Summary
Nikolaos Sotiropoulos argues against pride in knowledge, intellect, and office, grounding the mind itself and its illumination in God’s gift, with John 1:9 as a central text. He places Theognosia and Anthropognosia above secular learning, citing Socrates’ confession of ignorance and Paul’s statement that present knowledge is partial and mirror-like until the Second Coming. Scientific description, he argues, cannot answer ultimate questions about time, matter, or nothingness. The lecture also treats titles and offices as temporary before death, and presents humility as the path to true knowledge, angelic cognition in eternity, and a place in the Father’s house.

We continue, brothers and fathers, with the homily on the theme: man, why do you take pride? Many take pride in their knowledge. You take pride, O man, because you studied at universities at home and abroad; you take pride because you know many languages; you take pride because you collected a whole bundle of diplomas;
you take pride because you are an eminent scholar and man of letters and scientist and philosopher; you take pride because you wrote learned books and treatises; you take pride because you made scientific discoveries; you take pride because your name is celebrated in East and West,
written and heard across every length and breadth of the earth as the great name of a man of letters and of the sciences. Man usually takes pride in his knowledge. But I ask you, proud man, poet, man of letters, scientist, philosopher: where did you find the conditions for acquiring all this knowledge? For a man to acquire knowledge,
he needs to have a nous, a spiritual intellect. There are three or four million species of animals on the earth, and not one of them has a nous, and not one of them can study, acquire knowledge, become wise and a scientist; not a single species of animals. Because it has no nous. You, O man, studied and acquired knowledge because you have a nous.
But where does the nous come from? Did you yourself create your nous? Or did you receive it from another? No one can create a nous. We all received the nous from the One who is the supreme intellect and supreme wisdom; and since you received from another the nous by which you acquire your knowledge, why do you take pride? But we have not received only the nous;
we also receive the illumination to acquire knowledge. The true Light, as we will hear at the great feast of Pascha, enlightens every man coming into the world, This saying is very deep, and it is true through and through. If the true Light did not enlighten the minds of men, no one would be able to acquire any knowledge. No mind could function.
But since, O man, you received your nous from another, and another enlightens you so that you may acquire knowledge, why do you take pride? Then I ask you, proud man: what kind of knowledge do you possess? Do you possess worldly knowledge? Worldly knowledge is not the most important thing. There is other knowledge that is more important, incomparably more important. What is this other knowledge?
It is Theognosia, the knowledge of God, and Anthropognosia, the knowledge of man. I ask you, proud man with your whole bundle of diplomas: have you come to know the most important thing of all, God? Through natural revelation, through the grandeur of the universe, through the infinite purposes that exist within the universe, have you arrived at the knowledge of God? Do you accept and confess that God exists, more concretely still?
Have you arrived at the knowledge of the true God, the Christian God, the only true God, in whose name signs are worked? If you have not arrived at Theognosia, all your other knowledge is nothing. And have you, O man, also arrived at Anthropognosia, self-knowledge? You know things outside yourself, but do you know your own self? Do you know who you are?
Have you come to know it? Have you reflected on it? Have you searched it out? Have you proven who you are? What idea do you have of yourself? Are you a sack of dust? Or are you spirit? Where did you come from? Where are you now? Where are you headed?
What is your destiny? If you, O man, do not have Anthropognosia, knowledge of yourself, then even if you know all the other things of the world, you are nothing, you are worth nothing. The great significance of Socrates, that eminent philosopher of our ancient homeland, is that he turned philosophy from the outer world toward the inner world, toward man.
O man, it is possible for you to possess much worldly knowledge, and it is possible for you to possess much religious knowledge as well. But why do you take pride? All the knowledge you possess is a single drop compared to the ocean of all that you do not know. The things we know are few, very few, in relation to the things we do not know.
Man, why do you take pride? Why do you think you know so much? I will put a few questions to you. Can you answer what time is? No one can answer what time is; it is a most thorny problem of philosophy. Man, can you answer the question, what is space? To this question too, man cannot give an answer.
Man, can you tell us what absolute nothingness is? Philosophy says astonishing things. Let us remove from the world, the physical world, everything that exists in it: the earth, the sun, the moon, all the stars. Let us remove the cosmic dust, the radiations, everything that exists within the universe. What will remain after the removal of all material things, my brothers?
An emptiness, you will tell me, a nothing, a zero. Philosophy says that this emptiness, this nothing, this zero, did not exist but was created; and this is one thing, while the absolute nothingness that existed before this emptiness was created is another thing entirely. Can you, O man, grasp this concept? Impossible. Man, tell me how the plant draws the water, the sap, up to its heights, contrary to the law of gravity
that pulls everything downward. Man, tell me how the plant takes water from the earth, how it selects the various elements it needs. And how does this plant make a beautiful bunch of grapes, that plant a beautiful orange, the other plant a beautiful apple? Science describes the phenomena; it cannot explain them. Man, tell me, can you know how the sheep eats the grass and turns it into milk, how you drink the milk and turn it into blood?
Science observes, describes, but does not explain the phenomenon. Man, you who boast that you know much, man who go to the extreme of thinking that you know everything, tell me: how do you think? I grow dizzy, someone said, when I think about how I think. It is a fact that I think, but how I think, I cannot understand.
I think automatically; it simply happens, and then I am thinking. I cannot understand how I think. Tell me, if you know, what are thoughts? Do they have a material existence? Do they have weight? Do they have color? There is nothing material about them. But are they non-existent things? They are not non-existent things. What are intelligent thoughts,
and how do they differ from foolish thoughts? Tell me, O man, what is your fellow man thinking at this very moment, if you know? Tell me, you who say that you have mastered history, that you know all the persons of the past, that you know all the historical events; tell me, you who say that you have mastered cosmology, that you know all the cosmological events and phenomena of the past; tell me, do you know what will happen in the future? Or do you know who will be prime
minister in Greece thirty years from now? Tell me, man, what is happening on a star in the universe that is millions or billions of light years away from us? Tell me, man, what in the final analysis matter is. Give me a model of matter. Tell me, matter is like this thing here. Tell me, what in the final analysis is light? What is electricity? I think I once told you a joke from student life.
A professor, to tease a student during the exams, put this question to him: "Tell me, my child, what is electricity?" "Professor," said the student, "I knew it. Look, I was saying it outside to my fellow students." "The moment I walked into the examination hall, I got stage fright and forgot it." "Alas," said the professor, "one person managed to learn what electricity is, and he has forgotten it."
What did the ancient philosopher of our homeland say, the one who remains the foremost of all philosophers, Socrates? He said something great, and he said something true, a measure of humility: "One thing I know, that I know nothing." Is this saying not an exaggeration? At first glance it seems exaggerated. Did Socrates know nothing? Does man know nothing?
Yes, my brethren, in the final analysis we know nothing about any of the material, natural things. We do not know, I repeat, anything in the final analysis: what matter is, what energy is. These are unknown things, and they will remain unknown. The question of what matter is in the final analysis, what energy is, what the forces of attraction are,
these questions slip over into the metaphysical world. When we ask such questions, we are no longer doing physics; we are doing metaphysics. Paul, the greatest Apostle and the greatest man after the God-Man, had worldly knowledge and wisdom, and he also had divine knowledge and wisdom. He was divinely inspired, he was filled with grace, flooded with the gifts of God.
And yet how does Paul express himself about his knowledge, about his knowledge of God, and about his divine inspiration? "I know in part; but when that which is perfect is come, then shall I know fully, even as also I was fully known." "I know in part; now I see through a glass, by means of a mirror, darkly." I have, he says, only partial knowledge of things. When that which is perfect comes, the Second Coming,
then I shall attain perfect knowledge. For now I see through a glass darkly; I see faintly, dimly. Thus speaks the greatest Apostle. Now I have, he says, the knowledge of an infant; I am an infant. O proud man, you are an infant and yet you take pride, when a Paul, who had divine inspiration, who knew present and past and future, who did not study three years beside
Christ but only three days in Damascus, whose bodily eyes were closed while the eyes of his soul were opened, and who came to know mysteries that the other Apostles were taught over three years, expresses himself so humbly about his knowledge. And you, man, express yourself with pride. Remember from the Old Testament how the Wisdom of Solomon expresses itself. We can scarcely conjecture
about the things on earth, and only with difficulty discover what lies close at hand. We can barely, and with great effort, form a few weak conclusions about earthly things. Even the things that are near us, right in our hands, we discover only with much labor. But who has ever been able to fathom,
to search out, the things that are in heaven? There is not, my brethren, only this world, the material, the natural one. There is another world, incomparably higher, from which this world came. "Thou, Lord," cries the Psalmist, and the Apostle in today's epistle reading, "Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of thy hands." You, Lord, Son and Word of God the Father:
at the beginning of time, for time did not always exist, an incomprehensible mystery, time was created together with the world; when there is a world, there is time. You, Lord, at the beginning of time created the earth, and the works of your hands are the heavens, the stars, the galaxies, the stars beyond all counting, that are within the boundless expanse. We have some knowledge of the natural world; but of the supernatural world,
what do we know, what are we able to know? We cannot understand what time means. The philosophers rack their brains; they cannot digest the concept of time; they philosophize endlessly and never solve the problem of time. How then are we to grasp the concept of eternity, which means the absence of time? How are we to understand what existed before creation, since there was no time? And how do we even say "before creation," since the word "before" implies time? We cannot express it any other way.
And about eternity too we express ourselves using the concept of time. We say that eternity is a time that never ends. But that is not what eternity is. Eternity is a concept opposite to time. We cannot understand what matter means; how then are we to understand what spirit means, which is a concept opposite to that of matter? We express ourselves apophatically, as they say in philosophy and theology. We do not say what spirit is; we say what spirit is not.
Spirit is not matter, we say. But what is spirit? We do not say what eternity is; we express ourselves apophatically and say that eternity is not time. But what is it? We are fashioned to think in terms of time, and we cannot think at all without the concept of time, and so we cannot understand at all what eternity is. Remember the Author of our faith,
in His famous dialogue with Nicodemus, the teacher of Israel. “Are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not know these things? ” Christ said to Nicodemus. “You are the teacher of Israel, and you do not know these things? If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? And no one has ascended into heaven except He who came down from heaven,
the Son of Man, who is in heaven. If I have told you about earthly things and you neither understand nor believe them, what will happen if I tell you about heavenly things? How will you understand them? No one has ascended into heaven to learn the heavenly things and then pass them on to you, to tell you about them. One has ascended into heaven, the one who came down from heaven
and is at the same time in heaven. Christ brought the full Revelation, in the sense necessary for our salvation. And now I put a question to all these learned men, the poets, the men of letters, the university professors, the academics, the scientists, the wise, the great authors. I ask a question: do you take pride, my dear man, in your knowledge and in your wisdom?
Then I ask you: do you know Holy Scripture? Holy Scripture is not an ordinary book; it is the supreme book. It contains thousands of prophecies, improbable, astounding, which have been fulfilled and are still being fulfilled. Holy Scripture contains concepts unthinkable, unimaginable, so paradoxical that they prove of themselves its divine inspiration. Holy Scripture is a book through faith in which saints and wonderworkers are formed, and they work wonders both in this life and after death. The Ascension. The one who believes in spirit,
who believes in God, who confesses, who communes, who does works of kindness, who lives the spiritual life, who will not be a slave to his passions, that is what they ought to mean by a spiritual man. But they call even the most corrupt man a spiritual man, so long as he writes poems and literary books about sexual matters, nonsense, scribbling pages for me.
"A spiritual man," they say, "a man of the spirit, " one who does not believe in spirit and does not live a spiritual life. I have had discussions with such spiritual men. They do not know a single passage from Holy Scripture. Once they brought out an edition of the books of a certain literary author, and the other men of letters who produced the edition were commenting on the work of this literary author. They found the passage; they found within the work of this literary author the words,
"Thou shalt tread upon the asp and the basilisk, and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon." And they threw up their hands: this saying, they said, we do not know where the author got it from. And these are the spiritual men. Great names, university professors, academics. Do you know Holy Scripture? You do not. You know nothing—nothing at all. I often have discussions with heretics.
Every heretic, even the most illiterate and uneducated, has the notion that he knows a great deal: “I have the Holy Spirit. He illumines us, and so we know Holy Scripture. ” I say, “What an opportunity! Since I have found people who have the Holy Spirit, who resolves every difficulty, perhaps you can tell me what the Apostle means when he says in the Epistle to the Galatians, ‘Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. ’ This passage has more than four hundred interpretations. So here is my opportunity: you have the Holy Spirit,
and He whispers every meaning into your ear. Tell me, I say, so that I too may learn. Open the Apocalypse, chapter nineteen, verse ten. The Apostle John fell down to worship the angel of the Apocalypse, who was showing him and explaining to him the various mysteries. But the angel would not accept the worship. 'See thou do it not,' he said. Be careful, do not worship me. I am thy fellow servant.
Worship God. And what does he go on to say? 'For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.' Go ahead and explain that. Do not worship me, the angel says to the Apostle John. I am a servant of God, just as you are, and your brethren the prophets. Worship God, for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. What meaning comes out of this? The interpreters have racked their brains over it, and they have never given an explanation that satisfies.
So I say, now then, you who have the Holy Spirit, here is your chance, explain it to me so that I too may learn. I don't know, he says. I know that you don't know, I say, but the Holy Spirit knows. Since you have the Holy Spirit, ask Him, so that He may tell you, so that we may both learn.
My brothers, what I am about to tell you, do not take it as an exaggeration. From the time I was a small child I have had a weakness for Holy Scripture. As father Augustine would put it, from the time I was a little child I have been swimming in the Scriptures. It is my hobby, if you want to call it that. There I find comfort and relief. I search and I wrestle with the passages of Holy Scripture. What I am about to say, I repeat, do not take as an exaggeration. Even the smallest book of Holy Scripture,
such as the book of Obadiah from the Old Testament and the Second Catholic Epistle of John from the New Testament, I have not managed to understand fully and completely. There remain points that are difficult, that cannot be explained. There are points about which I have no certainty that their meaning is truly such. That is why I told you, all that we know is a drop before an ocean, compared to all that we do not know. That is why I told you, Socrates was right when he said, one thing I know, that I know nothing.
For deep down, in the final analysis, we know nothing. Deep down, and in the final analysis, the One who knows all things is the Holy Spirit, which searches all things, even the depths of God. O man, why do you take pride? You take pride because you have managed to attain some important position within society, within the apparatus of the state. Many take pride because they have managed to seize some higher, some key position within an organization.
I ask you, my friend: how did you come by that position? Were there perhaps others more capable than you, whom you pushed aside, whom you shoved out of the way, using dishonest political and other worldly means? That is usually what happens. If that is how it happened, my friend, then no, you should not take pride because you obtained a position. Rather, you should be ashamed. You take pride because you obtained a position.
And tell me please, do you work conscientiously in the position you obtained? What goes on in this country, my brothers? You may have to dial five or ten times. You pick up the receiver and dial the number to get a line and make a call. You dial the right number and a different one comes up. You try a second time, and again a second wrong number comes up. You try a third time and finally reach the number you want. You speak for a little while, and the call is cut off. What does this mean? Within the organization called OTE, only one person in a hundred is doing his job.
The other ninety-nine are unmoved. They neglect the equipment, and the Greek people pay the price. A single phone call can end up costing three times over, many times over. You hold a position, but you do not work conscientiously. You should not take pride, you should be ashamed, because, as the Gospel says, you lay the very place to waste. You take pride because you hold a position. However important you may consider that position to be, it is no great thing, because this position lasts only a short while, for a few years or a few decades, and afterward its importance,
the importance of the position, comes to nothing. The final position of man here on earth is in the cemetery. The final position, I said, here on earth. There is life beyond the grave. O man, you who take pride because here you have managed to secure a good position for a few years or a few decades, I ask you: in the boundless eternity, what position have you secured? What place have you secured in Paradise?
Those who hold office take pride because they have managed to rise, to be elevated, as they say, to seize high and coveted offices. You take pride, O man, because you hold the office of university professor. You take pride, O man, because you hold the office of academician. And you, the next one, take pride because you are a Minister, or a Prime Minister, or a President of the Republic, or a General and a Commander-in-Chief and a war leader,
and a King and an Emperor. And you too take pride, my dear little father, because you are a hierarch, a bishop, an Archbishop, a Patriarch. And you too take pride, O Pope, because you set yourself above all. You are asked: how did you come by your office? By worth, or by trampling on others? And if you seized the office by trampling on others, then you have an office, but you have no worth, and you ought to be ashamed.
My brothers, we do not live on Mars, we are not extraterrestrial beings, we live on earth. The greater part of those who hold office have the office, but they have no worth, and that is why humanity suffers.
But even if you came by your office worthily, my friend, you should not take pride; rather you should be humble, because the office is of only temporary importance, and that importance too comes to nothing in the graves, that importance too is reduced to nothing in the graves. Death, death, that is what strips every officeholder of his rank. He tears them down, if I may put it in plain language; he tears down university professors and academics,
ministers and prime ministers, presidents of republics, generals and commanders-in-chief, kings and bishops and archbishops and patriarchs and popes. In the cemeteries there are no dignitaries. There are bare bones, naked bones. In the cemeteries there is no grandeur and no splendor. There is dust, filth, and stench. The great ones, my brothers, are not the people I mentioned. The great ones are the spiritual people.
An illiterate man, an obscure villager, whose mind is clear and who reflects on human affairs and says: everything is vanity; love and goodness and a good conscience, these are what have worth. This man is a person of true rank, because he is a spiritual man and he has worth, and his virtue will accompany him beyond the grave. All human things are vanity, all that does not endure after death.
Everything human is vanity, all that does not exist after death. Virtue exists after death. Virtue follows a man after death, to raise him up. above the stars of heaven. Brothers, I have spoken about knowledge, about positions, about offices. Those who are faithful spirits, clear and lucid spirits; those who, however simple they may be, reflect on the vanity of human things and
are oriented toward the boundless eternity. These, I repeat, are the great people, and they will lay hold of eternity. O man, do not take pride in anything in this world. Humble yourself, and then you will gain knowledge. The knowledge you have here is rather ignorance. If you humble yourself, you will enter another world and gain much knowledge.
The perfect knowledge will come; you will know incomparably more things, to an incomparably greater degree than you know now. Allow me to express myself in this way. O man, humble yourself now, do not take pride in your knowledge, and in the boundless eternity you will acquire a relative omniscience. If I may put it this way, a relative omniscience. We human beings here have two eyes.
The angels in Heaven, according to the vision of John in the Apocalypse, are full of eyes, full of eyes. What does this mean? We human beings have two eyes here below on earth; the angels in Heaven are full of eyes, in front, behind, full of eyes. This means that the angels know incomparably more than we do. And we, when we humble ourselves in this world, will become like the angels and will have the knowledge of the angels and the archangels.
A relative omniscience, if this expression is permitted, this oxymoron. O man, do not take pride because you managed to take hold of a position in this world. Humble yourself, and take hold of a position that will not be only for a few years and a few decades. It will be infinite; it will be a position in the boundless eternity;
it will be a position within the palace of God. In My Father's house there are many dwelling places; and if it were not so, I would have told you; I go to prepare a place for you. How beautiful are the words of our Lord. They are words from His last discourse, His Testament. In My Father's house, Christ said, in the palace of My Father, there are many rooms, many places, for all the faithful. If there were not, I would have told you.
He called us His friends. He told us His secrets. He hid nothing from us of what is for our benefit. I go, I go now, to Golgotha, to the Tomb, to Hades, to Heaven, to prepare a place for you, and I will come again and receive you, to have you with Me, a position not within the state apparatus, those positions are not great; a position in the palace of God, near the Father, near Christ, near the Holy Spirit. This is the high one, this is the precious position,
an eternal and enviable position. O man, you take pride in your office; the offices here on earth are nothing. Death, we said, casts down from every office; it tears down all the dignitaries. Humble yourself, O man. Humble yourself to the ground, and you will rise up to heaven. What did I say? Above the heaven, to the heaven of heaven. You will rise to the realm of the immaterial spirits,
and you will receive a kingdom. You will become a king. You will take hold of the most splendid office, and a priest, a lord. So says the Apocalypse. You will receive the two most enviable, the greatest offices, lord and king, and you will rule over cities, and you will reign unto the boundless ages, and of your kingdom there shall be no end. Amen.
