourselves. We read about the Saints and, in the Lives of the Saints, about ascetics and grace-filled people;

and even in our own time we see them working miracles, following the path of the fathers, struggling in ascesis, keeping vigil, and living the life of noetic prayer—the beauty of the monastic life. Without noetic prayer, it cannot be called monasticism. Pray for us monks, that God may give us a spirit of spiritual struggle. Pray again and again that our numbers may increase, and that the Holy Mountain may be filled more and more with monks,

for in this way the fortress of Orthodoxy is strengthened. But there is another aspect that I have not mentioned: women’s monasticism. Small monasteries are scattered throughout Greece. There is no place without an outpost of monasticism and Orthodoxy. It is a great blessing for any place to have a monastery. Even simply visiting a monastery brings spiritual benefit. Merely to behold these faces marked by purity and virginity changes a person inwardly.

And we see that, the deeper society sinks into the darkness of sin, the more souls arise who are seeking—souls who rebel against the devil and sin, who advance to the strongholds of monasticism and Orthodoxy, and who are ready to act when the time of spiritual struggle calls for it. For we all come from the world and from families; we are not beings outside human nature. We too have our passions and weaknesses, and we struggle against evil and against enslavement to the passions.

We have two selves. One is the old Adam, and the other is the new Adam. The one is the old man, with his passions and weaknesses; the other is the man formed by the grace of God. And the old man resists and rebels. He seeks to rule and prevail over the good man within us. That is why both our own struggle and your prayers are needed, to help us overcome the old Adam, so that the new Adam—the renewed and reborn man—may prevail.

Then we may attain and gain holiness, from which you too will draw strength and grace. When we monks are counted worthy to have boldness before God, our prayers will be heard, and the fruit will be that God sends the world forgiveness of sins and the illumination that leads people back to Him.

Just as we pray for you and you pray for us, so may our prayers and efforts come together and lead us both along the path of light, the path of piety, and the path of our Orthodoxy, which is the beauty of every Christian. For we are sinners, and we ask God’s forgiveness. But when it comes to Orthodoxy, we must stand whole, steadfast, and courageous, so that we may pass into the next world. Once, when the fathers wished to test Abba Agathon, a great ascetic—or rather, to learn from him—

they said to him, “Abba Agathon, are you the greedy man people speak of? ” “So they say. I am,” he replied. “But they also say that you are sexually immoral. ” “I am. ” “And they say that you are negligent and slothful. ” “I am. ” “But they have also said that you are a heretic. ” “No. I am not a heretic.

I am Orthodox. “Why did you accept the other accusations but deny this one? ” He answered, “It benefits my soul to accept the others, because they lead me to humility. But this accusation of heresy would lead me to lose God and my salvation. I will never do that. This is why I came here and became a monk. Thus the example of Abba Agathon is an unshakable testimony to the truth that, without Orthodoxy, no one enters Heaven.

Therefore, we will hold fast to it with all the strength of our souls, and we will yield in nothing. Do not despair and think that we have no fathers. We have bishops, priests, monks, and devout people who stand nobly and courageously at the ramparts of the Church and Orthodoxy. And so we will have guides and commanders in the battle when the time comes to defend Orthodoxy. …of Orthodoxy, when the time for confession of the faith calls for it.

For, as we have said before, even in the last days of the Antichrist—and right up to that time—saints will not cease to arise in the Orthodox Church. Does the Church not have saints whom she can present as ascetics? But will we, the people of today, be capable of that? The Saints of the last days will be those who confess the Orthodox Faith and, above all, faith in the divinity of Christ. That is where the battle will be fought: whether I, or anyone else, believes in Christ as the

God-Man—whether Christ was God or not. ‥ They have adopted every heresy and combined them into Chiliasm. These are the antichrists who already exist. Then the time will come when the principal Antichrist, the Antichrist in the fullest sense, will also come—by God’s dispensation and condescension—so that we may be tested. And as we have said before, although we lament our condition and fear that we are in danger of being condemned to Hell,

we may suddenly and unexpectedly find ourselves gladly becoming confessors of the Faith. Then, instead of going to Hell, as we thought we would, we may find ourselves crowned as martyrs in the glory of Heaven and receive a wondrous place in Paradise. Let us all pray that we may be counted worthy of this great grace: to make the holy confession of faith and pass into the ranks of the Church Triumphant in eternity. Save, O Lord, Your people, and bless Your inheritance,

granting victory to the emperors over the barbarians. Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
