Summary
The third talk treats regular attendance and the preparation that precedes entry into the temple. Churchgoing is a standing obligation rather than a matter of convenience, and Canon 80 of the Quinisext Council deposes clergy and excommunicates laity who are absent three consecutive Sundays without grave necessity. Dimitrios Panagopoulos reads Saint John Chrysostom's saying that the one who enters declares himself worthy: Christ examines the garment of the soul, not the clothing. Worshippers come with vessels of differing size and cleanliness, and some with no vessel at all. Remembrance of wrongs annuls candle, prosphoron, kollyva, and prayer alike, for the Gospel commands that the gift be left at the altar until one is reconciled (Matthew 5:23-24); to say the Lord's Prayer while withholding forgiveness is to lie before God.
