Summary

Elder Ephraim urges the faithful to desire salvation above all earthly things and names the soul's three enemies: the devil, the flesh, and the world. At death the bodily eyes close and the soul's eyes open, revealing the deception of the present world; the soul's destiny is decided by whether it bears the traits of the Heavenly Father, above all genuine love, mercy, forgiveness, and purity, or the marks of the devil. He offers Saint Silouan's counsel, 'Keep your mind in hell and despair not,' as a path of immediate return to God after every sin, notes that God removes from the memory of the righteous their loved ones who are lost, and presents confession as burying sin and guilt as the grave dissolves the body. He closes urging humility, constant repentance, and never despairing of anyone before life's end.

Homily: The Desire and the Way of Salvation, given abroad.

Blessed are You, O Christ.

Behold, once again we are together. Christ unites the souls of men and fills them with His love. This bond will always remain firm and sound.

What ought to shake us and keep us serious and steadfast is to long, to long to be saved. Everything else, all that is human, earthly, and passing, is truly fleeting; it is all like a house of paper that falls at the slightest wind. In our prayer, let us beseech with

great zeal and fervor that God grant us grace and blessing to long to be saved. If we have no desire for salvation, we cannot press ourselves forward in the hard struggle of perfection in Christ. Of course, who can boast that he is perfected in Christ, that is, that he has conquered his passions and weaknesses and now rejoices in apatheia,

in freedom from the passions? No, we are all people poor in soul, and I most of all.

Let us ask our Most Holy Theotokos to grant us grace, so that at every moment—not merely every day, but at every moment—we may be watchful, attentive, and spiritually awake as we confront the great enemy we face. In particular, we have three enemies: the chief one is the Evil One, followed by the other two—our flesh, our own self, and the world.

We are fought by our own self, by the world, and by the devil. These are the three great enemies we are called to strike.

We must never, never forget the salvation of our soul. Why? Because, humanly speaking, when we close our bodily eyes, at once the eyes of the soul are opened. What we have not seen for so many years, we are able to see within a few brief moments. And then we shall see that the world mocked us. Then we shall see how the world managed to make us attend to it and neglect the other world.

We have two worlds, the present one and the eternal one. The one that is above in Heaven, spiritual, not bodily and material things. That world which, in a kind of vision, the great Paul of our Church said no human eye has seen, this world, this Paradise. No human ear has heard the melody of the angels, and the heart of man, likewise, has never tasted such sweetness of Paradise.

That is why he went on to say that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the coming glory that will be revealed to the children of God. And a child of God is the one who, at the hour of his soul's departure, bears the genuine traits of the Heavenly Father. The Heavenly Father, our God, is not seen in His nature; He is not touched, He is not grasped by the mind; but He is perceived with the heart.

When we love God, we see Him. We see Him too in His expressions; we see Him in the manifestations of His boundless heart. God is love, says the Apostle John the Theologian, the beloved disciple who leaned upon His breast. He said that God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

When we have love—not a guilty kind of love, not love mixed with self-interest, driven by selfish aims, or governed by the mind of the flesh; not love that seeks deeper material benefits or other forms of sin—and especially not the so-called love and “dialogue of love” that all the prominent churchmen boast about so much, saying, “We must have love, and then everything is all right. ” No. Such love toward those who

blaspheme the Orthodox Faith is not love. It is sin, error, and wickedness. Love that has no elements of salvation is not love, but a delusion of the devil. So then, God is love, and thus, when we have proper love toward our fellow man, toward our brother, toward our neighbor, we bear a trait of God. When we have compassion, another trait; when we forgive easily; when we hold no malice; when we help those who persecute us, those who hate us, those who accuse us and say a thousand and one untrue things about us, and inwardly our egotism is offended and reacts against it. And when our ego reacts, if we love these people and pray for them,

we do the will of God and acquire yet another characteristic of God. For Christ told us of His Heavenly Father that He sends rain upon the good and the evil, and makes the sun rise upon sinners and the righteous. Therefore, He withholds no good thing from anyone. God shows His goodness, even though we curse Him and trample Him underfoot, and especially, as we saw in that most blasphemous, most impious work that the whole world witnessed, which is being staged today, we see how our Christ is trampled underfoot by people,

by men of dust, by worthless people, and yet He endures and is long-suffering. And even that man, and those people who did this and by whom He is blasphemed and souls are cast down, when the hour comes for them to repent, God will receive them. The Heavenly Father will embrace them, will forgive them, will wash them, will clothe them with the garment of adoption as sons, and will make a celebration in heaven, among the angels. And He will show the magnificence of His greatness and of His boundless heart. So when we too act this way, when we behave like this toward those who do us harm,

we gain yet another of His traits; and likewise when we live in chastity, when we live purely, when we live with a purity of every kind, not only bodily purity but purity of soul and of heart and of nous, just as God is pure. So, when the soul departing from the body bears in its countenance these characteristics of the heavenly Father, the road and the way to Heaven open before it.

For it is a child of God; it cannot go anywhere else. A true child remains in the house of its Father, while a child who is not His own, an illegitimate child, has no place there, receives nothing, and has no right to any inheritance. For this very reason, when on the contrary the soul does not carry these traits but carries those of the devil — and what is the devil? He is a blasphemer, he has boundless malice, hostility, condemnation, slander, filth,

dishonorable passions — when a soul carries these as it comes out of the body, it will go where it belongs; it will go to what resembles it. So then, what we must have in our life in order to be saved is the desire for salvation: to long, to love, to be saved. We must not be indifferent or take this matter lightly. This is no matter for lukewarmness. For we do not know—not only whether we will live until tomorrow,

but even from one moment to the next. We see it happen in everyday life: a traffic accident, a collision, and a person’s life is over. He is killed, and his soul departs. The eyes close, the bodily eyes go dark, there is no light, the soul comes out of the body and departs. And at that hour, of course, it begins to repent, when it sees what is really happening here. 'I thought I would be annihilated, that there is nothing after death.' 'And now I see that here I stand before a serious

reality of eternal life' — which he will remember, because the baptized person, the Orthodox Christian, however much he forgets, however much he loses sight of God, however deeply he falls into sin, still, in the depths of his soul, of his heart, he has received the seed of Holy Baptism, the grace of Holy Baptism, the grace of adoption as a son. The grace of the Kingdom — even though, of course, the sins have buried him, the accumulation of sins and of guilt has crushed him, so that it gives no light and does not change the person. And so he thinks it is all finished, that there is nothing, and so on.

But as his life comes to an end, he sees that the things he had heard and took for fairy tales are in fact reality. And now what happens? Remorse begins — but this remorse no longer brings any benefit. It is here, in this life, that remorse benefits us, here that it renews the person, here that it gives him no rest at all. A newly revealed Saint of the Holy Mountain, Saint Silouan the Athonite, said: 'Bring your nous down into Hell, and you are saved.' But how am I saved by that?

Well, bring your nous down, go down low, go down there and see what is happening. See how people are tormented in Hell, how they are tortured; become yourself like one of them, and come to your senses. Come to your senses, weigh things properly, and see that this is nothing to play with. Our salvation is not a game, to be brushed aside with indifference and passed off however it happens to turn out. Besides the fact that the life we present is entirely different, this reveals how we understand and experience the reality of the life to come.

We must never let this thought slip from our minds; it should constantly press upon us inwardly. As we lie down to sleep, we should ask ourselves, “Will I wake up? ” Sleep is an image of death. A person falls asleep and does not know where he goes. Does a man know where he is? He passes so many hours asleep and then wakes. Where was he? He may even have been seeing things that do not exist, as in a dream. So, just as he lived through those hours in a kind of unconsciousness,

because his awareness was not working, and so on — in the same way, it may be that I will die. And what happens then? He wakes up in the morning. Will I make it back? Might I sin? Might some improper thought enter my mind? If I have some unresolved matter, I will put it right. If there is someone who is not speaking to me—or, you know, if there is something between us,

and I am not speaking to him, and we have grown cold toward one another— 'Should I not make peace? Why leave things this way? Scripture says that the sun must not set while we hold something against our brother. And so I must put it right.' We wretched ones — and I am the first of them. A thousand and one thoughts pass through us and assail our heart, They stir up feelings within us that are neither good nor right. Then come words that we do not control at all.

And time—we squander our time. Time is the money God has given us so that we may use it to gain eternal life. What have we done with that money? We will have to give an account, and I will be the first to do so. For we are teachers, and those who teach will be beaten with many stripes. and many of them, because we not only hear these things and teach them, but do not even practice them ourselves. For this very reason we must take the matter of our soul very seriously and watch over it constantly, constantly.

We have sinned in something, some sin has taken hold of us, some thought, some sinful feeling has assailed the heart — at once, turn, turn upward, turn the heart up toward God: 'I have sinned, forgive me, God, I have failed, I will not do it again, I will be watchful, ' and I keep it in my conscience so as to confess it in Holy Confession. This — that I ask forgiveness at once — disposes God to await the setting-in-order of the soul, so that the forgiveness of the sin may proceed in due course. This same Saint meant, once again,

that if you bring your nous down into Hades, you are saved. How much can be accomplished by this one thought! Repentance comes about. The person repents: 'I too am going down there.' And what is Hell? What does Scripture say? Scripture says that it is eternal. And what does eternal mean? It means it has no end; it never sets.

That is, eternal darkness, eternal deprivation of the grace of God, eternal deprivation of light, of the presence of the Angel, of man, and so on. And so on, yes. Eternal, he says. But this thought arises—it rises up before us. If we reflect on it deeply, we will see that our minds stop working. We cannot grasp it: eternal.

Of course, God is eternal. Eternal. And this is a fearful thing, but we have not truly understood it. That is why we are as we are. For if we had grasped eternity... We would do well to learn a little asceticism. We are not the foremost; I am not, even though I too am a monk.

And then, it is not only the terrible Hell and the deprivation of God; this is eternal death. This is what is called death in its very essence, as a rule, and in the true sense. Death is not the bodily death we endure, because bodily we simply settle our account with this life. Rather, the soul enters its true realm, to live forever; it now enters its own world. For here it is in a prison, and the prison is our body and the world. The soul does not belong here; the soul is the breath of God.

And as the breath of God, it is not meant to live here. It does not fit here, and that is why we carry a restlessness within us. Often we feel an emptiness; we feel empty, and we wonder, 'Why am I like this? Something is missing.' It is missing, it is missing, because the soul finds no rest in what we offer it here, and it longs to depart. For this very reason, the deprivation, the endurance, the condemnation of Hell is only one part of Hell. And there is yet another. The deprivation of Paradise, another hell alongside it.

When a father sees his child, the mother her daughter, the daughter her mother, the father missing. To find herself brought into Paradise and to say, 'Where is my mother, where is my father?' and they are not there. And the fathers ask what will happen then and there: tribulation will be present. 'Then I am the one who is saved, while my child is in Hell, my daughter is in Hell.' 'Am I then to live happily now?

Is that possible?' What do you say, can it be that I live happily here and now, while there there will be restlessness? No, the fathers shed light on this too, and they said that God will surpass His very self. It is no longer just, they say, that the righteous, my children who suffered in this life, struggling for themselves and for others, to help, to save, should here suffer still more. But this is a place of rest.

How can they be at rest if they are thinking that Hell exists, and that their own loved ones and others are there in Hell? They will not experience Hell, but Paradise and all that they will live in Paradise. That is why the Lord God will remove, He says, from the memory of the righteous, the memory of their own loved ones, so that it is taken away from their memory entirely that these people exist, so that they may be able to live in rest. This is the patristic Orthodox view. For by reason the matter seems such that one could never find rest.

Set a person amid gold-woven splendour, and when a beloved person of his is down in the dungeons, being beaten and all the rest, he will not be able to rest, no matter how comfortable the bed may be and all the rest. Unless, of course, there is no love. But if there is a beloved person, one cannot find rest. The bed cannot contain him, nor can the rest he receives. Therefore, when they are in the other world, where there will be no difficulty of thought, where there are no darkenings of the nous and of the heart,

but everything is always clear, and the thoughts and the faces and all things will shine within. Then they will think far more clearly of the people who will have been separated from these righteous ones, and therefore they will suffer terribly. The second father said that justice does not stand this way. Justice must be carried out. These people suffered during their lives; they were oppressed, they struggled, and they labored both for themselves and for others. The others were not benefited—that is, they refused to listen.

But now I must truly grant these righteous ones Paradise. And He will remove, He says, the memory of all the loved ones who will be absent from the all-radiant assembly, so that they may be able to enjoy the good things of God for ever. The things we have said are very, very little; they are nothing compared to the reality. We could speak for whole hours and days about the great truth that awaits us, but human vocabulary is far too poor to take in the truth and the reality.

Such is the gospel quality of it. That is why, as I said at the beginning of this discourse, let us make our appeal to God to give us the desire for salvation. Let us long for it, let us love it, let us struggle to be saved. When we have some pain, do we not run to the doctor? Because perhaps with some medicine, with some remedy from the doctor, I may no longer be in pain and no longer suffer. Well and good; that is entirely right. In the same way, we often suffer in soul from our sins, and especially from the reproach of conscience.

The reproach of conscience is another hell. Woe to the person who falls into the hell of conscience. It is a terrible thing. I once saw a man who had committed a fault that could not be put right, because it involved another person; and because he was a man of God, he felt such a great pang of conscience that he was like a wounded deer, running here, running there, and no place could contain him.

And I want to tell you, this is a fearful thing. The reproach of conscience is terrible. That is why we are able to uproot it, this reproach, by laying our sins down sincerely, with metanoia (repentance), with contrition, with self-reproach, at the feet of our spiritual father. We cast them down, and there we bury them within the grave, laying over them the slab of forgiveness and of oblivion; and there inside, everything dissolves. Just as the human body dissolves within the grave,

so too a person's sins and his guilt break apart when he buries them there, through the Mystery of Holy and Saving Confession. God has given us this great gift, an incalculable gift, a great mercy of God; for who could be saved without repentance? Even the Saints would go down below, because they were human beings, and somewhere they too fell short. No one is without sin except God, and so everyone stands in need of repentance. Even Saint Basil the Great said it; he said, 'A woman I have not known, yet a virgin I am not.' He meant that the logismoi (the intrusive thoughts) that so often besiege a person,

the young person, strip away even the pure, virginal air of the soul. This is what the Saint meant.

Let us pray for what we asked at the beginning: that God may give us longing, because if He gives us longing, we will run. Let us run so that we may obtain the prize of the upward call. “Take hold of eternal life,” the Apostle Paul says to Timothy. Hold fast, he says; grasp eternal life firmly in your hand and keep it, because it alone will bring you up on high. And let us keep our sins in remembrance, and examine our soul for the things we have done. And let us ask again that God would grant us the gift of repentance and of tears, so that we may shed tears of repentance that wash the garment of the soul,

which we have soiled, each according to the way he has fallen short. There are stains, there are many smudges; often it is torn, and the nakedness shows through. Yes, let us wash it, let us mend it, let us set it right. When? Now, while we still can. Tomorrow we do not know; and so, when we repent, God sees the repentance of the heart. He sees it, He hears it, He listens closely to it. Many times people commit sins, and perhaps they themselves say,

“There is no hope of salvation for me. I have done this and that, and so many other things. Repentance is impossible for me; I cannot draw near to God at all. And yet a day comes, an hour, a moment, when a person changes—truly changes. It is as though a favorable wind begins to blow. Circumstances change, different days come, and then you see that very person who only yesterday was boasting and saying, “There is no God,” or, “I want to enjoy everything. There is nothing after death. When we die, everything ends, just as it does for animals.

Hell and paradise are here in this life”—all the things you hear people say. And afterward, that same person, who may even have led others into sin, repents, comes to faith, confesses his sins, and is saved. We spiritual fathers, at least, have countless testimonies of this. And so it bears repeating: we must never despair of anyone in this life, nor praise anyone before the end. For as long as the ship has not yet reached the harbor, we should neither despair of anyone nor declare anyone blessed. But wait: you may set out well, yet how do you know what you will encounter on the open sea?

That is why we need watchfulness; we must be attentive in everything. If we walk rightly even for a little while, it is because God wills it and because God helps me. I am unworthy to walk rightly. So in this way we safeguard ourselves, so that we do not fall. And when we are not walking rightly, we should seek counsel, so that we may return to the right path. For there are guides who can lead a person rightly. What do doctors do? They treat the illness and also prescribe preventive medicine,

so that it will not return. The spiritual father does the same. He hears the person’s confession, sets things in order, assigns the appropriate penances, offers counsel, and in this way safeguards the person. A Holy Father, Abba Isaac the Syrian, says that God has no need of our prayers, prostrations, prayer ropes, fasting, or ascetic practices.

The Ascension, the Annunciation, the Kingdom of Heaven, the Nativity of the Theotokos, the Second Coming, Diadochos of Photike, the Annunciation, the prayer, and so on. The sick man did not take his medicine; he opened the door to the germs, and they come in, and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. That is why we must always be watchful,

always live in repentance, and always cry out, “Forgive me, ” because Abba Poemen says that when a person says, “I have sinned,” God says, “Your sin has ceased. ” See what a loving Father we have. When we say, “I have sinned,” He says, “Your sin has ceased. It is forgiven, My child. ” Yet we do not do this. And so he says, “This is why we are justly condemned. ” It is so easy for us to be forgiven, yet we do not seek forgiveness. We cannot bow our heads.

Our pride will not allow us to admit our fault. That is why He says, whoever humbles himself, he is the one who will pass through the narrow door, the low door of the Kingdom of God. Whoever holds his head raised high will strike his forehead against it and come to nothing. The one who bends low will pass through beautifully. That is why we must humble ourselves; and the humble person is also an easy person to deal with. May the Heavenly Father help us,

and send us this spirit of longing for salvation; may He fill our heart, our soul, our conscience within, may He set it ablaze, so that, like a furnace, it burns within us: how are we to be saved, how are we to be saved. Let us do everything to be saved, and with the help of this good God may we be counted worthy of this repentance, this correction, this cleansing; and may He also count us worthy to pass into His Kingdom and into Paradise, so that no Orthodox Christian may be missing from the great and eternal festival of the Kingdom of God.

Amen.

Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance. Grant victory to the emperors over the barbarians, and by Your Cross preserve Your commonwealth.

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us.
