Summary
Reading Luke 1:5-25, Dimitrios Panagopoulos treats the annunciation to Zechariah as the first announcement in the evangelical history, preparing the Annunciation to the Theotokos and the advent of Christ. Malachi 3:1 and Isaiah 40:3 had already foretold the messenger who would prepare Israel for the Lord. Though Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous, age and barrenness made Gabriel’s promise appear impossible; the priest’s doubt brought muteness, whereas Mary’s later question concerned a virgin birth without scriptural precedent. Elizabeth’s conception removed her reproach in God’s appointed time. John thus appears not merely as the answer to parental prayer but as a gift to the world, filled with the Spirit and honored by Christ. Prayer is heard, Panagopoulos concludes, yet answered according to providence and the soul’s true benefit.

Our subject this evening will be the event we commemorate today.
Today our Holy Church has kept the forefeast of the conception of the honorable Forerunner.
It is something that always has a great deal to teach us morally, and it carries real doctrinal importance as well. And I think this event should not be allowed to pass by unnoticed.
The Apostle and Evangelist Luke describes it, in a certain sense, as a first annunciation, because he then goes on to recount the second Annunciation. The first annunciation concerns the honorable Forerunner, while the second Annunciation concerns the Most Holy Theotokos and our Lord Jesus Christ.
The honorable Forerunner is a person with a history foretold in advance. Even before he came into the world, we know that there were prophecies concerning him. The Prophet Malachi and the Prophet Isaiah spoke of him; and when Christ our Lord came into the world, He referred to these prophecies and confirmed that they spoke of the honorable Forerunner.
Others whose coming was prophesied, and whom we therefore knew about before they came, are our Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, the Holy Spirit, and the honorable Cross.
The Apostle and Evangelist Luke recounts the birth of John the Forerunner, his conception, and the whole history surrounding him. He begins with the Forerunner because the Forerunner was the one who proclaimed the coming of the Lord.
So that our Christ could come down to the earth, he sent John the Forerunner on ahead of him. And so that we could go up to heaven, he himself went ahead as our forerunner, the one who runs before us and opens the way. In all, there are three forerunners, one for each of the three great events:
Christ’s coming into the world, our own journey to Heaven, and Christ’s coming at the Second Coming.
Before the Lord Jesus Christ came, John the Forerunner came first. Before His Second Coming, Elijah will be one of the forerunners. And before we can return to Paradise, our Lord Jesus Christ has gone before us as our Forerunner, as the Apostle Paul says in the final verse of the sixth chapter of Hebrews.
Beginning with the fifth verse of the first chapter of Luke, the Apostle and Evangelist Luke recounts the events in a historical manner. It was customary, we might say a standard practice, to mention prominent historical figures in order to indicate when these events took place.
He says: “There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.” Herod was an Idumean and the first foreigner to reign as king over Israel—that is, over the Jews. In his days the scepter departed from Judah, as Genesis 49:10 had foretold.
Then he tells us about Zacharias: what he was, what he was called, who his wife was, what her name was, and where they both came from — family, name, occupation, and lineage, his and his wife's alike. Of her descent he says she was "of the daughters of Aaron," and her name was "Elizabeth," and he belonged to the priestly division "of Abia." I don't know whether you have ever read up on these details — what "division" means, what "Abia" means, and so on. Of course, those of you who have studied will have come across them. Let me take the opportunity to tell you that David had divided the descendants of Eleazar and of Ithamar into twenty-four orders, which are also called ephemeries, that is, daily courses — even though they were not daily at all; each term of service lasted eight days.
A duty period. A person who serves a four-hour shift is said to be on duty. We speak of a duty shift in a hospital, or at the T.A.V.E. Although their period of service lasted eight days, it is nevertheless referred to here as a duty period. You may also find this in the Book of Chronicles, or Paralipomena, if you have an edition of the Septuagint: in chapter 22, verses 17–19, and in Second Chronicles.
So, these twenty-four that I'm telling you about — how David had divided the priests into twenty-four courses, that is, twenty-four rotations of service — you'll find that mentioned in First Chronicles, chapter 24.
The historian describes in detail how they served in the Temple of God. David appointed one priestly family to minister to God for eight days, from one Sabbath to the next. In other words, as we would say today, the shifts changed every Sabbath.
And for each priestly division it had been laid down exactly who the men were who would serve in the Temple of God. The division of Abijah was the eighth one. That is why it is specified so precisely here that Zacharias belonged to the division of Abijah, not to the twenty-fourth and not to the twenty-third, just as it is recorded in First Chronicles, chapter 24, verse 10.
— and ten. So then, the watch of Zacharias, his course of service, as we were calling it, which was the eighth course, the course of Abijah — that is the setting for the things he goes on to mention further in. He speaks about his wife as well. His wife was "of the daughters of Aaron"; that is, she came from the line of the high priests and priests descended from Aaron.
The ancestry of the Forerunner’s parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, is therefore made clear. They descended from Aaron, the first high priest, and from the tribe of Levi. Holy Scripture thus shows that the Forerunner had an honored lineage. He was not an insignificant person without roots; as people commonly say, he had both roots and a family tree.
So he comes and tells us the name of the one and the name of the other, what his work was, where they came from, and the rest of their natural endowments; but then he wants to give us the acquired ones as well, and he says: «They were both righteous before God.»
And here is an interesting point, one that many times we haven't noticed.
Many people are righteous only before other people, not before God. The world regards us as good and righteous. We would not step on a mosquito, yet we kill our own children within us. And we commit other injustices as well.
It is good for a person to be righteous before others, but it means nothing unless he also becomes righteous before God. An ancient commentator says: “Many are considered righteous by common opinion, but not before God; they are righteous only in outward appearance and before other people.”
Here, however, Scripture says that they were righteous before God. These people were not merely regarded as righteous by others. It was not only the world that called them righteous; God also called them righteous. It is a difficult thing for a person to attain God’s approval and be judged righteous by Him.
If Scripture itself calls you righteous, that means you really are righteous. And so we need to keep this in mind: the world, a human being, sees only what shows on the outside, but Christ sees the heart. So we should be afraid when other people call us righteous, when others call us good, when they applaud us, when they praise us, when they say fine things about us — whether behind our backs, so that we hear about it later, or openly to our face.
We should be very much afraid. Unfortunately, although we are not righteous, we still want others to greet us and honor us as righteous. Yet there is a great difference between being righteous before God and merely appearing righteous before other people. It is a terrible thing to accept congratulations for a virtue one does not possess; but even if one does possess it, one still should not accept congratulations.
A person should not accept praise, but should systematically avoid it, because otherwise he is in danger of falling through an attack from the right—that is, through apparent virtue.
See how clearly the distinction is made here, and what joy there is for the person who is truly righteous before God: “And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. But they had no child.” So they too had, as we would say, a painful circumstance in their lives.
Of course, they were not responsible for having no child, because Elizabeth was barren. They were not avoiding the bearing of children. They were not refusing to become fellow workers with God, nor were they refusing to offer human beings for the Kingdom of Heaven. In short, they were not blaspheming or repudiating the covenant they had made and the confession they had given on the day of their Holy Matrimony.
For many among us act irresponsibly, even some who are highly educated. They have planned beforehand, agreed beforehand, and decided in advance what they will do—whether they will bring human beings into existence or not.
They have taken the words «Be fruitful and multiply» and turned them into something else, and then they grow complacent and sleep soundly, telling themselves that everything is fine — because with certain logical, human lines of reasoning they quiet their conscience, which is crying out inside them and saying: «No, what you are doing is not right».
You know the consequences for humanity today and how humanity has changed. Children are systematically killed by the millions, while at the same time people struggle to produce children in test tubes. They avoid natural birth and prefer to present us with artificial methods of bringing children into the world.
You can see how shameful these things are in the sight of God, and how much God sees and how much He puts up with from the wretchedness of these mockeries. So people have no child — but they are not the ones responsible for that.
The Apocalypse says that when God shuts, no one can open, and when God opens, no one can shut. Yet we are indifferent; we fail to see what is happening today, because Satan has deceived us.
We have replaced the children whom we ought to have brought into existence with refrigerators, electrical appliances, furniture, cars, and the like. This is what has happened. We claim that we cannot have children, even though we possess enough goods to provide for ten or twenty children.
...and with one’s very being. A person feels this. Indeed, the Old Testament regarded someone who had no offspring, who had brought no human being into the world, as in some sense accursed. This was also what compelled Joachim and Anna, the Ancestors of God, to leave the Church, separate from one another, and depart—Anna to the mountain, and Joachim to his home. Thank you.
Thus, by our own choice, we bring this curse upon married life. You see people who could feed an entire village, yet because the wife does not want to spoil her figure, or does not want to stay awake at night, and so forth, the marriage becomes barren—a waterless cloud, as Jude says in his epistle, something fruitless and useless, like a barren tree.
Around such people a condition will develop that has filled, and will continue to fill, psychiatric hospitals and neurological clinics. Those who go against nature will suffer the consequences. They will pay for it.
For nature itself—and medicine and popular wisdom say the same—teaches that a woman who gives birth is herself renewed. Yet we, unfortunately, go directly against what God has established. These people, however, throughout the period when the woman was still naturally capable of bearing children, did not cease praying to God to release her from barrenness.
We also know of miraculous cases involving children. There are people who had no child for many years, but after they prayed, their barrenness was ended. In my own case, after seventeen years of childlessness, Saint Nektarios of Aegina gave us a child, whom we named Nektarios, as most of you know.
He is already six years old. Many people, then, have received this blessing, and others have received it directly from Saint Nektarios of Aegina in very specific ways. Some have received it through Saint Anna, the mother of our Most Holy Theotokos, and others through Saint Symeon, the patron saint of the Holy Monastery of Hilandar.
And people have received from other women saints as well. He has loosed their barrenness, He has opened the womb, He gave them His blessing. Here he makes the point that those who have no child are not at fault, because she was barren and the two of them were elderly.
And they were both advanced in years; they had grown old.
“And it came to pass, while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his division.” Here we see another distinction: each of those who served as priests in the Temple had a particular duty to perform.
One would offer the incense, which was the highest ministry; another would carry and offer the loaves; another would prepare the incense and the censer for the offering. There were various ministries. Here Zechariah is shown performing, in a certain sense, the most honorable one.
It was the most distinguished duty. So, when it was the turn of his division—his appointed shift of service before God—according to the custom of the priesthood, the lot fell to him to enter the Temple of the Lord and offer incense. Meanwhile, the whole multitude of the people stood outside praying. Whenever the priest offered incense in the sanctuary, the people prayed outside. This is what we mean when we ask that our prayer rise like incense before the Lord. Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
Now, the fact that the text says "on the right" — that is a favourable position. And that this was a good angel, as we would put it, is clear from the fact that he was not standing on the left side of the altar of incense. This angel is none other than Gabriel, Gabriel the Angel. After Malachi, who lived about four hundred years before Christ, there had been no other prophecy, no other word of comfort or consolation from God. From time to time God would send angels and speak through them, as He spoke to Abraham. So now, here too, He sends an angel — only this time the angel is not speaking about Abraham going out from his kindred and so on. Here he speaks and announces beforehand that things have now come to their fulfilment: the One who is sent, the Apostolos, will come; the Messiah will come.
The redemption of the human race was at hand. Nothing could be more joyful. Clearly, then, this was the Archangel Gabriel. Naturally, when Zechariah saw him, fear fell upon him. The angel immediately said, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard.” My coming is not without purpose, nor have I been sent without purpose. There is a reason why I have come and disturbed you: your prayer has been heard.
Which prayer? The angel doesn't say. He leaves us to understand that it was a prayer Zacharias had made much earlier, about his childlessness and his longing for a child. “Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son” — your wife, Elizabeth, is going to have a baby boy — “and you shall call his name John, and there shall be joy and gladness for you” — you will rejoice, and your heart will leap for joy.
The angel continues without allowing him to speak: “And many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great before the Lord. He shall drink neither wine nor strong drink.” In other words, he would be a kind of monastic figure, one of those known as Nazirites.
"And he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb." Of course, if we put this together with the going up of the Most Holy Theotokos into the hill country, when she visited Elizabeth, and with John, six months old inside the womb, who leapt for joy, then we will be able to understand it: that this child was filled with the Holy Spirit in his mother's womb, and greeted the Lord and the Most Holy Theotokos through his spirit.
…his own — so that he will be full of the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb. "And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God." Wasn't that exactly what he preached? "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." And he really did turn a great many people around, and he prepared many of them for Christ, who came after him. "And he shall go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah." Here the text draws a parallel between the Prophet Elijah and John the Forerunner. When it says "in the spirit and power of Elijah," it does not mean any kind of reincarnation, any transmigration of souls. It means he will take up Elijah's spirit; his spirit will be like Elijah's.
Just as Elijah was forceful, unbending, and all the rest of it, so this man will be too. That is what I mean. “To turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just.” In general his ministry, in one way or another, will bring people to terms with one another, will reconcile them, and will make them into real human beings.
«to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.» When Christ comes, He will find a people already made ready; and in fact most of the disciples came out of that first circle which John had gathered earlier. That is where the angel stopped. Now Zechariah takes up the word.
Zechariah naturally considered the facts before him. The barrenness of his wife immediately came to mind. This was a serious obstacle to the natural conception of a human being. When a woman has passed beyond her childbearing years, she cannot naturally conceive a child.
Starting from this, Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this?” It is as though he were saying: I have something definite before me, something showing that what you are telling me cannot take place. Something more will have to happen.
So if you really are the one sent from God, what do you have to say to me, what are you going to do for me? Give me something convincing, one thing that will let me believe it. And I will tell you why I am so hard to convince: “For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in her days.” So this here is a natural obstacle.
“My wife is advanced in years, and I myself am an old man.” Many say that Zacharias was no more than fifty years old. He was not very old, the way his wife Elizabeth was. They draw this conclusion from the fact that among the Jews, priests were forbidden to go on serving as priests from the age of fifty and beyond.
Since he was still actively serving, he could not have been more than fifty years old. Do not imagine a frail little old man, and then begin entertaining improper thoughts—you who are listening now, or who may hear this talk later.
You might say, “He was an old man, and now such things are being spoken of”—you understand. The angel replied: “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God.” Gabriel is interpreted as “God and man.” The fitting angel was sent to serve the mystery of the divine economy of the Incarnation, in which God would become man. For in all the events surrounding the person of the Theotokos, the person of John the Forerunner, the Resurrection, and the rest, Gabriel appears.
It is Gabriel who appears. He is the one who ministered to our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos, within the Holy of Holies for all the years she remained there. He is the one who brings the messages to Joseph, to flee into Egypt or to return from there. He is the one who gives the answer, "Why do you seek the living among the dead?" He is the one whose name is interpreted "God and man" — Gabriel. And so he says: "I am the one who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news." This good news, this joyful message, which you had been waiting for in the natural years of your life — and you never received it, and now it comes somewhat late.
Nevertheless, would it not bring you joy if this came to pass? And it certainly would come to pass, since God was at work in it. Precisely because God was at work, you should not have questioned it. Yet the elder Zechariah answered with arguments based on human reason and the limitations of nature.
That is precisely why you will be punished. For since you were a priest, you should have known that no word from the Lord will be impossible. You should have remembered other cases from the past: Sarah was barren, Rachel was barren, Hannah was barren, and many others as well.
Why, then, do you question this? And so you are punished: “Behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day when all these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their appointed time.”
The angel expected him not to doubt. Yet at the second Annunciation, the Annunciation to the Theotokos, he did not expect the same of her, even though she too asked, “How shall this be, since I know not a man?” Since our Most Holy Theotokos continued speaking, the angel explained it to her and helped her come to the words, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord.” He did not do the same with Zechariah; he punished him at once.
It is true that our All-Holy Lady, the Theotokos, had no precedent she could read about. Barren women had given birth before, childlessness had been undone before, but no virgin had ever given birth. So she had every reason to wonder and to say, “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?” And that is why she was not punished.
The result is this: "And the people were waiting for Zacharias." During this conversation inside the Temple, Zacharias took up more time than the people knew he ought to spend in there.
How long does it take to offer incense? Then he should come out. The people were waiting outside, waiting for Zechariah, and they marveled that he was taking so long in the Temple. They wondered why he was delayed, what had happened, and why he had not come out.
When he came out, he could not speak to them. He had immediately become mute, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the Temple, that something had happened to him inside and he had lost his speech. He began making signs to them, trying through gestures to explain what had happened, and he remained mute. And when the days of his service were completed—that is, when his appointed term of service had ended—he returned to his home.
Then — we didn't get that far in today's reading — "Elizabeth his wife conceived, and she hid herself for five months." It was something Elizabeth simply couldn't take in, something she couldn't go around telling people about. And she felt ashamed in front of others, too.
She may have felt the child within her, as people say, and yet still wondered whether she was truly pregnant and what would happen. She thought, “Should I go out and make a fool of myself, saying that I am pregnant, only for it to prove untrue in the end?” After five months, when the child’s movements had made the pregnancy unmistakable, she no longer concealed her womb.
Clearly, as the account shows us, she was a serious and sensible woman. She weighed everything carefully and made certain of it all, lest for a moment she should be mistaken and the pregnancy not be real. That is precisely why, it says, she kept herself hidden for five months, saying, “Thus the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.”
She regarded it as a disgrace to go about without a child. God arranged for this to happen when He judged the time to be right. Here I could say a few words about the gift God gave. He gave this child as a gift to those people and, more broadly, to the whole world, at the time He Himself willed. Now was the time God willed it. Was this somehow arbitrary?
They had wanted it earlier, when it seemed naturally possible, yet He granted it only now. But no, this was not arbitrary; it had been wisely planned and was a blessing. He did not grant the child when they asked, because if He had granted their request then, He would simply have given them a child. But now He gave them the child. That is the mystery.
He gave them no ordinary child, but the child. Do you remember what is written in the eleventh chapter of Matthew? Have you noticed it? “Among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist.” No woman, it says, has borne anyone greater than John the Forerunner.
Have you noticed this? That is precisely why our Church honored him so greatly. When the Church composed the apolytikion of the Saint, she borrowed a few words from the tenth chapter of Proverbs: “The memory of the righteous is celebrated with praises.” But then she rests upon the testimony of the Lord.
«But for you, O Forerunner, the testimony of the Lord is enough.» Even though the memory of the righteous man is rightly hymned with words of praise, still, for you, praises are not enough. And what the Lord said is enough all on its own: «But for you, O Forerunner, the testimony of the Lord is enough» — that you are the greatest man ever born of a woman.
Whatever we might say about you could never reach the height of what Christ said. If, then, God had given this couple a child when they were asking, He would simply have given them a child. But now He gave them the child. Do you see what He did? Imagine their worldly sorrow, and the bitterness and venom directed against them by some of those around them.
When the elderly Elizabeth’s monthly courses ceased, every hope of bearing a child departed with them. As long as they continued, some small hope remained: perhaps next month, perhaps the month after that, perhaps the next.
But when they ceased, that hope also ceased. Imagine such bitterness. Yet did Elizabeth become indignant with God because He had not given her a child? And still, at the time He Himself judged best, God sent the angel to Zechariah and told him that his prayer had been heard.
Which prayer? A prayer I offered ten, twenty, thirty, or forty years ago? Yes, that very prayer. It had been registered, as it were, and today the order was given for that request to be acted upon. Whatever a person presents to God is received and recorded.
But it is acted upon not according to the will of man, but according to the will of God. And the will of God means the true spiritual benefit of the person.
When we speak in this way of the will of God, we mean what is truly for the good of the human person; that is why God wills it. It could not be otherwise, for the will of God cannot be contrary to what benefits the human soul and body.
But do we have the patient endurance to send Him our request and then wait for whatever He decides? We do not. In our prayers we give orders to God. We tell Him, “Do this for us. Save this sick person. Cure this cancer patient. Show mercy here,” even if the time has not yet come; “Grant health there,” even though that person has suffered from birth.
We give orders to God, but God is not our servant. And when He finally granted Zechariah’s request, was Zechariah harmed because he became the father of the greatest of the prophets? No, he was not harmed. From this example, then, people must learn to wait.
“Cast your care upon Him,” and wait. Wait. Hand the matter over to Him—the whole file containing your case—and wait. He will act; He cares for you. Yet on the one hand we give Him our requests, while on the other we continue carrying those same requests upon our own shoulders.
So we wear ourselves out and often reach the point of unbelief. If you are giving someone a small parcel, it can be wrapped and handed over at once. But if you are giving something large, it takes time. We must therefore learn patient endurance, because God’s clock does not run according to ours.
God’s clock seems to run very slowly. We ask for something today, and He may give it to us ten years later. The cases in which the miracle happens immediately are exceedingly rare: “My Most Holy Theotokos!”—and at once the person sees the miracle.
A child falls from a height of ten metres and lands on his feet, unharmed. That can be nothing other than God. But these are exceptional cases. Most of the time, answers are not given immediately; they come much later. This is discussed in the book Pray Without Ceasing. Many incidents are recounted there, showing how God works. It is enough simply to tell you that God waited 5,508 years before sending His Son. This is God’s patient endurance: He sees the whole condition of the world and waits for it to become ready.
He waited so that, when He sent Him, His mission would bear fruit. People do not consider how God measures time. Instead, possessed by the illusion that this temporary life is everything, we demand that God stand over us constantly and immediately give us whatever we ask of Him.
The human person—and especially the baptised Christian—is eternal. Even the atheist is eternal, but his is a dark eternity. The Orthodox Christian, baptised in the Orthodox manner, enters from the day of Baptism into a radiant eternity.
Whether a person dies or remains amid the conditions of this world, eternity is always before him—but he does not want to know it. That is precisely why he gives orders to God. That is why he wanders about in confusion, suffers, is tormented, and is shaken.
He treats temporary things as though they were eternal, while neglecting the things that truly are eternal. Eternal things lie beyond all these passing things. If we put them in their proper order, our lives would be very different. We say, “Our Father, who art in Heaven,” yet we go about like orphans. You have a Father in Heaven, and still you live this way. Are you not ashamed?
If you truly understood the words “Our Father,” you would no longer blaspheme God or go about so despairing and afraid. What is this world, after all? It is nothing. Yet we cannot understand that. But have you asked Him to help you understand it? You have not. Does He not want to show you what it is? You have not asked, and so you do not receive. How could it happen otherwise? It cannot. In any case, the Evangelist now concludes this account and begins another: the Annunciation. But this second annunciation takes place in the sixth month.
It is the sixth month after the first annunciation. That is why the Evangelist counts the time: “In the sixth month, Gabriel was sent” to Mary. The second Annunciation takes place, and the Most Holy Theotokos hears that her kinswoman Elizabeth is in her sixth month. She goes with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah. There the revelation occurs: Elizabeth’s infant leaps within her womb, and, filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth speaks prophetically about the fruit of the Lady Theotokos. Then the Lady Theotokos composes that sublime hymn, saying, “My soul magnifies the Lord.”
Our Panagia stays with her for three months, and with that the count is already complete: six and three make nine. That is why our account picks up the events again further down, from verse 57: «Now the time was fulfilled for Elizabeth to give birth.»
And after the nine months, “she gave birth to a son,” just as the angel had said. “Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had magnified His mercy toward her.” Everyone was waiting to see what this elderly woman would finally bring forth.
Indeed, the matter had become a subject of discussion even farther afield. Communication was primitive in those days, and people in the surrounding region wanted to hear the news and see what this elderly woman would bring into the world in her old age.
So they had agreed that, when the priest’s wife gave birth, a fire would be lit. The others would see it and run to find out what child she had brought into the world. This is the origin of the fire that our own people later continued to light.
It was a fire that was lit back then, to announce that John had come. It is not for entertainment, and not so we get burned and end up needing first aid. That was the purpose that bonfire had at the time — that fire which was kindled back then.
Among us today, however, the custom has degenerated into damage and excess. At that time the people received the news, came, saw the child, rejoiced, congratulated the family, and did all the customary things.
And something else: the child was born. On the eighth day, they came for the child’s circumcision. There was a commandment that every male child should be circumcised at eight days old. This, of course, also has its place in the present-day order of our Church. Today there is no circumcision, but there is a prayer on the eighth day. Before Baptism, the prayer for the naming of the child is given. If you look in the Euchologion used by priests, you will see that after the prayers for the mother following childbirth...
The child was not taken to the Church by the priest immediately after leaving his mother. On the eighth day, the godfather or godmother would go to the Church, since the mother was still considered ritually unclean, and the child would be given his name.
And then, once the forty days have passed—provided the child is healthy and there is no emergency requiring an earlier Baptism—the Baptism will take place after the fortieth day.
In the past, if the Baptism took place within the first forty days, the mother would not attend her child’s Baptism because she was considered unclean. Yet this custom has persisted even today: many times, although a child comes to the Church with his mother to be baptized at two, three, five, or eight years of age, the mother still waits outside, out of sight. Now, this would apply to you if you had your child baptized before the fortieth day, while you were still considered unclean. But otherwise, why should a mother remain outside instead of entering the Church to pray at her own child’s Baptism? There is no such rule. So now, here in this region…
Circumcision has been replaced by the naming of the child, which takes place on the eighth day. In those days, then, the child was named and circumcised on the eighth day. Circumcision means that the foreskin at the end of the male organ was cut off.
They cut away that excess skin and discarded it. The descendants of Ishmael and the Jews still do this today.
They wanted to name the child after his father, Zechariah. The relatives were standing there, and they intended to call him Zechariah. But his mother intervened and said, “No; he shall be called John.” It was a strange name, one that had never appeared in the family. Normally, of course, people want to give a child a family name.
The tradition remains of naming a child after a grandfather, a grandmother, or someone who distinguished himself in some exceptional time. So they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” There is no one in your family with that name. What kind of name is this? Where did you find it?
"And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called." The old man is standing there, poor thing, unable to speak a word, watching it all, and they signal to him: "You — what name do you want written down?" But he cannot speak. So he made a sign to them: "Give me a piece of paper, a writing tablet, so I can write it out for you."
Since he could not tell them aloud, he wrote: “His name is John.” Not, “He shall be called John,” but, “His name is John.”
It is not for us to give him a name. The child already has a name; the angel gave it to him. He had said beforehand, earlier on, what his name would be — do you follow? "His name is John." This is no business of yours, and none of ours either. We are not the ones called to decide. God, who gave the child, has given his name as well.
So he says, “His name is John,” and they all marveled. “Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God.” Just as the angel had said, he would remain mute until all these things had taken place. And so it happened: Elizabeth conceived, the child was born, he was given his name, and the whole matter of his coming was completed. Then Zechariah’s muteness—his punishment, as we said—was brought to an end, and he blessed God.
So the people living round about there were filled with fear: "And fear came on all that dwelt round about them. And all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea, and all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying: What manner of child shall this be?" That is, "What, then, is this child going to become?" And they said this after everything that had taken place: the way he came, the way he was born, and now the way he was circumcised.
“And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying.” He said a beautiful prayer, a prayer of thanksgiving and prophecy, which is set down next, from verse 68 onward. So, the moment his tongue was loosed, the father said: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and brought redemption to His people.”
In other words, in the face of the child he is now seeing Christ, the One who redeems the people. It is not the infant he is looking at. His father is prophesying now, he too by the Holy Spirit, and he says: "And he has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from ages past." All the prophecies that the holy Prophets uttered are now taking on flesh and bones.
“Salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; to show mercy promised to our fathers and to remember His holy covenant, the oath which He swore to our father Abraham: to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve Him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.” All this, he says, God is fulfilling today. Then his prophecy turns to John. He looks at the child and says: “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people in the forgiveness of their sins, through the tender mercy of our God.”
The people will learn from you that salvation comes through the tender compassion and mercy of God.
...of God, he will be saved through metanoia, through repentance. And this preaching, which does not begin with John but with Zechariah, was later repeated by John. Zechariah prophesied it, John repeated it, and it continues in the preaching of Christ. This, after all, is what the Apostle Paul said, as we heard a few days ago, when he came here to Kinara.
And — you may not have noticed this — from this point on, what he is asking for is repentance. Repentance is a great subject. And it is needed first of all by us, who fall every single day. Every fall calls for a repentance to go with it; every fall calls for a resurrection, a rising up again.
Unfortunately, we fall in many things, but rise again in very few. We confess little, acknowledge little, and repent little. This, then, is the prophecy. In brief, this is the event as it is presented to us here. Afterward, the child grew.
His life was spent in the wilderness because of the persecution, as you know. In fact, a few days ago a student raised this question with me, but she did not remain long enough for me to answer her.
Christ fled from persecution into Egypt, while the elderly Elizabeth, also being persecuted, fled with her child into the wilderness. This is related by Tradition, since it is not written in the Gospel, but is found in the Tradition we have received.
The aged Elizabeth snatched up her baby as well and fled, taking the child with her. She came to a mountain, and there she could go no further — they were about to catch her. And then, in a short prayer, she cried out: “Receive, O mountain, a mother and her child.”
In a miraculous way, the elderly woman found herself on the far side of the mountain, and the danger to John’s life was averted. When the aged Elizabeth died, the child was left alone and had to be cared for until he was able to sustain himself. He lived on wild honey and locusts until he was about thirty years old. Then God commanded him to go forth, preach, baptize, and carry out the rest of his ministry, until he was counted worthy even to baptize Christ. His hand remains incorrupt even today at the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou on the Holy Mountain.
The Honorable Forerunner is a forerunner not only for people here on earth, but in Hades as well. As the hymn says, "He preached the good news to those in Hades also: God made manifest in the flesh." It is true that the wickedness of Herod cut off the head of the Honorable Forerunner — and so the Forerunner went down into Hades, and there he preached.
The Forerunner here on earth, and the forerunner in Hades. He went before Christ even into Hades and preached to the spirits held there. The greatest of men met an inglorious end: he was beheaded, and his head was displayed on a platter.
How? Why did this happen? Because he dared to speak the truth, to remind a so-called married couple who were living unlawfully that what they were doing was not right, that God does not bless it. "You have your brother's wife." Obviously this is no mere rebuke; it is an extremely grave one. "It is not permitted for you to have your brother's wife." As long as her husband is alive, you cannot make his wife your own wife. So she is an adulteress, and you are an adulterer.
If her husband—his brother—had died without leaving offspring, then under the divine Law he would have had the right to take her as his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. But while the brother was still alive, he could not have her. Yet this woman was so enslaved to the flesh and to sin that she would not end that unlawful union, but continued in it. Corrupted as she was—for Satan casts corruption into the human heart—she became like a beast.
She preferred to add murder to her adultery rather than end that unlawful union. One evening, during a celebration held by her lover—not her husband—there was a great banquet. Her young daughter danced well, and the king, deeply impressed, swore an oath to her. But the girl, prompted by her mother, asked her uncle, as we might call him—if not her father—to give her on a platter the head of John the Forerunner.
So Herodias thought that she would shut that mouth which kept rebuking her sin — just think of it. And he, a man who worshipped the flesh and worshipped his own belly, sent an executioner one night to the prison at Machaerus, where that precious head and that venerable face were being held under guard, and he cut off the precious head of the Forerunner and brought it, as we are told, on a platter. And that corrupted girl had the nerve to take it into her own hands; no one can even say it without their heart breaking. But when the devil gets into the heart — and especially through the flesh — a person sees nothing at all; they become the worst of wild beasts. Not children, not husband, not wife: nothing stands in front of them. This is what happened. It is also said that this precious head…
Even though it had been severed and placed upon the platter, it continued to say, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” That night, she is said to have raged against it and even to have spat upon it. In the end, this Herodias herself also met an inglorious death.
They were in Spain, so the story goes — this unlawful couple, and with them the younger Herodias, Salome. Somewhere along the way, as the girl was walking by herself, the ice opened up, she fell in, and it closed again. The ice froze solid around her neck and cut her head off like a sword.
That was the end of this woman’s lust. As she had sown, so she also reaped. Her punishment was itself in keeping with the natural consequences of her deeds.
Thank you.
Each day has its own particular character, not only Saturday and Sunday. Today, however, we have paused for this historical account concerning the person of the Forerunner. In conclusion, then, I would like to remind you that when a person lives according to God, God makes use of him.
God places His seal upon that person—not merely for this present age, but for eternity. Joy to parents who are blameless and righteous, and joy to children who fear God, who are the fruit of prayer and promise, and who have been blessed from their mother’s womb.
And the child will indeed be blessed when the mother herself is blessed. I pray, therefore, that this Forerunner, together with his family, may have mercy upon us and bless us. Amen.

Το θεωρούσε ντροπή να κυκλοφορεί και να μην έχει παιδί. Έφτιαξε, οικονόμησε ο Θεός να το κάνει, όταν αυτός ενόμιζε. Εδώ θα μπορούσα να πω δυο λόγια αναφορικώς με αυτό το δώρο που έδωσε ο Θεός. Ο Θεός το έδωσε αυτό το παιδί σαν ένα δώρο στους ανθρώπους αυτούς και γενικότερα στην Οικουμένη, όταν αυτός ήθελε. Τώρα, το ήθελε αυτό ο Θεός. Πως είναι έτσι αντάρτικο δηλαδή;
