Summary
Elder Ephraim treats blasphemy as a grave sin driven by a specific demon that leads baptized Christians to curse Christ, the Theotokos, and the Holy Cross; each blasphemy is a second crucifixion, though Christ's open arms on the Cross signify readiness to forgive the blasphemer who repents. It is a mad crime that strikes at Christ and the Panagia over grievances that have nothing to do with them, while the Theotokos kneels begging Christ for patience: an ascetic's vision showed Christ resolving to end the world until she won a reprieve, and St. Andrew the Fool learned that God endures for ages as a patient Father. A child died blaspheming the Panagia in his negligent father's arms, while a repentant robber's tears outweighed all his sins; believers are urged to comfort blaspheming husbands with love and pray for all, including enemies.

This homily on blasphemy was given abroad. Today we will speak about a very grave sin. We will examine it in depth, so that we may understand just how grave it is and what an immense burden of guilt it adds to the account of the person who commits this crime. This sin is accursed blasphemy, a spiritual intoxication. This is a sin we meet with constantly.
We see that people, and indeed Orthodox Christians, baptized into the name of the Holy Trinity, reach the point, the demonic condition, of hurling out shamelessly and without any fear of God terrible and hideous blasphemies against Christ, against the Most Holy Theotokos, against the Holy Cross, and so on.
There is a special demon of blasphemy, but people do not realize that this evil spirit draws near and lures them into becoming blasphemers, into crucifying our Christ all over again, the One who for our salvation became man, took on flesh, and endured all that He
endured as His Holy Passion, in order to lead us into His Kingdom. And we wretched human beings, who have been shown mercy so richly, end up obeying the blasphemy of the demon, blaspheming and wounding and crucifying again the very One who showed such boundless divine love toward us.
If we gaze upon the Crucified Lord, we shall see Him with His arms outstretched, a crown of thorns upon His head, His face utterly ravaged by suffering and torture, His side pierced by the spear, His body bruised from the scourging,
and His feet and hands nailed fast—all this for our salvation. And before this Crucifixion comes man—made of earth, formed from dust, the very one for whom Christ was crucified—and he lashes out at Him; or rather, he crucifies Him a second time and grieves that heart
which sacrificed itself so greatly for the whole world.
His outstretched arms mean nothing other than this: He is waiting even for the one who blasphemes Him, so that He may forgive him. “I do not desire the death of the sinner, but that he should turn back and live. I do not desire death, says God, the death of the soul, the separation of the soul from Myself, says God. Rather, I am waiting for when he will turn back, and for this reason I grant him life, even with all the crimes he commits.
Our Christ is waiting for every sinner, and this is the very reason He was crucified. The fact that a sinful person is still alive and has not yet been judged by God is a pledge from God. This very gift of life is a pledge of salvation. And at every moment God waits for that person to come to his senses, to return to himself and say, “I have sinned, ” to fall into the embrace of the Crucified One and receive from Him abundant forgiveness.
Blasphemy is a crime, it is a mad crime, because a criminal commits his crime perhaps because someone slandered him, Perhaps someone slandered him, caused him harm, or did something evil to him; and in the heat of the moment, with his blood boiling, he loses control and goes so far as to commit a crime. There is at least some logic to it, some measure of justification,
because something was done to him and he responded by committing the crime. But what possible logic can there be in a blasphemer? When someone wrongs him, whether it is his wife, or his child, or his work, or something, some worthless little thing, then very cheaply, very easily he pours out this poison and begins to pierce again that side which was already pierced, the side that brought forth for us Baptism and His Holy Blood. This crime is madness,
for at the very moment when Christ is not to blame, nor the Most Holy Theotokos, at the moment when something else is at fault, this man sets his tongue in motion and poisons that heart which sacrificed itself for the whole world.
The earth groans from the blasphemies of Christians, the very air has been polluted against the name of Christ and of the Most Holy Theotokos. And the reason Christ still waits for us and has not judged the world is that our Most Holy Theotokos kneels and pleads and begs and asks for an extension of time. Be long-suffering, she cries out to our Christ, so that perhaps people may repent. And we see this All-Holy One, who intercedes,
and through whom we still stand in life, while people with no intellect, no reason, no conscience, spit out words and drag her down so low with the most hideous and filthy words. We, of course, ought to pray for all people, and especially for the blasphemers, that this accursed sin may cease, for the wrath of God is piling up. And one day it will break out,
and we do not know exactly what the punishment will be. And when God makes His decision, no one will be able to hold it back. A holy man, an ascetic, was granted a vision and saw our Christ upon a throne of glory. The whole scene was filled with Angels ranged in their orders.
At Christ's right hand stood our Most Holy Theotokos. Next to her stood the honorable Forerunner, John the Baptist, and after him the Archangels and the rest. And Christ held, or rather, the Archangel brought to Him the books of the ages, and Christ would open each book and look upon the sins of each age, everything that the people of that time had done.
And when He came to the sixth and the seventh century, opening the corresponding book, He saw so many sins that His face began to darken and He began to consider passing judgment. And when the book of the eighth century was handed to Him, the moment He opened it and turned through the first few pages, He closed the book, and He said:
for this age is dreadful. Great wickedness, great sin, a great stench rises up from below toward My throne; I will bring the world to its end. Everything showed that He would decide it with a single nod. This holy man saw that the Archangels stood ready at once to carry out the command and to put the decision into action. The moment our Lady the Theotokos saw that her Son and God was ready to decide, and that these dreadful things and events of
the Second Coming were about to take place, she stepped forward timidly, knelt down before Him, and began to plead with Him. My Son and my God, be longsuffering a while longer. Do not pass judgment. Send Your illumination. Send Your mercy. Overlook the sins of mankind. Send guides. Send spiritual people to illumine the world.
Do not pass judgment; have pity on mankind. And at once Christ was moved by the pleadings of His most pure Mother, and for the moment He decreed, with a nod of His head, longsuffering. And the vision came to an end. We all believe that this takes place in the heavens; we believe that our Most Holy Theotokos stands at the right hand of our Christ and continually intercedes for the whole world. That is why we still stand, and have not been judged, and have not been punished.
If a person breaks the law of the state, we see the police arrest him at once, they bring him before the court, and he is punished accordingly. We sin continually, more or less, and no sentence is handed down. Christ does not arrest us, He does not lead us to death. And this is because He is our Father; He bears with us, He waits for us, He is longsuffering, and His longsuffering has no limits. Saint Andrew, the Fool for Christ, once asked God to show him a little
of how great His longsuffering is, and for a moment God opened the eyes of his soul, and in a mysterious way, in the blink of an eye, he saw the sins of mankind that people commit within mere moments. The moment he saw people sinning so greatly within mere moments of time, he shuddered and said: what is happening here, why does God not pass judgment,
so much sin, so much wickedness, and so on. And he heard the voice, which said to him: for two minutes you looked upon such wickedness, and you lost your patient endurance and asked me to bring judgment. Ages have passed and ages will pass, and I patiently endure, because I am a Father and I forgive. But when the hour comes that will be the enacting of Divine Justice, then I will judge mankind.
While we still have time, let us press ourselves. Let us ask forgiveness, and let us help these people who blaspheme and re-crucify the Lord. And let the wives also take a little more care with their husbands who blaspheme, when they come home from work somewhat tired,
burdened, worn down by many things. The wife should not at once lay before him the problems, the finances, the matters of the children and so many other things, or anything else at all; for since he already has the habit of blasphemy, it does not take much of a cause to set that poisonous tongue moving again. But with love and with tenderness and with experience she should treat him, so that he always knows that when he comes home he will find warmth, he will find love, he will find tenderness. And in this way you can hold back the blasphemy, at least for a time,
and also keep him at home, so that he has no wish to go off elsewhere. Of course, someone who is accustomed to blaspheming needs little provocation. But we too should be careful not to give him any cause—or rather, any occasion—for the blasphemy to increase. As far as we can, let us try to lessen it. And the wife should pray very much, at great length, very fervently, that God may grant good sense and a curbing of this evil. There was a small child who had grown used to blaspheming the Most Holy Theotokos.
Of course, since he heard his father blaspheming, he too began to do the same. The father did not scold him, did not rebuke him, and so it continued; and so that God might show what harm he had done to his child by not restraining him, one day the child, seeing the demon of blasphemy coming toward him, began once again to blaspheme, and as he tried to hide himself in his father's arms, there he breathed his last.
And so the father reaped the fruit of what he had brought forth: that is, that his child should die with blasphemy upon his lips, in his very arms. In his arms—and so learn the lesson that he must not set a bad example regarding this sin, or so many others. Parents must restrain, discipline, and correct their children when they are young and do wrong, so that they may learn what sin is and what they must avoid. Of course, whenever we sin and transgress Christ’s commandments, we are sinning in this respect as well.
I am a great sinner. As we have said before, blasphemy is against the Holy Spirit, and so is every heresy.
When a person blasphemes against the dogmas of the Orthodox Church, this too is blasphemy. And indeed it is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which is not forgiven.
Let us pray, and let us beseech God and the Panagia to enlighten people. Let this wrath of God cease, for it is the wrath of God. We all know that when we hear a blasphemy, a cold sweat takes hold of us and we shudder. For if we, who are not being blasphemed but only hear the blasphemy, feel this terrible feeling, then we can understand and sense how Christ hears the blasphemy of His own name, and how our Most Holy Theotokos likewise
hears her own name being trampled underfoot. A person commits so terrible a crime. And all those who blaspheme tell me that they do not even want to blaspheme. If a father’s own child were to curse him—though the father had given the child no cause at all, but the child cursed his father in the heat of play—what would that father do? A father who loves that child so deeply and makes so many sacrifices for him,
only to hear the child curse him in the heat of play? This, at the very moment when he had done nothing to trouble the child at all. By natural reasoning the father would rebuke the child, strike it, and so on. And he himself is a man with so many sins of his own, and yet he takes such great offense at a little child whose mind is not even working at the moment it blasphemes him. What, then, would God have to do to the blaspheming person, when that man hurls terrible blasphemies against Him? Tomorrow this person will die, he will depart from this life, he will be led to the judgment seat.
And who will be his judge? It will be the very One whom this man reviled. He will look Him straight in the eye; but how will he look at Him, how will he look upon Christ when he has crucified Him so many times in his life? Will he even be able to reach the judgment seat? He will beg for the help of the Most Holy Theotokos. But he did not spare even her from his blaspheming tongue. The Most Holy Theotokos will say to him, 'Yes, my child, I will help you. But what wrong did I ever do you, that you blasphemed me? Did you ever once see me do you any harm?
Did I ever embitter you in your life?' 'For all those years I was interceding for you, and yet you came to the point of taking me under your feet and trampling upon me.'
A certain man of this kind came and confessed this sin. He had also gone to another spiritual father, who told him, of course, that it is a great sin; but he just kept on doing it again and again. He came to me, he said, and told me, 'I know, Father, and all the rest of it, that it is evil.' I said, wait, my child, and hear a couple of words from me as well, and let me lay it all out for you, fully and plainly, how great this crime is. And his answer was, 'Father, the way you put the matter to me, the way you presented it, I took it in so deeply.'
'I have understood my crime, and I make the firm and irrevocable decision. Never again; and not merely not to blaspheme, but I will praise and glorify this divine name.'
The longsuffering of God has no limits. Man stands in awe before the boundlessness of God's longsuffering and of His divine Mercy. Picture in your mind a sinful man who has committed every crime to the greatest degree, to the fullest extent of sin.
When this man has grown old in all these sins, let us suppose a thousand years of life, a thousand years of crimes, and then for a single moment he repents, through the longsuffering of God he repents, he seeks confession, he sheds a few tears, and at once he receives forgiveness. All his crimes are blotted out, wiped away, brought to an end, and this man becomes righteous.
You see the worth of God's patience. There was once a robber who had done a great deal of evil. He had killed, he had violated, he had stolen, and so much more. And one day the pursuit party wounds him, and they bring him to the hospital as a wounded man. His wound was terrible and deep. In the ward where he was being cared for there was also a holy man, a monk, alongside the robber.
One night he felt that he would not live, that his end was drawing near. Divine illumination comes to him, a ray of light and of repentance comes. Perhaps it was also the prayer of the monk, that good man who was beside him. And now, alone there in the night, he begins to repent. He lifted his eyes on high, he looked to God, he asked for forgiveness. He took upon his lips the words of the grateful thief and said, "Remember me, O Lord, in Your Kingdom.
I have failed, I have committed crimes, I have sinned, I have done so many evils. I have sinned; forgive me, O Lord." And his eyes began to stream with tears. He wiped them away with his handkerchief and placed it under his pillow. Then the robber’s life came to an end. The eyes of that monk’s soul were opened, and he saw the demons arrive with all their ledgers, in which every one of the
robber’s crimes was written down. Over all those years, they had filled scroll after scroll. There were also two angels present. The demons began to celebrate, sure that they were about to seize the soul from the bed. The angels, our elder brothers, having such love for every single soul, were seeking to see what they too could set against the demons and place in the balance, now that the robber's sins were about to be weighed. They were at a loss over what
they could possibly find in a robber, but soon they perceive his repentance, and searching, they found the tear-soaked handkerchief. At once they bring out the scales, and the demons, in a triumphant manner, begin to pile onto one side of the balance all the scrolls of his sins. The angels, trusting in God's compassion, placed there the little soaked handkerchief; they had nothing else. The moment they laid the handkerchief on the other side of the scales,
it weighed down like lead and flung all the scrolls off beneath the balance. The demons began to protest against the whole thing as an injustice, but the angels said that even the shedding of tears is equal to the washing of Baptism. The robber had been baptized by his own tears, and they took up his soul and led it into the Kingdom of God.
Behold the patience of God. This is why He does not bring death, whether bodily or of the soul, upon the blasphemer, nor upon every sinner in general; for every mortal sin is also an offense against the corresponding commandment of Christ. And therefore it is not only a cancer that brings death; death is brought also by the heart, and the kidneys, and the pancreas, and so many other illnesses which, when they strike the vital members of a person, bring on death. So it is here too: blasphemy is a cancer,
a disfiguring cancer, but we have so many other cancers as well. This is why we must continually repent, and pray to God both for ourselves and for the people who sin and are far from God. They are all our brothers. If we have love, it is here that it will show. Not to pray only for our own people, but also for our enemies. This is the commandment of God, that we love our enemies.
If we love those who love us, He says, that is nothing great; even sinners and relatives do that. But to love one's enemy means that one loves him solely for the love of Christ. Although the other person is his enemy, he is commanded to love him. And when he loves him for the love of Christ, the result will be that the love of God is given to him as a gift and as an honor for fulfilling this commandment. This robber, as we mentioned earlier, received in his final moments a ray of light and repentance.
He had no works to his name; he had done no good thing for which God might reward him in the end. It was the prayers of holy people that took hold, and God sent down His illumination. This is why, when we pray, we should believe that somewhere our prayers will take hold. They will show mercy to someone, they will illumine someone, they will bring someone back. They will not go to waste, so long as they are made with longing and with love. The monks of the Holy Mountain,
and in general wherever there are Orthodox monks, pray for the whole world, both in the services in the churches and in their own private prayers. Their prayers are heard, because they have withdrawn from the world, dedicated themselves to God, and their prayers therefore have a special boldness before Him.
Let us pray that our monastic life may grow in numbers, but even more in spirituality. For when monasticism... The more spiritual a monk becomes, and the more successful in the monastic life, the more his prayers will have boldness before God. And that boldness, as its fruit and result, will be that they help the world. If these people do not pray, who will pray so purely for the world? We see that in the world we have so many things, so many difficulties,
so many sins; it is full of the microbes of sin. And we take them in through all our channels, both of soul and of body, and we fall sick in soul and in body. Where can a person's eyes look and not see the microbe of sin brazenly trying to attack the health of the soul of the Orthodox Christian? And so, in order to fight off these microbes, there have to be microbes of health. And these healthy microbes are multiplied and scattered throughout the world by the prayers of consecrated souls.
And again I repeat: let us kneel and pray for all people. For all people are creatures of God, and we have a debt to them. That debt begins with the fact that we received illumination, we were illumined, we were born Orthodox Christians, we came to know the Gospel of Christ and the laws of the Church; it is a brotherly debt.
And so I am under obligation, and if we do not pay this debt through our prayer, we will have yet another sin that we are bound to confess.
Each one of us, by the offering of his prayer, helps the world, just as we help a poor man. A little from one, a little from another, and we lift him out of his poverty and bring him to a better lot. In the same way the prayers of mercy will help those who are poor in soul. And the time will come when a blasphemer will turn back and repent. We see sinful people, people who have blasphemed, coming to confess their sins. Who brings these people back?
The grace of God brings them. And this grace of God, who set it in motion, who drew it out and brought it forth from God so that it came down and illumined this person? The prayers of holy people. For this reason let us all pray that people may come to repentance, find salvation, and be spared eternal Hell. Hell is a terrible thing. As we have said another time, it is not merely in the conscience, but in the reality of the spiritual existence of the human soul.
of the human person.
